TrimaX-Hebdo will now be translated into three languages: French, English and German.

For this first edition of 2015, we’ll talk about those who will get back in game their titles. So we’ll have a glance at the Long Distance and Short distance triathlon world champions, in duathlon and in off-road triathlon as well. And who will be the triathlete of the year 2015? You’re wondering. We also do. Our prognosis are in this edi-tion...

We will also offer you an article about the Challenge Bahreïn race, nutrition advice to have a good nutrition during your training. We’ll

also present you a new rubric «The Pro’s Trick» which will underline the habits of a pro triathletes, their technical tricks or their little secrets. This month, Simon Billeau will present his bike adjustments for Hawaii 2015.

Regarding the material, we’ve tried for you a new type of trisuit. The one that we’ve tried is a Kiwami.

Anyway, in 2015, the redaction of TrimaX-Hebdo listens to you and will try even more to live and think at your pace and that of our common passion: triathlon...

their title in 2015

RETROSPECTIVE

DBertrand Billard, who already won in Belfort in 2013, raced in China on the site of Weihai who welcomed for the 1st

time the ITU world championships, on a special format: 4-115-20. Very fitted, the French could race a difficult bike part which suited him. Together with his teammate Sylvain Sudrie, le two men pushed hard, but Sudrie fell off his bike and Billard arrived alone in the

bike park with almost 40» lead. He kept the lead and won again for the 2nd time in a row in front of 2 French guys! We had a historical triplet for France because the podium was 100% blue-white-red.

One year after her bike accident which caused her numerous fractures and 19 days in the coma, the Danish girl Camilla Pedersen came back to racing with the world title !As for the men race, the victory was built during the bike. As a very good cyclist, Pedersen realized the best bike split which allowed her to lead. With 3’ lead in T2, she could run towards a world title which she couldn’t even dare to hope in this difficult year!

They will fight again for their title... On June 28th in

Motola (Sweden).

Even if the Olympian champion Alistair Brownlee won the final in Edmonton, the Spanish Javier Gomez kept for the 4th time the Word number 1 rank. In the final ranking, he is followed by Mario Mola and Jonathan Brownlee. For the women, no doubt, Gwen Jorgensen is the triathlete who dominates the World series. Her fall in 2013 is behind her, her hopes of victory come back, she wins in Edmonton and also the number 1 rank in front of Sarah Groff and Andrea Hewitt.

They will all get back in play their title... All along the season in different world cups and during the final in Chicago from

he 15th to the 20th of September.

This year the 70.3 world championships took place for the first time in Mont-Tremblant in Canada after Las Vegas in 2013. It took place on September 7th. The men race turned into a dual between the two strong men of the moment: Javier Gomez and Ian Frodeno. Even if they were around 10 men to arrive in T2 at the same time, the title would be between the Spanish and the German with the same pedestrian qualities! None of the two champions cracked and Javier Gomez won regularly and giving everything with 40» lead on the Olympian champion in Pekin, Jan Frodeno. The women race was very open with Melissa Haushildt being injured. But the winner of the day was a revelation. For her second season in this distance only, the Swiss Daniela Ryf won, especially with a very fast bike split.

They will get back in play their title... On August 30th in Zell AmSee (Austria)

It was in Hawaii, in the IM format universe, on Big Island in Kona that Sebastian Kienle was offered his first title of IM world champion after dominating the 70.3 race during two years. The one who finished 3rd in 2013 didn’t leave any chance to the others. Announced as one of the big favorite of this event, the German broke away on the bike under difficult weather conditions (very strong wind) and then had a very comfortable lead before the marathon and he won with more than 5 minutes lead.

Regarding the women, Mirinda Carfrae obtained her third victory. Far behind on the swim and bike (14’ of delay in T2), she could catch up the others thanks again to a very fast marathon (2h50), passing the very impressive Daniela Ryf. The latter did a very fast bike course, a few weeks

after her victory in Mont-Tremblant.

The French began to be well-known for the first time in 2014 by winning the title during the Long distance duathlon French championships in front of all the favorites. He won again a few weeks after during the world championships in Zofingen. At only 26 years old, he managed to win everything in front of such guys as Vansteelant or Woestenborghs. In the women race, the British Emma Pooley had a successful reconversion. Professional cyclist from 2007 to 2014 (with the title of time trial world champion in 2010), she won the world title for her first season in the discipline.

In Pontevedra in Spain, the French shined during these world championships by winning the Gold for the women as for the men, with Sandra Levenez and Benoît Nicolas.

