Even the ceremoniesof gaining admission within thesewal]s are emblematical of eventswhich all mankind must sooner orlater experience. They are emblem-atical, at least in some small degree,of your great and last change, ofyour exit from this world to theworldto come. You are undoubtedly awarethat whatever man may acquire onearth, whether wealth, honor, titles,or even his own merits, can neverservehim as a passportto the GrandLodge above, but previous to hisgaining admissionthere,he must findhimself poor and penniless, blind andnaked, dependenton the will andpleasureof the SupremeGrand Mas-ter. lie must be divested of the ragsof Ms own righteousnessand clothedin a garment from on high.

Are you willing to submit to theserules?

THIRD SECTIONI will now proceed to explain to

you what constitutes a lodge, itsform, supports, covering, furniture, ornaments, lights, jewels, how situ-ated,and to whom dedicated.

A lodge consistsof a certainman-her of Free and Accepted Masons, duly assembled, with the Holy Bible, square and compasses, and a charteror warrantempoweringthem to work. Our ancient brethren met on a highhill or in a low vale the better toguard againstthe approachof cowansand eavesdroppersascending or de-scending.

THE FORM OF A LODGE

is an oblongrectangleextendingfromeastto west betweennorth and south, from the earth to the heavensandfrom the surface to the center. It issaid to be thus extensive to denotethe universality of Masonry and that

Ia Mason’s charity should be equallyextensive.

THE SUPPORTS

Masonry may be said to be meta-phorically supportedby three greatpillars, called wisdom, strength andbeauty; becauseit is necessarythatthere should be wisdom to contrive, strength to support, and beauty toadorn all great and importantunder-takings.

They are representedby the threeprincipal officers of the lodge, theWorshipful Master, Seniorand JuniorWardens. The Worshipful Masterrepresentsthe pillar of wisdom, itbeing supposedthat he haswisdom toopen and govern his lodge, set thecraft to work and give them properinstruction. The SeniorWardenrepre-sentsthe pillar of strength, it beinghis duty to assist the WorshipfulMaster in opening and closing his

lodge, pay the craft their wagesifanybe due so that none maygo awaydissatisfied, harmony being thestrength and support of all institu-tions, especially ours. The JuniorWarden represents the pillar ofbeauty, it being his duty to observethesun at meridian height, the beautyand glory of the day.

THE COVERING

of a lodge is the clouded canopy, orstarry-deckedHeaven,where all goodMasonshopeat; last to arrive, by theaid of a ladder, called Jacob’sladder, having three principal rounds, de-nominated faith, hope, and charity;teaching faith in God, hope ui im-mortality, and charity to all man-kind. But the greatestof these ischarity; for faith may be lost insight—hope ends in fruition—butcharity extendsbeyond the grave, tothe boundlessrealms of eternity.

THE FURNITURE

of a lodge is the Holy Bible, square, and compasses. The Bible we dedi-cateto the serviceof God,the squareto the master, and the compassestothe craft.

The Bible we dedicateto the serv-ice of God, becauseit is His ines-timable gift to man, * * * ‘~ ; thesquareto the master, becauseit is theproperMasonic emblem of his office, and by it he is constantly remindedof the duty he owes to thelodge overwhich lie hasbeen cal]ed to preside;and the compassesto the craft, who,by due attention to their use, aretaught to circumscribe their desires, and keep their passions within duebounds with all mankind, but moreespeciallywith our brethrenin Free-masonry.

THE ORNAMENTS

of a lodge are the mosaic pavement,

Page 15: THE · THE OFFICIAL MONITOR MOST WORSHIPFUL GRAND LODGE of ANCIENT FREE and ACCEPThD MASONS of the STATE of ILLINOIS OPENING PRAYER Supreme Ruler of the Universe, we would reverently

26 OFFICIAL MONITORILLINOIS 27

the indented tessel,and the blazingstar.

The mosaic pavement is a repre-sentationof the ground floor of KingSolomon’sTemple; theindentedtessel,of that beautiful tessellatedborder,or skirting, which surroundedit—withthe blazing star in the center. Themosaic pavement is emblematicalofhuman life, checkeredwith good andevil; the indentedtessel which sur-roundsit, of thosemanifold blessingsand comforts which surround us inthis life, and which we hope to enjoyby a faithful reliance on DivineProvidence, which is hieroglyphicallyrepresentedby the blazing star in thecenter.

LIGHTS

A lodge has three lights, situatedeast, west and south.Thereis none inthe north becauseof the situation ofKing Solomon’s Temple, which was

placed so far north of the eclipticthat neither sun nor moon, at merid-ian height, could dart any rays intothe northern part thereof. The north, therefore, we Iti asonically term aplace of darkness.

