Phillip Keveren,Conference ClinicianShortly after his birth near Vale, Oregon, on June 25, 1961, Phillip Keveren would discover what would later become his life calling and work. The son of a dentist, Robert, and a schoolteacher, Mardene, Phillip was experimenting on the family piano with unusual determination before the age of eight. After observing this behavior for a few years, Phillip’s parents wisely sought out the expertise of Karen Sherve, who became the burgeoning musician’s first piano teacher (age 8-13). As his ability and interest blossomed further, Phillip received further instruction from Fern Nolte Davidson, legendary College of Idaho piano professor. By the time Phillip graduated as the Valedictorian of Vale High School, a solid foundation had been laid for his musical training, and the gifted young man knew very clearly the direction his college education should take.

Phillip’s higher education began at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon (1979- 1981), where he served as pianist and arranger for the Mt. Hood Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Two years later, he transferred to California State University, Northridge, where he completed a Bachelor of Music (composition) in 1984, graduating with honors (cum laude). Finally, Mr. Keveren attended the University of Southern California to complete a Master of Music (composition), where he graduated with the honor of “Outstanding Composition Graduate” in 1986. The natural musical aptitude Phillip enjoyed as a young boy now stood confirmed by his successful college journey.

Yamaha Corporation of America became Mr. Keveren’s first post-university employer. While he was the Director of Electone Instruction (Yamaha Music Education System; Buena Park, California), Phillip learned to write music for pedagogical use, which further enriched his graduate education. He continued to work for Yamaha until 1987, when a single step of faith to become a freelance musician set the rest of his career into motion.

Since then, Mr. Keveren has successfully worked on diverse projects ranging from piano methods, to instrumental recordings, to orchestrations for premiere Christian artists. He is a co-author of the Hal Leonard Student Piano Library, a comprehensive series of instructional books. The method has become an international best-seller (translated into six languages), and it features Phillip’s compositions, arrangements, and accompaniment orchestrations. Hal Leonard Corporation, recognized as the largest print publisher in the world, also inaugurated The Phillip Keveren Series in 2000, which features his diverse and stylish piano arrangements (over 70 folios in print) that have sold over half a million units. Mr. Keveren collaborated with Billy Joel to produce a book of piano arrangements (Billy Joel Easy Classics), which set Billy’s pop songs in classical styles from Mozart to Bartok. He has traveled throughout the United States and internationally (Canada, Europe, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand) to support these piano publications. Phillip is also known for his choral octavos and musicals, which nearly every major print publisher has released. Shelter, a collaboration with Paul Marino, was nominated as “best choral collection of 2009” by Worship Leader Magazine.

Mr. Keveren has also produced dozens of instrumental recordings that feature his unique orchestrations and distinctive piano artistry. Discovery House Music’s Classical Praise

series includes many of his productions, including: “Violin & Piano”, “Cello & Piano,” “String Quartet,” and “Symphony of Carols,” to name a few. His piano solo recording, “Softly and Tenderly” has become a perennial bestseller. Phillip’s gifts have allowed him to arrange and orchestrate for many well-known Christian artists including Jeremy Camp, Mandisa, Travis Cottrell, Sara Groves, Sandi Patti, Larnelle Harris, Dennis Jernigan, Twila Paris, Ronan Tynan, Michael & Carrie Hodge, Greg Long, Mark Harris, Bob Carlisle, and the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir.

Phillip Keveren currently resides in Brentwood, Tennessee, where, by God’s strength and inspiration, his musical creativity and his capabilities in production, orchestration and arranging continue to flourish and gain recognition in the Nashville music community and around the world. In his leisure time he enjoys gardening and the masterful cooking of his wife, Lisa, of nearly 25 years (married 1985). Among the manifold productions on which Mr. Keveren has collaborated, the couple’s children, Lindsay (born 1988) and Sean (born 1990), are Phillip’s most treasured.

The Peabody Trio, Conference ArtistSince winning the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1989, THE PEABODY TRIO has established itself as an important presence in the chamber music world as vivid interpreters of the classics of the repertoire, advocates for new music, and dedicated teachers and mentors to a generation of young musicians. They bring to their music making what The Washington Post calls “the romantic fervor of the 20th century greats.”