After 3 silver medals (2009, 2010, 2013) and 2 bronze medals (2011 and 2012), Sandra’s ambitions was to win !

She was the big favorite. She honored her grade by finally winning the world title.

Regarding the men, he assisted to a French-French dual between Benoît Nicolas and Etienne Diemunsch for the title. Without really realizing it, Benoît Nicolas crossed the finish line the first and won the title.

A few months after winning in cross triathlon, the Spanish Ruben Ruzafa won again in Maui, up for a third world title after his coronations in 2008 and 2013. The fastest as usual on the bike, Ruben Ruzafa also had a very good swim and a regular run. The most complete in the three disciplines logically won the title.

Regarding the women, Flora Duffy became a legend by becoming the first Bermuda triathlete to win the world title.

They will get back in game their title...

On November 1st 2015 in Maui (Hawaii)

It’s in Zittau that the Spanish, who was defeated in 2013 by the South-African, the Caveman Conrad Stoltz, managed this year to win the world title. It was on August 16th 2014. He realized a solo bike as usually, and won his first world title in cross triathlon.

After winning the European title, the German Katrin Müller became World champion of cross triathlon.

PROGNOSTIC

of the year

TRIhebdo 23

2014 has shown its champions of the year but also its revelations... These names that we didn’t expect... At least not at that level ! Who would have bet

on the victory of Daniela Ryf during the 70.3 World Championships and the 2nd place a few weeks later on the IM in Hawaii? It’s the same during our great contest of prognostics in Hawaii, none of the numerous forecasters (almost a billion) had given the name of Ben Hoffman on the podium. How to mention an almost unknown person among the Ironman finishers?

2014 has allowed us to confirm their ranking among the world elite. The first of them is the Spanish Javier Gomez! A fourth title of wor-ld number 1 couldn’t be enough. Last year, he won the title on Xterra. This year, he tried it on the 70.3... For Gomez, to try means to win! And here he comes with a new world title, on the 70.3 this time !!!

From the German side, where triathlon is very popular, they also had THEIR champions. The first one among them is Sebastian Kienle. He arrived very successfully in Frankfurt, fini-shing in the very closed top 8 of the IM fini-shers. He also beats the record, with the title of European champion, and he wins the dual with the IM World champion in title Frede-

rik Van Lierde... Anyway, he won everything, on the day of his 30th birthday! IM Frankfurt was also the occasion to see how the Sydney Olympian champion Jan Frodeno managed his reconversion on longer distances. A third place in Frankfurt after walking on the mara-thon could only reassure! A few weeks later, he took off podiums: 2nd in the 70.3 and 3rd in Hawaii... Frodenissimo managed his recon-version on longer distances and that’s what makes him a serious pretender to become next year the champion of the year. He will have to confirm, but with his experience, the forecas-ters will place him on the highest step of the podium and he shouldn’t disappoint them!

Disappointments, we had some in 2014... We will remember the deception of Frederik Van Lierde who, despite races in front, couldn’t get as many victories. Professional and worker, you will have to pay attention to him to get the title of athlete of the year 2015.

Frodeno, Gomez, Kienle, Van Lierde, Ryf, Car-frae, Joyce, Steffen... Who will be the interna-tional athlete of the year 2015? Let’s see in a few months after a season 2015 which is ex-pected to be once again an excellent vintage!

Have a happy new year!

?A lot of pretenders but few elected... The prognostics are open to know who will be sacred triathlete of the

year 2015. Verdict in a few months after a season which we hope once again rich in emotions.

Who will be the athlete

Germany’s Michael Raelert returned to the winners’ circle today in commanding style to claim the world’s richest half-Iron dis-

tance prize purse and title of Challenge Bahrain champion. While Denmark’s Helle Frederiksen struck gold in the women’s race.

After surrendering his lead late into the bike to fellow countryman Andreas Dreitz, Raelert clawed it back on the run to record one

of the world’s fastest times over the half distance, Dreitz took second with Australian Tim Reed third.

“I’m overwhelmed – it was a tough race but the finish was sweet,” said Raelert. It was an emotional Frederiksen who claimed her biggest win of the year.

“I’m speechless because as many know I didn’t have the race I wanted at the World Champs so I wanted to make Challenge Bahrain my world championship and the field was actually better,” said Frederiksen.

Frederiksen laid down a brilliant performance in all three legs to runaway with the win from Rachel Joyce (GBR) and Jodie Swallow (GBR) in one of the most exciting women’s races seen.

