Introduction Separating AI Trendsetters from the Knockoffs

For a long time the main obstacle to AI adoption

across industries was the notion that the technology

just wasnrsquot ready for business deployment Artificial

intelligence seemed like a good idea but decision-

makers too often shrugged it off as not fully mature

at best and a science fiction-fueled pipe dream at

worst

Today however there are very few who donrsquot

recognize AIrsquos current impact on the economy

and even fewer who donrsquot expect that impact to

deepen in the future But now that AI is fashionable

the challenge for businesses is to separate real

trendsetters offering ldquoautonomousrdquo AI solutions mdash

software or equipment that uses artificial intelligence

to independently make decisions take actions

then report on those decisions and actions mdash from

imitators trying to profit from the trend Many of the

products being billed as AI or machine learning are

knockoffs that only offer automation mdash technology

that is unable to make any decisions that havenrsquot

already been prescribed by their human operators

These imitators arenrsquot likely to drive any real results

for their users and are therefore unlikely to play a

very big role in the development of AI as it transforms

our economy our jobs and our day-to-day life in

the coming years To get a clearer sense of that

future we looked for some of the most innovative

applications of autonomous AI across industries and

took a deeper dive into how their contributions will

likely shape their own sectors as well as the world at

large

All of the AI companies we spoke with are offering

something new and exciting to their respective

spaces automotive robotics marketing healthcare

manufacturing and finance Important factors like

government regulation will have a huge impact on

AIrsquos future direction but for the time being these

innovators offer us the best glimpse of a better more

efficient more autonomous future

Automotive - Waymo

Formerly known as the Google Car Project Waymo

has rapidly grown from a top-secret pet project in

2009 to its own subsidiary company in 2016 With the

possible exception of Cruise a General Motors-owned

competitor Waymo is virtually unchallenged as the

leader of the autonomous automobile space

While other would-be driverless automakers have tried

to force their car designs to accommodate AI Waymo

takes the opposite approach creating software that

easily integrates with contemporary car models

Waymo understood early on1 that an autonomous car

should disrupt its market not the experience of its end-

user Thatrsquos why the company is placing an emphasis

on collaboration with automakers like Chrysler Jaguar

Honda and semi-truck manufacturer Peterbilt The

company wants to create a single piece of software

that can be integrated with cars that people already

know and love rather than building a car of their own

But while Waymo is relying on its partners in the auto

industry to provide the vehicles themselves both the

hardware and software that make up its autonomous

ldquodriverrdquo are developed in-house2 The companyrsquos

cutting-edge AI technology relies on a range of

different sensors a light detection and ranging (LiDAR)

unit emits millions of laser beams a second to build a

picture of the cars surroundings that extends up to

300 yards in every direction

2 K Korosec (2017 January) 5 Things to Know About the Future of Googlersquos Self-Driving Car Company Way - PwC httpfortunecom20170108waymo-detroit-future