The Peabody Trio gave its New York debut in 1990 at Alice Tully Hall and has since performed in the most important chamber music series in North America, including New York, Washington, Chicago, Denver, Vancouver, Montreal, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Internationally, they tour frequently in England, making repeat appearances at London’s Wigmore Hall, and in Japan and Israel. Their reputation as champions of new music garnered them an invitation to the first Biennale for contemporary music, Tempus Fugit, in Tel Aviv.

Festivals including Tanglewood, Skaneateles, Cape and Islands, and Rockport have played home to their summer performances. Their radio broadcasts include performances on Saint Paul Sunday Morning, NPR’s Performance Today, Morning Pro Musica, CBC, Radio-Canada, WGBH in Boston, and WQXR in New York. The Peabody Trio collaborates frequently with such eminent artists as clarinetist Charles Neidich, violists Roger Tapping and Maria Lambros, soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson, and actor Andre De Shields. Working with Walter van Dyck and Elizabeth Mansfield, The Peabody Trio is at the forefront of chamber music theater with a series of innovative, collaborative projects involving piano trio and actor.  The Peabody Trio currently serves as the resident faculty ensemble of the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, a position they have held since 1989. They are frequently asked to perform educational residencies for chamber music organizations and have served as visiting professors at universities and conservatories both in the United States and abroad. They spend summers as ensemble-in-residence at the Yellow Barn Music School and Festival in Putney, Vermont.  The Peabody Trio celebrated its twentieth season with the release of the Beethoven Trios Opus 1, Nos. 1 and 3 on Artek Records, the second in their series of the complete piano trios of Beethoven. Gramophone Magazine called this recording a "bold, flexible and vibrant" performance in which Beethoven's music received "consummate consideration." Their recording of the Beethoven Opus 70 Trios on Artek was praised by Strad Magazine as "some of the most accomplished Beethoven Trio playing …heard in many a year." They have also recorded for New World Records and CRI.

Individual BiographiesThe three musicians of the Peabody Trio come from diverse musical backgrounds. VIOLAINE MELANÇON serves on the violin and chamber music faculties of the Peabody Conservatory. An artist deeply dedicated to the range of violin and chamber music repertoire, she has a special affection for the music of today. The Israeli composer Shulamit Ran wrote a violin concerto for her and she has premiered several works by other leading composers. During the spring of 2012, she presented the

Page 16: the TMTA Conference Book 2016 PDF

complete works for solo violin by J.S. Bach, a project which will continue for the next few years.  Ms. Melançon is from Quebec, Canada. After receiving First Prize in violin at the Conservatoire de Musique, she continued her studies with Ivan Galamian at the Curtis Institute of Music, with Isadore Tinkleman at the San Francisco Conservatory and with Arthur Grumiaux in Belgium. While at Curtis, she was a member of the Nisaika Quartet, prize winner of the 8th International String Quartet competition in Evian, France. Ms. Melançon is also the recipient of many awards for solo performance including the 1984 Prix d’Europe. In 1983, she formed the Knopp-Melançon Duo, who was appointed USIA Artistic Ambassadors in 1987, toured abroad extensively and made their Washington, DC debut at the Kennedy Center. Since then, her activities as a chamber musician, soloist with orchestras, and teacher have taken her to major music centers in United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and Japan. She also regularly serves on the faculty of NOI, the National Orchestral Institute and Festival, and gives yearly masterclasses at the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival. During the summer, she serves on the faculty of the Yellow Barn Music School and Festival. Her performances are heard on the Naxos, Artek, CRI, and New World Records labels.

