JFGA Officers 2009

Executive CommitteeIt was another fantastic year for the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta and our entire Jewish community!

Thanks to your generous support, your Federation again led and united Jewish Atlanta in 2008, leveraging community resources, partnering with local and overseas organizations, and convening Atlanta Jews socially and around critical issues.

With your help, JFGA improved the lives of our Jewish brothers and sisters at home and abroad, promoted Jewish identity, education, and culture here in Atlanta, and made important strides to ensure that our community continues to grow and thrive for years to come.

Here are just a few of this year’s highlights:

The Community Campaign 2008 inspired more than 1,000 people to make first-time donations and will allocate more than $18 million

The Legacy Campaign established permanent endowments for our community, accumulating 25 new gifts and approximately $35 million

The Planned Giving and Endowment department stewarded $29 million and distributed more than $24 million to both Jewish and secular organizations through Donor Advised Funds, Supporting Family Foundations, and permanent endowment funds

More than 7,000 Jewish community members attended 55 JFGA events

Five new initiatives — called Outcomes — served and enriched the lives of more than 6,000 Jews here in Atlanta, and in our partnership communities of Minsk, Belarus, in the Former Soviet Union, and Yokneam-Megiddo, Israel

This unique ability to impact every aspect of Jewish Atlanta makes JFGA The Total Package.

Last year, JFGA launched The PJ Library in Atlanta with the support of The Marcus and The Harold Grinspoon Foundations. Through the program, families receive free Jewish

bedtime stories and songs for children up to age seven.

In its first year, Atlanta became the largest PJ Library community in the country, with nearly 3,800 children across 127 zip codes participating, reaching areas of the community where few Jewish services previously existed.

JFGA promotes Jewish identity to Atlantans of all ages.In 2008, more than 100 new parents received Shalom Baby packages that included welcome gifts and resource materials from 28 local Jewish organizations. This year also saw the creation of three Jewish playgroups, with 15–20 kids per group meeting several times throughout the year.

Your Federation funded ten Jewish student clubs which drew a total attendance of more than 500 high school students at area secular public and private high schools.

Federation led two Birthright Taglit Israel trips, helping 34 men and women aged 21–26 make their first trip to the Jewish homeland this year. Federation consistently helps Atlanta send one of the country’s largest delegations and is helping to connect and engage our city’s more than 3,000 Birthright alumni.

Finally, with the Jewish Life section of our web site, ShalomAtlanta.org, we created interactive Jewish experiences with “Ask the Rabbi” and Jewish travel, cooking, and music sections.

A major component of JFGA’s Engagement Outcome, Pathways provides comprehensive resources, services, and programs for interfaith families.

In 2008, 375 people participated in a variety of Pathways programs, including social and educational programs for couples, parents, and grandparents. The more than 500 inquiries greatly exceeded expectations and forced organizers to expand the program to accommodate the requests. To help address this overwhelming need and demand, a multitude of community professionals and lay leaders received training in interfaith outreach efforts.

2008 was a landmark year in our ongoing effort to engage and convene Jewish Atlanta, with more than 7,000 Jewish community members attending 55 JFGA events.

We led and coordinated the community-wide “Israel @ 60” celebrations, and hosted 300 people at a kick-off program featuring three Atlanta rabbis emeriti who made aliyah, followed by a 700 person party featuring the Israeli rock band Hadag Nachash.

The Young Leadership Council (YLC) assumed a singular focus on engagement and developed a seamless array of education and involvement opportunities that resulted in more than 1,600 program attendees and more than 130 new volunteers.

2008 marked Rose Klein’s 50th Anniversary as a Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta employee. In June, more than 100 community members helped Federation celebrate Rose’s accomplishments.

Our Women of Achievement event was a night to remember with more than 800 people attending in recognition of 96 women’s influence across our Jewish community.

It is estimated that one of every four Jewish Atlantans serves in a caregiving role. In its first year, JFGA’s Caregiver Outcome empowered Jews caring for elderly family members and

those with mental, physical, or emotional needs by providing information, transportation, and respite care.

For the fifth year, JFGA coordinated Georgia’s Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORC) Initiative with six sites, which help older adults remain in their homes as long as possible and avoid institutionalization. Participants receive transportation aid, home assistance like yard work and support railing installation, and social activities like Bingo nights to help maintain cognitive function. JFGA leveraged public and private funding, built community partnerships, and improved awareness of the NORC Initiative so that older adults could enjoy their golden years in the comfort of their own homes.