Radars are used to determine exactly how far away

objects are from the vehicle while high-resolution

cameras offer 360-degree views of your surroundings

to pick up on visual cues like traffic signals even if

theyrsquore in low or harsh lighting Whatrsquos more Waymo

has been steadily driving down the price of this

often expensive equipment eliminating what many

perceived to be an obstacle to widespread consumer

adoption of self-driving cars

Whatrsquos more interesting to us than all of this cutting-

edge equipment however is whatrsquos ldquobeneath the

hoodrdquo so to speak Waymorsquos AI system is informed not

only by all the hardware we just described but by hours

and hours of driving experience gained during test runs

Some of that comes from driving beta versions of the

product on real city streets but the bulk of it actually

comes from virtual simulations3 These simulations allow

the developers to test highly complex traffic situations

that would be rare and often dangerous to test in the

real world The eight million miles Waymo vehicles have

logged are all fed into its central AI allowing each of its

vehicles to learn from the collectiversquos experiences and

apply those learnings on the road

With both more hours of driving than any human

can remember and better sensory information than

any human can gather Waymorsquos deep learning

algorithms have everything they need to achieve

the companyrsquos mission of making driving safer for

everyone The question in the next coming years is not

if Waymo will dominate our roads but when

Robotics Process Automation - Automation Anywhere

The advance of AI and other technologies is

expanding the possibilities of what can and cannot

be automated Automation is obviously appealing to

enterprises looking to increase their profit margins but

most of them need a solution that can be designed

to fit their specific processes without the need for any

advanced programming on their part That solution

appears to be Robotics Process Automation (RPA) and

the top player in that space is Automation Anywhere

RPA itself merely refers to the use of software to

automate routine tasks that humans typically find too

mundane and repetitive to do efficiently automatically

completing tasks like filling out invoices or making and

emailing meeting transcriptions to attendees Where

it gets really interesting is with the implementation

of AI which allows the robots to not just repeat the

movements prescribed by their programmers but learn

new and more efficient methods based on what they

observe This is where the potential of the technology

truly opens up and Automation Anywhere is one of the

few companies even beginning to scratch the surface

of that potential

The companyrsquos IQ bots do much of the heavy lifting

that previous work process automation technologies

have failed to take on Because other RPA platforms

donrsquot use cognitive technology they can only

automate rather than work autonomously That

means that any data that might inform how the bot

performs a certain job has to be hand-fed to the

platform by human users making their implementation

more difficult and reducing the potential benefits to

be gained from automation in the first place

Automation Anywhere applies its AI to the task of

structuring all the data that other RPA platforms might

miss from semi-structured data like contracts and

invoices to completely unstructured data like emails

instant messages and even video That makes it

possible for them to handle content-centric front-end

work like customer service but these capabilities are

more critical to back-office activities4 than many RPA

adopters think All the information it takes to complete

administrative tasks like cross-checking financial

documents and writing form letters may exist in

unstructured formats like scanned PDF files and invoices

While other players in the RPA space are struggling to

seamlessly automate processes with the technology

Automation Anywhere is realizing RPArsquos full potential

Forrester has dubbed Automation Anywhere5 a

leader in the RPA space and itrsquos easy to see why the

company is going the whole nine yards to make sure

their product integrates with any companyrsquos existing

processes mdash no matter their scale or industry

Medical - Sentrian

Yoursquove probably already heard plenty of lofty

prognostications about a future where doctors can

begin to anticipate and treat your illnesses before

you even feel their symptoms but Sentrian is the

company thatrsquos actually closest to making those

fantasies a reality Recognizing a crisis in American

healthcare where more people are living longer lives

and experiencing greater rates of chronic disease

the company is using biosensors and AI to stay two

steps ahead of illnesses so that patients can spend

their lives in the comfort of their homes

Sentrian bills itself as ldquothe first remote patient

intelligence companyrdquo and aims to use its AI to

analyze massive volumes of patient data in order

to more accurately predict when chronically ill

individuals will actually need to be hospitalized Care

providers often donrsquot have the necessary information

to determine which medical problems can be

reversed through a fairly moderate intervention

and when This leads to many unnecessary

hospitalizations excessive medical costs and a

drastic impact on the patientrsquos quality of life

Sentrian aims to fix these problems by bridging the

gap between primary care clinicians and patients

with chronic illness who are living at home As remote

biosensors become both more advanced and

more affordable the company plans to leverage

