The

THIRD DEGREE Published By

Out on a Limb.

W ell, here we are - Fall has arrived and with it the 7th Edition of “The THIRD DEGREE.” This is the issue that many of you have been waiting for...just as many of you have been waiting for Homecoming, news about the

Chapter, the Chapter House and all sorts of details associated with all things Eta. In this issue, we have also gone out on a limb - a somewhat dangerous limb. A financially dangerous limb. We have sent a copy of this issue of our magazine to each and every Brother who has ever been a member of the association. Why? Because we think that the quality of this publication is enough to justify the membership renewals that we need to thrive in this, our fourth year of operations. So, there are a number of you who are reading this and just now learning that you may be receiving this magazine for the last time. If there is a Membership Renewal sheet attached to your copy of this issue, I need you to take a moment - just a moment - and renew your membership. Please don’t wait. And please don’t put this aside I really want to be able to send you the next issue of our magazine. Please do the right thing - and, of course, enjoy the read.

Damn Proud,

Helping Hands We are so very thankful for the efforts of our dedicated land-lords, the Department of Fra-ternity and Sorority Life, who resolved a steam leak that had resulted in the excavation of our basketball court and then turned around and installed a really terrific court, complete with “appropriate Phi Sig brand-ing”, A special word of thanks to Bob Nichols for all of his work in helping us to help him to realize the vision of a “Castle on the Row,” and to Eta Housing Cor-poration President John J. B. Wright, Esq. '82 for his tireless efforts on behalf of the active chapter.

Featured on Page 5 In case you wondered how the Eta Chapter is doing, there was a darn fine write-up on Eta in the Summer 2013 edition of the Signet (at right). Eta even got a photo in the issue. If you are not receiving the Signet, drop us a line via e-mail at [email protected] and we’ll be sure that you are “on the list”.

A “Baker’s Dozen” of New Eta Alumni

online READING IS FUNDAMENTAL It gives us great pleasure to see our active members, like Steven Lopez (at right), read-ing each and every issue of our award-winning magazine, “The THIRD DEGREE.” But, did you know that each and every one of our six previous “sold out” issues are available to be read online? Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus and yes, you can read each and every page that chronicled the resurgence of the Eta Chapter and the Eta Alumni Association. Just visit our website at www.alumni.eta-psk.com and click on the page named “third degree”.

WORTH 1,000 WORDS Over the past three years we have amassed a large number of photos - so many that we have our very own Photo Vault. But, what about you? The original restaurant was opened in 1955 by Tommy Marcos, Sr. The family moved the restaurant to their new location in College Park and it is still owned and operated by Tommy, Jr. and Jimmy. Page 11: The THIRD DEGREE - Fall 2013

Moving into the Fall 2013 Semester, Eta is in the best position to succeed since our rechartering two and half years ago. Recently the Eta brotherhood has improved by leaps and bounds over the past year and even semester. The spring semester was a particularly successful and enjoyable time for the chapter, starting even be-fore the first day of classes. Thirty-two brothers from Eta were contacted by Radford alumnus Rus-sell Lee and Sonco Fencing Company and employed to help setup barricades for the Presidential Inaugu-ration. Working over twenty hours between Sunday evening and until Tuesday morning, the brothers setup barricades along the streets of Pennsylvania Avenue, Constitution Avenue and side streets.

The semester began en-ergized and the energy continued throughout the semester. Eta had our largest single asso-ciate class since rechar-tering, with 17 associ-ates initiated in March of 2013. Many of the newly initiated brothers now hold leadership positions in the chapter including Treasurer, Social Chairman, Rush Chairman and House Manager. Eta can look forward to big things from our younger members. Athletically Eta also exceeded expecta-tions - featuring a third-place finish in the Indoor Soccer A League and a third-place finish with the sisters of Sigma Delta Tau in Greek Week Football. Our A and B Basketball teams combined for three playoff victories. In April the Eta Executive Board and our elder Founding Father members served as the ritual team for the rechartering of the Phi Theta Chapter at Shippensburg University. This was a huge honor and great experience. The semester ended with a Spring Formal at the Outer Banks in North Carolina.

