William Jefferson Sword was born on August 13, 1827, in Pike County, Kentucky. He was the only son ofFrancis (of Sword’s Creek, Russell County, Virginia) and Susan (Clark) Sword. William and his seven sisterswere all born at Tollard’s Creek, and reared on a farm located on John’s Creek, Pike County, Kentucky. Williammarried a widow, Pricy Mims (Williamson) Herndon, on October 1, 1854. They were married by Elder GeorgeStump, at the house of Joseph Bevins, on John’s Creek. Pricy had a daughter, Mary Herndon, who was about two-years-old when she and William married. Family lore has it, that William was engaged to another woman, butafter meeting the widow and her little Mary, he fell in love with the child and decided that she needed a father. Hewas devoted to her, and was heartbroken when she died before him. The following children of William and Pricy,were all born in Pike County, Kentucky. Robert Elcaney, born on March 25, 1858; Susan (Sue) born on October19, 1861; William Jefferson, Jr., born on April 25, 1863. Pricie Idabella (Belle) born on November 16, 1866; andCordelia (Cordie) born on August 11, 1870. This family also lived in Floyd County and Lawrence CountyKentucky, before moving to Arkansas. When William enlisted in 1862, Pricy had three young children and wassix months pregnant. The war years were a rough time for her. To counter-act the stress she started smoking acorn-cob pipe—a habit she continued throughout her life. Later, in Arkansas, it was thought that she grew herown tobacco. William told his son, Robert, that when he turned twenty-one (1879) he could move wherever hewanted. He chose Arkansas, which sounded good to William also. So, the entire Sword family--as well as, Mary(Herndon) Chapman, her husband John and their four children, and her brother-in-law, Rush--all left Pike Countytogether. They tied up their belongings in sheets, and left Kentucky by the Ohio River. They traveled by ferryboats, barges, and steam boats, until they reached the White River in Baxter County, Arkansas. Like his fatherbefore him, and his son after him, William was a farmer. But no one could recall him ever working! It was said(jokingly) that he didn’t believe in working, so it was a good thing that he had plenty of money. However, he

loved horses, and by 1892, he had acquired 160 acres in Big Flat, Baxter County, Arkansas, on which to raisethem. He was an excellent horseman, but he also had a buggy (with its own team) that he would take his familyout in. William was a kind, good natured man who was especially fond of his daughters and granddaughters. Hetaught all his grandchildren how to ride, and after a day out, the granddaughters would have the task of removinghis boots. He wore Civil War issue, knee-high boots, so the girls would take turns tugging, until they were off.His favorite pastime was whittling. He would use the wooden crates that groceries were boxed in and whittle softpine toys for the children. They thought of him as a true gentleman” and never had a cross thought about him.After his wife died in 1909, William divided his time between his home and the home of his son, Robert. Near theend of his life, he lived full-time with, and under the care of his son and daughter-in-law, Mary Jane “Janie”(Landrith) Sword. When he requested it, Robert took him home and he died there, in Big Flat, attended by hisson, on May 4, 1921. William J. Sword of Big Flat, 93 years old, and one of the oldest settlers in that section ofBaxter County, died last week. One of his principle diversions in old age was whittling with his keen old barlow.He didn’t whittle aimlessly, but fashioned what-nots. He made wooden dolls for the children, flutter mills, etc. Hisbody was interred in the local cemetery.” Baxter County Bulletin, June 3, 1921. (Note: He is buried in the BurntSchool House Cemetery, Lone Rock, Baxter County, Arkansas. His headstone reads: W. J. Sword, Co. D, 39 KYINF. Also, it has been passed down in the family that William donated the land for the Burnt School HouseCemetery, but I have no record of this.) According to William’s Military Service records, he enlisted on October22, 1862, as a private in Co. D, 39th Regiment of Kentucky Infantry, Volunteers. He was honorably dischargedon September 15, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky. In 1890, he filed a Declaration for Invalid Pension, and wasawarded $12 dollars a month, commencing on September 28, 1891. At the time of his death, in 1921, he wasreceiving $72 dollars a month.

Notes for TABITHA ANNA SWORD:BITHA ANN OSBORN - It is with a sad feeling of love and a broken heart that I now try to write a short sketchof my dear mother, to-wit, Bitha Ann Osborn. She was born August 31, 1861 and deceased this life on November27, 1939, at the age of 78 years, two months and 26 days. She was the daughter of William and Crissy Sword.She was married to Will Osborn, the son of George and Clarinda Osborn and to this union were born fifteenchildren, seven of whom, together with her husband, preceded her in death. She leaves eight children, three girlsand five boys, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, three brothers and many friends to mourn herloss. Mother joined the Old Regular Baptist Church in Menifee County in 1910 and was a faithful member untildeath. She was a good kind mother and wife. She gave us all good counsel. She was kind to everyone who knewher. Everybody loved her. I know there was no rest for her until God called her home where she will be withfather and other loved ones forever. Two of mother's children have professed a hope in Christ. We miss her inour home and in the church but we feel that our loss is her great gain. Her seat is now facant in the Old Church,which she always enjoyed and filled her seat every time she reasonably could. But we feel and beleive that shehas now fille a seat in paradise with God. Grover Cleveland Osborn was born October 7, 1884 at Pikeville, Kentucky the son of Jessie and Bythie SwordOsborn and passed away June 24, 1969 at the Des Moines General Hospital after a lingering illness of five years.He married Edna Ann Low Edwards July 30, 1910 at Harrisonville, Missouri. They moved to Murray, Iowa fifty-six year ago and farmed until he moved to Des Moines 18 years ago after his first wife's death. He then took upthe carpenter trade. He was a member of the Union church for thirty-two years then joined the Park Ave.Christian Church until his death. He married Edna Mae Shannon in the spring of 1952. She passed awayNovember 7, 1965. He lived alone the rest of his life. He leaves to mourn his death nine children. Two sons,Ephriam Osborn of Osceola and Sol of Chariton. Edna Ann Low, was born January 22, 1893, at Adair, Iowa, the daughter of Ephraim Harvey and Eunice Low.Following a happy childhood in the home of her parents and brothers and sisters, she became the bride of JoshuaEdwards in 1908. To this union was born one son. She was again united in marriage in July 1910, to GroverOsborne. These two Christian people established a loving home for their three sons and eight daughters. EdnaAnn Osborne became a member of the Christian Church of Harrisonville, Missouri, on Easter Sunday, 1909 andtransferred her membership to the Union Methodist Church, when the family moved to the Union (Iowa)community, about 1920. Times were not always easy for this family, but Mrs. Osborne always gave of herabundant love to her family and all neighbors and friends who needed her in any way. Always active incommunity life and the life of her church, she served faithfully as president of the Women's Society of ChristianService of the church, until the time of her death, was a member of the Sunday school, and at one time serve as itssuperintendent. She also served as the community reporter for the county paper. Her life was saddened by thedeath of her mother in February 1932 and of her son, Alvadore Perry, Jul 8, 1945. Following a lingering illnessEdna Ann Osborne died at the home of her daughter in Creston, Iowa, Friday, March 10, at two o'clock.
