Nestled into a secluded ridge and looking north over the

glassy waters of Baroon Pocket Reservoir in North Maleny,

Queensland, is a home that enjoys privacy, tranquility and

extraordinary scenery.

Architect Tim Cronin and builder Jaicon Construction have

created a design that emphasises the interplay of interior and

exterior, with robust matrials inspired by the site, and design

solutions that respond to the sub-tropical environment.

Clever features encourage passive cooling throughout.

A panel window acts like a set of bellows to funnel a mountain

breeze above the double timber and stainless main doors.

A 2-metre deep saltwater pool at the centre of the home

provides visual delight and cooling breezes to most rooms.

Banks of louvres in split-level ceilings moderate both light

and airflow.

Dear Fellow Members,

At the dawn of the New Year, it gives me great pleasure to wish

you and your loved ones a joyous and prosperous New Year.

In this month’s message, I would like to apprise Members of the

outcome of the dialogue session held on 27 November 2014.

Essentially there were two proposals being tabled and they were 1.

the proposed Chinese restaurant and 2. the proposed amendments

of Rule 11(ii), 23(A), and 29(i) & (ii).

The General Committee (GC) has recommended that the proposed

Chinese restaurant be located on the second floor of the main

Clubhouse. This development would include the relocation of the

general administration office to the Tangles at the Sports and

Recreation complex. Apart from housing the administration office,

the Tangles area will be redeveloped to cater for a smaller café and

a business centre.

To be expected, there were some valid concerns expressed by

Members. These included the cannibalisation of the existing food

and beverage outlets, the type of cuisine to be served, access

to and from the restaurant, and the noisy environment for the

adjacent library and reading room. Members also wanted to know

whether alternatives to having a dedicated Chinese restaurant were

considered. All these concerns will be taken into consideration in

formulating the Club’s proposal to be tabled at a Special General

Meeting (SGM) to be held in the first quarter of 2015.

The second part of the Members’ dialogue was devoted to the

proposed amendments of the Club Rules.

There seemed to be optimism that a means may have been found

to break the longstanding impasse over Membership which has

caused much unhappiness in recent years. There were also

expressions of surprise that the cause of the permanent blockage

on Singaporean Memberships–nationality conversions–had gone

unrecognised.

To emphasise the extent of the blockage, the Members’ dialogue

panel pointed out that no Singaporean had been elected to

Membership of the Tanglin Club since the end of 2008 and there

were prospective applicants who had been on the waiting list

for more than 20 years. For the past few years the number of

Singaporean Members had remained stubbornly in excess of the

51% of planned total Membership (PTM) permitted under the Rules

and there had been a block on the ability to elect new Singaporean

Members.

Introduced in 1980 as a means of ensuring continuing diversity

of nationalities in the Tanglin Club, Rule 11(ii) limits Membership

of any one nationality to no more than 51% of the PTM “at any

time”. The presentation on Membership centred upon proposals

designed to open up the way for new Singaporean Members

without involving the contentious issues of ratio change or increase

in PTM. Essentially, what was being proposed was a change to

Rule 11(ii) such that ordinary Members were to be categorised

simply as Singaporean and non-

Singaporean with nationality to

be determined on a once and

for all basis as of the date of

entry to the Club only, and with

the Club being unconcerned

with subsequent nationality

conversions. New Members

would be elected on the basis

that a Singapore citizen would

fill a vacancy of an outgoing Singapore citizen Member and a

non-Singaporean citizen would fill a vacancy of an outgoing non-

Singapore citizen Member.

In response to questions on whether this meant that the 49:51

ratio would no longer apply, it was noted by the panel that if the

rule change was approved by the Membership, such that the 51%

figure disappeared, it was the intention of the GC to rebalance

Membership numbers in each category via carefully calibrated

admissions in the period immediately prior to the anticipated date

of ratification by the Registrar of Societies, when it would take full

and final effect. It follows logically that at the starting gate, the

respective numbers of non-Singaporean and Singaporean ordinary

Members would, as a matter of fact, equate to 49-51, with the

numbers in each category then being automatically carried forward

into the future by entrances in each category matching the exits.

There was debate over the linking of creation of vacancies for

new Members under the amendments proposed to Rule 23(A).

It was hoped that this increased turnover would not only assist

in the desired rejuvenation of the Club but would also bring

considerable financial benefit for the Club through an increased

pace of entrance fee receipts. The effect would be amplified by the

proposal, which was also being tabled, to increase entrance fees

from $35,000 to $50,000. On the other side of the coin, however,

some Members questioned whether, at that level of entrance fee,

a buyback price of 50 percent or $25,000 would be sufficient to

induce many Members to sell back their Membership. There was a

general welcome for the additional proposed buy-back provision

of a Member seeking to sell being entitled to request the Club to

resell his or her Membership, after it had been bought back by the

Club, to his or her child, in return for a waiver of entitlement to

the buy-back price. However, there were also some expressions

of disappointment that there was no immediate proposal to offer

to senior Members contemplating sell-back, any limited dining or

other rights to continue using the Club, which might otherwise

have served as an inducement to go through with the sell-back.

In closing may I wish one and all an enjoyable year.

Joseph Chew

Page 6: The Tanglin Times: January 2015

Fellow members,

Happy New Year! I trust that you have had an enjoyable

year-end holiday season.

