The Arts Center In Orange is a nonprofit community arts center with a mission to increase the quality of life in our community by promoting an appreciation for fine contemporary arts in diverse styles and ideologies. This is done by providing: a forum to promote artistic excellence; scholarship and education; a venue for artists and artisans to work, teach, exhibit and sell work; and a place for the community to learn skills, and to participate in and enjoy the arts.

PRESIDENT’S CORNERBecause so many of you have asked what you could do for the arts and your community, our little town has an incredible asset in our arts center. Your time and ideas, as well as your financial support, are what make us great.

I want to recognize a number of people who continue to make a difference. With a meager budget and a tiny paid staff, there is no

way The Arts Center In Orange could have accomplished all that it has without the help of our volunteers.

So here is a special thank you to the wonderful women who regularly staff the front desk at our center. They put in many hours to make sure everything works, and our doors stay open. They are the best! These ladies include Barbara Collins, Ginny Broadbeck, Judy Quaely, Judy Peterson, and Glennis Mairs.

The irregulars are those who happen by when needed or called upon. They include: Harold Green, who helps with repairs and trash pickup; Cynthia Whitman, who has made numerous trips to the dump with her trailer; Eric Paulson, who fixed the peeling veneer in our display window; Tina Boy, who created our donation cube after the original was stolen; and Jess Cifizzari, who volunteered her husband to build shelves for the new clay studio.

Q: How can I support The Arts Center In Orange?

A: With donations, good ideas, and volunteer hours.

Donating is simple! Donate on-line at: www.artscenterinorange.com.

Volunteering is fun!Just give us a call at (540) 672–7311 or email:[email protected]

We would love to hear from you!

Also, there are the folks who appear out of nowhere, do a job, and disappear. One example is a fellow from out of town who noticed us struggling to move a refrigerator. While his wife shopped, he moved the refrigerator.

Our contractors have been invaluable over the years. While the Morin family entrusted us with their historic Main Street building, a gift for which we will be forever grateful, there is always a lot of work to do to maintain our home. Enter Turner Construction, W. A. Sherman, and Wayner Construction. Rob Turner, while taking a clay class, heard us fretting about a roof problem, and just showed up and fixed our roof. Coping with the building’s historic wiring, plumbing, and heating would have been impossible without Fred Sherman. When things got confusing, who did we call? W. A. Sherman! We miss Fred, and are truly grateful to Rick Sherman for continuing to carry the torch, and upgrading all systems. Joe Wayner noticed the second floor windows on the front of the building needed replacing, so he and his crew donated the windows and labor. When funds became available, we chose to work with the people who have already helped us, and now our building is a showplace on Main Street.

All of the individuals who volunteer at our Arts Center bring their own unique talents to the job.

Please think about what you have to offer. A few hours, a few dollars, a good idea . . . The Arts Center In Orange was founded on $32, a good idea, and people like you.

I hope to see you here soon.

ED HARVEYPRESIDENT

P.S. This letter should also include heroic, founding volunteers like Ann Mallory, Alyson Sparks and Ben and Lucy AnnGrimm, and the many, many volunteer artists and musicians who got our Community Outreach started. But space will not allow.

The Art of Orange County’s School ChildrenOpening 5-7pm on Thursday, May 10, and continuing throughout the month, The Arts Center In Orange celebrates the art of our county’s school children. By far the most popular of our exhibits, with fabulous art hung from floor to ceiling, and standing-room-only crowds for the opening reception, Young Visions is a REALLY BIG SHOW and one you won’t want to miss.

Art teachers from each of Orange County’s public schools and Grymes Memorial School have selected the work to be exhibited. The Arts Center’s Community Outreach instructors will also hang the adorable self-portraits created by the very young artists at Orange County Head Start & Early Head Start.

Also in May, Woodberry Forest School will present its Annual Area High Schools Student Art Show opening the evening of May 10 in the Baker Gallery of the Walker Fine Arts Center. The exhibit includes work by students from William Monroe High School, Culpeper County High School, Eastern View High School, Highland School, Orange County High School, and Woodberry Forest School.

All of these exhibits and opening receptions are free and the public is invited! Ribbons will be awarded based on people’s choice, so be sure to visit and cast your vote!

THE PAINTINgS Of ROSE MARY WAllSIf you’ve visited the Orange Senior Center, you may have met Rose Mary Walls. That’s where Arts Center volunteer Judy Peterson met her. Rose Mary shared a tiny album containing photos of her paintings, as well as stories to accompany the paintings, and Judy was charmed.

If you’ve read The Glass Castle or Half Broke Horses by New York Times best-selling author Jeanette Walls, or seen the 2017 film The Glass Castle starring Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts, you will also be familiar with Rose Mary Walls, and you may have glimpsed some of her paintings.

Exhibit dates: June 6-July 28 , 2018Opening reception: 5–7pm on Wednesday, June 6

Born in 1934, Rose Mary Smith grew up on her father’s 100,000 acre cattle ranch outside Ash Fork, in Arizona’s plateau country. Attending boarding school in Prescott, she dreamed of becoming an artist. At her mother’s insistence, she pursued a teaching degree instead, but never gave up her dream. At 21, she met and married charismatic dreamer Rex Walls, They, and their four children, lived a nomadic desert life until finances forced them to back to Rex’s family home in Welch, West Virginia. Rex and Rose Mary eventually followed daughter Jeanette to New York City, squatting in abandoned properties until Rex died in 1994. Rose Mary now lives in a lovely white shingled cottage on daughter Jeanette’s Orange County farm, attends the Orange Senior Center on Mondays, and still paints!

Rose Mary Walls’ paintings witness time and place, and tell a story.

Outreach News Sharing the Arts Through Community Partnership!

Arts Center Outreach instructor, Dr. Dena Jennings is spending time with kids at the Boys & Girls Club of Orange--teaching the many cultures and rhythms of Africa, and building percussion instruments from recycled materials-- in preparation for Boys & Girls Club of Orange performance at this year’s Orange County Juneteenth celebration. Mark your calendars to attend, June 16 at James Madison’s Montpelier. The event is FREE, and the kids will be brilliant!

What a wonderful time. The youth were able to practice principles of instrument building. Their problem solving and assessment of their own work was a joy to behold. At the end of the session, they decided to march their drums to the art room while playing a rhythm they made up. I look forward to working with them again.- Dr. Dena Jennings

We asked OC kids for Juneteenth:

Celebrate freedom poster art, & WE GOT IT!

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending

of slavery in the United States. It was a joy to see young artists’ expressions of freedom—chains breaking, gates

opening, doves and butterflies taking flight and drums beating in celebration—

the winning work by autumn morris (below) was chosen based on the original use of artistic media, technique, and the design’s ability to be reproduced in promotional materials and t-shirt design.