JFGA invests in our local community in ways large and small. For the ninth year, your Federation administered the Health and Welfare Trust, helping Jewish professionals and organizations attain affordable insurance and benefits. Today, the Trust serves 36 Jewish organizations in Atlanta and throughout Georgia, insuring more than 800 employees and their families—a total of over 1,300 lives. The community’s estimated savings from the Trust is more than $1 million since the program’s inception.

On Mitzvah Day 2008, the professionals at JFGA rolled up their sleeves and worked with our affiliate agencies and community institutions for some hands-on experience and a closer look at the great work our partners perform each day. Federation staff moved, boxed, cleaned, delivered, and planted—whatever it took to get the job done.

In its second year, JFGA’s Israel Outcome produced impressive results, creating self-sufficiency through education and employment for Ethiopian-Israeli children, youth, and

their parents.

Our integrated set of programs—coordinated on-site by a Federation staff member—has helped 100 adults and 675 children in Yokneam-Megiddo become integrated into society and move towards independence from Israeli government support.

More than 100 children received personalized study plans and 95 percent of youth participants improved test scores by at least one letter grade thanks to Federation and the support of Atlanta’s Jewish community.

Your Federation reaches across the globe to touch the lives of Jews in need half a world away.

Through our Former Soviet Union Outcome, we provided services, food, medicine, and homecare to more than 2,000 elderly Jews in Minsk, Belarus, who are classified as non-Nazi victims and therefore receive less assistance. We also sent more than 1,500 youth and families to Jewish camps for an opportunity to reconnect and strengthen their Jewish identity.

In Sderot, Israel, over 3,500 Kassam rockets have targeted the civilian population since 2001, an average of at least one per day. In 2008, JFGA provided an emergency allocation of $204,000 to directly fund six programs that helped citizens cope with the attacks, and provided an additional $34,000 that purchased two reinforced bus stops to provide above-ground protection against the rockets. Since the inception of the Israel Emergency Fund in 2006, your Federation has raised over $7 million to help Israelis in times of crisis.

In 2008, JFGA launched a program to create permanent endowments to fund Jewish Atlanta’s ongoing and emergent needs for generations to come. Twenty-five new donors

and families committed more than $35 million.

Through their generosity, these Legacy Society members have passed their values to the next generation and ensured the vibrancy and strength of our Atlanta Jewish community for their children and grandchildren.

This year JFGA continued to take the lead in shaping the future of Jewish Atlanta and addressed our larger community’s more immediate needs.

In preparation for our community’s projected growth, we developed the 20/20 Vision, a community blueprint that will prepare us for the exciting changes to come. As part of this vision, your Federation is looking to establish satellite campuses across Metro Atlanta that bring community organizations together under one roof.

Federation convened 18 community leaders for the Day School Blue Ribbon Committee to find ways to build, strengthen, and make day schools more affordable.

We also helped our community remain safe by coordinating an effort that secured more than $440,000 in federal homeland security grants for 14 of Atlanta’s synagogues and Jewish organizations.

In May of 2008, former President Jimmy Carter published an article that laid much of the blame for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza at the feet of the Israeli government. The next

day, in a response published by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, JFGA Chair Marty Kogon and JFGA President Steve Rakitt offered a strong rebuke of Carter’s charges, identifying Hamas as the true perpetrators of human suffering in the area.

Your Federation is our community’s advocate for Jewish people and causes everywhere.

This year, we lent our voice to issues affecting Jews at home and overseas, strengthened our relationships with Georgia’s lawmakers, and sharpened our focus on improving Israel’s standing in our broader Atlanta community.

In February, Federation hosted 100 community leaders and lawmakers at The Selig Center for our fourth annual Legislative Reception. At the event, our community thanked Georgia’s legislators for supporting important causes and initiatives that impact Jewish Atlanta.

In April, your Federation published “Fifteen Seconds In a City Under Siege,” an op-ed that portrayed the human terror experienced everyday in the southern Israeli town of Sderot, where over 3,500 Kassam rockets have targeted civilians since 2001.

At year’s close, the Community Relations Council (CRC) identified Israel Advocacy—or increasing local awareness, understanding, and appreciation for the state of Israel—as a major focus for 2009.

In May, a group of 38 women participated in the JFGA social action mission to New Orleans to conduct a health fair for those in need. This groundbreaking project was a

first in the city since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. While there, these women also worked to refurbish homes damaged by the storm nearly three years earlier.

