Letter From The Publisher

Here at The Turn we celebrate our cherished pros and connect them with the golf

community at large. In fact, if you are reading our magazine you are more than likely

to recognize one of the “authors” on the cover page. And after all, what is more unique

than the relationship we have with our trusted golf instructors? Who else are we

willing to take so much criticism from this late in life? The fact is I love golf and would

go to any length to improve my game even just a little bit, maybe by keeping the ball

in the fairway a few more times or curbing those pesky three-putts. Indeed there

is something special about the game that keeps us coming back weekend after

weekend. Some call it an obsession, or as Mark Twain said “a good walk spoiled.”

Personally, when I hit that perfect shot, like the ones I see from Tiger or Phil, or from

my smiling pro, there is no better feeling. I work in a great industry. I get to work with

and pick the brain’s of some of the top PGA instructors from all around the country.

With all the advice offered, I wish I could actually finish a round without thinking about

the shot or hole that could have been. It is my great pleasure to present my fellow

golf lovers with advice and insight from some of the best in the country.

All the Best, T. Reed Smith

shift towards the target. This will encourage your hands and arms to

drop down from the top of your swing and your shots will start more in

line with your intended target.

When you practice, try to hit shots that start right off the target if you

play right handed, or left of the target if you play left handed. This will

help you get the feel of a swing path that starts from the inside instead

of the outside that helps produce a slice.

If you ARe lIke MoST GolfeRS, THe SlIce IS youR PRoBleM SHoT.

The two factors that create this shot are 1 a club face that is open at

impact and 2 an out-to-in swing path in the downswing. Both of these

mistakes must be corrected to cure your slice. fixing one mistake and

not the other could lead to a new problem shot.

There are two different problems that may be contributing to your

open club face at impact. The first is that your grip pressure on the

club may be too tight. This will make it more difficult to square the

club face and properly release the club at impact. on a scale of 1 to 10

with 1 being the lightest and 10 being the tightest, your grip pressure

should be about 3 or 4. The second problem may be the position of

your hands on the golf club. If your hands are turned more towards

the target, this is called a weak or open face grip. Get in your set up

position and look down at your hands. If you see only one knuckle

on your top hand, you have an open face grip. This makes it more

difficult to square the club face at impact. Turn your hands away from

the target so that when you look down you see three knuckles on your

top hand. This will help you square the club face at impact and hit

straighter shots.

In your downswing we must eliminate the out to in swing path, better

known as over the top. Additionally, in your downswing, the club

must approach from inside your intended target line. This is best

accomplished by not starting your downswing with your hands and

arms; rather, feel like you start the downswing with a small weight

Mr. consistency: Luke DonaLD’s Banner Year

By Will Garcia, Staff Writer

When Winston Churchill said “consistent effort, not strength…is the key to unlocking our potential”, he could have been talking about his fellow englishman Luke Donald. Since 2001, Luke Donald has been a steady picture of excellence. But in 2011 his consistent game exploded into a banner year that catapulted him into the world’s top ranked player.

With 2 PGA tour wins, 5 second place finishes, 4 third place finishes and 21 top-tens, Donald’s 2011 season was the blueprint of what it takes to be number one. He was Player of the Year in the PGA and european tours. In October, he came from behind on Sunday to win the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic with 6 straight birdies on the back nine to become the tour’s money leader, which he held on to for the year. Donald also won the Vardon trophy and the Byron Nelson award for lowest scoring average at 68.86. His consistent play and effortless swing made him the talk, and envy, of the tour.

Nowhere was Donald more consistent than on the greens. He went 486 holes without a three putt this year, beating the PGA tour record by more than 100 holes. He had the lowest putt percentage on tour and he went 529 for 529 on putts under three feet.

His now cemented status among golf’s elite did not, however, come out of nowhere. As the star of Northwestern University’s college team he won the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship in 1999 beating tiger Wood’s previous college record. In 2001, he became just the 11th PGA rookie to make over a million dollars his first year. With his brother Christian in tow (as his caddy), Donald has finally reached golf’s elite and will be the player to watch in 2012 as he seeks his first major.