Looking forward, the year 2015 is a significant year for

Singapore. It is the year when the nation will be celebrating

its 50th anniversary, a timely milestone for the Little Red

Dot to commemorate, and reflect on its journey in the past

50 years since independence.

The year 2015 is also a significant year for The Tanglin

Club as it celebrates its 150th anniversary. What started

out, in October 1865, as a convened meeting by “forty

men good and true” for the purpose of forming a suburban

social club to meet the wants of the British living in

the settlement, is today, 150 years on, a social club of

more than 8000 Members, comprising of more than 50

nationalities, and having a reputation as one of the premier

social clubs in Singapore. To commemorate this significant

year for the Club, many events have been lined up, and

will be announced via The Tanglin Times

and NewsBites.

In the last two issues of The Tanglin

Times, I introduced to you the

three pillar goals of the Members’

Communications team, which are 1)

Branding, 2) Communications, and 3)

Feedback. I furthermore expounded on

the Branding and Communications pillar

goals. In this column, I will focus on the

team’s third and final pillar goal, which

is feedback. Effective feedback from the Membership is

crucial in the communications framework as it benefits the

Club and Membership at large. The aim of the Members’

Communications team is to improve the feedback channels

for members to conveniently give their feedback and

comments about the Club’s facilities and services.

One initiative related to the Feedback pillar goal is the

F&B outlet feedback card: If you have been around the

Club in the past few months, you should have noticed

feedback cards distributed at every F&B outlet in the Club.

The cards are designed to be intuitive and easy to fill, and

shouldn’t take more than 30 seconds of your time. But

your 30 seconds would provide invaluable information to

the Club on how to improve its F&B services.

Another Feedback initiative is the year-end Club-wide

survey: If you have received this month’s issue of The

Tanglin Times at your home doorstep, you would have

noticed a year-end

Club-wide survey inset

into the magazine. The

survey is designed by

our GM Josie and the

team to be extremely

convenient to fill, and

will help the Management

quantitatively measure

Member satisfaction regarding the Club’s facilities

and services.

To further improve Member access to the Club-wide survey,

there is also an online version of the survey which would

have been sent out to all Members who have subscribed to

the NewsBites service.

To incentivise Members to participate in the Club-wide

survey, those who have filled out the online Club-wide

survey will stand a chance to win $1,000

in Club cash. Members who have filled

out the paper survey will stand a chance

to win $500 in Club cash. Spouse and

children members over the age of

16 are welcome to participate in the

survey. If you wish to participate in the

online survey, but haven’t subscribed

to the NewsBites service, please drop

an email to Habib, our senior Marketing

& Communications executive,

via the following email address:

[email protected].

It’s going to be an exciting year at the Club. I would like to

take this opportunity to wish you a rich and fulfilling year

ahead.

In closing, I leave you with the following quote:

“Tomorrow, is the first blank page of a 365 page book.

write a good one.” – Brad Paisley

Enjoy our magazine!

To incentivise Members to participate in the Club-wide survey, those who havefilled out the online Club-wide survey will stand a chance to win $1,000 in Club cash. Members who have filledout the paper survey will stand a chance to win $500 in

Dear Members

Happy New Year! Or shall I say Feliz Año Nuevo! This

January, we are giving Tanglin a Spanish twist. We’re very

pleased to welcome Chef Esmeraldo from 9 January to 8

February. We have arranged several events, promotions

and demonstrations while he is here, so that you can get

to know him and discover the wonders of Spanish culture

and cuisine, right here from the comfort of your Club! We

invite you to meet Chef E, as he is affectionately known,

during his residency at the Club.

Spanish Sundays await you at the Churchill Room for lunch.

Paella, Spanish suckling pig, an assortment of tapas, are

just a few of the delectable dishes Chef E will be preparing

for you. Chef’s Spanish Gourmet Wine Dinner is sure to be

a sell-out, so be sure to book soon. For details of the full

menu, complete with wine pairing, please turn to page 16.

If ‘tapas and tipples’ are to your liking, then you will be

pleased to know that we’ve stocked up our bars with

some Spanish favourites. Salim, our Beverage Manager,

has especially arranged to have Estrella, Sangria, Segura

Viudas Brut Reserva Cava, and more brought in to

compliment Chef’s creations, during his stay. Though you

can enjoy an assortment of tapas and tipples in any of our

bars from 6 pm to 11 pm, during Happy Hour (6 pm - 8

pm), pitchers of sangria are on offer for a song at a near

cost price of $20.15, to mark the new year! And to spice

up your weekends, from 6-8 pm, Los Pintos will set the

mood, Friday and Saturday, 9 January to 7 February at the

Fireplace. More details can be found on pages 18 and 19.

Chef E will give all of our salad bars a Spanish twist

during his stay and he will also host a Spanish cooking

demonstration 29 January. In between these various events

and promotions, Chef will be conducting some training

for our culinary team to help us hone our Mediterranean

skills. With about 50 years of culinary experience under his

apron, we look forward to having Chef impart some of his

trade secrets on us. To learn more about Chef Esmeraldo,

and the line-up that we have planned for you, please take

a few minutes to read page 12 and 13.