As expected Dylan McNiece (NZ) led them out of the swim from Pete Jacobs (AUS), Raelert, Eric Watson (AUS), and Tim Don (GBR).Raelert seemed to have pent up energy to burn as he hit the highway with speed and went about putting space between himself and the field. The first casualty of the day was Sebastian Kienle who punctured 30km into the bike.“I’m disappointed as I think I had my best bike legs ever today,” said Kienle. At the 30km mark Australia’s Tim Reed looked strong

in third about 30sec back. The next group was Nils Frommhold, Tim Don (GBR), Luke Bell (AUS), Dylan McNiece (NZ) and Brad Kahlefeldt (AUS).At the 70km mark it was Dreitz who put the hammer down and went to the front extending his lead to 1min 20sec to arrive back into transition first with a 1:57:22 bike split, but would the big German have the run legs to stay away from Raelert?

Reed was next out but had some work to do, but there was no stopping Raelert today he eventually passed Dreitz with a quick word and ran away with the win.Raelert was full of praise for the event and organization of Challenge Bahrain.“Honestly I’ve done triathlon for 20 years and I’ve seen a lot of places and done a lot of races but this is one of a kind. I never thought this would be possible, how we are treated, the hospitality, the people. It’s incredible. This is far above any race I’ve done before – whether it’s world championships or any other race. Thank you so much to Sheikh Nasser, what the Bahrainis have done today is just amazing,” said Raelert.

Jodie Swallow (GBR), Annabel Luxford (AUS), Helle Frederiksen were first out onto the bike but in close proximity were the dangers, Rachel Joyce (GBR), Angela Naeth (CAN) and Jodie Stimpson (GBR).Showing what a big talent she is Frederiksen was the best across all three legs today, with a solid bike which Swallow, Joyce and Luxford lead for a long time but all the women remained in close touch.

Off the bike four girls ran onto the Bahrain International Circuit together, Frederiksen, Luxford, Joyce and Swallow all with their game faces on and a determination to cross the tape first for the USD100,000 first place prize.

Running through the Al Areen Wildlife Park they were shadowed by the wildlife which they all agreed was a great distraction.“On the bike I just focused on the girls in front and

just kept my mind very simple. I could see I had a lot of power on the bike. Jodie stuck with me on the run but it wasn’t frustrating,” said Frederiksen.Frederiksen and Swallow ran shoulder to should before Frederkisen stepped up the pace and the elastic band eventually broke.

“I know she can run hard – but we couldn’t keep that pace, and in the end it’s all about who’s hurting the least,” said Frederiksen. An emotional Frederiksen said this was her World Championship win.Joyce overtook Swallow in the last kilometres of the run to grab second and finish off a very successful year, Swallow hung on for third.

“It was a relief to cross the line! I couldn’t have dreamed of a better way to finish my 2014 season, its crazy.“This setting, what they ‘ve done and how we’ve

The succession of trainings reduces the time of recovery between the sessions. It is important to pay attention to your diet during but also outside your physical activity. Daily, you must eat vegetals (vegetables and fruits), starchy (pasta, rice, semolina, bread, quinoa, lentils...) and proteins (meat, fish, eggs, seafood, vegetal proteins such as soy...). Think about drinking at least 1,5L of water per day and salt your food after training. If you don’t eat dairy products, you must find other sources of calcium: waters rich in calcium, sardines with bones, drinks rich in calcium, almonds... Iso drinks are very often rich in calcium. You must eat vegetables at every meals, they give you minerals, fibers and precious antioxidants. Antioxidants allow you to fight against free radicals. The

fact to use oxygen produces wastes called free radicals. They are more numerous for athletes because there is a strong consumption of oxygen during the effort. They can alter the cells of our body (eventually: heart and neurodegenerative diseases, overtraining for athletes), that’s why we need antioxidants.

Adapt your diet to your training timetable

It is not advised to go to train on an empty stomach because you can suffer from hypoglycemia and use your «muscles» for energy. It is not advised either to go on a stomach too full. Even if the feeling of having eaten enough is reassuring for many athletes, it can cause digestive troubles during your training.

NUTRITION

Do you train before working?

Eat a bowl of SPORDEJ® OVERSTIM.s before your session and take a traditional breakfast after, and insist on hydration (water, tea, coffee). If you don’t have time to take your breakfast after your session, bring at least a protein bar, a fruit and a sweat yogurt to drink at your office. You also need energy to work!

Do you train at lunchtime?