JEWELS

A lodge has sin jewels; three im-movable and three movable. Theimmovable jewels are the square, level and plumb. The square teachesmorality, the level equality, and theplumb, rectitude of life; and areworn by the three principal officersof the lodge, the Worshipful Master,Senior and Junior Wardens.

The movable jewels are the roughashlar, perfect ashlar and trestleboard.

The rough ashlar is a stone taken

from the quarry in its rude and nat-ural state. The perfect ashlar is astonemadereadyby the handsof the

workmen, to beadjustedby the work-ing tools of the fellow craft. Thetrestle board is for the Master todraw desigus upon.

By the rough ashlar we are re-minded of our rude and imperfectstate by nature; by the perfect ash-lar, of that state of perfection atwhich we hope to arrive by a virtu-ous education, our own endeavors, and the blessing of God; and by thetrestle board we are also remindedthat, as the operativeworkman erectshis temporal building agreeably tothe rules and desigus laid down bythe master on his trestle board, soshould wo, both operativeand spocu-lative, endeavorto erect our spiritualbuilding agreeablyto the rules anddesigus laid down by the SupremeArchitect of the Universe, in thegreatbooks of natureand revelation, which are our spiritual, moral, andMasonic trestle board.

SITUATION

Lodges are situateddue east andwest becauseKing Solomon’s Templewas so situated. King Solomon’sTemple was so situated becauseMoses, after safely conducting thechi]dren of Israel through the RedSea when pursued by Pharaoh andhis hosts had erectedby Divine com-mand,a tabernacle, dedicatedto God,which was placed due east and westto perpetuate the remembrance ofthat mighty east wind by which theirmiraculous deliverance was wroughtand to receive the rays of the risingsun. This tabernacle was an exactmodel for King Solomon’sTemple ofwhich every lodge is a representation. So, all lodges are, or ought to be,situateddue eastand west.

DEDICATION

Lodges in ancient times were dedi-catedto King Solomon * * * in mod-

em times to St. John the Baptist andSt. John theEvangelist—twoeminentChristian patrons of Freemasonry;and since their time there has beenrepresented,in every regular and wellfurnished lodge,a certain pointwitluna circle, emborderedby two perpen-dicular parallel lines, representingSt. John the Baptist and St. Johnthe Evangelist. On the top of thecircle rests the book of Holy Scrip-tures; the point representsan indi-vidual brother, the circle the bound-ary line of his duty. In going roundthis circle we necessarilytouch on thetwo parallel lines, as well as on thebook of Holy Scriptures; and wlulea Mason keeps himse]f circumscribedwithin their precepts,it is impossiblethat he should materially err.

TENETS

The tenetsof a Mason’sprofessionare brotherly love, relief, and truth.

BROTHERLY LOVE

By the exercise of brotherly lovewe are taught to regardthe whole hu-man speciesas one family—the highand low, rich and poor; who, as cre-ated by oneAlmighty Parent, and in-habitants of the same planet, are toaid, support, and protect each other. On this principle, Masonryunitesmenof every country, sect, and opinion, and conciliates true friendship amongthose who might otherwise have re-mainedat a perpetualdistance.

RELIEF

To relieve the distressedis a dutyincumbent on all men; but particu-larly on Masons, who profess to belinked together by an indissolublechain of sincere affection. To soothetheunhappy,to sympathizewith theirmisfortunes, to compassionatetheirmiseries, and to restore peace totheir troubled minds, is the grand

aim we have in view. On this basiswe form our friendshipsandestablishOur connections.

TRUTH

Truth is a divine attribute, and thefoundation of every virtue. To begood and true is the first lessonweare taught in Masonry. On this themewe contemplate, and by its dictatesendeavor to regulate our conduct.Hence, while influenced by this prin-ciple, hypocrisy and deceit are un-known amongus, sincerity and plaindealing distinguish us, and the heartand tongue join in promoting eachother’s welfare and rejoicing in eachother’sprosperity.