Continuing on this culinary conversation, I would also like

to once again congratulate our very own Executive Chef,

Louis, for leading Singapore’s national culinary team to

clench the gold at the EXPOGAST 2014. You may have

caught this featured in our recent NewsBites, or in the

numerous publications that featured this fantastic win

for Singapore, but if not, page 9 includes more details.

We’re very proud that Chef Louis not only put the little red

dot’s culinary talent in the spotlight again, but The Tanglin

Club’s too!

We’re also very excited to

share that Ron Kaufman,

one of the world’s most

sought-after educators,

thought-leaders and

customer service speakers

on the topic of achieving

superior service will be in

the Club 5 January to help

guide our Team to greater heights. For over two decades,

UP! Your Service Founder and Chairman Ron Kaufman

has helped companies like Singapore Airlines and Changi

Airport build a culture of uplifting service that delivers real

business results. Stay tuned for an update in our February

issue of The Tanglin Times.

This year also marks a very special year for the Club–

its 150th Anniversary. A line-up of special events have

been scheduled: Old Time Music Hall by The Stage Club

on 18 April, a Family Day Carnival on 16 May, and the

annual Club Party with the theme ‘The Tanglin Club Goes

International’ on 10 October. Details of other events will be

communicated to you in upcoming issues and NewsBites.

We also have limited-edition Anniversary memorabilia such

as mugs, tumblers, and a special Tanglin Teddy for the

little ones. More details are on page 11.

On an administrative note, capital funds have been

approved in the new fiscal year budget, to upgrade our IT

systems. If you are from the IT industry and have robust

expertise, specifically within the realm of ERP and CRM,

and you are interested to support the Club in this effort,

we would be delighted to have you as a volunteer. If you

are interested, please email me at josie.tulipano@tanglin-

club.org.sg.

Last, but not least, I’d like to encourage you to please help

us serve you better, by taking a few minutes to respond

to our inaugural annual Member satisfaction survey. Your

feedback will help us better steer the Club forward. It’s

designed to take a pulse check across about a dozen key

points and enables you to elaborate on your thoughts and

hopes for enhanced service, offerings, and programmes.

Once again, Happy New Year!

See you at the Club.

undisputed championsthree times in a row:expogast 2014

Singapore’s national culinary team, for the second time

in a row, became the overall champion at the Expogast

Culinary World Cup in Luxembourg in November, and we

are very proud of our own Executive Chef Louis Tay, for

leading the team to glory. Beating 29 other countries for

the prestigious title, it went on to win gold medals in the

Hot Cooking and Cold Display categories.

The Expogast Culinary World Cup is an international

culinary competition and trade show, held once every

four years, and was into its 12th instalment in 2014. The

Singapore team won the competition twice previously,

in 1998 and 2010. The culinary team of 2014 comprised

of Chef Louis, and Chef Yew Eng Tong from the Ocean

Restaurant, Chef Teo Yeow Siang from Lavish Dine

Catering, Chef Jim Gim from The Club at Marina Bay

Sands, Chef Triston Fang from Equinox Restaurant at

Swissôtel The Stamford, and Chef Ivy Wong from Fairmont

Singapore, along with eight assistants.

The Singapore team was chosen by the Singapore

Chef’s Association, of which Chef Louis is a member,

and training began in mid-February. Chef Louis

led the team as manager, with Chef Yew as team

captain. They trained 20 hours a week, usually until

the wee hours of the morning.

For the Hot Cooking category, the competing teams

were given five hours to prepare a three-course

menu for 120 people, completely from scratch. The

Singapore team’s winning menu had an appetiser of

warm terrine of white halibut with blue lobster and

scallop, lobster fritter, smoked eel tortellini with

light crustacean cream of salicorne and caviar, and

vegetable remoulade. The main course included a

roast brine-cured pigeon breast with caramelised

hazelnut, pigeon liver and duck pate, creamed

cabbage with confit legs, dukka spice, pumpkin

ginger mousseline and port wine jus. For dessert,

it was baked William pear with zesty meringue,

fromage blanc yuzu sorbet, and almond sable.

In the Cold Display category, the team had to

prepare a food showcase displayed on a rectangular

table measuring three metres long. Items which were

included had a seafood platter, a five-course gourmet

menu, and a dessert showpiece. Interestingly, all

the food items were actually prepared hot, were

displayed cold, and glazed with aspic.

A former participant who represented team

Singapore, Mr Randy Chow, summed up the feelings

of last year’s team perfectly: “Victory is sweeter

knowing that we have beaten some of the world’s

best.” Congratulations to the team, and to Chef

Louis Tay, who has done not only Singapore proud,

but The Tanglin Club as well.

Yazeed is well-known amongst his

for mistaking him to be always serious.

Working with Yazeed, however, makes

one realise that under the professional

calm of an Executive Housekeeper,

lies a highly intellectual individual with

In November, Indika Fernando, the Club staff’s unofficial ‘green

conservation. This is an excerpt from his presentation:

“The success of an energy efficiency initiative depends on people,

as much as or even more than technology. To maximise the energy

saving potential in the Club, it is important to make the effort to raise

the awareness of this issue to everyone. The world’s population

is increasing demand of energy, even though the world’s non-

renewable resources are quickly depleting, with far-reaching effects

on our environment. This is a challenge for us to be more serious on

this issue, while seeking cost-saving solutions.