the massive amount of medical data they produce

by training their AI to do the work of a full-time

clinical team The AI is taking in massive amounts

of information from around the world not only from

biosensors but importantly from the information

reported by patients and doctors All this data is

enabling the AI to detect warning signs in patients

that would normally take a team of doctors to

identify

New technologies have traditionally faced huge

obstacles to adoption in healthcare because of how

strongly regulated the field is with IT professionals

often struggling to connect all the various platforms

that do manage to get FDA approval in ways that are

both efficient and compliant Thatrsquos why the Sentrian

platform is device-and gateway-agnostic which

means that as more devices become approved

and used they can immediately start feeding data

into the platformrsquos AI This will only serve to make its

decisions more informed as more data devices and

patients are plugged into it

Like with Automation Anywhere the Sentrian AIrsquos truly

autonomous quality is its ability to sort through not

only a tremendous amount of data but data with

an incredibly wide range of formats and purposes

The platform will be able to unite many different

data sets regarding the same patient (from various

doctors tests specialists etc) to derive coherent

insights while also using data from patients suffering

with similar conditions in different cities states or

even continents Sentrian could be a fix not just for

millions of patients dealing with chronic illness but

for healthcare systems across the globe as they deal

with a new generation of patients

Marketing - Alberttrade

Of course wersquod be remiss to make a list of the top

performers in autonomous AI without mentioning

Albert the worldrsquos first completely autonomous

marketing platform built from the ground up using

AI As modern marketers struggle to manage ever-

growing volumes of consumer data coming from

campaigns run on an ever-expanding number of

channels Albert is freeing marketers to return to the

creative and strategic work they do best

Forrester6 puts the problem faced by todayrsquos advertisers

concisely they must struggle to balance ldquobrand

storytelling audience-based targeting insights

from customer data personalization and customer

experiencerdquo all across far too many digital media

channels and devices And while marketers are racing

to adapt to this new era in media consumers are

already way ahead of them expecting previously

impossible levels of personalization from marketing

campaigns Without a way to efficiently leverage the

increasing amount of data they produce brands will

consistently fail to meet the rising standards of modern

internet users

Albert performs many of the tedious data-centric

tasks that have become far too central to the average

marketerrsquos role After being plugged into a brand

or agencyrsquos tech stack Albert is able to gather

information from across email display social and

search campaigns in order to optimize campaigns on

each channel autonomously executing on what he

learns without the need for much human intervention

With the help of his human operators Albert quickly

helps marketers to find valuable new keywords

maximize the effectiveness of creative material

before fatigue sets in and even identify entirely new

audiences Marketers are now able to achieve the

near 11 level personalization that had before been

impossible all while dedicating more time to drafting

the creative materials that Albert is optimizing

Thatrsquos not to say that marketers lose control of how

their campaigns are planned executed and

optimized Albert only operates within the parameters

set by his human users For example while Albert is

able to use his given budget for a campaign however

he sees fit he cannot exceed it The tool relies on

open collaboration between human and machine

with marketers trusting Albert to only make decisions

that help them reach the campaignrsquos stated goals

and Albert working within the limitations set for him by

those marketers

Like Sentrian Albert takes data from a disparate range

of formats and sources mdash eg Facebook Instagram

YouTube AdWords mdash and easily analyzes them a

task that typically takes entire staffs of data analysts

working around the clock to complete But Albert is

not only able to give recommendations based on

his analyses but base and MAKE decisions on them

completely independent of his operators The result

is increased and accelerated revenue smarter ad

spend investment more individualized customer

experiences and finally more satisfied consumers

As consumers become more and more demanding

Albert is a marketerrsquos best hope for investing the time

and money they need to satisfy them

Finance - NICE Actimize

Another industry where professionals are struggling

to deal with impossible volumes of data is finance

With so much of the worldrsquos wealth existing in digital

formats changing hands billions of times each

day banks are struggling to track financial crimes

like money laundering Itrsquos this kind of risk that can

partially explain why 30 of financial institutions

are planning on investing in AI in the coming years

according to a PwC report1 Companies like NICE

Actimize are seizing that opportunity by creating

smart platforms that can reliably protect banksrsquo

assets

ACTone NICE Actimizersquos financial crime investigation

platform uses AI-enabled RPA to automate many

of the routine tasks involved in rooting out potential

crime such as fetching data from other systems and