Your breakfast must be complete, with a cereal product, a protein product, a dairy product if you wish, a fruit and a hydration. You can for example eat: tea or coffee + muesli + yogurt + a glass of fruit juice not from concentrate, or tea or coffee + cereal bread + honey + 1 egg + 1 kiwi. In the morning, you can eat a collation of SPORDEJ® OVERSTIM.s if you’re hungry. After training, take your time to eat, for example : vegetables, pasta and tuna salad or chicken and vegetables sandwich, a yogurt and a fruit. Moreover, don’t forget to hydrate enough to foster your recovery.

Can you only train after 7:00pm?

You can have a collation in the afternoon with a cereal product and a fruit. And eat just before your

training a bowl of SPORDEJ® OVERSTIM.s. After your training, have a light and balanced supper : vegetables, carbs, meat or fish, bread, a yogurt, a fruit. Think about making your life easier : meals easy and quick to prepare, meals prepared the day before... Keep drinking, your last urines of the day must be clear.

A good hydration for good trainings

A chronic dehydration related to a lack of hydration during training can cause injuries and tiredness... Your fitness and the quality of your trainings can be altered. It is important to pay attention to your hydration during your bike rides, your running and swimming sessions (because even in the water, there is a hydric loss). Thus, you should get used to drink enough: drink from the beginning of the effort, gulps after gulps and very regularly. I invite you to read the article previously written about the hydration of the triathlete.

A good energy intake during your session

Depending on the duration and the intensity of the sessions, hydration can be replaced by some energetic supplements such as the ANTIOXIDANT GEL in order to optimize the muscle contraction and the FRUIT BAR in order to calm down the hungriness that you can feel on long rides.

A watchful recovery in order to limit tiredness

You can read the previous article about recovery.

Have a good training !

The wheels also represent an advantage. In case of qualification, the full face wheel is forbidden, Simon would make an uncommon choice on Big Island. A 3 or 5 batons wheel from FFWD on the front and the F9R on the back. (For more information :http://www.ffwdwheels.com/products/wheels/road-tubular/f9r-white-dt240/)

Finally, the connoisseurs will recognize the X-Lab Pocket 300 mounted on Simon’s bike. It is model that you can screw, without any scratch, yet the BMC doesn’t have the adapted fixings of this model. « the X-Lab Pocket 300 is fixed thanks to a double-stick tape and one side is in velcro... It is from Perma. I almost manage to lift up my bike by the pocket and it doesn’t unstick. »

For the transmission, Simon also has a very strong opinion :« I stopped focusing on the Di2 which caused me more troubles than advantages. Moreover, I’m fed up with the competition between the component brands. I began with 8 gears, then 9 and 10, and now 11 gears, but what is the point except that of changing the chain every 4000 km? Vision is then «THE» solution to me. Moreover with an aerodynamic back derailleur such as the Métron, I have advantages on every points. »

For the crank set, Simon remains loyal to Rotor, he has chosen the Flow, a very aerodynamic crank set with 180mm crank despite his 180cm tall... A choice which is rather against the current tendency. During the last IM World Championships, we saw many pro’s bikes equipped in 170mm, even the tall Jan Frodeno (3rd) stayed on a traditional 172,5mm.

Why such a choice? « the more the crank is long, the less the saddle is high. So with the same drop, I manage to maximum lower my position on my BMC TM01 which is already a small size. For info, the top of my extensions is at 82,4mm from the ground. Regarding the handlebars, I’m equipped with the Tririg Alpha which is UCI non-approved because it doesn’t respect the ratio. But it is light and very adjustable. »

The future will say if these optimizations will pay or not, in any case Simon has a very interesting approach, he shows that every details count at this level!

We hope to see this beautiful bike in Kona on next October. Good luck Simon !

« My goal is to do a specific bike for Hawaii as for the other Ironman races I will race this year. I really want to optimize the bike part. Hawaii is

a rolling race despite the ups and downs, but the main contender is the wind. »

As he already did in 2009, one of his optimizations is to make his bike a single chain-wheel.

What is the advantage ?

« It is lighter... It represents a significative gain with the small chain-wheel, the derailleur shifter, the front derailleur and the cable. It is 250g lighter. Then, the aerodynamics is even more important. My goal is to limit the turbulences so even if the gain is marginal with a shifter which is generally included in the palm of my hand, there is beneficial effect in the crank set. The air flow is not stopped by the anti-derailment tab versus derailleur-small chain-wheel. »

Kona Wingsby Kiwami

This month, we’ve tried the new Kiwa-

mi Kona Wings, a suit specially stu-

died for aerodynamics on the bike.

