The Town Crier January 2018
By Elaine Rice
Dannemora Free Library
February Month of
Special Events
Although a local library is an
inviting friend every day,
Dannemora Free Library
plans to celebrate February
2018 as “Love Your
Library” month.
In addition to February
being a fine-free month at
DFL, area residents are
encouraged to visit any time
to use the Maker Space to
create a valentine or work on
some other project.
Specifically during the school
break, on Tuesday,
February 20th, individuals
and/or families might visit
the library to purchase and
make a book-themed ceiling
tile or to make a donation
and take advantage of a mini
photo session (a family or
individual photo taken in
front of a Love-Your-Library
themed backdrop and emailed
to you the next day) or to
merely stop by to browse and
have a snack.
Love Your Library others to enjoy? You can
showcase that title by
decorating a ceiling tile,
possibly focusing on a theme,
or a character, or an episode
from that book. In addition to
adding a decorative touch to
the library, your suggested
title and creativity may spark
another’s interest, as well as
contribute to a library
fundraiser. Paint and ceiling
tiles, donated by Haley
Lumber, are available at the
library. Suggested donation
for this individual or family
project is $25.
Coffee, Chocolate, and
Chat continues with 2018
sessions planned for the third
Thursday of the month at
6:00 pm. Scheduled
presentations include:
January 18 - Larry Seney
- Native Artifacts.
February 15 - Leslie Ranger,
Edward Jones Representative
- Basic Investments
March 15 - Master Gardener
- Spring Gardening Ideas
January 2, the DFL Book
Club will be discussing The
Last Runaway by Tracy
Chevalier and February 6,
Into the Wilderness, by Sara
Donati. New members
welcome.
What’s Been
Happening at DFL?
This past summer's Building
a Better World reading
program was a huge success.
Any idea of how many books
were read by those who
participated? Not 100...Not
300...Not even 500… 616
books were enjoyed by the
young people involved.
Readers and their families
should be so proud!
In mid-November, Saranac
Central Middle and High
School Library Club
members moved the books
from the two long book
shelves in the computer
room. The next day, five
volunteers from Plattco
Corporation (in celebration
of Plattco’s 120th
Anniversary) disassembled
those shelves, reconfigured
their locations, and restocked
the shelves. Sincere
appreciation goes out to
those volunteers. Truly, this
move could not have been
done without their efficient,
knowledgeable, and
congenial help.

This law also stipulates that anyone who places or permits to be placed upon any highway any material which interferes with the safe use of the highway shall immediately remove the same or cause it to be removed. This includes snow!
Submitted by Michele Petrashune Town Board With winter comes the need for plowing, shoveling, and snow blowing of driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots. Article 1219 of New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law makes it illegal to plow, shovel, or blow snow into a street or highway. This law also covers other items likely to pose a hazard to motorists,

Thank you for your cooperation.
If you are a homeowner and hire a person to plow your driveway, and you permit the snow to be plowed into the road, you could be cited under this law. Even if the easiest way to rid your driveway, parking lot, or sidewalk of snow is to put it into the street or road and hope the next pass of the plow will take care of it, take note of this law and find another place to put the snow.

Just today, a person asked if I had any photos of the one-room school house on Bucks Corners and Picketts Corners. Is there anyone out there with a photo they are willing to share? A scan is totally acceptable, or even a photo of a photo. Then, there is the one about an 1812 musket being fired by Charles Turner in his backyard in Redford. The most interesting question was an email from Chris Roefaro asking for information for her mother. Her mother, June Barber, was in the 1954 Saranac graduating class. She said this was the first graduating class from Saranac! She has many warm memories of her class of only 12 students. She was wondering if any of her classmates were still in the area and if they would have any photos or memories to share. I researched June Barber’s background and found her parents were Gilbert and Helen and she had a younger brother, Donald. They lived on the Bucks Corners Road. I know there are still Barbers living on the road. I often get questions for stories of the beginning of Saranac School. There is very little

Town Board
Congratulations and good
luck to the elected and re-
elected officials representing
our Town and County. I can
hardly believe that the past
four years have gone by so
quickly. It has been my
privilege and honor to serve
the people of the Town of
Saranac. As I reflect and
consider the goals I had as a
candidate four years ago, I
am very proud of the work
completed. I wish all goals
would have been met, but
many challenges exist in
terms of facilitation of
government and, in some
cases, we have come up
short.
Improvements and offerings
we have made at our Town
Park and in our Recreation
Department are the product
of hard work done by Cullen
Coryer, Jackie Carter, Jake
Liberty and Rick St. Louis,
along with great support by
our Town Board. There is
also tremendous appreciation
for our community members
who have supported the
changes and improvements
made.
The investment has been
made in our pool and our new
playground, and with help
from the County and Grant
Writer Laurie Williams, we
enter our third summer of
Fitness in the Park, and now
have pickle ball courts, as
well. Michele Petrashune
volunteered her time to help
with the initial setup up of
Fitness in the Park. We have
purchased kayaks and Cullen
has provided a learning
opportunity for our youth on
the Saranac River, and Tracy

