Karen Young- More than 350 of Karen’s friends and

family attended a gig at the Grampian Club in Corby

on Friday 17th

February, in support of the Our Space

Appeal. Karen, 23, who is receiving treatment in our

hospitals, said that she was overwhelmed by the

support she received.

Karen, who is receiving treatment for leukaemia,

said: “It can be very difficult when you’re in hospital

for weeks at a time. A unit for young people would

make a difficult situation much better for patients.”

She started fundraising for the appeal with her friend Siobhan Buzzard, who sadly died last year of the

same condition. They met while having treatment.

Karen said “I felt really stressed out before the dance but I shouldn’t have worried. Hundreds turned

up and everyone had a great time. There was tremendous support for the appeal and for me. I saw a

lot of people I hadn’t seen since school and they were all so kind. We hit the £2,000 mark but the final

total could be more. It’s totally overwhelming. I’m exhausted but it was all worth it.”

Corruption who were one of the bands that played on the night also played in

a pub on Saturday night and donated their fee to the appeal.

Paul Young, Karen’s brother and his friend Martin

Curran had their heads shaved, chests waxed and

legs shaved to raise money in support of Karen.

Paul, who had been growing his hair for 6 years,

said: “It is now very cold and feels very strange, but

it is all for a good case. It was not that painful. The

worst part was losing my long hair.”

Mark Gibbard, manager of the Thurmaston Magpies Under-13s, held a Charity

Football match at the Leicester & Rutland County FA head quarters- Homes Park

Whetstone on Saturday 18th

Feb. The day raised an incredible £2,062.09- amazing

considering the wet weather! Dr Fox made an appearance and came back very

muddy! Mark decided to fundraise for the Our Space Appeal in support of patient

Prof Dyer and Ali's Tattoo- Professor of Haematology, Martin Dyer has decided

to join cancer patient Ali Johnson, 20, to have an image of a Toucan, designed by

Ali, tattooed on his body.

Ali asked Prof Dyer if it was safe to have a tattoo once she had finished her treatment and

after divulging it to be a toucan, he found himself offering to have the same on his body.

One of his favourite books is Two Can Toucan by David McKee and that together with a

special patient, Ali, persuaded him to join her in this one off venture to raise as much

money as possible for the Our Space Appeal.

Prof Dyer says “The more money we raise the more embarrassing the position of the tattoo!!!” They

are planning to have their tattoos done in the middle of July at Swannys Tattooz in
