CAMP TOWANDA GRAN PRIX TENNIS LEAGUE

Robert Edwards, our Tennis Director for 7 years, is proud to announce the Gran Prix Tennis League. Roberto says, "This will be a weekly competition to accumulate points during the groups' tennis activity periods. A stipulated amount of tasks, exercises, and skills have to be performed to obtain the league points. Both boys' camp and girls' camp will have their own separate competition, producing a weekly champion (group) on each campus, with proper recognition!" As with everything Robert brings to camp, this promises to be yet another great enhancement to our program!

For returning campers and staff, it is always very exciting to get off the bus and have that familiar rush of breathing in "camp air", seeing the people you know, the places you are familiar and comfortable with …..and, of course, discovering what is new…… this year, many will notice small subtle changes like a remodeled THE BOARD, the relocation of the portable climbing wall to the bumper car barn (so you can climb in place while waiting for your bumper car turn!), new sailboat, redesigned high elements at the O&A (outdoor adventure) course; a new floating mat in the lake, and not to mention "improved" glow in the dark GHOST and Dancing With the Staff!! ... AND MORE!!!Speaking of S'more, more significant and noticeable changes could be the NEW OUTPOST 06 (formerly The Outpost 01), which will comfortably house our illustrious KMP (Kitchen and Maintenance Personnel) male staff, security guards as well as an all new MEDIA CENTER for our newsletter (The Towanda Times), radio station (WCTR- 1600 AM), Friday Nite Flix (FNF) and website and podcasting control

room. In addition the OUTPOST 06 will have guest bathrooms for our visiting teams.

And finally, we will have opening ceremonies for THE NEW BONE GULLY HOCKEY ARENA….after 2 years of waiting, it will be ready for this summer. Many of you will recall untimely delays due to weather conditions (non stop rain in the 2004-5 off season), to the finding of the massive bone that was sent off for analysis (by the way, did you know that last year's National Boys discovered many bone and tooth fragments out at the farm that have been shipped off for forensic diagnostics.)? The hockey arena is large, enclosed but airy… it is awesome. You will just have to see for yourselves! Please note that the photos were taken in early April.

The College ConnectionThis winter we have experienced "college searching" with our son, Jared, who is entering his senior year in the fall (I know you alums who knew him as a newborn are flipping out)! We discovered when touring colleges it was an incredible benefit to know a counselor at every school we visited. The benefits of knowing someone at the school include great insight, getting a "real" tour as well as it being a great comfort.Stephanie and I realized that we want to offer, as a benefit, to our camp families, a networking college connection. Therefore, we are asking for our staff and alums (that are willing to participate) that are currently enrolled in college to send us their email address, the school name and graduation year. We will compile a list of emails and schools. Those families going on tour can then contact that camp person. By the way, it usually ends up being a "free lunch" for the touring college student! While on this subject, we would like to shout out and thank the following for their time while we were on tour: TUFTS: Alissa Brandon; DELAWARE: Michelle Lapidos; CORNELL: Charlie Niesenbaum; LEHIGH: Jason Schatz & Matt Miller; BOSTON U: John Salt; SYRACUSE: Amanda Silverman, Hani Cohen, Micki Kabler and Emily St Lifer.

For those of you who live on Long Island and in Westchester and want to shop for camp AND do a good deed at the same time....

The fist annual "S.C.O.P.E. Kids Go to Camp" will be held at all Neil's Stores, on Saturday, May 6th. For every dollar you spend on clothes and supplies for your kids, Neil's will donate a percentage to Summer Camp Opportunities Provide an Edge (S.C.O.P.E.), an organization that provides camperships for inner-city children to attend non-profit overnight camps in the tri-state area. Co-sponsored by S.C.O.P.E., Summer Camp Opportunities Provide an Edge. www.scope-ny.org. Mitch is on the Board of Directors of SCOPE, which is one o f the organizations we get the LITs involved with. It is a worthwhile cause for everyone who loves camp. Neil's Stores are located in: Albertson (516) 294-4425; Woodbury (516) 364-3942;Scarsdale (914) 472-8120; and, Mt. Kisco (914) 244-7010.

Leaders-In-TrainingThe LIT (Leaders-In-Training) Program, for those campers entering 11th and 12th grade, like other programs at camp, is always improving and enhancing. As our future counselors, they are making the transition from camper to counselor through many different activities. This year, their Group Leaders have designed several projects and activities for them. Activities such as mitzvah projects and community service to charitable volunteering. In addition, they will have a book club as well as encouragement in regards to thinking ahead about preparing for college. The 2nd year LITs will be doing a college tour to the mid-Atlantic region, while the 1st year LITs explore Niagara Falls and Toronto. As mentioned in The College Connection article (in this issue), we will be helping these high school students tour various colleges during the off season.

Additional daily activities this summer include experiences with each age group, opportunities to work alongside the specialists at their departments, waitering duties, and being a big part of special events.

The LITs have become an important part of camp….leading camp into the future. After all, leadership skills are key to success at school, work and play. We are excited for this year's crew to arrive (see you at the first dinner)!