Dance in the Rain Healing “Ms. Sue” Delamarter
Wednesday 3:45- 5:15 pm
Chakradance is self-healing, similar to yoga meditation, with dance. As facilitator, I narrate the dance to help focus on the area and color of the energy center we are working on.
If you cannot sit on the floor or stand for long periods, you may
sit in a chair during the meditation, mandala art, or dance. Visit Facebook at
Danceintherainhealing and check out a Chakradance video and stay updated on the class
schedule. If you plan to attend, please contact me at least one day prior to class (so I have enough handouts and equipment) at [email protected] or text 518-897-6148. Please bring a yoga pillow if you have one. $20 per class or 10 classes for $160 (a $40 savings). Your first class is free to see if this is something you enjoy. Classes run when Saranac School District is in session and will be cancelled for a Snow Day. Please contact me with any questions.
There is nothing he could not
fix or was afraid to tackle.
We would not have been able
to make these improvements
without his input.
I would also like to thank
Jake Liberty for his
dedication in making so
many positive changes to our
Park. Truly appreciate.
When elected in 2014,
Former Supervisor Joe
Gerardi hoped to bring back
the Town Crier after longtime
editor Joyce Ryan had
retired a few years earlier. I
was so proud to be able to ask
my friend, Nancy Dow, if she
would be interested in taking
on this role. Nancy has done
a fantastic job bringing her
enthusiasm and organization
to our Town Crier. She is a
volunteer who spends many
hours making sure issues of
the Crier are ready for our
residents. I know I echo the
sentiments of so many when
I say thank you to Nancy!
Next summer will be the fifth
year we have hosted a
Farmers Market on the

to our dedicated farmers for
giving our residents an

A thank you to our many
dedicated employees of the
Town of Saranac. I would

opportunities for adult

also upgraded our baseball
field with the help from
Athletic Director Brent
Denis and the school.
The Town has an incredible
team in Cullen and Jackie.
Cullen worked extremely
hard securing the funding for
our new playground. His
dedication is a tribute to the
legacy of his family who has
had such a long term impact
on our town’s recreation.
Jackie has made massive
improvements to the
organization of our youth
teams. She has also
established an online
presence, making signups a
bit easier for busy parents.
A thank you as well to Brent
Cringle for his many years of
serving the Recreation
Department.
There are more exciting
opportunities for the future as
Councilman Jerry Delaney
has worked with
Assemblyman Billy Jones to
provide for further
improvements for our Park in
an upcoming grant. Our
County Legislator Patty
Waldron was extremely
helpful with all of our
improvements. A thank you
to all the Board members
who donated their time
making sure the pool and
park upgrades happened. It
was not an easy journey;
many shoulders carried that
weight.
Rick St. Louis is such an
incredible asset to our town. I
would like to personally
thank him for answering any
question or request I have had
over the past four years.