Luke Donald is also recognized as one of the tour’s true gentlemen. Outgoing and sportsman-like, his staggeringly successful season has been applauded by his fellow golfers. His consistency on the course has mirrored his consistency at home: he married his college sweetheart from Northwestern. When their daughter ellie was born this year, Donald said “I don’t think it’s a coincidence my golf has got a lot better since ellie was born.” Donald is also an avid painter, he studied Art theory at Northwestern and has even donated an original painting to the PGA for charity.

With tiger back on the rise and rory McIlroy playing incredible golf look for Donald to be gunning for each and every major i n 2012.

The Turn: How did you get into golf?

Euan Dougal: Growing up in Scotland I was surrounded by the game.

My uncle played on the european Tour and many of my

family members, including my grandparents, were avid

golfers. I was given a set of Tony Jacklin Dunlop golf clubs

for christmas when I was 8 years old and, with a few pointers

from my uncle, took to the links and was soon hooked.

TT: Who is your golf hero and why?

ED: Severiano Ballesteros. Seve blew the dust off golf and made the game

exciting again. His humble beginnings, style, charisma and unbelievable

golfing abilities made him a true hero for me and my golfing friends growing

up. His efforts to include continental europe in the Ryder cup rejuvenated

the event and his passion for the game and for match play are unparalleled.

I would also like to add a note to acknowledge my late Grandfather who

patiently fuelled my desire, taught me the game and put me in my place

when needed. He loved golf and I loved playing with he and his pals.

TT: What is your most memorable moment in your best round of golf?

ED: I made a hole in one on a Par 4 during a ‘Play With The Pro’ round at Beacon

Hall Golf club in Toronto about ten years ago. Although it was not my career

best score I will always remember the reaction of my three playing partners

and how much fun we had that day. I recall our best ball score being 54 and

that no one would believe us!

TT: Tiger or Phil?

ED: Tiger. When he is on his game there is no better player to watch.

His record speaks for itself.

TT: Belly or standard putter?

ED: Standard. call me a traditionalist or just someone who

has never tried a belly putter!

TT: How far can you drive the ball in perfect conditions?

Define perfect conditions? on the launch monitor

I’m around 280 yards.

TT: What is your favorite part of having a career in golf?

I really enjoy the daily interaction with great people. I have been very

fortunate to have worked at some fantastic facilities in some great

locations around the world and it is always the people who I have

worked with (and for) that have made these experiences special. This

network of people have provided me with lasting friendships, numerous

opportunities and countless fond memories.

TT: Do you have any advice for golf enthusiasts considering PGA membership?

I am a proud member of the canadian PGA and would encourage

any golf enthusiast to pursue a career in golf and apply for a PGA

Apprenticeship. The golf business is vast and offers a multitude of

rewarding career opportunities for committed individuals who love the

game. Whether running a club, pursuing a playing career, teaching,

organizing events or working with an industry supplier the PGA

Professional plays their part in both promoting and protecting the game

of golf, its rules and its traditions. My advice would be to commit to the

program, work hard and dream big.

I WoulD lIke To SHARe My THouGHTS AS A PGA PRofeSSIonAl on

the health of the game of golf. I hear so often that golf is not healthy.

I would disagree with that statement. There are so many people that

want to either learn to play or want to come back to the game.

There are a few issues that are keeping these people from playing.

one is time. Golf has become a time consuming sport. five hour plus

rounds, long waits to get tee times, and long commutes to courses.

Golf on television has made golf very slow. People watch the pros on

television throw grass in the air to check wind, walk off the distance to

the flag and changing clubs two or three times before deciding to hit

the shot. To avoid this, keep the game moving by playing “ready” golf.

When it is your turn to play, be ready. Get your distance to the hole and

decide what club to hit while your playing partner is hitting their shot,

this will make your game faster and more enjoyable and it will also

allow the players behind you to have a better time.

Golf does not have to be so time consuming. Play fewer holes. I would

like to see courses come up with rates for not only 9 or 18 holes, but a

fee for 4 holes. We, as golf course operators, need to be creative. We

need to think “outside the box”. The setup and design of a golf course

serves as another factor in the length of time it takes to play. long

holes, long rough and fast greens. All of these factors add time

to a round. As golf course operators, it is our job to set the golf course

up so the patrons will be able to play faster and have more fun. If

the course is set up fair and friendly the rounds of golf will be more

enjoyable.