From the President’s Desk (continued)

At this year’s University of Maryland Greek Life Awards ceremony, Eta was a top four finalist for the IFC’s Most Improved Chapter Award - marking vast strides achieved over the past school year. In early August at the 64th National Convention in Palm Springs, California, the Eta actives brought home five special achievement awards out of a total of ten categories. Eta won awards for Chapter Op-erations, Diversity Initiatives, Philanthropy Partici-pation, Scholarship and New Member Education. Moving into the 2013-2014 school year the Eta Chapter has big plans and goals. Our first major plan for the next year is to host a major, profitable philanthropy event to benefit the Special Olympics, Phi Sig’s national Philanthropy.

The 2015 Special Olympics World Games is held in Los Angeles, and our goal is to raise over $2,500.00 to sponsor an athlete for these games. To raise funds and benefit our cause we are planning an event, Ro-deo on the Row. Rodeo on the Row will be a carni-val-style event featuring a mechanical bull, photo booth, carnival games and food. Our event will be scheduled on a Saturday in late September or early October. We would like to encourage any and all alumni to come out. Our other big plans for the fall include a new fund-raising plan by Brother Casellas (’11) designed to sell Maryland tank tops and koozies, and socially

our social chairs have been working hard to arrange socials with Maryland’s finest sorority women. Eta is aiming for a large fall associate class and, with the rush schedule finalized, we’re looking forward to our first in-house miniature golf course and are planning to include our bid dinner with the alumni/active fall cookout. With a full chapter house and plenty of energy, Eta looks forward to having a strong year and damn good semester. John Wright, from Burtonsville, Maryland, majors in Civil Engineering, is serving the second of two semesters as Chapter President beginning in September of 2013.

Brother Brandon Madsen ('14) leads Eta to a Third Place in Greek Week Flag Football over FIJI. Chicks really dig the battle scar.

Eta Brothers (from left to right) Brothers John Wright ('15), Austin Carroll ('14), Steven Lopez ('15), Frank Hacken-burg ('15), Alex Raul ('15) and Lorin Pierson ('13) attend the PSK Regional Conclave in January, this year hosted by the chapter at George Mason University.

An Alumni Visit to the Eta Chapter HouseAn Alumni Visit to the Eta Chapter House

Jim Charanis ‘87 recently visited the Chapter House at #2 Fraternity Row and shared these photos and captions.

Here they are - enjoying the game with a big freaking TV! Definitely more ‘skins fans than Eagles but there were a few. I'm sure they are much happier right now.

They are good fund raisers (I bought three t-shirts fea-turing a cleverly-morphed Terp/Natty Bo dude). And they have pretty competitive soccer and football teams. The IFC started a football league of their own and they are psyched about that.

It's rush week - these guys are pretty sharp. The house is immaculate and the Brothers are cordial, friendly and informative.

Rush Flyer Features Well-Known Art

This semester, Recruitment Chair Austin Carroll wanted to update the primary promotional item used by the Eta Chapter - their Rush Flyer. Carroll requested the assistance of Joe Criscuoli ’82 in revising and updating a flyer that was first used when the chapter moved to #2 Fraternity Row. The previous rush flyer had featured the Chap-ter of the Year Award received from the International Headquar-ters. But this time around Austin wanted an image of our flags in flight. Criscuoli picked-up the image from the cover of the last issue of “The THIRD DEGREE” which was shot by our First Lady, Grace Criscuoli. Not sure if it was the image, or the flyer, but reports from the Chapter say that Rush has been outstanding for the Brothers of the Eta Chapter.

Eli Bergman '16 Civil Engineering Thomas Wootton High School Rockville, MD

As a freshman on a big campus I needed some direction for my four years. It's all good and fun to dabble in many areas but college is a time to grow as a man. Phi Sig gave me that direction and the opportunity to im-prove myself. It was at rush when I found a group of brothers that were all looking for a holistic college experi-ence. Simply from observing the brothers from the outside it was clear that Eta knew how to spend their short time at UMD the right way.

As a brother of Phi Sig I have been given the opportunity to make memories that will last for years to come. Areas where I have grown as a brother, just to name a few: memorizing, bocce playing, courting women, leadership, fire building, and singing. I hope to soon improve my skills in bull riding. From scoring a goal in a fraternity B league soccer game to visiting the Outer Banks for the first time on away weekend, my experience has been quite enriching. Brother Bergman was recently elected to the post of Treasurer of the Eta Chapter and will serve the first of two semesters in this office beginning in September of 2013.

