APRIL 21 , 2019 - EASTER SUNDAY

Easter Flowers Flowers are a sign of life, they are also a sign of celebration. Easter is our greatest Celebration and so we have filled our church with flowers. Treat them with love and care, just as we should treat one another. Let the flowers remind you of the life and joy we are called to bring to those we meet and greet during this Easter season.

Easter Memorial The flowers and decorations placed throughout our church at Easter are gifts of friends and parishioners in memory of friends and relatives who, through their death, now share new life with Christ. These faithful departed remain with us in many ways and our Easter atmosphere should be a reminder of their abiding presence. We are grateful to all who contributed to our Easter flowers and decorations.

Paschal Candle This candle is the primary symbol of the Easter season. It was the first candle lighted from our new fire at the Easter Vigil and was carried into the dark church to bring the light of Christ to a waiting community. It is a concrete reminder to all that Christ, the light of the world, has overcome the darkness of sin and death. The Paschal Candle remains in a place of prominence and is lighted throughout the Easter at all gatherings to worship throughout the season. After Pentecost, the Paschal Candle is lighted each time we celebrate a Baptism here at The Church of Saint Ann. When we are baptized, we become a member of the Church and a child of light. We also light the Paschal Candle each time we celebrate a person‘s passing to new life with a Mass of Christian Burial. Easter season might be a good time to decorate a large candle in your home and light it whenever the family gets together to share a meal. It is a good way to connect our homes to our Church. If you have used the rice bowl during the Lenten season, the Easter candle might be a good replacement for that until Pentecost.

Easter Water Our holy water fonts are flowing with new Easter water. We used this water to renew our own Baptismal promises at Easter Masses. Bring a small container and take some Holy Water to fill your fonts at home.

Sprinkling Rite Speaking of Easter Water – we will use the sprinkling rite at the beginning of our masses during the Easter Season. We do this as a reminder of Baptism. It calls us back to our central identity as followers of Christ, and the beginning of our new life with the risen Christ.

Alleluia! Alleluia! We have not heard ALLELUIA since Ash Wednesday! There is no exact translation for the word. It is a word to express deep joy. We will sing ALLELUIA! before and after our gospel reading during the Easter Season.

Easter Eggs Easter eggs have been acknowledged as a symbol of continuing life and fertility, since pre-Christian spring celebrations. Given as springtime gifts by the ancient Greeks, Persians and Chinese at their spring festivals, the Easter egg appears in Pagan mythology as well, where the Heaven and Earth were thought to have been formed from two halves of an egg.

GOSPEL Easter Sunday

A p r i l 2 1 , 2 0 1 9 J o h n 2 0 : 1 - 9

On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, ―They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don‘t know where they put him.‖ So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet under-stand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

REFLECTION Today we are filled with joy, for we celebrate the resurrec-tion of Our Lord. He died on the cross, but now he has been raised from death to new life. Today we are filled with hope, for the sacrifice he made on the cross has opened the way to eternal life. His sacrifice is our salvation. Today we are filled with praise, for Jesus Christ has won victory over the grave. He has redeemed humanity.

Rosary Altar Society Baby Shower Thank You!

Thank you so much to the parishioners at Saint Michael's and Saint Ann's for their generous contributions to the Rosary Altar Society Baby Shower. So many wonderful gifts and the organizations were so grateful and heartfelt in expressing their thanks. Mt. Carmel Guilt, Anchor House, Haitian Ministry, and Better Community Housing received items this year.

Thanks also to the Rosarians who brought the gifts from Saint Michael's to our sorting event and to the Rosarians who helped sort the gifts for distribution. Many hands make light work! You are all in our prayers.

Catholic Home Missions Collection

Next week, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Collection. Right now, over 40% of dioceses in the United States are considered mission territory because they are unable to fund essential pastoral work in their communities. Your support of this appeal eases the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this appeal. Find more information at www.usccb.org/home-missions. As is our custom, we will take up only one collection. Envelopes are available at the doors of the church.

IN ACTION . . . Catholic Education

Administration Catholic schools in Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean counties welcome over 16,000 Catholic and non-Catholic students from many different cultural backgrounds. Parents, as the primary educators of their children, work in partnership with teachers to develop their children's potential in becoming life-long learners. Donations to the ACA help to ensure that curriculum and performance standards and development of educators continue at high levels within our 31 Catholic elementary schools and 7 high schools Last year your gift helped with reaching out to more than 78,000 alumni who have been given the opportunity to give back so that other students can succeed in our schools.

The Newman Connection Did you know that there is a Catholic presence on

over 2,000 different college campuses?

The Newman Connection’s High School Outreach Program

acts as a bridge between graduating high students and campus

ministry. We hope Catholic Campus Ministry (no matter what

college or university you are attending) can become a place of

support and comfort, a ―home away from home.‖

To locate your campus ministry, go to newmanconnection.com

or call 1-866-815-2034.

I was in prison and you visited Me!

The Diocese of Trenton Jail and Prison Ministry is in great need of volunteers to visit our incarcerated brothers and sisters, to remind them of God’s great

love and mercy for them. We serve multiple State and County Correctional Centers as well as the Federal Prison at Ft. Dix. Our volunteers conduct Communion Services, Bible Studies and Prayer Services, as well as offering the gift of Listening and Pastoral Presence.

If you are interested in sharing faith, hope and love with this often forgotten population, we will be conducting information sessions throughout the Diocese. Please call the Ministry Coordinator, Peter Haas at 609-403-7198 or email him at [email protected]. Please leave your name, phone number, email and parish. We will contact you with the date, time and location of the information sessions. Thank you.

GRANPARENTS GARDEN REVITALIZATION 2019

PLEASE PLACE YOUR ORDER BY MAY 1, 2019

You and those you love can be a part of our parish Grandparents‘ Garden, the Garden of Saint Ann, our patron, and her spouse Saint Joachim—parents of Mary, grandparents of Jesus. The garden is a place where people young and old visit, rest, and pray for themselves, their parents, grandparents, children, or grandchildren. It is a place to remember some important lessons passed on to us by those who have gone before us. The statues that grace the garden are original works of art created by Fr. Leonard Carrieri, M.SS.CC.

We are in the process of revitalizing the Grandparents‘ Garden by beautifying the plant beds, reconditioning and re-setting the benches, putting a new patina on the statues, and expanding the hardscape. We are offering the opportunity to personalize/memorialize a brick paver in the garden—for yourself, your family, or a loved one. Up to three lines, each containing a maximum of 15 characters (including spaces between words) may be inscribed on a paver. To reserve a paver, COMPLETE AN ORDER FORM (found at the FDC Welcome Desk) and send with a $100 check to: Grandparents‘ Garden, Church of Saint Ann, 1253 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648. Please note that bricks ordered now will be installed by Mother‘s Day of 2019 when the project is complete. Checks are made out to ‗The Church of Saint Ann.‖
