The Trumpet From the pen of Pastor Mark... Dear Holy Trinity Faithful, As we transition into Lent, mindful of the path to the cross our Lord chose for us, and his incredible gift of grace to us, lets also give thanks humbly for the many ways in which weve been blessed in our lives, in our families, in our congregation, and throughout the world. Lent often includes acts like fasting, prayer, and penitence. These are meant not as arbitrary duties to check off like a list, but to bring us back and closer to God. Their purpose is relational, so that our overarching Lenten discipline might be to create in me a clean heart oh God, and renew a right spirit within me(Psalm 51:10). Let us walk nearer to God together. GOOD NEWS CORNER/COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS! Last month I included a new Good News Cornerin my article for us to count our blessings and celebrate some wins. So lets get right to it! BLESSING NUMBER 1: We welcome our long-awaited associate pastor, Bonnie Lanyi, who will be serving a ¾ time call and specialize in areas such as pastoral care, teaching and preaching. She has a heart for all ages, including our youth and young adults. As she shares Gods love with us, lets also share our love and warm welcome with Pastor Bonnie. Her first sermon will be February 29/March 1 st , and we celebrate Gods call with a service of installation here at Holy Trinity on March 8 th at 3:00 pm! Come be a part of this special new beginning! BLESSING NUMBER 2: After many years of hopes and dreams from many long-time members and even back to Pastor Martins call, our columbarium is not only paid for but now fully completed! We celebrated this full-circle addition to our church home with a brief service of dedication immediately following our 7:30 pm Ash Wednesday service. We are glad you could be a part of this historic event for our church! BLESSING NUMBER 3: Mortgage! With regular payments plus additional mortgage reduction payments, we began 2019 with a balance of around $515,000. Now as of this writing, with additional payments, mortgage reduction offerings, and significant capital campaign contributions, our current balance is down to $395,500! Thank you to all who have given, and thanks be to God! Now lets get it even one more step closer to zero this year! BLESSING NUMBER 4: After a drop in giving during the early fall, followed by a strong congregational stewardship response weekend after weekend as we approached year end, we ended up finishing 2019 solidly in the black, with more contributions than expenditures for the year. This follows 2018, which was also in the black. When you consider our mortgage pay down and overall capital campaign contributions (and resulting building improvements!) on top of this, we certainly bring some great momentum into the New Year and the new decade! Thank you Lord, for all our blessings. Stay tuned for more good news next month! The Trumpet

From the pen of Pastor Mark...

Dear Holy Trinity Faithful, As we transition into Lent, mindful of the path to the cross our Lord chose for us, and his incredible gift of grace to us, let’s also give thanks humbly for the many ways in which we’ve been blessed in our lives, in our families, in our congregation, and throughout the world. Lent often includes acts like fasting, prayer, and penitence. These are meant not as arbitrary duties to check off like a list, but to bring us back and closer to God. Their purpose is relational, so that our overarching Lenten discipline might be to “create in me a clean heart oh God, and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). Worship Attendance through 02/23

A Message from our Church Council President: Dear Friends in Christ: My letter this month has been fun to write, because I get to start by reporting that giving is up again for January just as it was for December as well. Lily in the office is still finishing up the accounting and we will get numbers out soon, but for now all I have to say is THANK YOU! No matter how much you give, please take a moment to remember that you really are making a difference in people’s lives and pat yourself on the back just a little.

Your gifts are helping feed children who need help (Blessings in a Backpack), serving meals to the homeless (MUST Ministries), helping our youth grow spiritually on mission trips, sponsoring several inspiring music ministries that visitors inevitably comment on, and so much more. And in this spirit of thanks, I’d like to take a moment to outline a couple of the high points about indicating how you want your gifts applied on your offering envelopes. It’s kind of a prosaic topic, but it’s also important to us as good stewards of your offerings to make sure we understand how you want your gifts applied.

The first, and most common designation, is gifts to be applied to the general fund. Gifts to the general fund aren’t designated for any

particular purpose but are used to fulfill the church’s operating budget as needed. Because most giving is for the general fund, any offerings with no specified purpose are automatically treated as being for the general fund.