Cellist NATASHA BROFSKY has enjoyed a career in both the United States and Europe. In addition to her work with the Peabody Trio, Ms. Brofsky has performed as guest with numerous ensembles, including the Takács, Prazak, Norwegian, Borromeo, Jupiter and Ying Quartets. During nearly a decade in Europe, Ms. Brofsky held principal positions in the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra under Iona Brown. In addition she was a member of the Serapion Ensemble, performing with them in Germany and Austria, and the string trio, Opus 3, which performed throughout Norway. She recorded Olav Anton Thommessen's concerto for cello and winds for Aurora Records and was a regular participant at Open Chamber Music in Prussia Cove, England.  A sought after teacher, Ms. Brofsky serves on the cello faculties of the New England Conservatory and the Juilliard School. Since 2001, she has been on the faculty at the Yellow Barn Festival in Vermont. She was previously on the faculty of the Barratt-Due Musikk Institutt in Oslo Norway. Ms. Brofsky  has given master classes at many colleges and conservatories in the US and abroad, including for El Sistema in Venezuela as well as at Oberlin Conservatory, The Eastman School and Mannes College.  She gave a featured master class at the 2013 American String Teachers Association National Conference.

Pianist SETH KNOPP is a founding member of the Peabody Trio and serves on the piano and chamber music faculties of the Peabody Conservatory where the trio has been ensemble-in-residence since 1987. In 2000 he was named Artistic Director of the Yellow Barn Music School and Festival, an international gathering of artists who meet each summer to explore the vast riches of the chamber music repertoire. Knopp studied at the New England Conservatory with Leonard Shure, at the San Francisco Conservatory, where he studied with Nathan Schwartz, and with Leon Fleisher. In 1983, Mr. Knopp met violinist Violaine Melançon forming the Knopp-Melançon Duo, an

PAGE "15

Page 17: the TMTA Conference Book 2016 PDF

artistic collaboration which would eventually expand to become the Peabody Trio. In 1987, as a result of having been appointed USIA Artistic Ambassadors, the duo made their Washington D.C. debut at the Kennedy Center and subsequently toured throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan and Egypt. Seth Knopp’s solo and chamber music performances can be heard on the Albany Records, Analekta, Artek, CRI, Koch and New World Records labels. Since 2010 he has been curator of Soundings, a concert series presented at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas, drawing on the relationship between musical traditions and innovation, and the unique lens through which music helps us to better understand the world.

Alayne began piano study at the age of seven. She continued her study through college, earning a B. A. in Sacred Music from Tennessee Temple University, (Summa Cum Laude) and a M. M. in Piano Literature and Pedagogy from the University of Georgia. After finishing her master’s degree, she studied with Dr. Sigrid Luther for two and a half years, presenting two recitals at Bryan College during that time. She considers continuing education to be a vitally important aspect of music teaching, attending nearly all teacher training offered through CMTA and TMTA conferences, master classes and workshops. She has earned the TMTA Certificate of Achievement and has held TMTA and MTNA Professional Certification continuously since 1986. All students in Alayne’s studio are given a well-rounded music education, covering all eight areas of the TMTA musicianship manual, classical music literature and additional literature of the student’s choosing. During a 33-year teaching career, her piano and flute students have consistently received Superior ratings in CMTA and TMTA auditions, in Jr. Music Festival local and state events, in Guild Auditions, and in Hamilton County Hymn Festivals. Her students have been named winner, runner-up and honorable mention at TMTA and TN State Federation competitions, as well as winning CMTA Music Camp Scholarship and College Scholarship Competitions, and recently the Southern Adventist University Concerto Competition. Many students present solo recitals in 9th and 12th grades. Numerous students have majored and minored in music, many continue music study in some way through college, and several have earned advanced music degrees and are pursuing professional music careers. Holding every CMTA officer position at some point through the years, Alayne has been an active member of MTNA since 1984, and was a collegiate chapter member at UGA. She has served CMTA in numerous areas, currently as treasurer (15 years), directory/handbook editor and Pianorama Program editor. Her TMTA involvement includes service to all the state conferences held in Chattanooga since 1984, producing the conference booklet, serving as registrar, and treasurer (as well as general gopher and background detail person!); and monitoring state auditions at locations across TN over the years. Alayne has also served the musical community as adjudicator at various local and state piano events and competitions. Alayne’s professional collaborative piano experience began shortly after her 14th birthday, when she became the pianist for her church. She has been on the bench nearly every Sunday and weekly choral rehearsal since, currently at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga. Other collaborations include numerous instrumental and vocal recital accompaniments, at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and volunteer local musical theater accompaniment. Alayne has also been staff accompanist for Covenant College this past year and for Chattanooga Christian School for six years previous to that. Past musical honors include election to Pi Kappa Lambda (Music Honor Society) in 1984, listed in Outstanding Young Women of America in 1987, and awarded CMTA Teacher of the Year in 1990. But most importantly, Alayne is immensely grateful for the music community of MTNA, TMTA and CMTA which has provided invaluable mentors, colleagues, continuing education and opportunities for professional and student growth. Many heartfelt thanks to all of you!