Growing the game is an important issue to the PGA of America. As a

PGA Professional, I know that in order to grow the game I need to make

golf fun and accessible. Here at the country club of Petersburg, I have

done a couple of things to help grow the game at my facility. first, I have

started an unlimited lesson package. This package is priced to entice

my members to take as many lessons as they can to improve. I have

set a max number of people who can get this package to 20. once they

are on the lesson plan they can schedule as many lessons as they want

for the calendar year. This plan has increased activity at the club. My

students are practicing more and that means they are spending more

time at the club. The more time they spend, the more people they meet,

the more they play. It becomes a “snowball” effect. Another program

that our club has done to insure the health of the game is making our

club accessible to juniors. We have started a junior membership for

high school age juniors. The country club of Petersburg sees a real

benefit to junior golf in growing the game. furthermore, a strong junior

program brings more families to the facility. our junior membership is

designed to attract young players that don’t have parents that play golf.

younger families with young aspiring golfers want to have someone for

their kids to play golf with. Junior golf is the future of the game. These

kids are the next generation of members at clubs or green fee paying

players as they graduate from college and enter the work force. I would

encourage any club or course to make their facility easy for kids to

belong. kids get their parents involved. family golf is important at my

facility and an area that needs to always be improving. Golf is a great

way for families to spend time together. It is one of the few sports that

the whole family can be together and play at the same time. I remember

the time I spent with my parents and my own kids on the course. As a

family we had so much fun. I still spend time with my kids on the course

and I wouldn’t trade those times for anything.

let’s grow the game through juniors and families. Get people involved.

The next time you plan to go to the course ask someone that doesn’t

play to join you. you will get a great sense of enjoyment introducing

some new people to the greatest of games.n

Do you WAnT To HIT THe BAll fARTHeR? of couRSe you Do.

Do you want more accuracy with your irons? you are not alone. Why

don’t you take a divot? Do you know? It is not because you are lifting

your head. no! you are saying, “Really, because that is what my

friends all tell me after I top a shot.” you are suffering from one of

the most deadly golfing diseases known to man, misconceptions.

In order to get maximum distance and accuracy from your shots, hit

the ball in the center of the club face. It helps if the face is square to

the swing path as well. The biggest reason why golfers don’t hit the

ball solid or with any distance is because their lead wrist is bent or

collapsed at impact. We call this a “ScooP.” I call this job security!

Scooping is one of the most common errors that the average golfer

make in the golf swing. A proper impact position should look like the

picture to the right.

2 Drills that

Will Help

The lead wrist should be flat, the rear wrist is bent at the moment

that the ball collides with the club-face. The shaft of the club should

lean towards the target. let’s discuss some possible causes of a poor

impact position and I will give you a couple of drills that will help

you create the ultimate impact condition and get you striking it more

solid in no time.

PGA Director of Instruction Carmel Country Club

Page 13: The TURN GOLF

DRILL #1 left arm Only Swingsto start to train the left or lead arm, start by making

half swing with your left arm only. to do this drill,

place your right (for righties) hand over your left

bicep to keep your left arm connected to your

shoulder as you make your swings. Gradually

rotate the back of your left hand through impact

until it faces the ground half way through the finish.

Let your left elbow fold to the ground. try hitting an

8 iron off a low tee for practice for 25 reps.

Cause #1 trying to Help the Ball Off Of the Groundthere are many reasons why we scoop but this is the most common. trying to lift the ball off the ground. Golf is a game of opposites. the more you try to help the ball off of the ground, the more you will roll the ball on the ground or top the ball. Understand the philosophy that we discussed earlier. Strike the ball with a forward leaning shaft, hands in front of the ball with a flat lead wrist and the ball will get off of the ground.

Cause #2 the rear Hand overtaking the lead handIt is my belief that if your lead hand has not been trained to support the pushing of the rear hand through the hitting zone, it will break down. I know that you have all heard that golf is a right handed game, but I believe that it is a two sided game. Both hands have to do their part. If the lead hand is not coordinated or trained then we have to do some drills that will improve this area of weakness. this is a key skill that all expert golfers possess.

here are two drills that will help to improve the weaker lead side and improve your ball striking.

