Preface
When Charles and Della’s granddaughter Grace Earlene Hoagland Olds passed away in 1997 she left me witha number of family photographs and memoranda. I unfortunately didn’t personally know either Granddad orGrandma Fisher very well since Earlene and I moved away from Denver relatively soon after our marriage in1949.
But the photographs in my files began to concern me and I felt that while I really didn’t know much aboutCharles and Della, I felt that a small written history might allow me to share these photographs among theFisher and Waterhouse families as well as others who might be interested. And I felt that along the way, Imight pick up a few interesting tid bits about their ancestors from the internet.
What a surprise I was in for. The internet information started and kept coming. The Internet resources in-cluded:
Detailed Census reports on families and neighbors of families.The great LDS Family Tree program.Detailed family trees on Ancestry.com especially Cathy Marvel’s and Mike and Barb’s trees.Google maps to help visualize the details of the Western Migration of the Fishers and Waterhouses.Historical documents from the Denver Public Library on line.Various on line city directories.And various web sites hosted by family members with historical family details.
There are so many people to thank. But I would be remiss in not acknowledging the great history GertrudeFisher Harding posted for Sebastian Fischer and the story of the Palatine German immigration to New York.
And I appreciate having my eyes open to the great contribution to early Denver history by the many Waterhouses.I was happy to be able to meet and converse with Betty Waterhouse and for the great help and support she gaveme.
What a great appreciation I now have for Earlene’s two special grandparents, Charles Fisher and DellaWaterhouse. It was fascinating reliving the details of the actual history of America as seen through the eyes oftheir ancestors.
And of course, what this history documents, is the Great Western Migration from the East Coast to the veryinland city of Denver. In an age of covered wagon travel, one has to be amazed at how willing the Fishers andWaterhouses were in packing up and relocating significant distances away.
And of course they had problems, just as we all have had in our own lives. But they solved them and keptgoing forward as well as westward.
So this small history is just a way of thanking these great people for the rich heritage they have given us.
