The Church on Purpose

“Those who had been scattered preached the word

wherever they went.” Acts 8:4

It has been so good to start worshipping in person again. We have relaxed some of the restrictions but we still encourage social distancing and use of hand sanitizers. We have masks available and have a second location in the Friendship Hall to view the service if you want even more distance. We continue to enhance the online experience for those that don’t feel comfortable attending in person yet. Thanks for everyone’s patience as we navigate this ever changing situation.

We have started a new sermon series, the Church on Purpose. We are looking at the book of Acts to see how the church started, why it started, and what we need to follow to make sure we are accomplishing the purpose that Jesus has for his church. Jesus says in Acts 1 that we will receive power to be his witnesses. The early church prayed in Acts 4 for boldness to preach God’s word and power to continue to minister to those around them, despite threats from the authorities. That is why the church was started, to preach about Jesus.

Their message was simple: Jesus died for our sins and was resurrected from the dead. Acts 4:12 says “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Only Jesus saves us from an eternal separation from God himself. Only Jesus restores a holy relation-ship between us and God. For a church to complete the purpose Je-sus has for it, that message must be the core of everything we do. That’s what drives us. I look forward to going through Acts this summer and I encourage you to read along with me.

Two of the reasons that guests return to a church have to do with their children. First, their kids loved the children’s area and second, the children’s area was secure and sanitary. I’m very thankful for the people behind our ROK (Reaching Our Kids) and God’s Singers programs. They are already planning for this up-coming year. We are looking at adding a ROK program one Sun-day a month during the sermon time. It would be connected to the Wednesday ROK program and would continue to teach the truth of God’s love in a fun and creative way.

I want to say thank you to Linda Schnieders for the new art work outside of the nursery. She added the bible verse “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14) We continue to put a priority on our children and their spiritual growth. When the nursery re-opens in the future, families will see firsthand our love for their children.

May God bless all of you this summer. Don’t forget to catch our services online at our website if you are travelling this summer. We miss seeing everyone but make sure to make worship a priori-ty even when you are not able to attend in person.

Yours in Christ,

Russ

Special Benevolence— July

RAPE & ABUSE CRISIS SERVICE (RACS)

The special benevolent mission project for July is the Rape and Abuse Crisis Service (RACS). RACS is a non-shelter, social service agency providing crisis intervention, advocacy, support and education/prevention services to vic-tims/survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking. RACS began its mission in early 1980 by establishing a 24-hour crisis hotline to offer emotional support and referral information to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Nine central Missouri counties are served by RACS including Cole, Gasconade, Maries, Miller, Moniteau, Morgan, Osage, Southern Boone and Southern Callaway. The agency continues to evaluate the services provided in order to more effectively address victims’ needs. Services have gradually expanded as needs and funding for this not-for-profit agency have increased. The services they provide are free of charge to people who have been victims. They also provide education and prevention programs to end personal violence in our society. Providing victims with the opportunity to regain confidence, control and direction in their lives helps keep this community strong. Please give to the important mission in the attached envelope. If you would like additional information, please check out their website at racsjc.org. Please make checks payable to the United Church of Christ and note RACS on the memo line

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS & OFFICERS ZOOM MEETING JUNE 2, 2020

Those present were Brett Hall, Larry Rohrbach, Ronda Mortenson, Courtney Cassil, & Judy Burger

Judy opened the meeting with prayer. The minutes of the May meeting were approved. The treasurer's report was reviewed & approved.

The June benevolence is for Central MO Foster Care & Adoption.

Camp Mo-Val & Camp Aurora have canceled church camp for 2020.

Vacation Bible School was discussed with the reports of opinions on whether to have VBS, & in what format. A final decision will be made by June 15th .

Sunday School start-up was discussed with what format it may hold. Adult classes appear to be ready to start whenever Consistory approves. PreK & K classes will be delayed, but parents may bring children to their class. Other classes were looked at & determined what rooms they might be able to spread out for the social distancing requirement. Sunday School opening will be delayed, with no refreshments & a shorter class time. Questions were raised concerning the use of Zoom classes when the Church has services. We will at-tempt to have a suggestion for the Consistory to review.

The July meeting will be held on Tuesday July 7.

Respectfully submitted, Judy Burger