In 2008, JFGA furthered its commitment to helping the community at large.

We distributed more than $3.64 million to secular organizations through Donor Advised Funds and Supporting Family Foundations, further cementing Federation’s role as our community’s preeminent resource for investment management and allocation.

In February, we participated in the Atlanta Community Food Bank Hunger Walk, raising more than $75,000—the most among participating faith-based organizations.

Your Federation is already making plans to “Go Green” in 2009 by taking active steps to improve the impact our organization has on the environment. Electronic billing, recycling, and more energy-efficient systems are just a few of the ways we are reducing our carbon footprint. Soon, Federation will share our experiences with our affiliate agencies and the Jewish community at-large to encourage others to take similar steps.

Gerald H. Cohen Community Development Award

Cobi EdelsonCreative, motivated, energetic are the words Cobi Edelson uses to describe herself on her web site, www.cobiedelson.com, and those are the precise adjectives that describe her work with Federation. As co-chair of Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta’s Young Leadership Council Education Committee, Cobi radiates enthusiasm and freely admits to being passionate about Federation. She is also actively involved with the Jewish National Fund

and as an advisor for the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization.

Cobi sees connecting her peers to the Jewish community as her mission, and uses her marketing and communication skills to publicize events and to let young professionals know about volunteer opportunities that are in line with their unique interests.

“With YLC, we try to reach them where they are in their lives,” Cobi says, adding that Federation “is so much more than a fund-raising organization. There are so many ways to be involved and touch lives, and I want people to know about all of the different opportunities.”

Cobi is Creative Director at Binders Art Supplies and Frames as well as a freelance graphic designer. She is a 2003 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. She also studied art history and fashion design in Florence, Italy, where she became proficient in the Italian language. Her freelance graphic design work includes both print and online marketing material for various companies and groups.

Abe Schwartz Young Leadership Award

Stacy Glickman FialkowCommitment to volunteer work in the Jewish community dates from Stacy Glickman Fialkow’s days as a high school student in Israel. Her teacher there, Yossi Katz, inspired her with the challenge, “If you don’t work in the Jewish community, make sure you volunteer.”

Those words have motivated her volunteer work for more than a decade and have kept her active at Jewish Family and Career Services, where she currently serves as president, Ahavath Achim Synagogue, and in her children’s schools. A 1992 graduate of Emory University, Stacy and her husband Emanuel Fialkow have four children, Ethan, Samuel, Sydney Ray, and Isaac. She serves as a Senior Advisor at Fialkow & Co., a local real estate investment firm.

Annual Meeting Honorees

Her initial involvement as a volunteer at Jewish Family and Career Services was helping to create Interact, a young adult division. Later, she was chair of Elder Connections, where she called on her professional training as a geriatric social worker to help develop programs and activities for older adults. She has served on the Board for more than 11 years and on the executive committee for more than 8 of them; and she is currently First Vice President of Jewish Family and Career Services.

Michael ShenkA life-long Atlantan, having moved to the city at the age of one, Michael says he “grew up going to the Community Center down on Peachtree Street,” and attended The Epstein School. His work for the past six years with the National Young Leadership Council of United Jewish Communities gave him an opportunity to travel and see first hand how the money raised by our Federation is used. “My trips to Ethiopia, Cuba, Poland, and several trips to

Israel inspired me to become more involved locally,” Michael says. “I want the Jewish community to be stronger locally by virtue of Jews helping Jews.”

Last year, Michael was the chair of Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta’s Young Leadership Council where he worked on community outreach to strengthen the Young Leadership Council as a brand, and to touch more of our community’s young leaders.

Mary and Max London “People Power” Award

Jack and Rachael RosenbergThroughout their 51 years of marriage, Jack and Rachael Rosenberg have made volunteer work a major part of their lives. As they helped their daughter Marla, now 41, live with a disability, they have seen first hand the needs of the disability community. Together with their older children, Richard and Sharon, they vowed to help develop programs for Marla and for another generation of families. To do this, they worked closely with Jewish Federation of Greater

Atlanta, Jewish Family and Career Services and the Marcus Jewish Community Center. In 2005, the Rosenbergs were one of three couples honored with the Amit Award for paving the way for younger children with disabilities. They were the recipients in 2006 of JF&CS‘s Webb Spraetz Award which was presented at the Larry Bregman Series.