Frank Hackenburg '15 Aerospace Engineering William Floyd High School Mastic, NY

Ever since I was a little kid, my father had told me stories about good times he had enjoyed with his fraternity brothers in college. While I did not initially plan to join Greek life when I went away to college, when some of my friends joined Phi Sigma Kappa during freshman year, the idea of joining became more enticing. Once they brought me around to meet the brothers I became inter-ested in learning more about the fraternity. Once I had learned about Phi Sigma Kappa's cardinal princi-ples of brotherhood, character, and scholarship as well as our frater-nity's overarching goal of creating better men, I was sold on the idea of joining.

Brother Hackenburg was recently selected to serve as the Philanthropy Chairman of the Eta Chapter for the Fall 2013 semester.

As I came into my freshman year I knew I wanted to join Greek Life at some point in my college career. I began my spring semes-ter rushing a few different fraternities, but ultimately decided to wait until my sopho-more year – at least that was what I thought I was going to do. Phi Sigma Kappa had just been chartered and was having a mid-semester rush to try and get a few more men. One of the brothers reached out to me and I went out to a few rush events. I listened to them tell me about how we would have a house on fraternity row and become a top fraternity on campus. I bought into the idea of helping build this fraternity and wanted to be a part of it. I have been Homecoming Chair, Social Chair, and Vice-President and can graduate knowing I had a part in mak-ing the Eta Chapter what it is today.

Brother Keenan was recently selected to serve as the Social Chairman of the Eta Chapter for the Fall 2013 semester.

Report from the 64th Convention

By Austin Carroll ‘14

My name is Austin Carroll, I’m currently a senior and the Rush Chairman for the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. This is only my second year with the fraternity because I did my first two years of college at a community college. I absolutely loved the op-portunity to go to convention and see our brothers from around the U.S. One thing that really struck me was how well rounded we were. We’re not a fra-ternity about athletics and lifting, or academics and studying, or even drinking and women; We’re a fra-ternity about variety and brotherhood. You could tell that everyone at convention lived a life trying to emulate and exemplify our cardinal principals.

For me, there were two main highlights of the trip. The first was hearing the story behind the establishment of ESPN from its founder and CEO Bill Rasmussen. Bill is a great storyteller and had a lot of advice to aspiring en-

trepreneurs like my-self. The second highlight was par-ticipating in the breakout talks spon-sored by the organi-zation Phired-Up. These sessions gave me a lot of great ideas and shifted my idea about recruit-ment from one that was mainly focused on specific recruitment events, like “Meet the Greeks” and oth-ers that make up the traditional rush week, to one that is focused on constant recruiting around campus using different and new tactics to attract the best and the brightest student leaders.

In all, convention was a great time to hang out with all my brothers and learn a great deal about our fra-ternity in a beautiful place. Congratulations to all the alumni on their award for outstanding alumni chapter. I’m excited for the things that Phi Sigs will do in the future. Damn Proud !

Heard rumors indicating that interest in Greek Life is dying out? Well, not at UM. The crowds were huge at “Meet the Greeks” on September 9th (left) and Phi Sig worked the crowds in support of Fall Rush (above).

Nothing starts the Fall Semester off better than a “Chapter Work Day” - and all the Brothers were out in force to spruce up the chapter house in advance of Fall Rush. Under the supervision of Housing Corporation President John Wright, (clockwise from above left) [1] every detail is ad-dressed, even down to covering the bulletin boards with fabric. [2] Gotta slap a coat of paint on that wooden bench built by a previous associ-ate class as their gift to the chapter. [3] It is just amazing that the enthusiasm for weeding and planting the flower beds is exactly the same in College Park as it is at home. [4] With all the engineering majors in the chapter, making wooden trim for the bulletin boards is an easy task.

Steve Cooper Bowie, Maryland Eta Class of 1979

I have been married for 27 years to Una, an AGD (1979), and have three daughters Megan (25), Katie (23), and Patricia (21). Megan is a social worker in Baltimore, Katie is starting graduate school in the fall at Trinity College, Dublin, and Patricia is a senior at UMBC. Patricia is following in my footsteps as she is the President of her sorority.

