The Time Capsule of William B. Drake
Electronically Preserved by Lily Marsh3W English 9 AP Prep
Music
Glenn Miller is great. His songs are often broadcasted on the wireless. I like “In the Mood” best. Darwin, my friend, prefers Dean Martin, though.

most evenings after dinner in front of it.

Glenn Miller’s Music
• Started The Army Air Force Band– Played swing music, which came from
jazz, but is very orchestrated– Unique style and sound was key for the
band’s success
Propaganda
Darwin told me I should put my drawing skills into making posters and propaganda. Here’s some of my inspiration.

Rosie the Riveter, left, symbolizes the capability of working women, trying to convince them to do their bit during the war.http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/powers_of_persuasion/its_a_womans_war_too/images_html/we_can_do_it.html
“Man the GUNS,” right, is persuading young men to join the navy.http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/powers_of_persuasion/man_the_guns/images_html/man_the_guns.html
Propaganda
• Propaganda was used on both sides of the war to convince people their side is right. American propaganda mainly targeted young men, urging them to fight. Others were asking people to buy war bonds, save their scrap metal, or even carpool.

Books
I read China Sky, by Pearl S. Buck. It was pretty good; about a hospital in China run by Americans. It was published last year. Anna, my sister, likes Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, even though it’s really old.

Books
• When thinking of WWII, people rarely think of books. Reading didn’t seem to be a major concern while the war was raging overseas.

Penicillin
I read somewhere about this drug that’s good at fighting infection. It’s called penicillin, and it was discovered by accident a by Dr. Alexander Fleming. Pure penicillin was harnessed by Ernest Chain and Howard Florey in 1940.

Inventions and Medical Breakthroughs
• During WWII, several things appeared that have been useful to us even today. Among these are blood banks, penicillin, duct tape, jeeps, several types of guns, etc. Most all of these impacted the war in some way.

Fashion
Darwin says appearance is everything. I don’t think I agree, but I won’t say anything to him.
July 30th, 1942-Liam
Darwin said he could really get into the “zoot suit” idea. I dissuaded him from it.http://vintagedressup.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Fashion
• Zoot suits became a new fashion trend– High-waisted and wide-legged
(dramatically tighter at the ankles) trousers, plus an oversized jacket with large lapels, these fashion atrocities make people look like caricatures, but it seemed “cool” in the forties.

Political Leaders
Franklin D. Roosevelt is the President. I don’t know about him; I’m not into politics that much…

FDR
• President of the USA all through the Depression and most all of WWII. Declared war after Pearl Harbor was bombed.

The Second World War
We bombed Japan two days ago. This has got to be a turning point of the war. It can’t go on forever, can it?

A friend of mine sent me this. This is the crew of the Enola Gay B29 bomber.
