THE CHRONICLE—JANUARY 2010 2 SAINT JAMES EPISCOPAL CHURCH

SO LONG, ALLELUIA

Believe it or not, there are only three more Sundays of Epiphany Season left! Lent will be upon us beginning on Ash Wednesday, the seventeenth of Febru-ary. In our common worship in the Church, things change with the coming of Lent. The liturgical color changes to deep violet; the Gloria in excelsis is not sung; music is of a more introspective nature; and the word “Alleluia” is neither said nor sung. Alleluia, the liturgical form of hallelujah, means “praise ye the Lord.” While we praise Our Lord at all times, we do so more somberly during Lent. Thus, we do not use the “A” word, as my junior choir members used to call it. When we began, during Lent, rehearsing music for Easter, the children would always say, “Mr. Massey, we can’t say the ‘A’ word during Lent!” And I would remind them that choir members had a special dispensation to use it when practicing music for Easter. So as we prepare ourselves to enter upon the great Forty Days of Lent, let us be aware that, while we do not sing or say the “A” word, it is still in our hearts as we seek a deeper relationship with Our Lord. So long, Alleluia. See you—and say you—at Easter!

Soli Deo Gloria!

Coffee Hour – If you can’t host coffee hour, would you be willing to donated some packaged cookies? We would keep them on hand for the times when no one has volunteered to host a Sunday. If you can volunteer to host a Sunday, there is usually a sign up sheet on the table at coffee hour. Call Joan

Hemsworth for more information (734-675-8191).

Thank you to everyone who has donated items for Habitat for Humanity

Monroe. A large bag of old sheets, plastic pails, several bags of work gloves, old rags and even a bottle of dish soap was delivered in January to the main office in Monroe. All items were greatly appreciated. Habitat for Humanity Monroe is remodeling homes every week to help people in need of housing so

any items donated are helpful.

Please watch for more info - St James Church again will be volunteering this

summer to this wonderful organization.

On January 16, 2010 we hosted the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen. Audrey Lyden, Millie Miles, Joan

Hemsworth and 5ancy Clark met us in our Chapel parking lot at 8:30 a.m. They helped us cram the sup-plies into the old Mountaineer, already filled up with all the food supplies. Audrey generously volunteered her trunk for the overflow of your amazing donations of coats, hats, gloves, scarves, sweaters, and “Snuggies”. She still had room to fit in the other la-dies! We were met downtown at 9:15 by Tom Coleman,

David & Kate Hartwell, Diane Larkin, as well as all the Rudzeinskys: Dave, Anne, Julie, Emma &

Jenny. AMAZING TEAM!!! Steve & Anne Sulli-

van, and their nephew, from Cornerstone Baptist Church, arrived with the donuts and bread. Our team had his car and both of ours unpacked, and two huge pots full of taco soup were bubbling away before we knew it! 200 donuts were bagged and 20 loaves of bread were turned into 200 peanut butter & jelly sand-wiches, 250 sets of utensils were rolled in napkins and 240 dinner rolls were broken apart by 10:30 am! Madeleine Jones showed up with over 50 ham and cheese Hoagie sandwiches to give away! The taco soup was served with a generous topping of shredded cheddar cheese, a tossed salad, dinner roll, donuts for dessert, and a sandwich to go. Two hundred cold, hungry people really enjoyed that lunch! The total cost, including $45 for Security, was $296.64. The Roseville Cornerstone Baptist Church gave me a check for $260.oo, so the meal only cost St. James $36.64! That was a beautiful thing to do!! On Sat. February 20, 2010: Derek Fowler’s Hockey Team surprised us by offering to do the entire meal and day at Spirit of Hope so we and the Cornerstone Baptists will have that day off. Our next turn to cook at Spirit of Hope will be on March 20. We will meet in our Chapel parking lot at 8:20 a.m. and you will return way before noon. We will be using your generous hamburger donations and a “little yak” for the meal. Sign-ups for the next three months are, as always, on the Outreach Bulletin board.

OUT THERE WITH OUTREACH—JANUARY 2010

Devastatingly sad news…Our friend Bridgette Curtis

from the Roseville Cornerstone Baptist Church lost her 21 year old son on January 15. Please keep dear Bridgette and her family in your prayers. You would know Bridgette as the sweet person who comes in and takes over the kitchen with true efficiency when we are getting ready to leave. Dear Lord, have mercy and grant them your peace… May the love of God shine on you and carry you gently throughout the New Year. May you be given the blessing of truly feeling the comfort of His presence and promise. May you all know that you have our love and thanks, now and always.