My undergraduate degree is in U.S. History and I have a M.A. in History and a M.L.S. I have worked in the archives, records, and information management field for 30 years and currently am the Assistant Records Program Manager at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, DC. Previously, I worked at the National Archives for 23 years and the Maryland State Archives for 7 years.

The THIRD DEGREE: What first compelled you to become a member of Phi Sigma Kappa? Steve Cooper: My older brother, Sherod, was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa; and I knew many of the brothers so I felt right at home at Phi Sig from the very beginning. I joined with one of my friends from high school, Mike Miller ’79. Another of our friends, David Williams, joined Phi Sigma Kappa at Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey. TTD: What advice would you want to share with our current undergraduate members? Steve Cooper: Don’t be like I was….any time someone wanted to go out I was always ready to go. I had a great time at Phi Sig, although my grades weren’t as good as they should have been. Fortunately, they were good enough to get into graduate school. When my daughters started col-lege I told them to have fun but grades come first. I think that’s pretty good advice for any un-dergraduate. When I think about when I was in col-lege, it seems that every night was party night. Monday after meeting we went to the Vous, except for the times when we actually had the meeting at the Varsity Grille; Tuesday night was study night; Weds night was “dessert” night; Thursday was definitely party night ending with the Sigma Nu Vous; and then it was the weekend. TTD: What things did you learn as a member of Eta Chapter that have served you well in your life? Steve Cooper: Being involved in Phi Sig and serv-ing as an officer and President started me on a life of being involved in different organizations includ-ing church, PTA (President), and pool club (President for six years). I look forward to getting more involved in the Eta Alumni Association and seeing everyone at homecoming this year.

TTD: In his Alumni Profile in the 4th Issue of this magazine, Bruce Gordon (‘79) indicated that one of his most favorite memories of life as a member of Eta Chapter was you wearing the same bathrobe everyday for a year. Care to comment? Steve Cooper: Bruce – can you believe that Una threw away that blue bathrobe even before we got married? If I still had it I would have donated it to the chapter to place on display in the old TV room.

Eta Brings Home Awards from Convention

Last year we revealed that the Eta Chapter had received three prestigious awards from the International Headquarters of Phi Sigma Kappa. Brother Chris McBeth was recognized as Chapter Adviser of the Year, the Eta Chapter was named Chapter of the Year, and the Eta Alumni Association completed this Triple Crown with an Alumni Club of the Year award. Well, this year Eta has done it again - bringing home some bling from the Convention.

Top Left - The Active Chapter received five of the President’s Special Achievement Awards for Chapter Operations, Diversity Initiatives, Philanthropy Participation, Scholarship and New Member Education. Bottom Left - As you probably saw on the cover of this issue, your Eta Alumni Association was once again recognized as an Alumni Club of the Year. This is the second time in as many years that your association has been selected for this award. This Page - Joe Criscuoli ‘82 received the Founders Award. Established in 1952, the Founder's Award features a silver medal, mounted on a wooden base, bearing the official crest and the names of the Founding Fathers. It is presented to an alumnus of the Fraternity who has distinguished himself with outstanding service to his Fraternity, or chosen profession. The award was presented to Criscuoli by the Grand Council. Congratulations to all on their tireless efforts on behalf of the fraternity, and a tremendous thank-you to all our alumni members for your invaluable support.

A s the icy fingers of old man winter slowly re-lease their grip, Spring takes its first breaths of

nice weather and we all start to long for warm days. St. Patty's Day, Passover and Easter, Spring Break, each let us feel that the sunny days of Spring are finally here. Now, Spring will also be officially de-clared each year with Eta Chapter's Annual Open House event. This year confirmed this declara-tion. On April 25th, Eta Chapter held its Second Annual Open House. The day was beautiful - sunny, blue skies, temperature a lovely 72 de-grees. This year's Open House was held in conjunc-tion with MARY-LAND DAY, the University's an-nual campus-wide open house which draws tens of thousands of alumni and guests. Maryland Day and the great weather cooperated in giv-ing Eta a great turn out. Many parents and alumni showed up

