Jake Eshelman ’11MAJOR: Classical Studies Writer, Designer, and Skateboard Crafter

When Jake Eshelman describes his life as “hectic, very hectic,” he’s not kidding: Jake is a writer, editor, artist, designer, woodworker, craftsman, musician, photographer, and—in homage to age-old handcrafted models—skateboard creator. In 2013, Eshelman launched Side Project Skateboards (www.sideprojectskateboards.com), a meticulously designed and executed set of 18 handmade boards. The eye-catching collection has led to collaborations with New York design firm Grungy Gentlemen and Jamboree, a London menswear boutique. “I’ve always had an artistic, creative side,” Eshelman says, and his handcrafted projects have lead him to “being in a studio, getting sawdust all over me, making something that I was proud of.” Combining unique woodworking with his writing and designing career, Jake embodies a liberal arts mindset. Fortunately, he chose Trinity for his college education: “I was looking for something completely new and adventuresome.” He also credits one semester in a public speaking class as “one of the most important personal and professional experiences I’ve had, ever.”

Ana Unruh Cohen ’96MAJOR: ChemistrySenior Policy Advisor, Washington, D.C.

Ana Unruh Cohen was one of Trinity’s first Rhodes Scholars and holds a doctorate in geochemistry from Oxford University. Following her graduation from Oxford, she accepted a science and technology fellowship through a program with the American Association for the Advancement of Science that sends scientists to Capitol Hill. She joined the office of U.S. Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) for four years.Unruh Cohen then worked in environmental policy at the Center for American Progress, a nonpartisan research and educational institute. Currently she works in Washington as a senior policy advisor with a focus on environmental policy.Unruh Cohen strives to make science relevant to the public and to policymakers.

“Trinity showed me that science was just the foundation of an incredible career,” Unruh Cohen says. “I’ve found myself in policy jobs because my strength is communicating technical and scientific issues to the broader public. A lot of that comes straight out of my liberal arts education, where I learned to think critically and communicate effectively.”

Trinity students are engaged in the classroom, of course. But they may be even busier outside of it. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved, make friends, exercise your talents, have fun, serve others, be active, and maybe even learn a thing or two. You’ll find a wealth of things to do on campus—and there is even more to do in San Antonio.

HallympicsOne of Trinity’s most beloved traditions, Hallympics is our annual res-hall-versus-res-hall intramural competition. For one week, residence hall teams go head-to-head in sports like soccer, basketball, flag football, and a trivia bowl.

Outdoor RecreationTrinity’s Outdoor Recreation (O-Rec) leads groups of Trinity students on adventures across the country whether they are expert mountaineers, or have never been inside a tent. In the past, we’ve camped in Big Bend National Park, surfed in the Gulf of Mexico, caved underneath Alamo Heights, hang-glided over Canyon Lake, and backpacked through the Guadalupe Mountains.

One of the great things about San Antonio is that many people notice it has a small-town feel, even though it is the 7th largest city in America. Our campus is a stone’s throw away from the heart of downtown San Antonio, which allows the Trinity community to experience arts events and festivals, Fiesta celebrations, and farmers markets at the Pearl.

San Antonio is one of the fastest growing cities in America with a booming economy, thanks to a demand for medical, biomedical and biotechnology, energy, manufacturing, tourism, technology, and military sectors. In January 2015, San Antonio was listed as one of the top 52 global travel destinations by The New York Times. San Antonio was ranked No. 36 on this list, the only city in the state of Texas to be listed.
