We inducted and welcomed a new Compatriot, Charles H. Pangburn III at the July meeting.
I welcome all Compatriots to join in with these activities. We can use more participation from any and
all. We need to build upon the great accomplishments of your Simon Kenton Chapter. We need to
further the Chapter’s patriotic involvement in the community. The furtherance of the SAR

Simon Kenton 2013 Youth Contests
Chapter Winners
Sons of the American Revolution
Student Contests *** Compatriots !!! I have listed below important student/youth contests the Simon Kenton Chapter promotes each year and the new
cycle will begin this fall. The Kentucky Society, Sons of the American Revolution is a prestigious organization with patriotic, historic,
and educational objectives. Promoting these contests not only implements our Society’s objectives, but provides some friendly
competition among our KYSSAR Chapters. Competition in the above listed contests adds valuable points to our President General’s
Activities & Americanism scores. Your Simon Kenton Chapter received over 235 entries last year in all contests combined. One of
the reasons for our Chapter’s success is we reward participating students with SAR certificates; medals on neck ribbons; and small
cash rewards, as incentives. Our contest judging must be completed by December 31 of each year in order to meet all State Contest
Chairman deadlines. (January 15) The State Chairmen will judge the submitted entries after January 15 and have the results ready for
submission / mailing, to the National Chairs, by February 1. Our Chapter level winners are invited to the Presidential Luncheon in
February to share their talents. In early February, invitations will be sent to the KYSSAR’s 1st place contest winners and coach or

high degree of merit based on: leadership qualities, military bearing, patriotism, scholarship & general excellence. The C.O. is given
full latitude in the selection of the recipients. I would suggest contacting the participating schools, in your area, early in March, to
determine how many medals may be needed for presentation by your Chapter. The high schools normally have their JROTC Honors
& Award Programs in late April or May. The KYSSAR Chapters and Chairman sent out over 80 medals in 2012-13 and most were
personally presented.
Citizenship Awards (April-May) These awards are requested each spring (March-April), by teachers or school counselors, representing 8
th grade students in middle
school. Each school is normally allotted two awards for each 8th
grade homeroom in that building. Students can be selected by the
teachers or fellow students based on a list of good citizenship qualities that include: dependability, cooperation, leadership, patriotism,
& clean speech / habits. The Chapters ask for participation; schools send their list of students to the Chapters; Chapters print the
certificates and mail them back to each school. It is a good idea to personally present the certificates, if possible, at spring honors and
award ceremonies usually held in May.

Col. Daniel Boone A portrait of Daniel Boone
from the Boone Tavern, in Berea
The Col. Daniel Boone Color Guard is our Chapter’s most important PR tool. The Color Guard is the most
visible aspect of our organization. A large group of men, women and children dressed in Revolutionary /
colonial uniforms (clothing) readily identifies us as an important historic and patriotic support unit. We
currently have eight women, three children, several CAR (Children of the American Revolution) and over 20
men who can be called into action. What a great sight it would be if we could muster about 30 participants in
our next event, which is Blue Licks!

The 2014 Congress will be in Greenville, South Carolina and the 2015 in Louisville. The Congress is usually in
Kentucky every 6-7 years because the National Headquarters is located in Louisville. The success of the event
requires at least three years of planning. Congress 2015 Chairman, Chuck Scott, is relying on each KYSSAR
Chapter for their support to assist with registration, ambassadors, table decorations, optional excursions, Color
Guard, credentials, medals /coins, and a strong physical presence. Chuck ‘s goal is to have everything planned
and ready to go by the South Carolina congress next year.
Calendar of Chapter Events
*** President Jesse Moore and Secretary Steve McCain have developed a long range planning calendar
that will be E-mailed shortly. This tool will help Compatriots plan for the numerous events of the Simon
Kenton Chapter and your Kentucky Society.
The following are the Chapter and State Events coming up:

the annual competition.

The success of many SAR Chapters can be directly correlated to their collaboration with the local DAR
Chapters. There are 84 DAR Chapters in the Commonwealth and just 18 SAR. The Kentucky membership of
the DAR is 4400, as compared to 1000 SAR Compatriots. I feel we have been lax with this needed
collaboration. Both Societies have exactly the same objectives and I think a combined effort will be beneficial
to both.

Congratulations to Harvey Hampton for receiving his Service to Veterans Medal at the July 15
th Flag Day
Luncheon and Retirement ceremony. The award is presented when a Compatriot accumulates 5000 points of
donations, time, or cash contributions. Our Chapter has focused on personal care and comfort items for the Vets
at various VA Medical centers and hospitals. We have also been involved in a joint project with Boone County
Libraries to donate books and CDs to the VA. This is actually one of our most satisfying and ongoing Chapter
activities. I am certain we could provide a more comprehensive effort if everyone could get their church or
other fraternal groups involved just one time per year. The Capt. William Arnold Chapter has secured $8400.00,
from the City of Walton, to add a Purple Heart Monument to their Veterans Park behind the City Building in
Walton. The dedication of this statewide event is scheduled for sometime in September. Remember our Color
Guard duties for the Honor Flights that arrive at CVG each month to honor our WW II and Korean Veterans.
Vietnam Vets will eventually be added. The Honor Flights do not operate in July and August due to the heat.