prepping cases Over time ACTonersquos AI gets better

and faster at detecting potential crimes completing

the tasks needed to investigate them and improving

the human operatorrsquos decision-making The platform

will cut the time of investigating a single report by up

to 70

ACTonersquos AI component allows it to recognize

the similarities between incidents as they occur

at different times and in different places making

the kinds of connections that human investigators

are often too overworked to make mdash or in many

cases are too subtle for the human eye to catch

Cybercrime tactics are getting increasingly

advanced and banks and finance institutions

are understandably worried that they arenrsquot

properly equipped to deal with this growing and

unpredictable threat ACTonersquos predictive analytics

provides them with a safeguard against that threat

leveraging AI to identify suspicious activity and stop it

at its source

But of course detection is only half the battle when

it comes to stopping financial crime mdash much of it

comes down to properly closing cases against the

perpetrators which takes a great deal of vigilance

and effort ACTonersquos Virtual Workforce feature greatly

reduces the burden placed on investigators by

deploying a team of bots to do many of the tedious

tasks involved in this kind of casework which frees the

human worker to focus their attention on performing

a more accurate investigation

There are few industries more concerned with risk

than finance and as our economy becomes more

and more digitized banks need better smarter

digital resources to mitigate that risk NICE Actimize

is at the forefront of this push to make the digital

economy more secure more predictable and safer

for both banks and consumers to use

Conclusion Looking Forward

AI is a promising solution to many of the problems

that industries across our economy face with

regard to both efficiency and accuracy but itrsquos an

advanced precise tool that shouldnrsquot be wielded

like a blunt instrument Companies that adopt

AI platforms as a set-it-and-forget-it solution will

ultimately be disappointed by their performance

and likely be no better off than the companies that

neglected to adopt in the first place

The companies wersquove highlighted have done their

best to design AI platforms that do much of the work

on their own and integrate easily with a companyrsquos

existing processes but all of them require active

collaboration with their human operators AI is not

an excuse to stop thinking about or working towards

better solutions to the problems we face in our

respective industries mdash itrsquos an opportunity to put new

ideas into practice and to augment our efforts to

achieve things that otherwise would not have been

possible The future of AI rests not with any one of

these platforms but with your ability to put them to

good use

Thatrsquos not to say that marketers lose control of how

their campaigns are planned executed and

set by his human users For example while Albert is

able to use his given budget for a campaign however

he sees fit he cannot exceed it The tool relies on

open collaboration between human and machine

with marketers trusting Albert to only make decisions

that help them reach the campaignrsquos stated goals

and Albert working within the limitations set for him by

those marketers

Like Sentrian Albert takes data from a disparate range

of formats and sources mdash eg Facebook Instagram

YouTube AdWords mdash and easily analyzes them a

task that typically takes entire staffs of data analysts

working around the clock to complete But Albert is

not only able to give recommendations based on

Conclusion Looking Forward

AI is a promising solution to many of the problems

that industries across our economy face with

regard to both efficiency and accuracy but itrsquos an

advanced precise tool that shouldnrsquot be wielded

like a blunt instrument Companies that adopt

AI platforms as a set-it-and-forget-it solution will

ultimately be disappointed by their performance

and likely be no better off than the companies that

neglected to adopt in the first place

The companies wersquove highlighted have done their

best to design AI platforms that do much of the work

on their own and integrate easily with a companyrsquos

existing processes but all of them require active

collaboration with their human operators AI is not

an excuse to stop thinking about or working towards

better solutions to the problems we face in our

respective industries mdash itrsquos an opportunity to put new

ideas into practice and to augment our efforts to

achieve things that otherwise would not have been

possible The future of AI rests not with any one of

these platforms but with your ability to put them to

good use

Introduction Separating AI Trendsetters from the Knockoffs

For a long time the main obstacle to AI adoption

across industries was the notion that the technology

just wasnrsquot ready for business deployment Artificial

intelligence seemed like a good idea but decision-

makers too often shrugged it off as not fully mature

at best and a science fiction-fueled pipe dream at

worst

Today however there are very few who donrsquot

recognize AIrsquos current impact on the economy

and even fewer who donrsquot expect that impact to

deepen in the future But now that AI is fashionable

the challenge for businesses is to separate real

trendsetters offering ldquoautonomousrdquo AI solutions mdash

software or equipment that uses artificial intelligence

to independently make decisions take actions

then report on those decisions and actions mdash from

imitators trying to profit from the trend Many of the