To be truly energy efficient, we must make changes in the way we

behave, in the technologies we adopt, and in internal policies and

procedures.

EnErgY ConSErvAtIon AwArEnESS progrAm

In the past few years, we have made significant improvements to

technologies we adopt, such as integrating an energy-efficient

chiller to our central air-conditioning system; replacing almost all

non-inverter conventional air conditioning systems to VRV inverter

systems, introducing a heat pump system and solar heating to

replace our traditional water heaters, and replacing our buildings’

lighting systems to the most efficient LED technology.

However, no single change can deliver maximum savings and thus,

technology alone cannot achieve optimal results. But, when coupled

with our behavioural changes and operational practices, as well as

management systems, it can lead to significant savings.”

Staff left the presentation with a greater understanding and

appreciation of energy conservation in the Club, and have initiated

individual effort into making the Club more energy efficient.

Start with a base of Queen Elizabeth II, King Juan

Carlos, and Queen Sofia. Add in a few handfuls

of Arabian princes and top with a few Canadian

premiers and you have the impressive list of guests

Master Chef Esmeraldo Oteruelo has served in a

distinguished career that spans nearly four decades

and is peppered with numerous medals and

accolades from around the world.

We are proud to announce that Chef E (as he is

affectionately known) will be arriving at The Tanglin

Club for a limited engagement in January, so now

you can add one more name to that remarkable

guest list: you.

While he is at the Club Chef E will assist Chef

Louis and his team with their attention to detail

in Mediterranean dining. He will also provide us

with the unique opportunity to experience the rich

heritage of Spain and Spanish food.

Spain is close to Chef E’s heart and rightfully so.

He was born in the small Spanish village of Pozos

where he learned first-hand about mixed farming (a

combination of agricultural farming with the raising of

livestock). The time he spent herding animals, planting

and harvesting crops, and plowing the land formed

his love of fresh ingredients early on, something that

he continues to focus on in his cooking to this day.

He also values his formative years in Spain for giving

him the opportunity to work with an abundance of

fresh delicacies, many unknown to most of the

world, allowing him to learn at an early age how

to appreciate the natural flavours and goodness in

food. He discovered the importance of simplicity and

focusing on the quality of his products as an essential

basis for creating excellent dishes during this time

as well.

Esmeraldo has spent decades perfecting his self-

proclaimed “Italian Mama”-style of cooking, honing

his skills in Spain, Switzerland, Canada, Indonesia,

China, and Hong Kong. He spent eight years as the

Executive Chef at the American Club Singapore,

where he was able to master Continental cooking to

a standard that competes with his southern European

If you’ve always been keen to try cooking

up some Spanish cuisine at home, here’s

your chance to learn how to prepare some

authentic dishes from Chef Esmeraldo.

Spanish cuisine is incredibly varied and is

influenced by a variety of cultures, but the

food is simple, unpretentious, and incredibly

fun to cook, and eat, of course! Join us, and

you’ll be cooking up a Spanish storm in no

favorites. Combined with his solid foundation of

formal culinary training in Spain, Switzerland, and

Canada, he has learned to blend various flavors and

cooking styles with the finesse of a fine artist. And

with so many years of technical fine-tuning and his

breadth of multicultural experience, Chef E’s list of

signature dishes is broad and diverse. You’ll find

specialties ranging from Spanish, Mediterranean,

Italian, and Southern French cuisines to Canadian

and North American dishes—and each is as delicious

as the next.

Currently Chef E owns and operates a rustic getaway

in Spain, Esme Tours, where he gives his guests the

opportunity to experience a love affair with food and

the land. There he focuses on the culture, customs,

beliefs, food, and wine of Spain to keep the heritage

and traditions he grew up with alive. A big believer

in the Slow Food movement, Esmeraldo uses local,

seasonal, and organic ingredients at Esme Tours,

which provide guests with an authentic Spanish

experience.

We invite you to meet Chef E during his residency at

The Tanglin Club. We have arranged several events,

promotions, and demonstrations while he is here,

so that you can get to know him and discover the

wonders of Spanish culture and cuisine.

Our Spanish promotions, which runs from 9 January

to 7 February, will enable you to experience some of

his traditional favorites such as paella, baby lamb,

a variety of tapas and seafood dishes, and Spanish

suckling pig, which we know will be a favourite for

many, especially during our Spanish Lunch Buffet at

the Churchill on Sundays.

For those looking to learn some of the secrets behind

authentic, delicious Spanish cooking, please make

it a point to join Chef E for his Spanish Cooking

Demonstration on Thursday, 29 January 3pm to 5pm

at the Churchill Room Bar.

We invite you to experience the fun of tapas and

live entertainment by Los Pintos during Happy Hour.

More details on page 18.

And finally, be sure to make clear your calendar

and make a reservation to attend Chef Esmeraldo’s

Spanish Wine Dinner on Thursday, 22 January, 7pm

at the Churchill Room. Chef E will delight and excite

you with his culinary skills and the specially selected

wines he’s chosen to accompany this gourmet

dinner. This is an event not to be missed, so be sure

to reserve early to avoid disappointment.

