MBA students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, College of Business Administration have the opportunity to gain valuable experience managing a portfolio of securities. During the four calendar quarters beginning October 1 and concluding September 30, students selected to participate will manage the Haslam Torch Fund or the LaPorte Torch Fund. Combined, these funds are worth more than $1 million.

A friendly competition between the two student groups reinforces the bottom-line impact of each team’s decisions throughout their tenure. Each fund is responsible for four written quarterly reports and various oral presentations.

The Torch Funds are made possible through the generosity of Jim Haslam of Pilot Travel Centers, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Mr. and Mrs. Christopher LaPorte of Coastal Securities, Houston, Texas.

Torch Fund managers are selected each September. Those selected receive:

n a total of three hours of academic credit for their one-year tenure as a manager.

n unlimited access to Bloomberg data terminals.

n the opportunity to interact with fund sponsors, Jim Haslam and the LaPortes, as well as with the Torch Fund Professional Advisory Group, which consists of area investment professionals.