products being billed as AI or machine learning are

knockoffs that only offer automation mdash technology

that is unable to make any decisions that havenrsquot

already been prescribed by their human operators

These imitators arenrsquot likely to drive any real results

for their users and are therefore unlikely to play a

very big role in the development of AI as it transforms

our economy our jobs and our day-to-day life in

the coming years To get a clearer sense of that

future we looked for some of the most innovative

applications of autonomous AI across industries and

took a deeper dive into how their contributions will

likely shape their own sectors as well as the world at

large

All of the AI companies we spoke with are offering

something new and exciting to their respective

spaces automotive robotics marketing healthcare

manufacturing and finance Important factors like

government regulation will have a huge impact on

AIrsquos future direction but for the time being these

innovators offer us the best glimpse of a better more

efficient more autonomous future

Robotics Process Automation - Automation Anywhere

The advance of AI and other technologies is

expanding the possibilities of what can and cannot

be automated Automation is obviously appealing to

enterprises looking to increase their profit margins but

most of them need a solution that can be designed

to fit their specific processes without the need for any

advanced programming on their part That solution

appears to be Robotics Process Automation (RPA) and

the top player in that space is Automation Anywhere

RPA itself merely refers to the use of software to

automate routine tasks that humans typically find too

mundane and repetitive to do efficiently automatically

completing tasks like filling out invoices or making and

emailing meeting transcriptions to attendees Where

it gets really interesting is with the implementation

of AI which allows the robots to not just repeat the

movements prescribed by their programmers but learn

new and more efficient methods based on what they

observe This is where the potential of the technology

truly opens up and Automation Anywhere is one of the

few companies even beginning to scratch the surface

of that potential

The companyrsquos IQ bots do much of the heavy lifting

that previous work process automation technologies

have failed to take on Because other RPA platforms

donrsquot use cognitive technology they can only

automate rather than work autonomously That

means that any data that might inform how the bot

performs a certain job has to be hand-fed to the

platform by human users making their implementation

more difficult and reducing the potential benefits to

be gained from automation in the first place

Automation Anywhere applies its AI to the task of

structuring all the data that other RPA platforms might

miss from semi-structured data like contracts and

invoices to completely unstructured data like emails

instant messages and even video That makes it

possible for them to handle content-centric front-end

work like customer service but these capabilities are

Medical - Sentrian

Yoursquove probably already heard plenty of lofty

prognostications about a future where doctors can

begin to anticipate and treat your illnesses before

you even feel their symptoms but Sentrian is the

company thatrsquos actually closest to making those

fantasies a reality Recognizing a crisis in American

healthcare where more people are living longer lives

and experiencing greater rates of chronic disease

the company is using biosensors and AI to stay two

steps ahead of illnesses so that patients can spend

their lives in the comfort of their homes

Sentrian bills itself as ldquothe first remote patient

intelligence companyrdquo and aims to use its AI to

analyze massive volumes of patient data in order

to more accurately predict when chronically ill

individuals will actually need to be hospitalized Care

providers often donrsquot have the necessary information

to determine which medical problems can be

reversed through a fairly moderate intervention

and when This leads to many unnecessary

hospitalizations excessive medical costs and a

drastic impact on the patientrsquos quality of life

Sentrian aims to fix these problems by bridging the

gap between primary care clinicians and patients

with chronic illness who are living at home As remote

biosensors become both more advanced and

more affordable the company plans to leverage

the massive amount of medical data they produce

by training their AI to do the work of a full-time

clinical team The AI is taking in massive amounts

of information from around the world not only from

biosensors but importantly from the information

reported by patients and doctors All this data is

enabling the AI to detect warning signs in patients

that would normally take a team of doctors to

identify

New technologies have traditionally faced huge

obstacles to adoption in healthcare because of how

strongly regulated the field is with IT professionals

often struggling to connect all the various platforms

that do manage to get FDA approval in ways that are

both efficient and compliant Thatrsquos why the Sentrian

platform is device-and gateway-agnostic which

means that as more devices become approved

and used they can immediately start feeding data

into the platformrsquos AI This will only serve to make its

decisions more informed as more data devices and

patients are plugged into it

Like with Automation Anywhere the Sentrian AIrsquos truly

autonomous quality is its ability to sort through not