The next most common area of giving is for your pledge to the Capital Campaign. When you contribute to the Campaign, the office staff make a separate record and credit you with this giving against the amount you pledged for the Campaign. There’s a little nuance to this next area, which is gifts designated to pay down the principle of the mortgage on our buildings. The nuance is that there are two different catego-ries for designating gifts to be applied against the mortgage. They both get applied against the mortgage, but the first category does not credit your offering against your pledge for the Capital Campaign, while the second category does give you credit against your Campaign pledge. The church has had one category for this purpose for many years, which is called “Mortgage” on your regular envelope or “Building” or

“Building Debt Retirement” on the generic envelopes in the pews. Any amount you indicate in this category will be applied directly against the mortgage, but it’s important for you to note that giving in this category does not get credited against your Capital Campaign Pledge.

The Capital Campaign also has a separate designation for Campaign gifts intended solely to be used to reduce the mortgage as part of the “pay it down” part of the Campaign. There’s not a separate category printed on the envelopes, so if you want to make a mortgage reduction gift that will be applied toward fulfilling your Campaign pledge, just write in the amount of your Capital Campaign gift you want dedicated to reduction of the mortgage right above the box on your regular envelope.

There are other designations you can make, and if you want further information on less-common designations, the office staff will be glad to help you with any details you may want to know about.

I’d like to close with a note of thanks to the unsung group of volunteers who come in every Monday morning to act as counters to record everyone’s offerings received over the weekend. Their work is key to us being able to be good stewards of your offerings and we literally couldn’t do it without them. By the way, this group is always interested in talking with anyone who might like to volunteer to work occa-

sional Mondays, so if you’re interested please contact Teresa Hodges or David Fricke.

Yours in Christ, Mark Ritter

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church: MONTHLY UPDATE

Stewardship Committee: Stewardship Committee "Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter- when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?" -- Isaiah 58:7

During the Lenten season, we are called to examine our relationship with the Lord and the sacrifice made by Christ. We sinners must only believe to enter His perfect Kingdom, but this knowledge gives us the freedom as forgiven and beloved children to do more.

The Good News is ever-present, and at Holy Trinity, we work to demonstrate the Good News to our neighbors through our gifts, words, and deeds. From the Hunger Walk, to weekly worship services, to Habitat for Humanity builds, it feels so good to give back to our Creator and loving Father.

We also have more "good news" from our church to celebrate and share this month. She has always been a sister in Christ, but we are so excited to officially welcome Pastor Bonnie to our church. Thank you for giving your time and treasure to our ministries here at Holy Trinity. Your commitment will help us continue to grow and share the ultimate Good News with others!

Dear friends at Holy Trinity, Thank you for supporting the 2019 Secret Santa. You helped make a good program great! With your help, we brightened the day for more than 650 children. Orchestrating such a project takes many hands, and that helped provide more then 2500 items, organize them down to individual kids and get them out to their house, all before Christmas. It took nearly 100 different organizations and individuals to pull it off, but it happened!

We do this program every year because every child deserves Christmas. These kids have been through trauma that some of us may not even be able to believe. Cobb County has nearly 600 kids in care with each of them having a different story and circumstance, and they each deserve to be shown love, even if it’s through an anonymous gift. You were part of something big and you made a difference. Our village is a little brighter because of you. Sincerely, Samantha Hassler, Volunteer Resource Coordinator, GA Dept. of Human Resources

Dear Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Thank you so much for your donation to The Extension. Your gift will go toward saving and restoring the lives of the men and women in our program who are working toward long term recovery and transitioning back into our community. Blessing to you and your families in 2020. Sincerely, Emoya Smith, The Extension (for homelessness & addiction)

Dear Holy Trinity Women of the ELCA, On behalf of Cobb Community Foundation, we thank you so much for growing the Ferst Readers of Cobb County. This fund has the potential to do great things in our community, and each contribution increases that potential! We are honored to partner with generous donors like you. Please know that your contribution makes a difference. Shari B. Martin, Executive Director, Cobb Community Foundation-Ferst Readers

Thank you to our church family for the comforting cards, emails, texts and conversation on the passing of my mother, Margaret Smith. Your thoughtfulness was appreciated by my father, sister and myself. Peace, Kathie Lown and family.

Children, Adult and Family Ministry Update

Kids Sunday School is a happening place! We are learning about the Fruits of the Spirit each week with an occasional change to match our lesson to coincide with the lesson being taught in our worship services. It is amazing the way kids grasp Bible truths each week. We frequently have our own little quiz to see if they are retaining what they have heard and they always know the answers! God is so faithful to use His word in our lives. Each week is a stand-alone lesson. Children can begin any week of the year and fit right in to what we are doing. Help them get here. It will make a world of difference in their lives today and in the future as they “grow in wisdom and stature and favor with God and man,” (Luke 2:52 NIV) just like Jesus did as a child. Hope to see you Sunday! Easter Egg Hunt- Sat. April 4th from 10:00 – 11:30 AM. Free community event! The Easter Bunny will be here for a fun photo opp. There will be crafts, games, light snacks and a huge EGG HUNT! The real story of Easter will be told in a child-friendly way. It is a great way to help your children begin to understand how much Jesus loves them. Don’t forget to invite your friends and bring your Easter baskets!