And a Special VIP Guest. Michael Carey (center), Executive Vice President of Phi Sigma Kappa, attended our 2013 Open House, shown with 4 of the 5 members of the “most dangerous Alumni Association in the country” - (from left to right) Secretary Todd B. to tour the House, meet the brothers and enjoy a ter-rific day. The Open House has become an especially mean-ingful event for the undergraduates who are new to the fraternity or in the process of Associating, giv-ing them the opportunity to introduce their parents to Maryland’s oldest, and finest, fraternity. You can tell which of the attendees are the new parents, as they first walk up to the house, by the look of appre-hension on their faces. Being greeted by their son's Brothers and the many alumni present, and upon seeing the pride of the Brothers in our Chapter House, their skeptical looks are soon replaced with ones of smiles and laughter. I had to smile when I heard one parent, while sitting on a bench with her son, say; "I understand now why you wanted to join this fraternity. I would like to live here." Many par-ents of upper classmen returned for their second Open House event. Holding the Open House on Maryland Day, provided an opportunity for their son to also show off the University. Many enjoyed returning to the House to talk with other parents and alumni that they had met the year before.

The undergraduate actives had the Chapter House looking like the Ritz. Red ribbons and flowers deco-rated the columns. A video presentation showing the Chapter's events and activities over the past year ran in the basement on their 60" television. Alumni en-joyed lounging in the Living Room on the leather

Making it Happen. Bob Nichols, Associate Director of the Department of Fraternity & Sorority Life, Michael Carey, Ex-ecutive Vice President of Phi Sigma Kappa, and John J. B. Wright, President of the Eta Housing Corporation, have done much to bring Phi Sigma Kappa to #2 Fraternity Row.

couches while they watched a video made from old 16mm movies, taken between 1940 and 1960, of the Brothers and Chapter during those decades on the 83" television (great for those Alumni whose sight is not quite as good as it was when they lived in the Chapter House). Everyone who attended enjoyed

the tasty buffet laid out in the basement dining room. Shrimp, chicken wings of many flavors and six-foot-subs satisfied all. Michael Carey, the Executive Vice President for Phi Sigma Kappa, flew in from our International Head-quarters in Indianapolis, Indiana to attend Eta's Open House. He was impressed both with the qual-ity and appearance of the Chapter House as well as the quality of the Brothers of Eta Chapter. The high-light of the event was the unveiling of the Six Col-umns Contributor Plaque. Over the past couple of years, many of Eta's Alumni, and their families, have unselfishly stepped forward to make contribu-tions to the fund which made it possible for Eta Chapter to obtain, furnish and maintain the new Chapter House. The Six Columns Plaque, predomi-nately displayed in the Chapter's Study Room above the ten foot cherry wood conference table, lists the names of all the contributors who made it possible to occupy the Chapter House. Named for the six white columns which stand at the front entrance to the House, the plaque dedicates each column to a

decade and lists the names of Alumni from that dec-ade who have contributed. The amazing weather allowed many to sit on the front porch and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Row. Brothers, Alumni and parents enjoyed playing a game or two of "cornhole" on the front lawn. The Study Room was soon transformed into a scene from "The Big Chill" as many Alumni from the Seventies gathered to reminisce and catch up with each other, including Bruce Gordon, Matt Smalley, Gary Kull and Gene Atwell. (Well maybe it was more like a scene from "Animal House" meets "The Bucket List".) Pictures of the event can be viewed at your Alumni Association sponsored Photo Vault at http://etaalumnivault.smugmug.com . I want to thank all the Parents and Alumni that joined us for this cele-bration and hope that many more of you will plan to be with us next year. Mark the date, Eta Chapter Open House: last Saturday of April, same day as MARYLAND DAY, April 26, 2014. We promise a beautiful and warm sunny day.

Alumni Notes “I’m Hatman”? Brother Richard E. Mellinger ‘62 writes, “I'm living in the San Francisco Bay Area near my (extended) family. I've been mar-ried four times; just can't seem to get it right. I get back to Mary-land now and then and still con-sider it home. I've got the Mary-land State flag on my bedroom wall and root for the O's and Ra-vens. (Can't root too openly for the Ravens since they beat the 49'ers in the Super Bowl.) I'm still working as a project or grants manager. Retirement does not appeal to me. As per the picture, my nickname is "Hatman" and, under the influence of California, have cool tattoos on both arms and pierced ears. Stay strong, Brothers. - Dick Mellinger”

