• The TLIU is a DST funded initiative that is hosted by the Implementation Unit (IU) of the CSIR.

• Programme was established in 2012.• The TLIU was formed to assist with the technological enhancement of the manufacturing

sector as defined within the Technology Localisation Plan of the DST.• This programme is aligned to the infrastructure rebuild programme of the government as well

as other national imperatives linked to governmental development plans• The DST as part of its role to support CSDP realised the need to support the South African

manufacturing sector with technological interventions.

company achieved an EN13261 accreditation from the Duetsche Bahn

• Only axle manufacturer in South Africa• The company can now supply axle to Europe

and North America• SWASAP have been awarded contracts from

Bombardier to supply axles to projects in Riyadh, Queensland and London.

• The export orders to these 3 projects exceeds a total R 50,000,000.

• iSolar is a local Solar Water Heater (SWH) manufacturing company based in the Western Cape.

• iSolar is black managed and owned and is a level 3 BBBEE contributor.

• The company was established in 2006 and has primarily focussed on the local manufacture of SWH for the rollout programme linked to Eskom and the Department of Energy (DoE).

• Based on the requirements as set out by SABS (SATS 1286 : 2011) iSolar’s 100L LP SWH (system) was 85% local.

• Through TLIU assistance iSolar developed the flat plate collector and ensured that the new collector is SABS Marked and approved.

• iSolar’s flat plate collector is now fully compliant with SATS 1286 with a 100% local content.

• In terms of the new National Procurement Act iSolar’s SWH is also fully compliant for projects of National, Provincial Governments, municipalities and State Owned Companies.

• The SABS approval of the new 100lt SWH with the flat plate secured iSolar a contract to supply 463 SWH”s for a housing project in Langa for the City of Cape Town. Power Construction the main contractor appointed iSolar to manufacture, supply and install the SWH’s.

• iSolar is now the only company in the Western Cape that manufacture a 100lt SABS approved SWH with a flat plate collector and stainless inner tank.

• Speedcraft Manufacturing is a Level 2 manufacturer of Line Hardware.

• This company was formerly known as Pfisterer and was bought out by a black consortium.

• The TLIU assisted Speedcraft manufacturing with product development and testing support linked to new line hardware platework.

• Both products are linked to projects with Eskom and will be approved by Eskom engineering.

• Relevant Eskom projects are Gromis-Oranjemond and Medupi-Spitskop

• These products were previously imported into the country.

• The products will be registered as local IP.

• Was initiated through a initiative piloted by the DST with 26 foundries in 2011• Analysis of the data indicated that South African foundries were not using advanced manufacturing

techniques• The main technology identified was simulation software• Simulation software is used to optimise processes and tooling within the foundry environment• Software assists with flow analysis, design of moulds and also capacity planning • Has an effect on rejects and scrap which has a direct impact on the cost of production• Barriers to foundries purchasing software was costs and skills• Simulation Centre was created at VUT with a national network using the technology stations