My Brother: you * 4 4 *

THE FOUR CARDINAL VIRTUES

TEMPERANCE

PRUDENCE

teachesus to regulateour lives andactions agreeably to the dictates ofreason, and is that habit by which wewisely judge, and prudentially deter-mine, on all things relative to ourpresentas well asto our future happi-ness. This virtue should be the pe-culiar characteristicof every Mason, not only for the government of hisconduct ~vhile in the lodge, but alsowhen abroad in the world. It should

be particularly attended to, in allstrange and mixed companies, neverto let fall the least sigu, token orword, whereby the secrets of Ma-sonry may be unlawfully obtained, ever remembering the solemn obliga-tion you took * * * * which alludesto * * * *

JUSTICE

is that standardor boundaryof right, which enablesus to renderunto everyman his just due, without distinction.Thisvirtue is not only consistentwithDivine and human laws, but is thevery cement and support of civil so-ciety; and, as justicein a greatmeas-ure constitutes the real good man, soshould it betheinvariablepracticeofevery Mason never to deviate fromthe minutest principle thereof, everremembering the solemn, charge youreceived ***** which alludes 4****•

It fur-nishes ns with dwellings, and con-venient sheltersfrom the vicissitudesand inclemenciesof the seasons;andxvhile it displays the effects of hu-man wisdom, as well in the choiceasin the arrangementof the sundryma-tennIs of which an edifice is com-posed,it demonstratesthat a fund ofscienceand industry is implanted inman, tor the best, most salutary, andbeneficentpurposes.

By speculativeMasonry we learnto subdue the passions, act upon thesquare, keep a tongueof good report, maintain seciecy, and practice char-ity. It is so far interwoven withreligion, as to lay us under obliga-tions to pay that rational homagetothe l)eity, which at once constitutesour duty and our happiness. It leadsthe contemplativeto view with rever-ence and admiration the gloriousworks of the creation, and inspireshim with the most exalted ideas ofthe perfection of his Divine Creator.

Our ancient brethren wrought inoperative and speculative both. Wework in speculative only. Theywrought siX days before receivingtheir wages; they did not work onthe seventh because

IN SIX DAYS

Godcreated theheavenand the earth, and rested on the seventhday; the

seventh, therefore, our ancient breth-ren conseciatedas a day of rest fromtheir labors, thereby enjoying fre-quent opportunities to contemplatethe glorious works of the creation, and to adore their great Creator.

PILLARS

The first object to which I will callyour attention ~ * * * two brazenpillars, one on your left hand, theother on your right. The one on theleft hand is called Boaz and denotesstrength; the one on the right iscalled Jachin and denotes establish-ment. Taken together they allude toa promise of God to David that hewould establish his kingdom instrength. They were caston the plainsof Jordan in the claygrounds be-tween Succotli and Zeredathah, whereall the brazen vesselsof King Solo-mon’s Temple werecast by one HiramAmon or Abi, a widow’s son of the

tribe of Naplitali. They were casthollow * * * *

They were eachthirty-five cubits inheight, twelve in circumference andabout four in diameter. They wereadorned by chapiters of five cubitseach, making in all forty cubits high.

These chapiters were ornamentedwith lily-work, net-worls and pome-granateswhich denote Peace,Unityand Plenty. The lily from its purityand the retired situation in which itgrows denotes Peace; the net-workfrom the intimate connection of itsparts denotesUnity, and the pome-granate from the exuberanceof itsseeddenotesPlenty.

These pillars were further adornedby pommels on their tops, represent-ing globes, denoting the universalityof Masonry.Let us passon.

consisting of three, five and sevensteps.

THE NUMBER THREE

alludes to the three degreeswhichevery Master Masons Lodge confers. Also, to the three principal o~cersofthe Lodge, the Worshipful Master,Senior and Junior Wardens.

THE NUMBER FIVE

alludesto the five ordersin architec-ture. By order in architecture ismeant a system of all the members, proportions and ornaments of col-umns and pilasters; or, it is a regu-lar arrangement of the projectingparts of a building, which, unitedwith those of a column, form a beau-tiful, perfect, and complete whole.

OF ITS ANTIQUITY

From the first formation of so-ciety, order in architecturemay betraced. When the rigor of seasons

obliged men to contrive shelter fromthe inclemencies of the weather, welearn that they first planted trees onend, and then laid others across tosupport a covering. The bandswhichconnectedthose treesat top and bottom are said to havegiven rise to theidea of the base and capital of pillars; and from this simple hint originally proceededthe more improvedart of architecture.

The orders are classed thus: theTuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian andComposite.

THE INVENTION OF ORDER

IN ARCHITECTURE

The ancientand original ordersofarchitectare, reveredby Masons, arebut three—theDoric, Ionic, and Cor-inthian, which were invented by theGreeks. To these the Romans haveadded two—the Tuscan, which theymadeplainer thanthe Doric; and the

Composite, which was more ornamen-tal, if not more beautiful, than theCorinthian. The first three ordersalone, however, show invention andparticular character, and essentiallydiffer from each other; the twoothers have nothing bat what is bor-rowed, and differ only accidentally. The Tuscanis theDoric in its earlieststate; and the Compositeis the Cor-inthian, enriched with the Ionic. Tothe Greeks, therefore, and not to theRomans,we are indebted for what isgreat, judicious, and distinct in archi-tecture.