For #7 Residents... Bob Whiteley '56 has a special message for “Eta Alum’s that were in the #7 Home from ‘54-’56. Those were three of the most interesting years of my life. I lived in the house one semester with Jay Reid, Bob Hall and Charlie Fruend. I talked to Charlie recently – Bob Hall left us and I’ve lost track of Jay Reid. I was in the fraternity when big-BAD Jim Starnes was Chapter Presi-dent and I joined the year after Jim pulled off the stealing of the goat from the Naval Academy. From the years I was there, I only keep in touch with Bob Cooke, and once in a while I run into George Harrison and I recently saw Don Horner and have tried to talk them into joining us as alum’s – but no luck so far. The active Alum’s should feel proud how they have gotten the ETA chapter back in business. I sold my business in 2002 but kept my Corporation and still am em-ployed by the Corporation and trading the grains and the stock market – which I am out of since I got a sell signal in June. The economy on the Eastern Shore is still in the dumps – but I have a daughter (employed by Dell) in Raleigh, NC and their economy is booming. Me? My health is fine – and at my age everything else is secondary. I look forward to a

visit to the new Chapter and hope to see all the bright new men sometime in the near future. Kind regards to all.”

Legacies Abound Warren Wimer ‘62 writes, “After years of hearing about Phi Sig experiences and the lasting friendships created, not rushing was not an option for two grand-sons attending the University of Arizona. Sadly, for our grand-sons there is no Phi Sig presence in Tucson, so the Wimer Greek tradition lives on under the ban-ner of Sigma Chi. As a positive, from more than 2,600 miles dis-tant, the Greek tradition of Eta lives on, albeit in an attenuated way. As for Nancy and I, life continues to be good here on Lido Isle in Newport Beach. Having been mostly (about 80% that is) retired now for 5 years, we finally have plenty of time to ski, play tennis, kayak, party, road trip and generally enjoy. We’ll miss homecoming as we will be in Cancun, but are hoping for a Maryland vs. Arizona matchup in March Madness, which would be a fun conflict as our older grandson is a Wildcat player. Greetings to all, and par-ticularly the ‘50s generation.” Warren Wimer, ’62.

Jim seems to be gesturing to the photographer that the photo should be preserved for history.

Jim Charanis ‘87 and Robert (BobbyT) Troyano ‘86 were recently reunited. Troyano read on Facebook that Charanis was in Hilton Head and emailed Charanis. They got together, says Charanis, “for the first time in probably 26 years.”

Page 38: The THIRD DEGREE - Fall 2013

Stewart Carlyle Bushong , a.k.a. Bush, has had an exceptional ca-reer following his graduation with a degree in physics as a member of the class of 1958. He married Bettie Stephens, Delta Gamma, and his first job was with the USPHS allowing him to escape the Viet Nam War. His assign-ment was to the National Reactor Testing Station just outside of Idaho Falls, Idaho. There he as-sisted in the meltdown of the SL-1 nuclear reactor in 1960. He quickly took a better paying job at the Westinghouse Testing Reactor outside of Pittsburgh and then participated in melting down that reactor in 1964! Instead of following Westinghouse to Jack-ass Flats, Nevada, Bush pleaded with his advisor at the University of Pittsburg and landed a Teach-ing Assistant job. When he gradu-ated with his doctorate in medical physics in 1967 he joined the fac-ulty of the Baylor College of

Medicine (BCM) where he ex-celled academically in teaching, re-search, and publica-tion. Bush has au-thored over 150 sci-entific papers, 43 textbooks, and trained 356 resident radiologists and 1748 radiologic technologists. Bush continues on the fac-ulty at BCM but principally as a teaching professor and lecturer. We (the editors of The THIRD DEGREE) discovered a photo-graph of Bush (below) and asked him to comment. Apparently when he performs as a guest lec-turer he does so in hat, cap, wig, or costume depending on the sub-ject of the lecture. And each of the pieces in this montage repre-sents an area or country where Bush has lectured. One of his textbooks, “Radiologic Science

for Technologists” is the leading such textbook and has been translated into five other languages, therein lies the reason for the invitations to attend and/or speak ar many international conferences. We like the photo in the mid-dle with the Hindu turban. Bush tells us that his favorite is the

black wig in the upper right cor-ner. He stole that from our de-parted brother, Stanley Hames. Bush reports that Hames wore that wig because he was slick bald! Terry H. Chapman ’62 sent us a story about his good friend, Bob Lambert, who died last June. It portrays in part some of his ideas of what brotherhood and friend-ship are.