Birth Circle
Birth is powerful and intense. No matter your experience, it is life-changing. Birth Circles are a great opportunity to connect with other families and process your birth experience. This is also a place to make plans for an upcoming birth, have questions answered and share ideas.
Come join us for this free event. For more information, contact Sarah Vaillancourt, Doula at [email protected]
What is a Doula?
A Birth Doula is a skilled, non-medical birth attendant, providing non-clinical physical, emotional, and psychological support to birthing mothers and their partners. A birthing couple is an expert on their preferences; a doula is an expert on birth. Hired by the couple, research shows that birth doulas providing continuous labor support reduce the rates of induction, epidural use, and cesarean sections. Couples who experience birth with doula support report higher rates of birth satisfaction and experience shorter labors. When in labor, it can be challenging to remember the questions to ask, the choices you’ve made, that you are strong. A doula’s job is not to speak for you, but to provide the support and reassurance you need to advocate for yourself. The doula can suggest different laboring positions and provide physical support and comfort. In short – the presence of a doula during your birth will improve your birth outcome – whatever your birth plans may be.
Jaclyn Carter and Cullen Coryer Recreation Department
As we attempt to stay warm now that the throes of winter are upon us, we would like to reminisce about the warmer days of fall. By all accounts, Soccer season in Saranac was a success. The Recreation Department would like to thank the following individuals for their countless hours and unwavering dedication to our youth: Rick St. Louis – he will deny his importance to our program, but we know the truth!- Travis Cayea, Alivia Waldon, Scott Petrashune, Heather Strack, Dustin Blair, Amber Liberty, Bridget LaPier, Jenn Friel, Shannan Wood, and Wendy Rascoe. These folks stepped up to coach our tiny humans and did a phenomenal job. Jenna Reil, Pacey Couture, Peyton Couture, Nora Canning, and Logan Fournia, Saranac High School students, did our officiating. If this is the future, it looks bright because of their efforts!
Basketball season is in full swing with over 90 kids playing and learning the sport. Come check out a game, Saturday mornings at Saranac Elementary School! As we look toward spring and warmer weather, keep an eye on the Recreation Facebook page, as well as the Town Website regarding baseball, softball, T-ball, fitness in the park, kayaking, and swimming lessons sign-ups. Our priority is to increase the use of the online sign-up forms for activities, found at Townofsaranac.com. Recognizing that not everyone has access, we continue to hold evening sign-up events. One of our major goals is to be paperless and we look forward to finding ways to make that happen.
Our last thank you goes out to our Town Board; specifically, Dan Carter, who has been instrumental in park improvements and steadfast in his vision for our youth. He, along with Jerry Delaney and Michele Petrashune, have had their hands in great things. It is with their support and dedication that all this greatness has been made possible, and, should you see them, a thank you goes a long way. Questions, concerns, ideas… please reach out to us. Wishing you a wonderful winter.
Hale and farewell: Congratulations to Jim Waldron and Jim Facteau for their successful elections; both bring past experience to the 2018 Board and I look forward to working with both. Congratulations to Michele Petreshune for her successful re-election and another four years of service. She works hard for Town good and I hope to continue our working relationship. Farewell to Daniel Carter, who did not seek another term. The Town has lost a hardworking, thoughtful member of this Board. Dan made it a point to be as informed on all issues coming up for Board action as possible. You not only knew where Dan stood, but he could articulate the reasons for his position. Dan was a strong proponent for modernizing and maintaining the Bowen Road Park and Pool. He was also a leading supporter of the Recreation Department and advocate for the continued upgrading of the Highway Department’s plow equipment. I wish Dan best of luck in his future endeavors and I hope, when the timing is right, he will consider another term of service.

As I look back at my two years in office and the tremendous learning curve I have gone through, I am grateful to Joe Gerardi for taking time to introduce me to the many projects and issues I would be working on when I took office in 2016. I am grateful to the Board for patiently guiding me in the process of Town Government. I am indebted to Patti Waldron, our County Legislator, for her support. I would be remiss not to point out other important people who have assisted me: Patti LaMora, who puts up with my quirky ways and Rick St. Louis, who just gets it done. This town is blessed to have hard working people who know their jobs and, with little supervision, go about their work for the betterment of the Town of Saranac. Finally, to our Crier Editor, Nancy Dow, thank you for being a positive voice for our Town.
The list of issues Joe and I went over in 2015 included exploring ways to upgrade the Highway Department’s fleet of plow trucks, Broadband expansion, the website, Standish water upgrade, upgrading our records storage area, possible expansion of natural gas along Ganong Drive, and the challenge of True Brook/Ganong, McCutcheon and Dashnaw bridges. So, after two years how have we done? The Board has bought one new truck last year and is in the process of completing a bid to build another truck in 2018. Broadband has expanded to the hamlet of Standish and the town is waiting for results of the next round of support from Albany to expand broadband to the rest of Saranac. Jackie Carter has
accepted the position of web master and is updating and improving our Town website. Standish water upgrade hit a snag when all bids received were almost double the budgeted cost. The Town has applied to the Community Development Block Grant program for additional funds. The Town successfully applied for and received a New York State Education Department Grant to inventory town records, set up a Record’s Storage Management Policy and build to State standards a storage area for all Town records. This project is 95% complete, with only final construction of the store room to be completed. NYSEG has completed the Ganong Drive Expansion of natural gas. Of the three bridges, Dashnaw Road remains a work-in-progress. I continue to explore funding assistance. Keith Cringle and I are researching the possibility of installing a box culvert to satisfy County and State requirements. A reason for looking back is to begin planning for the future. The following are 2018 goals for your Supervisor Goal 1: To report both the Standish water project and Broadband expansion projects have been successfully funded and construction of both will begin in the spring. Goal 2: Address Highway Department equipment needs. Goal 3: Continue work to develop the Town website as the go-to place for current information about Town happenings. Goal 4: Review the Comprehensive Plan of 2011, check progress and adjust the Plan, as needed. I will begin contacting former Project Advisory Committee members and others to set up meetings in the early part of 2018. Goal 5: Solve the Dashnaw Bridge problem.