Vacation Bible School is June 8th through 12th from 9:00 AM to noon. On the last day of VBS, we have a family picnic at noon in our pavilion. Everyone is invited! Make sure to

put it on your calendar! Registration begins April 1st. Information about registration will be posted on our website. This year we are doing “Rocky Railway, Jesus’ Power Pulls Us Through.” It is going to be a great week as we travel together through some amazing places and hear about some really cool people! VBS is for kids 3 years to 5th grade. Rising 6th graders can serve as helpers, but they must come to training (date and time to be announced).

This year there is a $5.00 donation requested to be given on the first day of VBS to support God’s Global Barnyard. This organization supports training, education, resources (and much more) to help the community care for animals. Can’t wait til you get here and get your tickets and passports for the great adventure ahead! See you June 8th.

Coming this Spring! We are adding a light-hearted Sunday School class that looks at the Bible and helps us see how to better communicate with one another. The title is, “I Said This, You Heard That.” It is a great way to get understanding of friends, family and especially spouses! Everyone is welcome. It is being facilitated by Ryan and Kristi Bjork and will meet in the Upper Room at 9:45 on Sundays. Date of first class to be announced. Please watch the church email as well as the week to week for more specifics. Make plans to attend, you don’t want to miss this fun class!

Watch the Weekly E-News and the Week to Week for the start date.

Hope to see you soon! Contact Gaye Markham for more information at 770-971-4600.

Holy Trinity Youth

Youth Valentine’s Dinner What a fantastic job the Youth did hosting the annual

Valentine’s Dinner at Holy Trinity! The setting was lovely, the

Youth were charming, the live music very much added to the

atmosphere, and the food and beverages were a hit. Our

Youth (and their families) serve Holy Trinity in many ways,

from assisting the Sunday School children with special activi-

ties and events like the Christmas Pageant and Easter Egg

Hunt, to helping fund their own Christian learning through

such experiences as Campfirmation, Affirm, and Mission trips.

They do this by hosting the Valentine’s Dinner, Easter Break-

fast, Christmas Wreath Sale and Garage Sale (a huge under-

taking). You can help support their efforts by participating in

their fundraisers (see the garage sale announcement at the bottom of the page). You may also give a designat-

ed gift to the Youth program any time by indicating “Youth” in the memo section of your check or envelope.

The yard sale is back! The Youth of Holy Trinity will once again spon-sor the annual spring yard sale. It will be held on Saturday April 25. Drop off days will be Wednesday April 22 to Friday April 24. Look for details closer to the date. Contact Karen Stephan for more information at 678-525-7857 or [email protected].

Navajo Dig Deep Water Project Did you know that 1.6 million Americans do not have running water?

DigDeep is a water charity that believes everyone has the right to clean running water and is working hard to provide that resource to Navajos who are off the grid.

During Lent, our Holy Trinity family will look outside our community to share our money gifts to support this charity. DigDeep uses 100% of their donations to provide running water for Navajos in New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona. No donations are used for administrative costs. Their goal is to continue to ensure that Navajos in all 3 states have

running water. A running water system for a Navajo home costs $3,100. If each Holy Trinity person or family commits to $2 per day during Lent, we could make a lasting donation to this project. If you would like more information, please stop by the Navajo DigDeep ministry station through April 12, Easter Sunday or visit digdeep.org.

Clean water is a necessity and a gift that keeps on giving. You may send your offering to the church office, place it in the offering plate, or put it in the container at the ministry station. Please make out checks to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and indicate “Navajo Water Project” in the memo section. Your donations are greatly appreciated! Judy Hays ([email protected]).

Soon, more and more items will show a new logo on the label. For those, you will use your smartphone to scan your receipt, and all BTFE donations will go directly to your designated school. Download the free app (Box Tops for Education), sign up, and the app will explain the process. You are now ready to start scanning and helping your school raise funds.

For each item purchased, your school will earn 10 cents (and sometimes more). Our grandson’s school has collected $799 toward their $1000 goal this year, so those dimes add up for good, so I hope you’ll continue to participate. Thank you, Sherrill McGraw
