The following pages of this bulletin provide information about our services this morning, including the text of our assigned readings and the music (at our 10:15 service), as well as news about upcoming events. Please take this bulletin with you to refer to in the coming days.

The small candle on the altar is a Candle for Peace. A practice begun in Russia, peace candles are being passed from church to church around the world. (Ours is from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in The Dalles, Oregon.) The candles and the story of the peace candle are available at the back of the church.

We hope guests and visitors will take a peace candle to their home church.

Opening Acclamation and Collect for Purity

The people standing (as they are able), the Celebrant says

Blessed are you, holy and living One. People You come to your people and set them free.

The Celebrant may say

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no

secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect of the Day

The Celebrant bids the assigned collect, saying these or some other words of introduction

God be with you. People And also with you. Priest Let us pray.

Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and,

because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Isaiah 35:1-10

A lector reads the first reading from Scripture, first saying

A Reading from the Book of the prophet Isaiah.

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and

blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees.

Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.”

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes.

A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God’s people; no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

7

At the conclusion of the reading, the lector says

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm – Psalm 146:4-9

A reader leads the congregation in saying the Psalm at the 8 AM service.

At the 10:15 service, the People sing the Psalm following what is known as “Simplified Anglican Chant.” Each half-verse of the Psalm is sung on the reciting note up to the last accented syllable (in bold print below). If there are an odd number of verses, the last verse repeats the final two bars.

4 Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help! *

whose hope is in the LORD their God;

5 Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; * who keeps his promise for ever;

6 Who gives justice to those who are oppressed, * and food to those who hunger.

7 The LORD sets the prisoners free; the LORD opens the eyes of the blind; * the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down;

8 The LORD loves the righteous; the LORD cares for the stranger; * he sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked.

9 The LORD shall reign for ever, * your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah!

Second Reading – James 5-7-10

A lector reads the second reading from Scripture, first saying

A Reading from the Letter of James.

Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits

for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.

8

Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

At the conclusion of the reading, the lector says

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

Gospel Hymn (10:15 only) “O come, O come, Emmanuel” Hymnal 56, vv. 5-6

Gospel – Matthew 11:2-11

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Mathew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his

disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.”

As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written,

‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’

“Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon – The Rev. Jedediah Holdorph

A period of silence will be observed for reflection after the sermon.

An Affirmation of Faith – all stand, as able

The People say an Affirmation of Faith, adapted from Laughing Bird Liturgical Resources.

We believe in God, creator and lover of the earth, origin and destiny of us all.

We believe in Jesus the Christ - God coming to us in the fragile promise of a baby yet unborn –

who emerges as the herald of hope, God's laughter in the face of despair.

Plunged into death and hell, he broke free the captives,

and is leading the way to the land of promise, where justice and peace will flourish.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, who implants the seed of truth,

brings us to birth as the body of Christ, and empowers us to confront and transform all that is corrupt, degrading and deceitful.

We believe in the coming reign of God. Announced by the Baptist,

it has drawn near to us in Jesus, and will be consummated in the glorious marriage of earth and heaven, when all who have passed through the world's deep sorrow will be gathered into the joyous fulfillment of God's desire.

As we work for the coming of that day, let us pray, Come, Lord Jesus, Come!

The Prayers of the People – from New Song Episcopal Church, Coralville, Iowa

The Celebrant introduces the Prayers, saying the following or other words of introduction.

God of wonder and awe, as we watch for your signs in sun, moon and stars, we pray to you saying, “Stay with us while we wait.”

The Leader of the Prayers continues

For the church that watches and waits for you; for those who seek, or lead or follow, that the path be made straight for your coming.

The people add their prayers for the church, silently or aloud.

God who has come and is coming again, People Stay with us while we wait.

For our nation and for the welfare of the whole world, that a spirit of mutual respect may inform and instruct our leaders, and that people everywhere might hold whatever is true and honorable, just or pure or pleasing in our hearts, joyfully living your vision for all of creation.

The people add prayers of intercession and thanksgiving for the world, silently or aloud.

God who has come and is coming again, People Stay with us while we wait.

For this community, that our love may grow with knowledge and insight as we discern the gifts and the challenges around us.

The people add their prayers for the local community, silently or aloud.

God who has come and is coming again, People Stay with us while we wait.

For all who suffer and for the needs and concerns, hopes and thanksgivings of the community gathered here this day.

The people add their prayers for those who suffer, silently or aloud.

God who has come and is coming again, People Stay with us while we wait.

For those who have died. For the fullness of their joy in you, and their place in the company of heaven, that they too, may be present while we wait.