Page 14: The TURN GOLF

DRILL #2 “the claw Drill”

now we are going to add the right hand

but only partially. clasp your right hand at

the wrist area of your left so it is only

guiding the club but still using your left

hand predominately. Hit some balls with

an 8 iron off a low tee. 25 reps.

Johnny Miller used to hit 7 irons with his

left arm only about 165 yards in his practice

sessions. He obviously understood the

importance of the lead arm. Golf is a two sided

game. The more balance that you have in

your hands and arms, the more balance and

power you will have in your ball striking.

for you to be able to control in order to play your best golf. Rhythm is

something that we rarely go out to the range to intentionally practice.

Timing is everything! Good tempo, rhythm and timing are all a result of

being relaxed and in control. My advice is for you to “Swing, don’t hit! “

Here’s how to practice the proper swing and avoid being a hitter

during your next practice session.

Pick out a target on the range as soon as you set up to practice. Take

some practice swings toward that target. keep your grip pressure soft.

keep your head still. Swing gracefully and effortlessly going back.

Pause at the top. Start the downswing down with a pull of your left arm

(for right handers). let the speed in your swing build gradually from the

beginning of the downswing, to the impact position. Do not force the

club down from the top. let it drop from the top. Build speed on the

way down, gradually. finish your swing aggressively.

once you are finished taking a few practice swings, thinking about the

tips outlined here, simply address a ball and swing at it, using your

practice swing technique. That’s right, swing at the ball with your

practice swing! There is no reason to have a differentmove at the ball,

just because there is a ball there. When you swing during a practice

swing, you are warming the oven for how you want to feel as you swing

at the ball. I call this a “rehearsal swing.” use it for contacting the ball

and you will be a swinger, not a hitter. Start out with your short clubs

and work your way up to the long clubs. And, for the record, swing all of

your clubs with the same tempo. Do not swing your long irons or driver

harder than your mid and short irons.

In my opinion, there is an excellent device out there to help you train

your tempo! It is called the Orange Whip trainer!

All you need to do is swing this device for five minutes a day. Your tempo will improve

dramatically! Anyone interested in training their tempo daily should have an Orange

Whip trainer of their own. It is rare to find one that suits all students. this one certainly

does! In my opinion, everyone needs to work on their tempo! You can order one of

.. .. ... ... .... ....

Flexibility The shaft is heavy, yet very flexible. The weight on each end

of the shaft provides a low-impact stretch while you swing it.

Strength The orange Whip gives you a good core muscle workout when you

use it during repetitive motion drills. The wrists and forearms get a

good burn when you do various drills and when you wrist hinge

during the swinging motion.

Coordination The orange Whip synchronizes the arms and body.

When this motion is out of sync, you will lose your balance.

tempo As the arms and body work together, a natural rhythm takes over

the swing. As tempo develops, you will always feel in balance and

as if you are swinging with an efficient motion.

If a golfer trains their swing without using a ball, the mind and body will allow the swing to develop naturally. Swing a club every day for 5

minutes, at home, on the days that you don’t get out for golf. A training aid like the orange Whip Trainer can eliminate the “hit” instinct from

your mind. As a result, consistency can be developed.

Juniors Must be a priority for all ClubsTHRouGHouT My 17 yeAR TenuRe AT

Stonehenge Golf & country club, I have been

blessed with a healthy stock of Junior golfers

to fill our summer junior golf programs. We

have had to increase the age offerings to as

young as 4 and have added a Golf Academy

for the middle to high school age kids. But

there has always been a bit of a “fly in the

ointment” on two fronts… because we have

such an active golf calendar, we have had

trouble with providing the kids with formal

instruction on the golf course and not just on

the range, and we have noticed that many of

the kids only come out to the course when

we are providing programs for them… in

other words, we don’t see a whole lot of them

playing with their parents in the evening or on

Sunday afternoons which have always been

traditional times to see the kids out with

their families.

In addition to these two concerns, as

Instructors, we have noticed that many of the

kids seem to become tired more quickly than

in the past and also seem to be more focused

on getting inside for lunch than staying

outside for golf. I don’t think that all of the

blame can be placed on the kids…hitting balls

on the range for an hour or playing a 8 man

scramble on the 18th hole gets old after a

while. At the conclusion of this past season’s

program it was evident that we needed to find

a better way to bring our kids into the game

and keep them interested.

