December 2017 Rep’s Ramblings

So, with this report we put a wrap on another year, 2017!!! Wow it really went fast!!! This was a pretty un-eventful year, no big events. Other than losing a couple more members, who passed away, things went pretty smoothly. We got off to a slow start with weather, but overall had a good summer of riding, at least up to October. My total mileage was way down this year. I just got 4,200 miles this year, and didn’t make it to the In-ternational in California. I’ll try to do better in 2018… We lost a couple members, but also gained a few. With a minor update of the roster, we end the year with 144 mem-bers in Oregon, that I know of. Actually, I just got infor-mation from Rick Foley, Grants Pass Rep that we have two new members and 1 member who is re-joining after an ab-sence. Thanks Rick! We also have another North Coast member re-joining New members: Don Mills and Ken Krois. Returning members: Bill Lindsley, North Cost, and John Koughan, Grants Pass. Celebrating William November 24th Astoria Moose Lodge, about 50 friends and family members gathered to celebrate the life of William Aarnio. It was simple but very nice event. Some shared stories about William, most very amusing. Rallies and cam-pouts won’t be the same without him… Minor Changes The Portland Widow’s Chapter has changed their lunch to 12:30, still on 3rd Tuesday at Applebee’s. Also for winter months, the two Metro South breakfasts at the Wichita Grill in Oregon City, we will be gathering at 8:00 AM instead of 7:00 AM.

Winterizing your Ride

If you haven’t already prepared your bike for the winter, now is a good time to do it, before the weather gets any worse. The typical routine is to make sure it is clean, and a good coat of wax is good. Make sure you add fuel treat-ment if the bike is going to sit for an extended time. The ethanol in the fuel will draw water and contaminate the fuel, if not treated.

Also, it is a good idea to take the weight off the tires, or at least rotate them periodically during the winter. Tires can develop flat spots, when left sitting in one position for sev-eral months. Some also change the oil & filter, to make sure

there is good clean oil in the engine. I like to clean and treat the plastic and vinyl and do a basic inspection to make sure bolts are tight, etc. I also make a check list for Spring, like checking fluid levels, tire pressure, battery, etc. to make the bike is ready for the new riding season. But, now that I think about it, maybe the best way to winterize your bike is to take it to Arizona… Oregon Web Site www.orumci.weebly.com For all newsletter information, or Web postings, please sub-mit to David by the 20th of each month. International Membership Roster The attached form also will serve as a member registration form, which can be used to inform us of any changes in ad-dress, or contact information. I actually encourage every-one to fill out the form, just so I can double check and up-date the membership list. I am updating the Oregon Roster, so I can use all the information I can get. In coordination with Kevin Besel, International Rep., we will be compiling an international roster for distribution, hope-fully sometime in 2018. Christmas To be really honest, I am not a big fan of Christmas. I just don’t like all the commercialism and all the fuss. It’s really my least favorite time of year. But this year, sister Mary Nordby is spending the winter with me, instead of snow-birdin in Arizona. Steve Close is currently in Bouse, Arizona, but will be taking the train up and will be here for Christmas also. So, it seems like Christmas decorations, and all that stuff are the name of the game. My place looks more christmasie than it ever has. Even put some lights up outside. Haven’t done that for 12 years. So tryin to put a lid on the bah-humbug and create a little Christmas Spirit??? Is it workin yet??? Night before Christmas – copied from Facebook Twas the night before Christmas and out in the garage two Goldwings were sitting, a flat 6 montage. But all of the streets were covered with snow…Not a safe place to ride, not a spot on the road. Tenders were plugged in and humming away. Keeping batteries charged on that cold winter day. The chrome was all shined, the paint bright and clean, but the weather out-side, it was nasty and mean. Then out in the yard I heard such a sound, but how can that be, there was no-one around? Then out in the driveway was a throaty purr, the unmistakable sound of a 1500 revving full bore. The rider was plump dressed in leather and black. A long beard of white and a big leather sack. He went to the house and walked right through the door, leaving gifts by the tree and gifts on the floor. A helmet and shield and a new set of lights, to make the ride safe on those warm summer nights.

A new set of pipes to make the bike sing. Chrome license plate cover, a bit of new bling. Then back to his Road Sofa old Biker Clause ran. He fired it up and lifter the stand. And I heard him exclaim as he roared out of sight. Safe riding to all, and to all a good night.

The New Year So, we are about to start another new year. 2018 is just around the corner. My intent for 2018 is to once again ride the circuit visiting our various chapters. In particular I want to make sure I make it to the Chapters I missed this year. Hope to see Ya’ll Out-N-About… A friend of mine once said life is about creating memories. I like that concept. Let’s all go out and create some great memories… That’s it for now. I sign-off for 2017 and wishing everyone:

MERRY CHRISTMAS

and

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

December 2017 Metro South

(Milwaukie & Oregon City) News – Ben Altman November 25: It was a cool 40 degrees this morning, and a bit wet, although not raining. Mary & I headed for the Port-land breakfast at Elmer’s. There were only 6 of us this morning, but the best 6 in town. December 2: Cool and wet, so another cager day to Wichita Grill… We had 12 this morning. We did a 50/50, and by golly, gee I won one. The other went to John Pursley, we only had 9 attending. No new lies initiated. December 3: Mary rode over to the Mile’s with CZ on Sat-urday to go to some Christmas Bazars. So, I drove over Sat-urday morning for the Hood River breakfast. We had 7 attending this morning. I tried to convince CZ that he was stuck with Mary for the week, but he didn’t seem to agree. So, she came back with me. While I make a fuss sometime, Mary is really a pretty good sister. Hope she doesn’t read this. December 9: Well, I missed this one. I went to The Dalles, to help Phil Spor pull the engine out of a donner Stu-debaker. However, this wasn’t just to help a friend. It seems that sister Mary invited 20 of her Seattle gal-friends down for a Christmas Shopping weekend, Yikes. Well, may-be not that many, maybe it was 6 ladies shopping, (3), but before the 8 maids a Milking and 10 Lords a leaping showed up, I thought it best for me to just get out of Dodge… Thanks Phil. December 16: It was time for our Annual Portland Christ-mas lunch at the Chinese Garden. A bit cool at 44 degrees, and a little wet, but not too bad. Never-the-less it was a cager day. We had 17 attending this afternoon. Good food as usual and good friends. 50/50s went to Barb Reed, Sandy Neu-burger, Susie Jenkins, and Mary Nordby. Notice my name was again missing from that list. I did win once this year though. Next up: Portland at Elmer’s…

Grants Pass Greetings to all UMCI Members

It has been a long time that I have written an article for the SparkPlug. I would like to thank Zack for making mention of me and the Grants Pass club in his writing here and in my absence. I have been very busy in my personal life but with the help of the other members here, we have done just about everything I can think of for the club here. I would like to say the Grants Pass/Medford UMCI is doing very well. We have a great group down here. We get together every Saturday and every Wednesday Mornings and weather per-mitting there is a ride. It is motorcycle mecca here and with-in a days ride of here. The most beautiful and varied riding you can imaging.

This month we had 20 in attendance at our monthly meeting, a real good group. I was working on putting on a Christmas Luncheon but I found that we have so many members out of the area for the Holidays and for the winter that I thought was not getting the interest I had hoped for but then Shirley and Jerry Huft offered to put on a luncheon at their house. It turned out very nicely and there was about 15 of us.

When I see how well we are together, how it all works and how good it is riding together I know why I put in the time and effort.

I want to thank you all.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Rick