Page 11: The Third Sunday of Advent - Trinity Episcopal Churchtrinitybend.org/wp-content/uploads/2016-12-11... · 11/12/2016  · The Psalm – Psalm 146:4-9 A reader leads the congregation

11

The people add their prayers for those who have died, silently or aloud.

God who has come and is coming again, People Light our way to you.

The Celebrant concludes with the following (or another suitable) collect.

Creator God, we praise you for your love in coming to us. Give us grace to accept the Christ who comes in your name, and the courage to be Christ for others. Amen.

The Exchange of the Peace

The Celebrant says to the people

Blessed be Christ the Prince of Peace People who breaks down the walls that divide.

Celebrant The peace of God be always with you. People Praise to Christ who unites us in peace.

Please greet those sitting beside and in the rows in front of and/or behind you.

Birthday/Anniversary Blessings (along with other special prayers/announcements)

Those with birthdays and/or anniversaries to celebrate are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. The People and Celebrant say the appropriate prayer together.

For birthdays: Watch over your children (child), O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of their lives (life), through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For anniversaries: O gracious and everliving God, look mercifully on your servants. Grant them your blessing, and assist them with your grace, that with true fidelity and steadfast love they may honor and keep their promises and vows; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

If other members of the congregation wish, they may ask for additional prayers and blessings.

A small “treasure chest” is placed on the chancel rail near the flowers. As members come forward for blessing, they may choose to place a thank offering in the chest. These gifts will be used to support outreach efforts for others in our community.

Offertory Hymn Prepare Your Hearts Jacob Handl

Representatives of the congregation bring the people’s offerings of bread and wine to the deacon.

While the table is prepared, ushers will receive offerings as music is sung.

The ushers present offerings of money or other gifts and then present these offerings to the celebrant. As these offerings are presented at the 10:15 service, the People sing the following, using the tune of Hymn 380.

Be present at our table, Lord: Be here and everywhere adored; These creatures bless; and grant that we may feast in fellowship with thee. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving – adapted from Prayers for an Inclusive Church

The People stand as the offering is brought forward. The Celebrant, whether bishop or priest, faces them and

Our God comes; People The Advent of the Holy One draws near.

Celebrant Lift your hearts to heaven People Where Christ in glory reigns.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to God. People It is right to offer thanks and praise.

The Celebrant continues

Mystery of the winter skies, we thank you in the darkening hour for opening our eyes to see your starlit beauty; for parting the wide heavens to send your gentle light; for offering your word to take our mortal flesh.

He was promised by those who shared your dream of peace; John the Baptist cleared his way with words of desert fire; Mary and Joseph accepted his coming with tenderness and faith; we know that he draws near again to show us who we really are with honesty and love.

Page 13: The Third Sunday of Advent - Trinity Episcopal Churchtrinitybend.org/wp-content/uploads/2016-12-11... · 11/12/2016  · The Psalm – Psalm 146:4-9 A reader leads the congregation

13

Now we take up the song of hope that we might awaken to his coming among us and the world by the footfall of his glory:

The setting for the Sanctus (“Holy, holy, holy Lord …”) is sung as below.

The Celebrant continues

We ask that your Holy Spirit will fall upon us and upon these gifts; that these fragile, earthly things may be for us the body and blood of our Lord and brother, Jesus Christ; who on the night he was betrayed, gathered with his faltering friends for a meal that tasted of freedom.

Calling them to his table, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.

In the same way after supper, he took the cup, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, to remember me.

As on that night, so here and now he offers himself in touch and taste beyond all words can hold.

Let us therefore proclaim the great mystery of our faith:

People Christ has died, Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Page 14: The Third Sunday of Advent - Trinity Episcopal Churchtrinitybend.org/wp-content/uploads/2016-12-11... · 11/12/2016  · The Psalm – Psalm 146:4-9 A reader leads the congregation

14

The Celebrant continues

And so, in our eating and drinking we are filled with the life-giving presence of Christ; we proclaim him as creation’s host, transforming poverty into plenty in the reckless generosity of love.

Inspire us with the hope that one day death and greed will be no more and people without number will come from east and west, north and south to share the kingdom meal.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, by whom and with whom and in whom in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Lord of blessings, for ever and ever.

People AMEN.

Lord’s Prayer

Presider As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name,

your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,

now and for ever. Amen.

15

The Breaking of the Bread and Sharing of Communion

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread and a period of silence is kept.

Then may be sung

Lifting the bread and cup, the priest invites the people, saying

Come God’s people, come to receive Christ’s heavenly food.

The ushers will direct parishioners forward at the appropriate time.

All who seek God and a deeper life in Christ are welcome to receive Holy Eucharist. If you would prefer a blessing, simply cross your arms on your chest. Receiving either the bread or the wine by itself constitutes full reception of the Holy Sacrament.