This morning June 24th, 2013, on the Swift River in western MA I had a series of unusual experi-ences; one very good, some good, and one very bad. I was fishing for the first time using the fly rod of a friend of mine who had passed away last year. Bob and I had shared the love of fishing and a quest for meaning in our lives. On the second cast I hooked and then brought to net a beautiful Rainbow trout. That's very good! Bob was certainly smiling now. Having accomplished my day's mission but not feeling done, I ventured forth along the path to-ward the famous Y pool and as I rounded a thickly wooded section of the path, I saw a Black Bear of

Alumni Notes (cont. from Page 33)

36 Fall 2013 The THIRD DEGREE

Page 39: The THIRD DEGREE - Fall 2013

a reasonably large size sauntering across the path and into the woods. Into the woods and hope-fully away from me is a good thing.

I made an about face and started toward my car for an early lunch when a large coal black squirrel ran in front of me; paused and looked at me as if to say, "So, a little timid are we now?" and then scampered into the woods, per-haps to join the bear at some spe-cial animal meeting? That's also good!

And the bad? I got to my car and wanting to fish some more, drove to the Cady Lane stretch of the Swift nearby and as I pulled to a stop, I looked to my right and saw my fly rod bending precariously; pushed the down window button and snap! Bob's rod, now mine, was broken in two. That's a very bad thing!

I felt bad as I drove away, unable to focus on the good things of the morning and wondered if I felt bad about the rod or because both the rod and Bob were not in ser-vice anymore? The rod I can fix.

Cecil Given ’68 writes, “We all lost touch with Brother Greg Barber ‘68. But I recently saw his name on the list of “non-members” and “Googled” him in Northport, NY, thinking that was an outdated address… and I found a website for his company www.gregbarberco.com. I checked it out, saw his picture…and it was actually Greg, just about 45 years older. I also noticed a link to another website on Greg’s website www.neilswheelsny.com and I opened it to read an amazing story about Greg and his son and what they have gone through dur-ing the past twenty-five years.

Greg called me and told me the story ----In the early 90’s Neil Barber, Greg’s son, was an all- county la-crosse player

at Manhasset High School , one of the best lacrosse programs in the nation (a few Phi Kap’s that we knew well from our era that played for Maryland’s National Champions were from Manhas-set…Jack Heim, Steve LaVaute, and Buddy DeHoust). Neil was destined for a college scholarship, but he was going through depres-sion problems, and was losing some of his athletic skills and motivation. Greg and his wife felt they were doing something wrong, or perhaps it was just age related, and maybe just Manhas-set peer pressure. It didn’t get any better, just much, much worse. I encourage you to read the story about Neil ---running away, being homeless, and what finally was diagnosed as schizophrenia, a mental illness that needs constant treatment, that led to Greg and Neil’s old lacrosse coach to start Neil’s Wheels. It’s like a story that you might see broadcast on “60 MINUTES”, and it deals with a problem that may have entered the life of someone in your family. Greg is excited to be back in the loop with his Brothers and would

love to hear from anyone that has time to connect. He wants all of us to know about what happened to his family . And that if you have a similar issue it can im-prove. When you read Greg’s story you will see that he has helped so very many people over the years understand what they are living with and how they can handle it.

A Brother Who Shall Remain Anonymous sent this photo (at right)to us with this cap-tion - “In all my years of having acted as the Eta House Manager, and with all the vast im-provements to com-puters and electron-ics, it warms my heart to know that, when the Summer is over and the Fall semester is about to begin, the repair lists are being compiled the same way I did them oh so many years ago.

Under the Eta Alumni Association's "Robert G. "Bob" Pemberton, H'58, Rings & Pins Program", Phi Sigma Kappa fra-ternity pins, donated by alumni of the Eta Chapter, are awarded to Chapter members for outstanding performance.

Since the initial awards to all Eta Colony officers on March 12, 2011, each incoming Chapter President has been presented a pin with guard and the president's gavel dan-gle. Each donated pin set is accompanied by a biographical sketch prepared by the alumnus donor of the pin.