Sunday, March 4, 2018 at 3:00 pm Saranac Methodist Church Suggested Donation $15 The acoustic jazz ensemble, Rhythm Future Quartet has a straightforward agenda: to keep the spirit of Gypsy jazz alive and expanding in today’s musical universe. The virtuosic foursome, named for a Django Reinhardt tune, offers up a newly minted sound, influenced by the classic Hot Club of France, yet wholly contemporary. Led by violinist Jason Anick and guitarist Olli Soikkeli, the quartet performs dynamic and lyrical arrangements of both Gypsy jazz standards and original compositions that draw upon diverse international rhythms and musical idioms. With Max O’Rourke on second guitar and Greg Loughman on bass, Rhythm Future is dedicated to expanding the boundaries of a vital musical genre. Jason Anick, an award-winning composer and one of the youngest professors at the esteemed Berklee College of Music in Boston, has shared the stage with an array of artists including Grammy award winning guitarist John Jorgenson, Stevie Wonder, The Jim Kweskin Jug Band, and Tommy Emmanuel. Olli Soikkeli (coined “the Finnish boy wonder”) recently made the move from Scandinavia to New York City, where he quickly became a top call guitarist in the bustling Brooklyn jazz scene. He has performed alongside rising star Cyrille Aimee, world-renowned Gypsy guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg, Bucky Pizzarelli, and many others. Max O’Rourke was the winner of the 2015 Saga Award from DjangoFest Northwest, and at 19 has already toured/recorded with many of the top American Gypsy Jazz musicians including John Jorgenson and Gonzalo Bergara. Greg Loughman is a top call bassist in Boston and has been heard with such luminaries as Sheila Jordan, Curtis Fuller, and George Garzone. “Rhythm Future Quartet breaks new ground for Gypsy jazz” ~The Boston Globe “Jason Anick is a rising star in the world of jazz violin” ~Downbeat Magazine “Rhythm Future Quartet have rocketed the music into the future by incorporating multiple influences…teaming it with their own virtuosity and playing it all with a joyful abandon that is downright infectious” ~Huffington Post “Olli Soikkeli is a riveting Finnish guitarist who combines astonishing dexterity and speed with pure soul in a way that places him among the worthiest current day successors to the legacy of the great Django” ~The Wall Street Journal

Clinton County Friends of Extension 2017
Dr. George Palmer has been a member of our Agricultural Committee for many years, is a member of the Clinton County Fair Board, and an advocate of the 4-H program. He is an incredible asset with his
knowledge and willingness to provide information and support for 4-H staff, helping our 4-H participants reach their full potential. He has
been on our Board of Directors and has volunteered countless hours to Extension and its programs.
Board President Rod Sherman and Dr. George Palmer with Executive Director Mary P. Breyette looking on.
Drs. Marty and Rich Frost, representing Chapel Hill Foundation, accept their Friends of Extension recognition with Rod Sherman and Jolene Wallace looking on.
Master Gardner Program
Chapel Hill Foundation has made it possible for Master Gardener volunteers to bring gardening to the youngest and oldest of Clinton County residents with their very generous funding of our program. We have been able to introduce
youngsters to the basics of growing healthy foods, pollination, and protecting the environment, and make gardening possible again for those of us who are no longer able to perform gardening tasks the way we once did.
Their contributions have enabled us to reach thousands of our residents who otherwise would not have these opportunities.
New Volunteers
The Clinton County Office of Cornell Cooperative Extension is pleased to welcome six new Master Gardener Volunteers who finished their training in November and are gearing up to work with the public in 2018. If you have any programs you would like to propose, contact Jolene at 518 - 561 - 7450 or [email protected].
Interesting Ideas? We tailor our programs to our audience and work with
people of all ages and abilities. It may be reading a
book to preschoolers about insects, how vegetables grow, pollination, or any other
garden or environment related topic, followed by a
hands-on project. It may be building and installing a
raised bed to enable folks living in senior housing, who
find it difficult to bend or kneel, to garden comfortably once again.
We are always open to suggestions—don’t hesitate to call.