INTRODUCING LAPhROAIGSINGLE MALT whISky qUARTER CASkAvailable at all bars

Laphroaig Quarter Cask offers an irresistible doubling of flavour, due to the double maturation in two barrels made of American oak. Still-maturing whisky from our standard ex-bourbon barrels is transferred to quarter casks and left to rest in our warehouse just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic shore.

This process represents Laphroaig breathing new life into a once-defunct tradition: the use of the smaller cask size, which ensures increased contact with the oak, creating a soft and velvety edge to complement Laphroaig’s distinctive peatiness.

On the nose the sensation is toffee and caramel, caused by the vanillas and tannins of the American oak, plus a dryness from the wood oil. The finish is long and alternates between this sweetness and smoke.

GOURMET SECTION: GENERATING INTERESTThe Gourmet Section has generated much interest amongst

the Members of The Club since its formation two months

ago. Upcoming events of the Section includes a Russian

meal in January, as well as a trip to Japan on 27 March to

savour local Japanese cuisine, on top of Sakura-viewing.

The following is the tentative itinerary:

Day 1. Depart Singapore for Fukuoka

Day 2. Fukuoka-Oita

Day 3. Oita-Aso-Kumamoto

Day 4. Kumamoto-Yanagawa-Kurume-Kumamoto

Day 5. Kumamoto-Kagoshima-Ibusuki

Day 6. Ibusuki-Fukuoka

Day 7. Fukuoka

Day 8. Fukuoka-Singapore

Day 9. Singapore

The trip excluding taxes and surcharges, as well as appropriate

tipping for driver and tour guide will cost approximately $3,390 per

pax on a twin-sharing basis. These would sum to an estimation of

$4,000 per pax.

Besides the proposed Russian Meal and the upcoming Japan trip,

we are also working in having a well-known food blogger to talk to

Members of the Section about food in Singapore.

More updates will be made available in due course. If you are

interested in joining the Gourmet Section, please feel free to

contact Anqi at 6622 0438.

ChOIR SECTION: AFTER ThREE yEARSThe Tanglin Club Choir continues the tradition of carolling at The

Club’s Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony ever since its

establishment three years ago.

The Choir first performed three carols, namely Star Carol, Stille

Nacht (German version of Silent Night), and A Merry Christmas,

followed by a sing-a-long with the crowd present at the Tree

Lighting Ceremony. Although Star Carol was an unfamiliar piece

to many, the audience enjoyed this carol as much as popular ones

which seemed new and refreshing to them.

Overwhelming responses were received on the performance put

up by The Tanglin Club Choir. The audiences commented on the

tremendous progress made by the Choir since the Tree Lighting

Ceremony last year, and are looking forward to more performances

by them.

Moving forward, the Choir hopes to recruit more male singers in

the coming year. Male Members are highly encouraged to come

forward in joining us as our Choir Master Albert has planned a few

songs dedicated for the men to show off their singing ability.

Interested Members please call Anqi at 66220438 or Tina at

66220437 to register with them.

BILLIARDS RECAP

Happy New Year one and all! Wishing everyone the very best

for the year ahead! We ended 2014 with a flurry of activities

that made the past year indeed a very memorable one.

Penang–Ipoh Trip, 7 to 8 November 2014

We finally managed to make it up this year to visit our

neighbours at the Royal Penang Club and the Royal Ipoh

Club. The friendlies were played long and furious with plenty

of jovial banter and whiskey of course! We lost both friendly

matches–but we certainly gave them a good fight. Thank you

the team of Adrian To, Remus Wong, Paul Wong, Cheung

Yew Tak, and Alex Yew.

November 2014 Section Night

Our usual Monthly Section Night also saw some really

good action with everyone having a great time and we

congratulate the winners–Davin Liok and Ken Jin for ruling

the night with the most number of wins and highest

break respectively!

Concorde Trophy 2014

This year’s competition saw a new entrant–Paul Mcconomy

who turned up and almost gave everyone a great lesson in

what snooker was all about! The finals held on 24 November

2014 was very well attended and all eyes were on the final

match players–Paul Mcconomy, and Cheng Yew Tak. After a

very tense and keenly fought final, Yew Tak managed to pull

away for the win! Congratulations to both–the champion, Yew

Tak, and a very well-deserved runner-up, Paul Mcconomy.

Please do join us in the year ahead starting with our Monthly

Section Nights and in our regular competitions. Looking

forward to playing with you all!

BRIDGE PAIRS ChAMPIONShIPS, SATURDAy 15 NOVEMBER

“We are the Champions”.....that’s Anjna Beri and Jyoti Singh when they topped the scores of a gruelling full-

day match of two sessions. As the lyrics of the song go “and bad mistakes I’ve made a few...but I’ve come

through”–that was so true of the champs who peaked at the right time. Raj Jayaram and Vimala Samuel came

a close second in the championships.

The full day of bridge (six hours in all with an hour’s break for a yummy lunch in the Tangles) proved too much

for most players who had to flee the card room immediately after the tournament, waxed and waned.

Well done and congratulations to the winners. For the rest of us, better luck next time.

DARTS SECTION MONThLy LUNChEON – 8 NOV 2014

Our happy Darts Day gathering on Saturday afternoon experienced a large turn-out of Darts Section Members

participating in a party-like atmosphere with food, fun, games, prizes, and chocolates.