Gluten-free wafers are available. If this alternative is needed, please notify the person distributing bread at the altar rail.

Communion Music

The choir and/or instrumentalists typically share music while the people receive communion.

Prayer Station (10:15 only) `

A prayer station is available while communion is being shared. If you would appreciate personal prayer, please step to the station beside the steps and a member of the Prayer Ministry Team will offer prayerful support for healing (and for sharing of any other concerns or thanksgivings).

Prayer after Communion

After Communion, the Celebrant says

Let us pray.

People Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image and nourishing us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood. Now send us forth a people forgiven, healed, renewed; that we may proclaim your love to the world and continue in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.

Commissioning of Eucharistic Visitor(s) – all stand, as able

If communion is being taken out, the Celebrant commissions the Minister(s), saying

In the name of this congregation, I send you forth bearing these holy gifts (for N.N.), that those to whom you go may share with us in the communion of Christ’s body and blood.

People We who are many are one body, because we share one bread, one cup.

Blessing of God’s People in Advent

The Celebrant offers a blessing, using a form specific to the season of Advent, saying

May Almighty God, by whose providence our Savior came among us, sanctify you with the light of his blessing and set you free. Amen.

May the one whose second Coming in power and great glory we await, make you steadfast in faith, joyful in hope, and constant in love. Amen.

May you who rejoice in the first Advent of our Redeemer, at his second Advent be rewarded with unending life. Amen.

And the blessing of God Almighty, Creator, Redeemer, and Giver of life, be with you always. Amen.

Recessional Hymn “On Jordan’s bank” Hymnal 76

The Dismissal

The Deacon, or the Celebrant, dismisses the people with these or similar words

Let us go forth in the name of Christ. People Thanks be to God.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome to Trinity We invite you to “stand and be counted” during our worship this morning – and perhaps to come to Brooks Hall for the Adult Forum at 9:15 between the two morning services, or stick around and join us for a cup of coffee and a chance to meet others here at Trinity after our 10:15 service.

Adult Forum — TODAY @ 9:15 AM Our weekly adult forum meets in Brooks Hall between our morning services, offering a time of fellowship, as well as a chance to exchange information or engage in deeper reflection.

This morning, Jed Holdorph and Bill Brisson (our Treasurer) will offer an update on our parish finances, a snapshot of our financial health as we near the end of the year. Next Sunday, we’ll enjoy some songs/music for the holidays – some familiar and expected, along with some surprises!

Candle-Lighting for parents who have lost a child — TODAY @ 7 PM (in St. Helens Hall) The Compassionate Friends, Central Oregon chapter, will participate in the annual World Wide Candle-Lighting for parents who have had a child die, of any age and of any cause.

You are invited to bring family, bring pictures/mementoes of the person who died. This is not a religious event. Registration is not required. There will be candle lighting events in every time zone, worldwide, at the 7 PM hour. For questions, call Carol Palmer @ 541-480-0667.

Vestry Nominations — due Tuesday In the November issue of The Trumpet (our monthly newsletter), we announced that we will be electing three new members to the Vestry at our Annual Meeting in January. The Nominating Committee expects to make their recommendations to the Vestry at the December meeting, on Tuesday, December 13th.

There are some “member in good standing” requirements that pertain, as well as a willingness to participate in an annual retreat/orientation day. If you – or someone you know – is interested in serving as one of these key leaders, please speak with Father Jed, either of our Wardens, Joan Wellman or Karen Hauswald, and/or any member of the Vestry Nominating Committee: David Carroll, Wynne Osborne, or Arlene Ullman.

Women’s Retreat Planning Team Meeting — Thursday @ 10:30 AM The Women’s Retreat planning team will meet in the downstairs classroom at Trinity. If you’d like to be part of shaping this offering, please come! Contact Barb Morris at [email protected] or (541) 306-2030 with questions. And save the date for our 2017 retreat: February 17- 19 at Powell Butte Retreat Center.

Greening of the Church — Next Sunday @ 11:30 AM The “hanging of the greens” is an old English custom of adorning one’s home with evergreens and other festive trappings. We’ll do the same at Trinity next Sunday, under the direction of Helen Brisson, supported by members of the Altar Guild. Adding to the festive occasion, we’ll have Christmas cookies and hot cocoa … and maybe we’ll enjoy some more music for the season!