DANA MEYER

Dana Meyer, founder and Artistic Director of Music City Strings, is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music and has been passionate about teaching for more than 35 years. In her early years she developed and implemented the Boone County Schools Strings Program in West Virginia, was a faculty member of the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, North Carolina, instructor and chamber music coach at the New World School of the Arts (Miami), and became a performing faculty member of the Tucson Chamber Music in the Mountains in Tucson, Arizona. While much of her early teaching career was focused on the high school and collegiate level, Mrs. Meyer performed extensively with chamber music groups and major orchestras in the United States. She has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Denver Symphony, the Richmond Symphony, and with all the major orchestras in Florida. During her decade long tenure with the American Sinfonietta, she toured Europe annually and was part of the performing faculty at the Bellingham Music Festival. While in Florida, Mrs. Meyer taught at the Dillard High School of Performing Arts and was instrumental in securing college scholarships for her students Kevin Sylvester and Wilner Baptiste, who have since formed the famed hip hop duo Black Violin. In 1999, Mrs. Meyer discovered a passion for the teaching of young students and established her first private Suzuki studio in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She immersed herself in the Suzuki pedagogy and became a protégé of Ronda Cole. As her studio thrived she became President of the Suzuki Association of South Florida. In 2005, Dana Meyer established a violin studio in Franklin, Tennessee. Her dream was to create a program that would provide children the means to become confident, sensitive and beautiful artists. Music City Strings was the result of this dream. In 2012 Music City Strings was one of three groups in all of North and South America chosen to perform at the Suzuki Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota on the International Ensemble Concert. Because of this performance, Music City Strings was discovered by The League of Astonishing Strings and invited by the founders of Barrage on a concert tour of Europe during the summer of 2015. This was a transformative experience for the group. Music City Strings has since performed at the Ryman Auditorium with Amy Grant and Vince Gill and on the Thanksgiving TOKENS Show, also at the Ryman. Music City Strings performed with Michael W. Smith at the Allen Arena at Lipscomb University and at the Franklin Theater in Franklin, Tennessee. Members of MCS performed in the music video Sonera with Nathan Pacheco, and the group has performed for the Hope Foundation with Steven Curtis Chapman, DayStar Ministries, Music City Roots, the Lighting of the Green with Amy Grant, Channel 4 News at Midday, the Franklin Main Street Festival, Lawrenceburg Crocket Theater, and Dickens of a Christmas in Franklin, Tennessee among others. Music City Strings is also engaged in community outreach performances in such places as the Sarah Canon Cancer Clinic, Vanderbilt ALS Clinic, nursing homes, and retirement communities. While Mrs. Meyer’s time is now mainly consumed with Music City Strings other former faculty positions and posts include the Wintergreen Performance Academy, the Middle Tennessee State University Governor’s School of Music, the South Carolina Suzuki Institute at Furman, The Fine Arts Student Academy in Nashville, and President of the Middle Tennessee Suzuki Association. In addition to her role as Artistic Director of Music City Strings, Mrs. Meyer is currently a faculty member with the Greater Washington DC Suzuki Institute, the Suzuki Institute at PhoenixPhest! in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Auditions Coordinator for the Strings Division of NAMTA. This summer Mrs. Meyer begins an additional faculty position, the Suzuki String Institute at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, where Music City Strings has also been asked to perform.
