In The Beginning

On Sunday 22nd March 1964 at Heddon Greta speedway, a collection of Veteran and Vintage motor cycles manufactured between 1905 and 1929 were put on public display. During the course of the day, Ray Maynard discussed with Norm Mortimer the possibility of forming a Vintage Motor Cycle Club in the Newcastle area. A meeting of interested parties was convened on 6th May 1964, and was chaired by Ray Robertson at the Northumberland Hotel, Lambton. The general feeling of the 12 people present was not yet to form an organised Club but to function as a "Group" with a common interest in Vintage motor cycles. At the first meeting in ' 65 [6th January 1965], it was decided that the time had come to form an organised Club. The Club's inaugural meeting was held on Wednesday 3rd February 1965 at the Northumberland Hotel, Lambton. The minutes of that meeting declare that the following members were present: T. Ball, E. Parkes, I. Cameron, S. Algea, A. Schuck, R. Maynard, R. Gavenlock, N. Gavenlock, R. Robertson, R. Mephem, J. Taylor, H. Maddison, W. Galbraith, M. Troth, and C. Sunderland. The committee will then make a recommendation to the September general meeting advising the members of their decision. The members can then vote on a Notice of Motion for the November AGM. The Notice of Motion will then be published in the October issue of the “Throttle Lever’’ giving the required 21days’ notice of the proposal”.