We started with a delicious lunch of aloo chat, chickpea salad, butter chicken, mixed vegetable curry, pappadam,

briyani and wonderful healthy desserts. Kudos to the chef for the excellently-spiced buffet!

Many Darts Games were played starting with 501 Men versus Women. The Women won most of the games. The men

graciously accepted the loss, like gentlemen. Winners were: Nancy Lum, Nancy Ee, and Theresa Gaubier. As the

afternoon went on, the women gained momentum, winning more games. Mixed Doubles was won by William Ee

and Nancy Lum. Other games were played to hone the skill of accuracy: Bulls Eye, Mickey Mouse and Cricket.

In all, the large crowd thoroughly enjoyed themselves, only dispersing in the late evening. We invite all to join

us every second Saturday of the month for a day of lunch and happy darting.

PERSONAL TRAINING CORNER

Here are some tips for making

abdominal workouts effective.

Do you work your abs differently from

other muscles in your body? Abdominal

muscles are just like every other muscle

in your body, This means doing strength

work 2-3 times a week with rest in

between and a variety of exercises to

target different areas of the abs.

Unfortunately, spot reduction doesn’t

work. either for the abs or for any other

part of the body. The only way to burn

fat from your belly is to reduce overall

body fat by creating a calorie deficit.

The healthiest way to do that is with

consistent exercise routine of cardio,

weight/strength training and flexibility.

Here are a few exercises to think about:

Before starting, do a 5-10 min warm

up to get the heart rate going. All

exercises can be done from 1-3 sets of

12-16 reps.

Below we have Crystal Winslow, our personal trainer, guiding us with the following exercises.

Bicycle (Obliques)

Vertical Leg crunch (upper and lower abs)

Plank (core)

Lie face up on your mat and place

your hands behind your head, lightly

supporting with your fingers. Bring knees

to the chest and lift shoulder blades off

the floor without pulling on your neck.

Rotate to the left, bringing elbow towards

the left knee as you straighten the other

leg. Switch sides, bring left elbow towards

right knee. Continue alternating sides in a

“pedaling” motion.

Lie on the floor and extend the legs straight

up with knees crossed. Place hands behind

the head for support, avoid pulling on your

neck. Contract the abs to lift the shoulder

blades off the floor, as though reaching

your chest towards your feet. Keep the legs

in a fixed position.

Lie face down on mat resting on the

forearms, palms flat on the floor. Push off

the floor, raising up to the toes and resting

on the elbows. Keeping back flat with

shoulders slightly rounded, feet slightly

apart. Tilt your hips to be square, contracting

abs to prevent your bottom from sticking up

into the air or sagging in the middle. Hold

for 20-60 seconds, lower and repeat for

3-5 reps

Hong Kong over the period 21 to 24 November, and played

matches against the Hong Kong Football Club, Kowloon

Cricket Club and Kowloon Bowling Green Club.

After flying to Hong Kong on different flights over the course

of Friday, The Tanglin Club team gathered in the lobby of

the team hotel in the late afternoon for the short MTR ride,

and not so short walk, to the Hong Kong Football Club for

our evening match on their indoor green. Some Tanglin

players took a little while to adjust to the indoor lighting and

surface, whilst a few adjusted quite quickly. Well done to

Denis and Ted for carrying our convenor, who was blaming

his performance on “jet lag”.

Our match on Saturday afternoon was played against the

Kowloon Cricket Club on a slightly sloping green, which

was an interesting experience. Whilst the home side had a

distinct advantage in this respect congratulations should go

to Zoher, Sylvia, and Nicky who won a close game on the

last few ends. The match on Sunday afternoon was against

the Kowloon Bowling Green Club. The team took a few ends

to overcome the effects of the evening before but by the end

were all playing like demons.

I must thank all our hosts for making us so welcome at

their clubs and for their extra ordinary hospitality. For the

record The Tanglin Club lost to Hong Kong Football Club

and Kowloon Cricket Club, but had an honourable draw with

Kowloon Bowling Green Club–wining two, losing two and

drawing one. A thoroughly enjoyable tour was had by all and

we now look forward to the next one! Did someone mention

Australia?

ThE TANGLIN TORDEPOES-JUNIOR AND COMPETITIVE SwIM SqUADThe Tanglin Torpedoes is The Tanglin Club’s swim team. We train on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday evenings at our Club swimming pool. The team has a very exciting schedule in 2015, there are 10 swim meets in the year as we are involved in two Swim League. The two leagues are: the Neptune League and the Merlion League/

The Neptune League includes the following clubs; Singapore Island Country club, British Club, Hollandse Club and Swiss Club. The Merlion League includes the British Club, Marsden Swim Squad, ACSian Falcon Swim team, and the American Club.

The Junior Squad’s primary objective is to learn the skills involved in swimming by developing each of the four competitive strokes. Also, we introduce to them swim training, rules and discipline. The Competitive Squad’s objective is developing efficient and effective techniques while progressively extending the volume of training. Swimming is both solo and a team sport. It teaches the child important life lessons of self-discipline, sportsmanship, time management, setting goals and achieving them. The best reason for getting your children involved in competitive swimming is the friendships that they will develop, and teammates often become lifelong friends.

wAR OF ThE ROSES SqUASh COMPETITION

The Tanglin Club played the British Club for their annual War

of the Roses Squash Competition on Saturday, 8 November.

