DESCRIPTION
Doctor Jelley was an eccentric, no-nonsense Hackney physician who was more likely to prescribe a hearty steak to his working class patients than expensive medicine he knew they couldn’t afford. He opened a surgery on High St, Homerton in 1911. These 10 short anecdotes from elderly Hackney residents help to paint a picture that we otherwise may not have had of this colourful character. Dr Jelley had no bedside manner to speak of, but he also had none of the usual airs and graces that medical professionals of that era displayed. He was called the Threepenny Doctor because that was all he charged. And if a patient had no money to pay him, then he’d charge nothing at all. He was the spitting image of the former prime minister Neville Chamberlain and wore a bowler hat that was so shiny you could see your reflection in it.