The Rosenbergs, along with Harold and Arlene Koslow, helped found an annual Seder at Congregation Shearith Israel for adults with disabilities. Since 2001, the group has organized a traditional Seder, complete with all the traditional Passover foods and beautifully set tables, for 60 to 75 participants and 20 or more volunteers. Adults with disabilities, including a busload of residents

from Annandale Village in Gwinnett County, attend each year. “A majority of the participants live in group homes. This Seder allows them and their caregivers to learn and experience the true meaning of a Passover Seder.

It is a true celebration with everyone participating in food, prayer, song, emotion, and expression from their hearts including the volunteers,” the Rosenbergs said.

Arlene and Harold KoslowThe idea for a Seder for adults with disabilities came from Arlene Koslow, as she watched Jack and Rachael Rosenberg’s daughter Marla, 41, participate in events at their synagogue, Congregation Shearith Israel. Inspired by Marla, Mrs. Koslow began discussions that led to the annual event that assembles adults with disabilities for a traditional Seder. In addition to their work with the annual Developmental Disabilities Seder at Shearith Israel, the Koslows

remain active year-round as volunteers at their synagogue and in the community. Mr. Koslow has been a member of the Board of Trustees of Congregation Shearith Israel for past 19 years and currently serves as Co-Chairman of Congregation Shearith Israel Cemetery Committee overseeing three Congregation Shearith Israel sections at Greenwood, Crestlawn, and Arlington. He previously served as member of the Federation Board of Trustees. Mrs. Koslow is Co-Chair of Congregation Shearith Israel Chesed Society, member of the Board of the Cohen Home, and past recipient of the Women of Achievement Award for Congregation Shearith Israel.

Brenda FiskeAs Chief Marketing Officer for Jewish Family and Career Services (JFCS), Brenda Fiske has used the tagline “Tools for Living,” to take a marketing vision and translate it into the real world of providing services for thousands of people throughout metro Atlanta.

The branding campaign has helped the community understand the organization and what it does, promoting the idea that JF&CS has appropriate services for the entire population. The idea behind the campaign is to create an image for the agency that is positive and to promote a wellness theme. The vision is of a place to come for positive growth and life enrichment. “You don’t have to be in a crisis for us to be relevant,” Ms. Fiske said.

Annual Meeting Honorees (continued)

Jewish Family and Career Services is comprised of more than 40 different programs from adoption to elder care, literally serving the community at every step of life. Development of the theme “Tools for Living” was followed by a color palette and Web site design that allows each program of JF&CS to brand its own services and still be a part of the overall family.

Ms. Fiske has been with JF&CS for almost 10 years. Her previous experience includes Vice President of Marketing for the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, Piedmont Physicians Marketing Manager, and 12 years of work with major Atlanta agencies.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Betty Ann JacobsonVolunteer and community involvement started early for Atlanta native Betty Ann Jacobson, who began working with the youth division of Federation when she was 16. “I came from a family of people who were involved in the community,” Mrs. Jacobson recalls, telling how she sold War Bonds when she was at Girls High School during World War II, and how she and her friends would “take a street and go door to door” to raise money for our Federation.

Reading from a newspaper clipping from the late ’40s, she said the paper called her friends the “Coverall Girls” and praised the group of young women who “swarmed the city” to make house calls to ask for donations. “That was long before we got so technical with computers and cards,” she explained.

Mrs. Jacobson has spent a lifetime of service to her community, and watched both Atlanta and the Jewish community grow tremendously. She recalls serving as chair of numerous fund-raising committees, culminating in her election in 1986 as the first woman president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta. “I broke the barrier,” she said with a smile.

At that time, Atlanta was growing rapidly, and she worked hard to involve more new residents in Federation work. “We used to be the same people doing the same jobs all the time. My goal was to bring in a lot of different people and touch their lives. I wanted to involve people from all over the city. In the early days, there were a few Jewish communities near synagogues in town, and all of a sudden, we had congregations from Riverdale to Alpharetta.”

Mrs. Jacobson grew up as a member of The Temple, and has remained active there as a board member and officer. She served as president of the Birney PTA (now the Girls School of Atlanta), and was a Girl Scout leader for seven years. She also worked with the United Way, and was honored with the highly prestigious YWCA Woman of Achievement Award in 1987.

Calling herself “very lucky,” Mrs. Jacobson is grateful to have had the opportunity to serve in the community and “to work with so many wonderful people.”

Mrs. Jacobson and her husband, the late Harvey Jacobson, have three children: Joe Jacobson, Nancy Freedman, and the late Susan Goldberg. She is the proud grandmother of seven.