The Number Five further alludesto The Five HumanSenses, which arehearing, seeing, feeling, smelling, andtasting.

The first three, hearing, seeing andfeeling, are most reveredby Masonsbecause* * * * *

THE NUMBER SEVEN

alludes to the sevenliberal arts andscienceswhich are grammar, rhetoric, logic, arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy.

Masonry, however, is more particu-larly founded on geometry, or thefifth science.

Geometry is that science whichtreatsof the powersand propertiesofmagnitudesin general, where length, breadth and thicknessare considered—from a point to a line, from a lineto a superficies, from a superficiestoa solid.

A point is a position without di-mensions.

A line is a figure of one capacity, namely, length.

A superficiesis a figure of two di-mensions,length and breadth.

A solid is a figure of three dimen-sions, length, breadthand thickness.

THE ADVANTAGES OF GEOMETRY

By this sciencethe architect is en-abled to constructhis plans and exe-cute his designs; the general, to ar-range his soldiers; the engineer, tomark out grounds for encampments;the geographer,to give us the dimen-sions of the world, and all thingstherein contained,to delineatethe ex-tent of seas, and specify the divi-sions of empires, kingdoms and prov-inces. By it, also, the astronomerisenabledto make his observations, andto fix the duration of times and sea-sons, years and cycles. In fine, geom-etry is the foundationof architecture, and the root of the mathematics.

GEOMETRY

is the basis on which the superstruc-ture of Masonry is erected.

By geometry we may curiouslytrace nature through her variouswindings to her most concealed re-cesses.By it we discover the power, wisdom, and goodnessof the GrandArtificer of the Universe, and viewwith delight the proportions whichconnectthis vast machine. By it wediscover how the planets move intheir respective orbits, and demon-

strate their various revolutions. Byit we account for the return of sea-sons, and the variety of sceneswhicheach seasondisplays to the discern-ing eye. Numberlessworldsarearoundus—all framed by the same DivineArtist—which roll through the vastexpanse and are conductedby thesame unerring law o nature.

A survey of nature, and the observation of her beautiful proportions, first determinedman to imitate theDivine plan, and study symmetryandorder. This gave rise to societiesandbirth to every useful art. The architect began to design, and the planswhich he laid down, being improvedby time and experience, have producedworks which have been the admiration of every age.

The lapse of time, the ruthlesshand of ignorance, and the devastations of war have laid waste and destroyed many valuable monumentsof

antiquity on which the utmost exer-tions of human geniushad been em-ployed. Even the temple of Solomon,so spaciousand magnificent, and con-structed by so many celebrated ar-tists, escapednot the unsparing rav-agesof barbarousforce. Freemasonry, notwithstanding, has still survived. The attentive ear receives the soundfrom the instructive tongue, and themysteries of Freemasonryare safelylodged in the repository of faithfulbreasts. Tools and implements ofarchitecture— symbols most expres-sive—havebeen selectedby the Fra-ternity to imprint on the memorywise and serious truths; and thus, through a succession of ages, aretransmitted unimpaired the most ex-cellent tenetsof our Institution.0- 0- 0-

PILLARS

Masonry may be said to be sup-ported by three great pillars calledWisdom, Strength and Beauty, bywhich are representedour three an-cient Most Excellent Grand Masters:Solomon, King of Israel; Hiram,King of Tyre; and Hiram Abif. Thepillar of Wisdom represents KingSolomon, whose great wisdom con-trived and executedthat stupendousmonument of architecturewhich im-mortalized his name and proved the

admiration of succeeding genera-tions.

The pillar of Strength representsHiram, King of Tyre, who strength-enedand supportedKing Solomon inthis great and glorious undertaking.

The pillar of Beauty representsHiram Abif, by whose great skill inthe arts and sciences and cunningworkmanship the Temple was beauti-fied and adorned.

TEMPLE

The Temple at Jerusalemwas sup•ported by fourteen hundred fifty-threecolumnsand two thousandninehundred six pilasters, all hewn fromthe finest Parian marble.

There were employed in its erec-tion one hundred fifty-three thousandthree hundred three workmen;namely, three Grand Masters, threethousand three hundred masters oroverseers of the work, eighty thou-

THE THREE STEPS

usually delineatedupon the master’scarpet are emblematicalof the threeprincipal stages of human life, namely, youth, manhood, and age. They also allude to the threedegreesin Freemasonry,EnteredApprentice,Fellow Craft and Master Mason. Inyouth, as entered apprentices, weought industriously to occupy ourminds in the attainment of usefulknowledge; in manhood, as fellowcrafts, we should apply that knowl-edge to the dischargeof our respec-tive duties to God, our neighbor, andourselves, so that in age, as MasterMasons,we may enjoy the happy re-flection consequent on a well-spentlife, and die in the hopeof a gloriousimmortality.