January 27, 11 a.m—ECW Outreach Project: We will be making children's dresses from pillow cases and donated material. There will be machine sewing, hand sewing, cutting, and lots of fellowship. Bring scissors and a "brown bag lunch". Coffee, tea and desert will be pro-vided. Call Mary Phillips 675-9313 if you need more information. Feb 8th, Monday, 7 p.m.—Carol Poleski will be our speaker. She is telling the story about Sister Rose, a Dominican nun who has devoted her life to battling anti-Semitism with the Catholic Church. A documentary has been made about this remarkable woman. If you wish to look into this further, you can go online to Sister Rose's Passion. All of these Monday programs are open to any-one and everyone, bring your friends and family. We always think, what can I do; this story shows what one woman can do. Hope to see you there. Feb. 10th at 11 am— Wednesday, is movie day. The film is Peter's Confession. Bring a sandwich and join us for this wonderful DVD. Feb 3rd & 4th, Wednesdays, is coffee and conversation after the 10 am service. The food is provided by our wonderful church friend, Florence. If you miss the ser-vice, come afterwards to sit at the table and share in the conversations. It is surprising what you can learn!

WHOLE BODY HOLINESS

“Love the Lord your God with all your

heart and mind and soul and strength.”

Deuteronomy 6:4 quoted in Mark 12:30.

From this passage we glean that four interwoven parts make up a hu-man being: Heart, Mind, Soul, and Strength. We exist simultaneously and completely in each of these four areas. Neglect any of them and you will be out of balance. Inhabit, honor and use them and you will find keen

balance.

HEART Your heart is your emo-tional center. Become emotionally intelligent. Take time to develop your heart-awareness. Ask yourself, “How do I feel right now?” Let your-self feel that. Become comfortable with emotions. Use and enjoy them. Accept each as a gift, a kind of color in the painting of your life. Then reach out with all your emotions to-ward God. To love is to share the depth of self. Share the depth of your emotions with God. Share the sad-ness with him; Share the joy with him; Share the confusion with him; Share the sadness with him; Seek him in your fear; Seek him in your rejoic-

ing.

MI5D Your mind is your think-ing center. Become mentally intelli-gent. Take time to develop your mind. Think deep thoughts and con-tinue a line of thinking when it be-comes difficult. Read and hear other people’s ideas and seek to understand why they think what they do. Watch documentaries. When you meet ex-perts ask them about their fields. Be-come comfortable with you mind and enjoy your thinking. Then reach out with your mind toward God. Read books of the Bible by first learning background and context through study aids or the internet. Read and seek to understand Jesus’ words. Per-haps begin with Matthew Chapters 5-8, the “Sermon on the Mount”. To love is to share the depth of yourself.

Share the depth of your thinking mind with God. Consider, “Who are you, God?” And hear your mind’s gears turn. Ask, “How can I become more holy?”, then let your mind roam and think it through. Find God working

there through your ideas.

SOUL Your soul is your spiritual center. Become spiritually intelligent. Take time to develop your spirit-awareness. Ask yourself, “What is the spark that makes me me, and what of that spark shared by all people?” You won’t find a physical, mental or emotional answer. The answer is spirit. Look for transcendence, for the truth and reality that underlies everything that is seen or expressed. In your spirit, ask, “What part of me is most likely to be eternal?” Again, the answer will not be clear, but it will be a sense, an intuition, an an-swer in the language of spirit. Be-come fluent in this language. Enjoy it. Live in it and move in it. Use it to love God. To love is to share deeply of yourself. Share your spirit deeply with God. This is what many call

prayer, meditation or centering.

STRE5GTH Your strength is your physical center, your body and all that it is. Take time to develop your body awareness. Do you think you are just your head? You are also your feet. And your feet are you! Inhabit your feet as yourself. So also your hands and stomach, your heart and skin and guts. They are all you. You are them. Don’t ignore any part of your body, and never ever hate a part of yourself. Learn deeply what it is to be a body. Think about the food you eat. Be choosy. It will become you. Put on lotion when your skin is dry. Your skin is your largest organ. Keep your body moving, and employ each part in doing, in moderation, what it was made to do. Enjoy being a body. Then reach out and use your body in loving God. Loving is shar-ing deeply of yourself. Share your

doings with God. When you walk, share your walking. Walk in the presence of God. When you cut, fix, kneel, do them in God. Share your being with God and love him

by your doing.

BEI5G ABSE5T A5D BE-

I5G PRESE5T Most of us are more present in some parts of our-self than others. Maria is more pre-sent in her physicality than her heart, or Bob is more present in his soul than his mind or body. Love the Lord your God with all your Heart and Mind and Soul and

Strength. This is holiness.

- Fr. Phil