There was a good mix of grades from A grade players down

to the lower order. The match commenced at 3pm and was

played best of five games up to 15. Most matches were very

close as each player had been graded to match his or her

opponent and so the contest was still going strong long after

5pm. There was a titanic match between William Oon and

Charlie Thomas, where William just came out on top although

Charlie had a reasonable excuse having just stepped off

a plane that morning. The whole tournament which was

finely poised at three matches all, and on back count

12 games all came down to the last game with match

between Rhodri Roberts and Ben Carpenter. Rhodri powered

through to win 3-1 and retain the War of The Roses Cup for

The Tanglin Club.

There was a great social gathering afterwards where both

teams sat down to some cold beer and a huge curry spread

which could have fed the whole of the Tanglin Squash

Section. Many thanks for all those that got involved and a

great effort to retain the trophy.

ThE CLAyMORE CUP

The Tanglin Club played their annual

squash friendly The Claymore Cup

against the American Club on the 15th of

November. Both sides were well matched

and all of the games were played over

the Saturday afternoon, some of which

were very hotly contested. Eventually The

Tanglin Club managed to come out on top

and retain the Trophy, both teams retired

to the gardens for some well-deserved

drinks and the standard food fare of

buttered chicken and rice.

A LETTER TO OUR DEAR COSMONAUTS

As you are probably aware, we went into the last match

with Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) four points up and only

needing two matches for an outright win. In theory, we could

win by only winning one match but that would have involved

a count back on our last meeting which was 13-8 games in

our favour.

Rob Subbaraman was first up to play as he has to attend

these unusual conference calls at 7.45pm, we are not sure

what these calls are about but he does have some dodgy

numbers on speed dial. It was a tough match from the very

beginning and each player had a very similar style so the

game lasted a considerable time. Eventually Rob prevailed,

there was so much going on that I can’t remember the final

score, it was either 3-1 or 3-2 to Rob. So Tanglin got off to

a great start with a crucial win which piled the pressure on

to SCC.

As Rob was playing, Sam Alexander took to the court playing

a guy called Tony, and both had very similar styles i.e. lets

try to hit the ball as hard and as fast as we can. Unfortunately

for Sam, I was marking the match and in the spirit of Cosmo,

I was slightly lenient on the calls although refereeing this

match with testosterone oozing from the court was a

challenge. To give you an idea there were at least 5-6 serves

below the service line with each players efforts to hit the ball

as hard as they could. Sam struggled to find a rhythm partly

because of the occasion, and partly his anger was directed at

my refereeing decisions, whichever it was the teams efforts

to calm him down were to little avail, and he went out in three

straight games; The Tanglin Club 1, SCC 1.

The next two matches got underway with Rishaal and Thomas

taking to the courts. Rishaal was up against a very good

opponent, SCC had done their homework very well and had

picked a good final team which worked for them in Rishaal’s

case as he lost 3-0.

This left the Frenchman, Thomas, who had brought with

him a bevy of beautiful girls as cheerleaders, he is so very

French. Right from the outset you could see it was going to

be a long match as both players were perfectly matched.

As the game progressed, the British Club who had come

down under the guise as invigilators but appeared to be

more concerned with the temperature of the beer did come

out with one interesting piece of commentary. As we were

loosing 2-1 on matches and had lost each match 3-0 the

count-back had now reversed in SCC’s favour so if we lost

these matches we would also loose on count-back. As this

statistic slowly filtered through to everyones’ beer-adjusted

brains, you could see the penny drop and the significance of

this match. Without sounding too melodramatic as Puneet

was struggling somewhat in his final match against a player

who has played at a lot higher level the Cosmo title was

going to be won or lost on the match between Thomas and

his opponent. The tension visibly increased, and when their

match was tied at 2-2, the Cosmo title was resting on one

game, I’m breaking into a sweat just writing about this now.

A closely fought final game seemed to go on forever but

eventually Thomas’s opponent cracked first and he started

to snatch at the ball and make some unforced errors, and

with that last game we won the Cosmo league.

Luckily someone had the foresight to let Puneet know who

was visibly relieved as by this time was trailing in his match

and going down to what looked like an inevitable loss.

So there you have it folks, The Tanglin Club has won the

Cosmo League, we thought for the first time ever although

Mr Palmer has corrected us as it appears we won it back

in 1990 and has produced some very dubious pictures of

victory celebrations.

Many thanks for all of those that took part, everyone of you

can honestly say that every point, every game and match

won was a vital contribution to us winning the Cosmo league

a great team effort well done team.

CELEBRATING OUR 40Th ANNIVERSARy

The Scuba Section’s customary end-of-season

party in November was also a celebration of

our 40th anniversary. Established in 1974, the

Section was one of the first Scuba clubs in the

region, when recreational diving was still in

its infancy.

Members and guests convened at Tangles to

reunite with dive buddies, old and new, and

to commemorate the occasion. Many were

delighted to see our old boatman Ah Chuan,

who for almost 30 years, regularly ferried us

out to dive the southern islands on Saturday

afternoons.