Page 18: The Third Sunday of Advent - Trinity Episcopal Churchtrinitybend.org/wp-content/uploads/2016-12-11... · 11/12/2016  · The Psalm – Psalm 146:4-9 A reader leads the congregation

Dedications must be received in the office by December 19th to be included in the Christmas bulletins.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Services Bring all the family to church Christmas Eve! We have three services on Christmas Eve and one service only on Christmas Day (which falls on a Sunday this year):

Christmas Eve @ 4:00 PM Our first Christmas service is a “family service,” especially appropriate for families with young children. The service will feature something special for our younger participants.

Christmas Eve @ 7:30 and 10 PM The later services are more traditional, with music provided by the Trinity Choir. Caroling begins 30 minutes before each of these later services, as people arrive.

Christmas Day @ 10:00 AM (one service only) The service on Christmas Day is a relatively simple affair, with carols to sing and a story for everyone to enjoy on Christmas morning.

An invitation is included with your bulletin this morning, to use as a handy reference or to invite others to join us for Christmas.

Openings on the 10:15 Coffee Host Roster Many of you have been attending coffee hour after the 10:15 service and seem to be enjoying the coffee, treats and the perfect chance to meet new friends and visit with old ones. We are hoping to draw in some new volunteers to help with the existing teams. It is not hard and really is a fun way to meet new friends. If you are willing to give it a try or have any questions please contact Judi Inglis at (541) 389-8220 or see her at coffee hour after the 10:15 service.

Inviting Bakers to the Communion Bread Team The bread-baking team provides communion bread for weekly services and special events. If you like working with yeast dough or you want to learn how, this team is for you. If you're interested, please contact Janet Stevens at [email protected] or (541) 382-3076.

Thanks to Musicians We had a lovely service of Lessons and Carols last Sunday. Thanks to all those who came, along with those who invited friends and neighbors to join us. Thanks to readers who helped. And a very special thanks, of course, to Susan Evans, our Director of Music, and the Trinity Choir!!

They’re not done yet, though, so a word of thanks in advance for the Christmas music we’ll enjoy.

Thanks to the Elves of St. Nicholas We celebrated our annual St. Nicholas Dinner this past Wednesday. Thanks to the “elves” who organized the evening, who did the work of decorating and setting up (and taking down afterwards), and our great cooks who prepared the meal we all enjoyed. Plus there was singing!

A few photos of the fun are posted on the Brooks Hall bulletin board.

ADVENT OPPORTUNITIES

Christmas Giving Tree with Christmas Wishes Our Christmas Giving Tree is in Brooks Hall. These suggestions for gifts for children come from the Salvation Army. Unwrapped gifts may be returned today to the tree. After today, please take them to the Salvation Army office at 515 NE DeKalb before Dec. 16th. Thank you!

Christmas Food Baskets and Gifts for the Christ Child Trinity is partnering with the Salvation Army to provide 30 Christmas food baskets this year. We have an opportunity to make the holiday a little brighter for folks in our community.

You can still find grocery bags and shopping lists at the back of the church. You can get everything on the list or pick and choose, then bring back the bags during the morning services next week, placing your gift in the empty manger (or drop off at the church office).

Monetary donations help offset the cost of perishable items that will be purchased. Please make checks out to Trinity, with “Gifts to the Christ Child” in the memo line. Place your gift into the basket at the chancel steps. Donations exceeding the food basket costs are moved into our general outreach funds.

You can still sign up to help with this project. Sorting and packing happens Monday, Dec. 19th! We need help sorting, filling boxes, making phone calls (at Trinity), and making deliveries.

Alternative Christmas Donate to a charity in the name of a loved one. And ask them to do the same for you! Think of all the time you will save not shopping for the perfect gift, all the lines you will avoid, all the postage fees you won’t pay and the gasoline you won’t use. And all the good you will have done! Where can you do this? Right here during the Sunday Forum after 8am service and Coffee Hour after 10:15am service.

Visit the Alternative Christmas table and make your donation, receive your card, and enjoy the real spirit of Christmas. Cash, checks, even credit cards, are all welcome. Checks should be made out to Trinity with the charity’s name on the memo line. Charities include Family Kitchen, Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD), Condega, and Cove/COPY. All donations made to ERD will be doubled!

Ways to Reflect on the Season Lots of activities and offerings for the Advent season at Trinity are described in the December issue of The Trumpet (our monthly newsletter).

As supplies last, you can still pick up a calendar and color in panels for the next couple of weeks – or you can sign on to receive a daily reflection on a chosen word for the season from http://www.ssje.org/adventword (and then post a photo response on social media. (See the bulletin board in Brooks Hall for samples of both.)

Leaders of Anglican and Lutheran churches in full communion are offering a series of weekly reflections. A special insert in this morning’s bulletin offers the third devotion in this special series, this morning featuring Michael Curry, our Presiding Bishop.