only a tremendous amount of data but data with

an incredibly wide range of formats and purposes

The platform will be able to unite many different

data sets regarding the same patient (from various

doctors tests specialists etc) to derive coherent

insights while also using data from patients suffering

with similar conditions in different cities states or

even continents Sentrian could be a fix not just for

millions of patients dealing with chronic illness but

for healthcare systems across the globe as they deal

with a new generation of patients

Robotics Process Automation - Automation Anywhere

The advance of AI and other technologies is

expanding the possibilities of what can and cannot

be automated Automation is obviously appealing to

enterprises looking to increase their profit margins but

most of them need a solution that can be designed

to fit their specific processes without the need for any

advanced programming on their part That solution

appears to be Robotics Process Automation (RPA) and

the top player in that space is Automation Anywhere

RPA itself merely refers to the use of software to

automate routine tasks that humans typically find too

mundane and repetitive to do efficiently automatically

completing tasks like filling out invoices or making and

emailing meeting transcriptions to attendees Where

it gets really interesting is with the implementation

of AI which allows the robots to not just repeat the

movements prescribed by their programmers but learn

new and more efficient methods based on what they

observe This is where the potential of the technology

truly opens up and Automation Anywhere is one of the

few companies even beginning to scratch the surface

of that potential

The companyrsquos IQ bots do much of the heavy lifting

that previous work process automation technologies

have failed to take on Because other RPA platforms

donrsquot use cognitive technology they can only

automate rather than work autonomously That

means that any data that might inform how the bot

performs a certain job has to be hand-fed to the

platform by human users making their implementation

more difficult and reducing the potential benefits to

be gained from automation in the first place

Automation Anywhere applies its AI to the task of

structuring all the data that other RPA platforms might

miss from semi-structured data like contracts and

invoices to completely unstructured data like emails

instant messages and even video That makes it

possible for them to handle content-centric front-end

work like customer service but these capabilities are

more critical to back-office activities4 than many RPA

adopters think All the information it takes to complete

administrative tasks like cross-checking financial

documents and writing form letters may exist in

unstructured formats like scanned PDF files and invoices

While other players in the RPA space are struggling to

seamlessly automate processes with the technology

Automation Anywhere is realizing RPArsquos full potential

Forrester has dubbed Automation Anywhere5 a

leader in the RPA space and itrsquos easy to see why the

company is going the whole nine yards to make sure

their product integrates with any companyrsquos existing

processes mdash no matter their scale or industry

Medical - Sentrian

Yoursquove probably already heard plenty of lofty

prognostications about a future where doctors can

begin to anticipate and treat your illnesses before

you even feel their symptoms but Sentrian is the

company thatrsquos actually closest to making those

fantasies a reality Recognizing a crisis in American

healthcare where more people are living longer lives

and experiencing greater rates of chronic disease

the company is using biosensors and AI to stay two

steps ahead of illnesses so that patients can spend

their lives in the comfort of their homes

Sentrian bills itself as ldquothe first remote patient

individuals will actually need to be hospitalized Care

Marketing - Alberttrade

Of course wersquod be remiss to make a list of the top

performers in autonomous AI without mentioning

Albert the worldrsquos first completely autonomous

marketing platform built from the ground up using

AI As modern marketers struggle to manage ever-

growing volumes of consumer data coming from

campaigns run on an ever-expanding number of

channels Albert is freeing marketers to return to the

creative and strategic work they do best

Forrester6 puts the problem faced by todayrsquos advertisers

concisely they must struggle to balance ldquobrand

storytelling audience-based targeting insights

from customer data personalization and customer

experiencerdquo all across far too many digital media

channels and devices And while marketers are racing

to adapt to this new era in media consumers are

already way ahead of them expecting previously

impossible levels of personalization from marketing

campaigns Without a way to efficiently leverage the

increasing amount of data they produce brands will

consistently fail to meet the rising standards of modern

internet users

Albert performs many of the tedious data-centric

tasks that have become far too central to the average

marketerrsquos role After being plugged into a brand

or agencyrsquos tech stack Albert is able to gather

information from across email display social and

search campaigns in order to optimize campaigns on

each channel autonomously executing on what he

learns without the need for much human intervention

6 Forrester (2016 February) TechRadartrade Marketing And Ad-vertising Technology Q1 2016 - Forrester httpswwwforrestercomreportTechRadar+Marketing+And+Advertising+Technolo-gy+Q1+2016-E-RES115810