EMBLEMS

M~ BROTHER: I will now call yourattention to nine classes of emblemsor symbolsof Masonry, eight of whichare—thepot of incense, the bee-hive,the book of constitutionsguardedbythe Tyler’s sword, the sword point-ing to a nakedheart, the anchor andark, the forty-seventh problem ofEuclid, the hour-glassand scythe.

THE POT OF INCENSE

is an emblem of a pure heart, whichis always an acceptablesacrifice toDeity; and as this glows with ferventheat, so should our heartscontinuallyglow with gratitude to the greatandbeneficentauthor of Our existenceforthe manifold blessingsand comfortswe enjoy.

THE BEE-HIVE

all createdbeings, from the highestseraphin Heavento thelowest reptileof the dust. It teachesus that as wecame Lnto the world rational and in-telligent beings,so we should ever beindustrious ones; never sitting downcontented while our fellow-creaturesaround us are in want, especiallywhen it is in our power to relievethem without inconvenience to our-selves.

When we take a survey of nature,we view man, in his infancy morehelplessand indigent than the brutecreation; he lies languishingfor days, months, and years, totally incapableof provid[ng sustenancefor himself,of guarding against the attacks ofthe wild beastsof the field, or shelter-ing himself from the inclemenciesofthe weather.

It might have pleased the greatCreator of heavenand earth to havemade man independent; but, as de-

pendence is oneof the strongestbondsof society, mankind were made de-pendenton each other for protectionand security, as they thereby enjoybetter opportunities for fulfill[ng theduties of reciprocal love and friend-shp. Thus was manformed for socialand active life, the noblest part ofthe work of God; and he that will sodemeanhimself as not to beendeavor-ing to add to the common stock ofknowledgeand understand[ngmay bedeemeda drone in the hive of nature,a uselessmember of society, and un-worthy of our protection as Masons.

THE BOOK OF CONSTITUTIONS

GUARDED BY THE TYLER’SSWORD

reminds us that we should be everwatchfuland guardedm our thoughts, words and actions, particularly whenbefore the uninitiated; ever bearing

THE SWORD POINTING TO ANAKED HEART

demonstratesthat justice will sooneror later overtake us; and althoughour thoughts, words, and actionsmaybe hiddenfrom the eyes of man, yetthat

ALL-SEEING EYE

whom the sun, moon and stars obey, and under whose watchful care evencometsperform their stupendousrevo-lutions, pervades the inmost recessesof the human heart, and will rewardus according to our merits.

THE ANCHOR AND ARK

are emblemsof a well-groundedhopeand a ~vell-spent life. They are em-blematical of that Divine Ark whichsafely wafts us over this tempestuous

sea of troubles, and that anchorwhich shall safely moorus in a peace-ful harbor, where the wicked ceasefrom troubling, and the weary shallfind rest.

THE FORTY-SEVENTH PROBLEMOF EUCLID

was an invention of our ancientfriend and brother, the greatPythag-oras, who, in his travels throughAsia, Africa, and Europe, was initi-ated into severalordersof priesthood, andis said to have beenraisedto thesublime degree of Master Mason. This wise philosopher enriched hismind abundantly in a generalknowl-edge of things, more especially ingeometry, or Masonry. On this sub-ject he drew out many problemsandtheorems; and among the most dis-tinguished he erected this, when, inthe joy of his heart, he exclaimed,Eureka! signifying, in the Grecian

THE HOUR-GLASS

We cannot, without astonish-ment, behold the little particleswhich are contained in this machine, how they pass away almost imper-ceptibly, and yet, to our surprise, inthe short spaceof an hour, they areall exhausted. Thus wastesman! To-day he puts forth the tender leavesof hope; tomorrow blossoms, andbearshis blushing honorsthick uponhim; the next day comes a frost, which nips the shoot, and when hethinks his greatnessis still aspiring,he falls, like autumn leaves, to en-rich our mother earth.

THE SCYTHEis an emblem of time, which cuts thebrittle thread of life, and launchesus into eternity. Behold, ‘what havocthe scythe of time makes amongthehumanrace; if, perchance,we escapethe numerousevils incident to child-hood and youth, and, with healthandvigor, arrive at the years of man-hood, yet ‘withal we must soon be cutdown by the all-devouring scythe oftime, and be gathered to the landwhere our fathers have gone be-fore us.
