THE ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL IN ACTION . . .

Evangelization - Ministry to Families,

Youth and Young Adults Every person belongs to a family. Families are the foundation of the Catholic parish. In the midst of the family and the parish community, people encounter Christ and learn to be his disciples. Family and Parish are the primary environments in which evangelization takes place. Together in Mission is a tool to support these evangelization efforts. Your gift promotes individuals and family life. Youth events and service op-portunities, young adult gatherings, Marriage prep, Bap-tismal prep, Ministry to separated and divorced persons are just a few of the services offered.

Theme: "Following Jesus in these Troubling Times” Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus

Council 7000 The event is free and open to the public.

For questions or to register, contact John Sikorski at 609-883-2509 or by e-mail at [email protected]

Remembrance in Your Will A remembrance for your parish in your will is a wonderful way to provide for the future

well-being of your parish community. Thank you for considering this very special way

of sharing with your parish family.

Parish Mission Statement

The Church of Saint Ann in Lawrenceville is a

Roman Catholic family of faith, built on the inspiration of

past generations, to serve the community

by loving God and our neighbor.

We strengthen faith, celebrate the sacraments,

provide for the spiritual and corporal works of mercy,

educate across the lifespan, heal the spiritually broken,

and respect the dignity of human life.

We live the Gospel and seek Christ in all people.

GOSPEL M a r c h 1 0 , 2 0 1 9 - L k 4 : 1 - 1 3

First Sunday of Lent Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry. The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." Jesus answered him, "It is written, One does not live on bread alone." Then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant. The devil said to him, "I shall give to you all this power and glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish. All this will be yours, if you worship me." Jesus said to him in reply, "It is written: You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve." Then he led him to Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you, and: With their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone." Jesus said to him in reply, "It also says, You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test." When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.

REFLECTION Always on the First Sunday of Lent we hear Jesus being tempted by the devil during the forty days he spent in the desert. We too are beginning a forty-day period which we are challenged to repent and reorient ourselves toward God. We face temptations every day that distract us from following the Lord or lead us away from God. May our gathering together to celebrate the Eucharist inspire us and nourish us in the weeks ahead.

As is our Lenten tradition, the Stations of the Cross will be cele-brated each Friday at 3:00 PM and 7:30 PM. If you would like to volunteer to lead the Stations on a particular Friday, please contact Sister Pat ([email protected]) who is creating the schedule for all the Fridays in Lent.

We Encourage You To Wrap Your Gift

Faith Direct We are thankful for all the generous gifts that you provide to our parish, but realize that you cannot be with us every Sunday of the year. Please consider using our secure electronic giving program, Faith Direct. Faith Direct will automatically process any offertory or second collections donations of your choosing. Visit www.faithdirect.net and use our church code: NJ709, or by mailing a paper enrollment form available at the welcome desk in the parish office. Thank you for your continued support of our parish family!

Religious Education/ Generations of Faith First Eucharist registration forms were due

Monday, February 25th. If you have not returned the form, please do so as soon as possible.

The forms are available on the Church’s website under Children’s Education.

If you returned your child’s form by the deadline and selected one of the designated Masses,

please consider your selection confirmed.

If your child’s Confirmation registration form was received by February 11, 2019, please consider your selected service time confirmed. There are still a hand full of families who have not

returned the registration form. Please do so as soon as possible.

GOF families should have received invitations to register for a March session. This month’s topic is the Sacraments. The children will be exploring the Sacraments of Initiation

(Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist), the Sacraments of Healing (Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick) and

the Sacraments of Service (Holy Orders and Matrimony). The adults will concentrate their discussions around

the Sacrament of Matrimony. We all learned about the outward signs

instituted by Christ that give grace. However, it benefits us to revisit our understanding of the

Sacraments and garnish a deeper appreciation and respect for what the Sacraments bring to our lives as Catholics.

We remind you to check the church website to find out about cancelations of Religious Education classes or

Generations of Faith sessions due to inclement weather. If it is possible, we will also send out an email to the address we have on file for your family.

MARCH 10, 2019 - FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

ANNOUNCEMENTS, continued

GGreen Team Suggested Resource for Lent In his timely letter on the environment, On the Care of Our Common Home (Laudato Si), Pope Francis reminds us that creation is a gift from God and caring for that gift is an essential part of being a disciple of Jesus. To help Catholics reflect on the gift of creation and how they can put their faith into action, the Catholic Climate Covenant (a program from the US Bishops) has created a Lenten Calendar which focuses on the environment and suggests things we can do in our commitment to care for God's earth and for the poor. Many of us give up something for Lent. We invite you to participate in a "carbon fast" as a way to become more mindful of how our daily habits impact "our common home" and to reduce our carbon footprint. Below are a few suggestions from this calendar. Visit the USCCB website to find the complete calendar at usccb.org.

SUNDAY: Embrace silence today. Turn off everything unnecessary. Reflect on God's glory in creation. "The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims God's handiwork." (Psalm 19:1)

MONDAY: Purchase more thoughtfully. Question your need before buying. Use alternative gift giving that benefits creation and the poor. Use the Catholic Relief Services gift catalog.

TUESDAY: Minimize disposables at home. Use cloth napkins. Wipe up with a dishcloth instead of paper towels. Replace loofahs with washcloths.

WEDNESDAY: Use your thermostat well. Keep your home cooler in winter and warmer in summer. Close vents in unused rooms. Consider a programmable thermostat.

THURSDAY: When driving obey the speed limit. Every 10 mph increase above 60 reduces fuel economy by 4 mpg.

FRIDAY: "This rather is the fasting that I wish" -- Reflect on Isaiah 58:1-9 and how eating less meat may be a way to fast as the Lord desires.

SATURDAY: Minimize disposables at work. Use a mug for coffee and water. Carry lunch in reusable food containers. Use reusable cutlery instead of plastic.
