From the Pastor Lent began on Valentine’s Day. A day of the cele-bration of love complete with greeting cards, flowers, and other gifts offered a tie-in with Jesus’ love for us. The kids who came Ash Wednesday service got a Val-entine card from God to remind them of how much God

loves us all. Easter is on April Fools’ Day. The last time this happened was

1956. The irony of this occurrence is too good to let go. (Please see the article on page 6 which contains thoughts from Miles Townes and me.) Although I’m way past the age of playing April Fools’ jokes on others, I am amenable to being the brunt of such jokes on me.

God’s love is a serious thing, of course, but many American churches have begun using an old Easter custom begun by the ear-ly Greek Christians: “Bright Sunday” or “Holy Humor Sunday.” These celebrations take place on the Sunday after Easter. For cen-turies in all Christian traditions, the week following Easter Sunday was observed by the faithful as “days of joy and laughter with par-ties and picnics to celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection.

We won’t be doing this at Augustana, but our worship is far from gloomy on any given Sunday or other special service. Why? Because of the events of Holy Week...including the parade on Palm Sunday; the Meal, foot-washing, languish of Jesus in Gethsemane, the betrayal kiss, the arrest, and the kangaroo court on Thursday; the Crucifixion on Friday; Jesus’ descent to the place of the dead (Hades) on Saturday; and his triumphant victory over death on Sun-day.

Blessings for the rest of Lent and into Resurrection!

Lent Continues into Holy Week On March 4, the Third Sunday in Lent, we hear

the story of the cleansing of the Temple. On March 11, the Fourth Sunday in Lent, we hear the story of the lifting up of the Son of Man. On March 16, the Fifth Sunday in Lent, Jesus teaches us that a grain of wheat must die in the earth to create a new plant.

Midweek Lenten services continue on March 7, 14, and 21 at 7:00 PM each Wednesday.

Holy Week begins on March 25 on the day we call Palm Sunday/Sunday of the Passion. Although Palm Sunday stood alone in older lectionaries, the decrease in people attending Good Friday worship led to people getting an incomplete story. Those only attending on Sunday, celebrated a parade with Jesus entering Jeru-salem, but missed the Last Supper and Jesus’ arrest on Maundy Thursday and the Crucifixion on Good Fri-day. When they showed up on Easter, they only heard about the Resurrection of Jesus without recalling those two other important components to the story.

On both Maundy Thursday, March 29, and Good Friday, March 30, people have two opportunities to worship: noon and 7:00 PM.

Augustana will celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord: Easter Vigil at 7:00 PM on Saturday, March 31.

Please join us and invite others to worship with us for all these services which lead to the Queen of Festi-vals, the Resurrection of Our Lord: Easter Day.

Resurrection of Our Lord, Easter Day No fooling!! Easter is April 1 this year. The purple veils covering the processional

cross, the “He Is Risen” painting, and three statues in the reredos are gone. We celebrate that death has been defeated by the Crucifixion and Resurrec-tion of Jesus!

The “alleluia,” which has been suppressed dur-ing Lent will once again break forth in our hymns and responses.

Both the 8:00 and 10:15 worship services will be held upstairs in the nave.

To those who have fill the Lenten baskets, please bring them to either service where we will bless the contents for use throughout the city.

Easter breakfast will be served from 8:00-9:45.

Please invite family and friends to join you

Lenten Giving What if, during Lent 2018, we practice serving all people and striving for justice and peace by giving some-thing up...daily or weekly? Here's a possibility. Small plastic baskets are available for people to take home and use. (Please, one basket per family!) As a family, de-cide how often an object will be placed in the basket (at least weekly is suggested). Look for small items to place in the basket and talk about how people might like to receive that item. Per-haps you would choose a toiletry item or an indi-vidually wrapped food item. Pray that God would use these gifts for people who need them, but who are unable to purchase them for them-selves. Bring the baskets (or plastic sacks need-ed to hold more items) to church on Easter morning when they will be blessed. During Easter week, we will sort the items and get them to the appropriate agency for distribution. Fami-lies may participate in this event even if we run out of baskets and you need to use plastic bags. A few baskets remain. Is one of them for your family?

Wish List from the Soup Kitchen Can you help out? The Siouxland Soup Kitchen has need for the following items: onions carrots celery salmon eggs disposable salt and pepper shakers jelly potatoes napkins rubber gloves Gravy Master (browning sauce) hot sauce cheese milk They are also in need of some new mi-crowave ovens be-cause the old ones are nearing the end of their usefulness.

Easter on April 1...No Fooling! (The following is an excerpt from an article in The Christian Century written by Miles Townes as well as thoughts from Pastor Del.)

Preachers often begin their sermons with a joke. These jokes are ornaments, brightening up a somber sermon. They don’t generally serve a deeper purpose.

What will preachers do this Easter—April 1, 2018? Will they make a joke in passing, before dig-ging into the serious stuff? Or will they embrace the opportunity to do something more?

For a long time I believed otherwise, that the Bible was all heavy stuff. I based my ideal of Christian disci-pleship on a very serious Jesus, and I tried to be a very serious Christian. But in college, I happened to read Kurt Vonnegut’s essay “Palm Sunday.” Vonnegut was not a Christian, yet he was invited to preach at an Episcopal church on Palm Sunday, 1980 (alas, March 30). Vonnegut takes on Matthew 26, in which Jesus says, “For you always have the poor with you”—a text that is notoriously problematic for all sorts of Chris-tians.

Vonnegut argues that Jesus is not dismissing Ju-das’ concern for the poor, but rather making a joke at Judas’ expense. To make the joke clearer, Vonnegut paraphrases it: “Judas, don’t worry about it. There will be plenty of poor people left long after I ’m gone.”

This, Vonnegut says, is a “divine black joke, well suited to the occasion. It says everything about hypoc-risy and nothing about the poor. It is a Christian joke, which allows Jesus to remain civil, but to chide Judas about his hypocrisy just the same.”

I found this idea revelatory; it changed how I read the Bible. And not just this passage—when you know what to look for, Jesus jokes all the time. The Bible is full of jokes.

One reason we miss jokes in the Bible is our Puri-tan tradition of disdain for levity, which tends to frame the things Jesus says as pithy comebacks or clever clichés—but not jokes. There is a logic to this: we have no problem being fully human but struggle to be godly, so we should focus on what is godly about Je-sus.

Miles Townes is a writer, teacher, and an elder in the Presbyterian Church USA. As a preacher, I sometimes do begin with a joke, although it’s not a common practice of mine. But celebrat-ing the Resurrection of Jesus on April Fools’ Day is a perfect opportunity to point out God’s sense of humor. I imag-ine a laughing Jesus departing the tomb, because death has been destroyed to make way for eternal life with our Triune God!

Who’s laughing now?
