Pioneering Postdoc ProgramsYour postdoctoral training period is the ideal time to hone your skills and get needed experience that will make you the perfect candidate for the career of your choice.

There are many unique postdoc programs that train fellows in a variety of in demand skills and these training opportunities are often shorter and more structured than the traditional academic postdoc. They teach a specific skill set and can be a fast track to a “real job” afterwards. Each month in the TIBBS Times we’ll highlight a different fellowship opportunity.

Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Fellowship

This Science Policy Fellowship Program of the National Academies is designed to engage its Fellows in the analytical process that informs U.S. science and technology policy. Fellows develop basic skills essential to working or participating in science policy at the federal, state, or local levels.

2012 Session DatesWinter/Spring: January 23 through April 13, 2012Fall: August 27 through November 16, 2012 Application Information: Please visit <www.national-academies.org/policyfellows> for eligibility criteria, application instructions, and access to the online application and reference forms. Applications for the Winter/Spring 2012 session are being accepted through October 1st.

TIBBS Trivia ContestIf you’re one of the first ten PhD students to correctly identify the person pictured to the right you’ll get a free candy bar!

Here are a couple of hints:1.) As a graduate student in France and a postdoc at NIH, she studied the link between retroviruses and cancer.2.) In the early 1980’s she was sought out and asked to apply her knowledge of ret-roviruses to help identify a dangerous new virus isolated from a patient with lymphadenopathy. 3.) She was born the same day as Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Email your guesses to [email protected]. Good luck!

Group Work: Developing Skills for Learning and for LifeGroup work is widely used in college classrooms and is also a skill expected of our graduates when they apply for jobs. As with the development and delivery of your course content, group assignments need careful planning if they are to enhance the learning experience and develop collaboration skills for your students. In this workshop, participants will learn to structure effective short-and long term group work assignments, identify ways to minimize problems often encountered with group work, and develop methods to assess student learning within the group. Facilitated by Donna Bailey, Teaching and Learning Consultant, Center for Faculty Excellence Held in Wilson Library, Room 318 (CFE Conference Room) from 12:30pm – 1:30pm. To register: https://reg.abcsignup.com/reg/reg_login.aspx September 7th

Introduction to Survey WeightingThis course is an introduction to the basic concepts for weighting. It begins by defining the goals of weighting including weighting as a correction for differential selection probabilities, non-response and non-coverage. The course covers the process of developing weights for stratified two-stage sampling including computing design weights and methods for nonresponse adjustments and frame coverage error adjustments. Additional topics may include the effect of weighting on variance of the estimates and extreme weights. Held in 14 Manning Hall from 1-pm – 5pm. For more information and to register: http://cfx.research.unc.edu/res_classreg/browse_single.cfm?New=1&event=B3A19F20AA39A055A616B504F12710593EE5F04A.

Systems Proteomics Seminar: Mass Spectrometry-Based Tissue Imaging (MALDI)MALDI-Imaging Mass-spectrometry (IMS) is a novel technique at the fore-front of imaging-based scientific research. This technique allows the acquisition of “Molecular” images for any tissue based on the distribution of proteins, lipids or small molecules. With extensive application to basic and clinical research, IMS is becoming a powerful tool for diagnosis and for biomarker discovery. This conference will reunite world-leaders in IMS who will present their personal experiences on this field, including applications to basic and clinical sciences, both for diagnoses and biomarker discovery. OUTCOMES: By attending this conference you will have the opportunity to know about the state of the art of IMS. ATTENDANCE: Scientists of all fields are welcome to attend. Special emphasis will be placed on the use of IMS for cancer research. Held in MAcNider Hall, Room 321 & Bondurant G100 from 9am-3pm.