With the help of his human operators Albert quickly

helps marketers to find valuable new keywords

maximize the effectiveness of creative material

before fatigue sets in and even identify entirely new

audiences Marketers are now able to achieve the

near 11 level personalization that had before been

impossible all while dedicating more time to drafting

the creative materials that Albert is optimizing

Thatrsquos not to say that marketers lose control of how

their campaigns are planned executed and

optimized Albert only operates within the parameters

set by his human users For example while Albert is

able to use his given budget for a campaign however

he sees fit he cannot exceed it The tool relies on

open collaboration between human and machine

with marketers trusting Albert to only make decisions

that help them reach the campaignrsquos stated goals

and Albert working within the limitations set for him by

those marketers

Like Sentrian Albert takes data from a disparate range

of formats and sources mdash eg Facebook Instagram

YouTube AdWords mdash and easily analyzes them a

task that typically takes entire staffs of data analysts

working around the clock to complete But Albert is

not only able to give recommendations based on

his analyses but base and MAKE decisions on them

completely independent of his operators The result

is increased and accelerated revenue smarter ad

spend investment more individualized customer

experiences and finally more satisfied consumers

As consumers become more and more demanding

Albert is a marketerrsquos best hope for investing the time

and money they need to satisfy them

Finance - NICE Actimize

Another industry where professionals are struggling

to deal with impossible volumes of data is finance

With so much of the worldrsquos wealth existing in digital

formats changing hands billions of times each

day banks are struggling to track financial crimes

like money laundering Itrsquos this kind of risk that can

partially explain why 30 of financial institutions

are planning on investing in AI in the coming years

according to a PwC report1 Companies like NICE

Actimize are seizing that opportunity by creating

smart platforms that can reliably protect banksrsquo

assets

ACTone NICE Actimizersquos financial crime investigation

platform uses AI-enabled RPA to automate many

of the routine tasks involved in rooting out potential

crime such as fetching data from other systems and

prepping cases Over time ACTonersquos AI gets better

and faster at detecting potential crimes completing

the tasks needed to investigate them and improving

the human operatorrsquos decision-making The platform

will cut the time of investigating a single report by up

to 70

ACTonersquos AI component allows it to recognize

the similarities between incidents as they occur

at different times and in different places making

the kinds of connections that human investigators

are often too overworked to make mdash or in many

cases are too subtle for the human eye to catch

Cybercrime tactics are getting increasingly

advanced and banks and finance institutions

are understandably worried that they arenrsquot

properly equipped to deal with this growing and

unpredictable threat ACTonersquos predictive analytics

provides them with a safeguard against that threat

leveraging AI to identify suspicious activity and stop it

at its source

But of course detection is only half the battle when

it comes to stopping financial crime mdash much of it

comes down to properly closing cases against the

perpetrators which takes a great deal of vigilance

and effort ACTonersquos Virtual Workforce feature greatly

reduces the burden placed on investigators by

deploying a team of bots to do many of the tedious

tasks involved in this kind of casework which frees the

human worker to focus their attention on performing

a more accurate investigation

There are few industries more concerned with risk

than finance and as our economy becomes more

and more digitized banks need better smarter

digital resources to mitigate that risk NICE Actimize

is at the forefront of this push to make the digital

economy more secure more predictable and safer

for both banks and consumers to use

Conclusion Looking Forward

AI is a promising solution to many of the problems

that industries across our economy face with

regard to both efficiency and accuracy but itrsquos an

advanced precise tool that shouldnrsquot be wielded

like a blunt instrument Companies that adopt

AI platforms as a set-it-and-forget-it solution will

ultimately be disappointed by their performance

and likely be no better off than the companies that

neglected to adopt in the first place

The companies wersquove highlighted have done their

best to design AI platforms that do much of the work

on their own and integrate easily with a companyrsquos

existing processes but all of them require active

collaboration with their human operators AI is not

an excuse to stop thinking about or working towards

better solutions to the problems we face in our

respective industries mdash itrsquos an opportunity to put new

ideas into practice and to augment our efforts to

achieve things that otherwise would not have been

possible The future of AI rests not with any one of

these platforms but with your ability to put them to

good use
