THE GOSPEL (GOOD NEWS)
“Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in
which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached
to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also
received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried,
that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures . . .” -1 Corinthians
15:1–4
What is the Gospel? The word gospel simply means “ good news.” The central mes-
sage of the Bible is the gospel, or good news, about the person and work of Jesus Christ. In
1 Corinthians 15:1–4, Paul provides the most succinct summary of the gospel: the man Je-
sus is also God, or Christ, and died on a cross in our place, paying the penalty for our sins;
three days later He rose to conquer sin and death and give the gift of salvation to all who
believe in Him alone for eternal life. The great reformer Martin Luther rightly said that, as
sinners, we are prone to pursue a relationship with God in one of two ways. The first is reli-
gion and the second is the gospel. The two are antithetical in every way. Religion says that
if we obey God He will love us. The gospel says that it is because God has loved us through
Jesus that we can obey. Religion says that the world is filled with good people and bad peo-
ple. The gospel says that the world is filled with bad people who are either repentant or un-
repentant. Religion says that you should trust in what you do as a good moral person. The

gospel says that you should trust in the perfectly sinless life of Jesus because He alone is
the only good and truly moral person who will ever live. The goal of religion is to get from
God such things as health, wealth, insight, power, and control. The goal of the gospel is
not the gifts God gives, but rather God as the gift given to us by grace. Religion is about
what I have to do. The gospel is about what I get to do. Religion sees hardship in life as
punishment from God. The gospel sees hardship in life as sanctifying affliction that re-
minds us of Jesus’ sufferings and is used by God in love to make us more like Jesus. Re-
ligion is about me. The gospel is about Jesus. Religion leads to an uncertainty about my
standing before God because I never know if I have done enough to please God. The
gospel leads to a certainty about my standing before God because of the finished work of
Jesus on my behalf on the cross. Religion ends in either pride (because I think I am better
than other people) or despair (because I continually fall short of God’s commands). The
gospel ends in humble and confident joy because of the power of Jesus at work for me, in
me, through me, and sometimes in spite of me.
Now From the Rector
Lent and The Good News It seems to me that as we enter the season of Lent a danger we face is letting it be just an expression of Anglican (liturgical) tradition and not a deeply spiritual (Gospel) in-terior experience of searching for God in our brokenness. We stand before God as sinful human beings in need of Christ’s forgiveness and love. The GOOD NEWS is that we have not been left to our own designs but can receive from God the power to become his adult children. We don’t have to create our own future or redeem our broken past. Christ has taken all the burden of sin from us that we might believe in him and be transformed by the Holy Spirit into people who are humble and confident in God’s grace. Lent is an im-portant time to reflect on our faith and determine where we are not participating fully in grace in ways that lead to abundant life. To do this we must make moments to focus on God and his will for us. Traditionally (and not all tradition is bad) we do this by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial, and by reading and medi-tating on God’s Word. (The Book of Common Prayer, page 265) It also helps to be regu-lar at Church and to participate in the ministries of Saint James. I hope that everyone has a GOOD LENT; that is, we make the most of deepening and growing in our relationship to God in Christ Jesus.

LENT at Saint James 2014
We are having a Pre-Lenten Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, March 2 after both services. A free will of-
fering will be taken to cover the cost, and the remaining funds will be given to the Goshen Food Pantry.
We could use your help in the kitchen. Please see Father Carl.
Ash Wednesday is approaching on March 5th, with two services at 12 noon and 7:30 p.m.
Stations of the Cross will be on Friday Nights in Lent at 7:30 p.m. This is a reflective service that incorpo-
rates both corporate and personal prayer in the context of a traditional Lenten devotion from the Catholic
side of our Anglican tradition.
Lent Madness is a parish-wide activity which seeks a fun, engaging way for
people to learn about the men and women comprising the Church's Calendar
of Saints. Lent Madness began in 2010 as the brainchild of the Rev. Tim
Schenck. Tim came up with this unique Lenten devotion to combining his
love of sports with his passion for the lives of the saints, Lent Madness was
born on his blog "Clergy Family Confidential." The format is straightfor-
ward: 32 saints are placed into a tournament-like single elimination bracket
(similar to March Madness). Each pairing remains open for a set period of time and people vote for their
favorite saint. 16 saints make it to the Round of the Saintly Sixteen; eight advance to the Round of the Elate
Eight; four make it to the Faithful Four; two to the Championship; and the winner is awarded the coveted
Golden Halo.
We will again hold our own Saint James Tournament. It is $5.00 to play (see John Strobl for details). The
winner will get to choose which one of the three Church items to fund with the money raised: VBS, Com-
munity Dinner or Sunday School. The winner will also receive a crown and a gift! If you are looking for a
Lenten devotion that is fun, educational, occasionally goofy, and always joyful, join the Lenten Madness
journey.

STEWARDSHIP 2014
Practicing Faithful Generosity
The Lenten season has arrived with it’s beginning on Ash Wednesday, March 5,2014. During
Lent we should all take time to look at our lives, who we have been, who we are, and who we are be-
coming. We so often become so habitual in the routines of our lives, that we find ourselves shut off
from what is new, what is challenging, what pushes us to the edge, what causes us to get excited. Lent
offers each of us the opportunity to clear our minds and unlock the doors that keep us safe and stuck in
the routines that are so familiar to us. Take time during Lent to consider how we are closed off to new
experiences and begin to open up the walls that enclose us. It is a process of letting go of one’s own
life to a life of others. We must let go, sacrifice, for our own sake. It must be for and only for others.
When our hearts have grown in compassion and love, we are willing to relinquish what seems im-
portant to our own preservation and happiness in order that someone else’s life may be made richer by
our own loss. Lent invites us to move to the edge of our own self-satisfaction and step into the avenue
of self- sacrifice. By this process we will jump into the blackness of sacrifice and there find the light
that leads to a joyous Easter. I ask everyone to keep their pledge up to date. It is never too late to make
a commitment to support St. James for 2014. Give of your time and talent for the Community dinner
held the last Saturday of the month.