MATERIAL TEST

Introduction

Since now two or three years, a new trend has slowly been setting on triathlon cham-pions’ shoulders, especially in long dis-tance triathlon. We’re talking about these

new trisuits, with sleeves. Their goal is clearly to bring aerodynamics on the bike. With the second place in Kona last year of Luke McKenzie, they were more and more numerous this year with long sleeves on Big Island. And this kind of suits should become the standards with Sebastian Kienle’s vic-tory, but also a podium 100% sleeves on the bike!

Kiwami understood it and has proposed from now

on an aerodynamic jersey for the most perfectio-nist triathletes, the KONA wings.

Thermal protection

The Kona Wings dries very quickly and its fabric brings a light protection against the cold. It can be very convenient in some hilly races where the weather can change quickly, and where the down-hills can make you cold. It’s the case in Embrun or Nice. However, before going down, you must also go up, ride sometimes under very hot tempe-ratures, as in Kona for example. The Kona Wings also have an anti-heat effect with its white stitches, by humidifying the fabric we even get a COOL EF-

MATERIAL TEST

FECT. What to make the Kona Wings agreeable in any race situation.

Anti-UV

How many triathletes do we see finishing their Ironman with their shoulders, their back, their arms, completely burnt by the sun? This is so-mething very normal considering the fact that they’ve spent many hours under a very strong sun during the bike and the run? The Kona Wings is anti-UV, and protects from these aggressions be-cause it covers the whole top of your body. As the bike parts are longer, you will prevent your skin from the numerous hours under the sun.

Integral zip

The Kona Wings is equipped with an integral frontal zip, as a jacket. It allows to put it on very quickly. If it’s not very important for a race with

the wetsuit, because you will be able to swim with it, this point is crucial for a race as Hawaii. As the wetsuit is forbidden, and so are the sleeves, you will have to put your aerodynamic cloth on during the transition.

Design

As Kiwami is used to, the suits has an original de-sign, and above all a design which marks. It was the case with the Spider and its very special de-sign, the Kona Wings follows the same way. It is easy to recognize it from at first sight!

Aerodynamics

It is the main asset of this kind of clothes, and the Kona Wings has been designed for that, without any compromise! Why do these trisuits with sleeves are said to be more aerodynamic? Simply because the fabric used offers less resistance to the air than your skin.

TRIhebdo 41

So Kiwami has integrated this idea with this Kona Wings, by covering all your arms until your wrists. In other brands, the sleeves stop at the elbows. With the long sleeves, the Kona Wings reduces even more the resistance to the air. To ensure aerodynamics, the jacket will have to stay still. If it goes up, if it has wrinkles, the gain won’t work. To do so, the Kona Wings is equipped with a large stripping strap on the arms, with si-licone pixels. It ensures a good maintaining, the jacket stays tight and glides on your body, procuring an «eggshell» effect. To finish, Kiwami has simply cut the pockets. For the per-formance, it’s obviously better, because there’s no risk that the wind enters and creates a brake. On long distance, these pockets could lack, and you should find an alternative solution for your nutrition, such as a pocket on your frame for example.

In Action

Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to try this Kona Wings in real conditions. It’s not a racing period in France, and the climate doesn’t allow to realize testings on the road wit this kind of clothes. We couldn’t have been able to encrypt the gain anyway, even id the process of testing with a power meter could have revealed some information... The best is to do a study in a wind tunnel, no doubt that we’ll find a study of this kind for this Kona Wings.

Obviously, we couldn’t get enough of this result! If the aero-

dynamic gains seem to be obvious, the question is about the ventilation. Will will have enough air in this suit, especially on hot and rolling races where this aerodynamic gain could become important? The question is even more judicious with this Kona Wings with long sleeves.

We’ve decided then to try in action this Kiwami jacket, on the roller in order to test the ventilation of this Kona Wings.

The first thing we can say, is that when you put it on, the Kona Wings seems to heat. Yet, it doesn’t disturb the first pedal strokes, even during the ef-fort, we don’t feel any excessive heat. At least not more as usual on the roller. The Kona Wings seems to evacuate the sweat, we are not complete wet under the suit. After a few minutes, we’ve decided to try the COOL EFFECT by slightly humidifying the fabric.

The jacket is close to your skin, the feeling of freshness is immediate, it’s agreeable, a few drops are enough to lower the temperature. It is a good point for a race as Hawaii.

Conclusion

No doubt that this kind of suits will grow in the bike parks on long distance events in 2015. Kiwa-mi stands out by offering the most extreme revo-lution, with long sleeves, for even more gain theo-retically. The Kona Wings costs from 129€.