After a delicious meal, veteran divers recounted

their experiences diving with the Section,

regaling us with stories of the past, when diving

infrastructure was non-existent, and coral reefs

were pristine and sea-life abundant. Favourite

memories included Malaysian expeditions

during which Members had to cart huge boxes

of food and condiments, cooking and washing

equipment, and even a compressor. Those were

the days when divers were far fewer in numbers

and lobsters were in abundance.

Stephan Keiser, a Swiss friend of mine from Zurich and I decided

to do something different in 2014. Instead of going to the usual

resorts like Whistler or Hokkaido, we decided to go to LAAX in

February this year with some Malaysian friends in Switzerland.

LAAX is the largest winter sports region in Graubünden,

Switzerland. It is located in the Swiss Alps and is currently voted

as Switzerland’s best Ski Resort from World Ski Awards.

I was thrilled to ride

on its two brand new

chair lifts. One of

them was designed

by Porsche Design

Studios. They were

the same designers

who gave us the latest

gadgets for Porsche

cars.

The chairs

automatically rotate

by 45 degrees at

the exit point, by means of a pivot in the mounting attachment.

They gave me an unhindered view of the breath-taking mountain

panorama. The heated seats of the new designer lift, powered by

solar panels, provided more comfort. I could not experience such

wonders anywhere in North America.

The beginner area, with its snow park, is unique in the Alpine

region. This is where beginners can make their first attempts to ski

and snowboard, at their own pace or with professional instruction,

on the prepared slopes. All of us took lessons to fine tune our ski

and snow board techniques.

LAAX proved to

me that winter

sports mean

more than just

skiing and

s n o w b o a r d i n g .

Winter sports

were experience

and relaxation,

adventure and escape, enjoyment and companionship.

My friends and I found it convenient to travel up and down the

mountains with our ski and snowboard equipment. There are 29

LAAX–Winter WonderLAnd of SWitzerLAnd And europe A Must–Visit Allure For Singapore Tourists And Skiers

mountain lifts (several gondolas and high-speed chair lifts)

over 235 kilometers of ski slopes.

As we were all from Singapore and Malaysia, a winter vacation

must be one with exposure to all kinds of gastronomical

delights. There are more than 15 restaurants and eateries

in LAAX. My favourite one was Alpenrose where my friends

and I could sample rustic grill and other Italian cuisines.

As we were having our winter vacation in Switzerland, our

food experience must include the Swiss Rosti variations

and the fondue-stube. We found this at our favourite Swiss

restaurant Tegia Larnags.

LAAX makes it easy for families to enjoy exciting and

relaxing holidays. The Snow Wonderland is a unique skiing

school centred around the magician Ami Sabi. In this magic

wonderland, children hear stories, sing songs and learn a lot

about the forest, the animals and the mountains. They also

have great fun learning to ski.

My Malaysian friends had already returned to LAAX to

celebrate their birthdays this Summer. I will return with my

kids in February 2015.

Eileen Chanin’s Limbang Rebellion: 7 Days in December 1962 has

been honoured by the Royal Marines historical Society with the 2014

Literary Award. here are some of the reviews:

The book highlights true heroes such as police personnel and ordinary

people who did extraordinary things to protect and save others in great

danger. –Borneo Post

This is a human tale of courage, fortitude and bravery…It is a gripping

tale of seven dramatic days that helped quell the initial North Kalimantan

National Army efforts of taking over the whole of Borneo Island. It was

the beginning of a wider and longer campaign that came to be called

Confrontation. –Globe and Laurel

It also gives an engrossing account of the bold commando assault

on Limbang. Chanin’s account of the improvised attack, the Marines

traveling by night in two commandeered barges, will delight any military

buff. –Sydney Morning Herald

With an impressive command of detail, the author has gathered witness

accounts from her own interviews and a treasure trove of archival material

that give the reader a visceral understanding of what it was like to be a

prisoner, and what it was like to be a soldier seeing action for the first

time. –The Australian

LIMBANG REBELLION: SEVEN DAYS IN DECEMBER 1962by Eileen ChaninBetween 8 and 12 December of 1962, world attention focused on a surprise rebel

uprising that sprang up in northern Borneo, where hostages were taken and threatened

with execution. The small river town of Limbang, administrative center of the Fifth

Division of the British Crown colony of Sarawak, was the pivot of the confrontation that

Harold Macmillan told John F. Kennedy was as dangerous a situation in South East Asia

as the Western Allies had seen since the Second World War. The Brunei revolt turned

out to be the opening act of the diplomatic and military conflict between Indonesia and

Malaysia known as Confrontation (‘Konfrontasi’).

BELLE (2014)Starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Matthew Goode and Emily Watson Directed by Amma Asante

Gugu Mbatha-Raw delivers “a breakthrough performance” (Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times) in this “gorgeous must-see film” (Caro

Murray, Essence) that’s based on an extraordinary true story. Although Dido Elizabeth Belle (Mbatha-Raw), an 18th Century English

woman of mixed race, is raised in privilege by her aristocratic great-uncle (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), she is denied

a proper social standing because of her skin colour. But when Dido falls in love with a young idealist lawyer (Sam Reid) who aspires

to create positive change, she finds herself caught between two worlds. With everything to lose, she struggles to convince those

around her – and society in which she lives – to overcome their biases and accept her fully. Only if she succeeds will she find true

happiness in this exquisite masterpiece that also stars Miranda Richardson, Penelope Wilton and Matthew Goode.
