The Student Voice The Student Voice The Joys of Winter by Lisa Laraux Kuskokwim Campus UAF, Student Newsletter Volume 3 Issue 2 December 8, 2011 I love Bush Alaskan win- ters! I love the beautiful snow, the cold temperatures that freeze the ice, the occasional blizzard, and the adventures by snow machine or truck. Since I was young, I have enjoyed sledding, plopping down in the soft snow, family snow machine rides that would sometimes lead us to our cabin on the Kisaralik River, and traveling on the river in a truck. To me it never mat- tered where we were going as long as we were going. I was never bored in the winter. I never got tired of making snowmen, snow angels, and awe- some snow caves. Having siblings and lots of cousins made these moments so much more enjoy- able. I loved winter a lot more when I was younger than I do now, but that is starting to change now that my son is getting older. I get to teach him everything I know about winter activities and how to prepare before going outside or on an adventure, just as my parents taught me. I love watching him enjoy these Bush Alaskan winters just as much as I did when I was his age. My family and I like to do lots of different work in Kal- skag. Usually it is daily chores, such as chopping wood and gathering up alder trees for the smoke house; we also gather other kinds of wood for the wood stoves that our family uses. We never have the kind of troubles that we have in Bethel, like boredom and lack of things to do. It is fun there and never really gets tiring. Practically the only modes of transportation are four wheelers or snow ma- chines; almost nobody has a truck or car, except for some people living in Upper Kal- skag. This past summer my older cousin took me with him when he went drifting for king salmon and other fish, such as dog salmon, sil- vers, and reds. Some days I went berry picking with my grandma and some other rela- tives, up the hill that’s behind Upper and sometimes on the trail behind it. This year there weren’t many salmon berries for us to pick. Maybe other people picked them before we got there. It was okay, though, because there were plenty of other kinds of berries where we like to go. My family likes to store most of their berries and other things in their freezers. I like it in Kalskag because it is peaceful and I have fam- ily there who can really cheer me up. I love Bush Alaskan win-ters! I love the beautiful snow, the cold temperatures that freeze the ice, the occasional blizzard, and the adventures by snow machine or truck. Since I was young, I have enjoyed sledding, plopping down in the soft snow, family

snow machine rides that would sometimes lead us to our cabin on the Kisaralik River, and traveling on the river in a truck. To me it never mat-tered where we were going as long as we were going. I was never bored in the winter. I never got tired of making

snowmen, snow angels, and awe-some snow caves. Having siblings and lots of cousins made these moments so much more enjoy-able. I loved winter a lot more when I was younger than I do now, but that is starting to change now that my son is

getting older. I get to teach him everything I know about winter activities and how to prepare before going outside or on an adventure, just as my parents taught me. I love watching him enjoy these Bush Alaskan winters just as much as I did when I was his age.

My family and I like to do lots of different work in Kal-skag. Practically the only modes of transportation are

How much time do you spend on Face-book? Have you ever wondered if you are ad-dicted to

Facebook because you start to constantly go online to check other people’s statuses and comments? Do you think of checking Facebook before breakfast?

Sadly, I have to admit I have. One day I realized I’ve been wasting a bunch of precious time being on Face-book when I should have been working on my writing homework or my speech paper. I sit at my desk most days, stuck

on Face-book, up-

loading new pictures and updating my status. I took a Facebook Addiction quiz recently on theoatmeal.com and got my result; I am 60% addicted to Facebook. I think that’s just about right because I feel the need to go online every few hours or so to update my status, look at other peo-ple’s status and comments, and upload a few pictures. Another reason I go to Face-book is to play Tetris Battle, a game that all my friends play every day, every night. Recently I realized I haven’t really been doing homework and my homework was starting to pile up at my desk. I re-member thinking oh my gosh, I didn’t realize I had so much homework to do until now.

If any of you are doing any of these things then you may be addicted to Facebook too. There are ways to get over this addiction. According to the website

thedailymind.com, first you have to admit that you are addicted to Facebook. Then limit your time on the site. Set a certain time to be on it and a certain time to get off of it. Turn off your email notifica-tions. Fight your temptation by spending time with friends and family, reading a book, or going out to shoot some hoops. Stay off the computer as much as you can.

Now that you know about Face-book addiction, I hope you control your time spent on Facebook. I encourage eve-ryone who spends a lot of time on the site to change your ways and begin living a healthy lifestyle. Turn off the computer and get some work done. Take a walk or catch up with friends. Stay active and replace Facebook with activities you used to do .

i wouldn’t be here not even close to this day, if it weren’t for my grandparents every step of the way. i grew up not having a dad, my grandparents were all i had, i used to tumble, break, and fall, but they would stick with me through it all. i used to close my eyes wondering how i’d make it out, when i would open them there were my grandparents without a doubt. so thank you forever i want to say, i appreciate you every minute of every day.