New pin donations are essential and very much appreciated. If you have any ques-tions, please feel free to contact Wayne H. Bethards, ‘59, First Vice President, by phone at 410-730-2173 or via email at [email protected]

A pearl pin donated by Lance Billingsley, H'61 was presented by John J. B. Wright, H'82 to his son, John L. P. Wright, H'15, upon his installation as President of the Eta Chapter.

Robert Richard Thacker Eta Class of 1965 September 29, 1943 - December 9, 2012 Robert R. Thacker – Robert Richard (Dick) Thacker, age 69, of Fairfax, Virginia passed suddenly on December 9, 2012, at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. A native of Norristown, Pennsylvania; Dick graduated from Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, and from the University of Maryland with a B.S. in Zoology. Dick retired from Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) in April 2011 as the Director of Environmental Programs, Mission IT, with forty years of experience in planning and directing environmental programs. For thirty years Dick supported EPA's Contract Laboratory Program's (CLP's) Sample Management Office and was its Program Manager for twenty-three years. The CLP provides data of known and documented quality to support Superfund data users in their cleanup of uncontrolled hazardous waste sites and other environmental hazards across the country. Dick was an avid runner, hiker and enjoyed kayaking for many years. He competed in numerous10K races as well as ran in both the Marine Corp and Honolulu Marathons. He hiked and kayaked locally, in Shenandoah, Hawaii, Key West, and most recently, Maine. He especially liked hiking off the trail, looking for native plants, and always looking for animals and birds. Dick was actively involved in his son Christopher's Boy Scout Troop, serving on committees and participating in their many camping and hiking trips as well as their Sea Base Florida adventure. He loved to cook - especially for family and friends. Thanksgiving dinner was always a favorite; fried turkeys, numerous side dishes, and too many pies. He is survived by his wife of thirty-three years, Roberta Nantier Thacker; his son, Christopher Robert Thacker; his sisters Liesa Finkbiner, Claire Reagan, Barbara Seuffert and Arlene Reagan; his aunt, Sandra Updegrove Lawler; and fifteen nieces and nephews.

W e have been blessed these past three years to have had the opportunity to count amongst the members of our Executive Committee Brothers

Wayne H. Bethards ‘59 and Peter J. Della-Croce ‘99. Unfortunately, by the time that the next issue of our award-winning magazine lands in your mailbox, Wayne and Peter will have left their positions of leadership within our association. We will miss them dearly. We will remember their dedication to our mission, their commitment to the motto “There is no ’I’ in ’team’”, their rejection of politics and gamesmanship, and the way the five of us forged a strong working harmony in so short a period of time. Each and every time we take a vote we will miss the jokes, catcalls, interruptions, side-ways glances and speeches. Or is it that they will miss those things? It was, in no small part, with these Brothers in mind that the Eta Alumni Association trademarked the tagline “The Most Dangerous Alumni Executive Committee in the Country”. Our meetings, referred to as “The Circus” have always featured peals of laughter - whether a result of Peter’s deadpan reac-tions to news items, or Wayne’s sly and knowing observations.

As volunteers - those who have stepped forward to recruit, fundraise, and spread the word that our Brotherhood is not “just a college thing” but, rather, that we are Brothers for life - these two Brothers have very few equals. They have the distinction of having played a key role in the re-chartering of the Eta Chapter, in building an alumni association twice recognized for excellence by our International Headquarters and the largest Phi Sig alumni asso-ciation in the nation, and for being elevated by our Grand President to the Fourth Degree. Those they leave behind will have to pick up the slack, and it is readily acknowledged that the rope burns we will receive will be plenty painful. In the coming days and weeks we hope you will reach out to Wayne and Peter and thank them for their service to our association, for stepping forward when asked to revitalize our association, and for being excellent ambassadors for our Chapter and our Fraternity. Damn Proud,

The Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa

With your generous gift to the Six Columns Fund:

...you help to create a legacy of having helped to put the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa back onto Fraternity Row.

...you help to create a “Castle on the Row,” to create a home you’ll be proud to visit, and an asset that will enable the active chapter to compete for the top new recruits at the University of Maryland.

...you help to create a chapter house where actives, alumni, parents and prospective members walk through the “Six Columns” in front of #2 Fraternity Row and experience the legacy of Maryland’s oldest, and finest, fraternity.

It’s time to do more than read about our new chapter house...it’s time to become a part of it. And it’s a whole lot easier than piloting the Space Shuttle.