As Head Golf Professional, this charge

lands clearly on my shoulders as it should,

but I wasn’t having much luck finding or

developing the program that I felt would

achieve the results that I was looking for.

More fun and enthusiasm for the kids, a

vehicle to help grow their stamina, and a

desire for them to come out and play at

different times during the week.

By chance, I was listening to the PGA network

on XM radio and heard an interview with

Suzanne Strudwick, a former player on the

lPGA Tour. Suzanne is the founder of Golf

Academy one Junior Golf. I listened to Peter

kessler’s interview of Suzanne and how Golf

Academy one was incorporating lTAD, (long

Term Athletic Development), into their Junior

golf program. As I listened I knew that this

was the program that I was looking for.

In conjunction with TPI, (Titleist Performance

Institute), Suzanne and her group have come

up with a Junior Program that focuses on

building athletes and not just golfers. The

program incorporates age-appropriate athletic

development into

a golf-instructional program which has reaped

great success thus far at the

facilities’ that are using the program.

I have already rolled this program out to

our Junior members’, but we’ll be taking the

program one step further and offering it to all

kids in the community. We realize that we have

a commitment to the kids and a commitment

to grow the game of golf. We feel that Golf

Academy one will be a tremendous catalyst

for doing just that and the juniors will have a

great time along the way!

back in play. Take a lofted club. Set up with

the ball a little farther back in your stance than

normal and the clubface slightly open. The

open clubface will help you get the ball up

quickly and counteract the tendency of the

grass to grab the hosel and close the face.

your body alignment should be slightly left of

the target because the open clubface will send

the ball to the right if the grass does not close

the clubface. Apply a little more grip pressure

than usual with the left hand to help keep the

clubface square throughout impact.

Take the club back a little steeper on the back

swing than normal. This, along with playing

the ball back in your stance creates a steeper

angle of attack into the ball, which eliminates

the amount of grass you have to swing

through before impact and helps get the back

airborne quickly. Again, hold the club firmly

throughout the shot. you should be able to

get plenty of distance and hit the ball straight.

uphill Lie

The most important consideration when facing

an uphill lie is to remember that the slope

adds loft to your shot and results in a higher

trajectory. Take at least one club more than

you would normally hit, possibly two clubs

more if the slope is severe. Set up with your

spine perpendicular to the slope. This sets

your shoulders parallel to the ground and

allows you to swing down the slope going

back and up the slope going through. Set your

weight slightly to the right side at address and

play the ball toward the front of your stance.

flare your left foot out about a quarter turn to

encourage weight transfer on the downswing.

Downhill Lie

This shot is more troublesome for most

golfers, but it’s not really and more difficult. A

downhill lie decreases the amount of loft on

the club and causes the ball to fly with a lower

trajectory. Take one less club than you would

normally hit. Again, set up with your spine

perpendicular to the slope and your shoulders

parallel to the ground so that the club swings

up the slope going back and down the slope

coming through. Position your weight toward

the left side and position the ball slightly back

in your stance. Turning against the slope is

difficult so you may want to close your stance

a bit to encourage a better turn.

side Hill – Ball above Feet

To play this shot, stand taller at address with

less knee flex than you would normally use.

choke down about an inch on the club since

the distance between your hands and the

ball is less than from a flat lie. The club will

swing more around your body on a flatter

plane when the ball is above your feet. This

decreases the loft on the club and results in a

low, right-to-left shot, so choose one club less

than you would normally hit and align your

body and clubface slightly to the right of the

target. keep your weight set toward the balls

of your feet throughout the swing.

even the pros have trouble with this shot, but

that doesn’t mean you have to. To get down

to the ball, flex your knees more at address

and bend more from the hips. Hold the club

at the end of the grip. Widen your stance a bit

to lower your center of gravity. This creates

stability during the swing. The slope of the

ground causes your swing lane to become

more upright and vertical and also adds loft

by opening the face of the club. These factors

generally add up to a high, left-to-right shot.

use one more club than you normally do from

the same distance and align your body and

clubface to the left of the target line. A good

swing key for this shot is to maintain your

knee flex throughout the swing.

Remember, the flight of the ball tends to

reflect the direction of the slope. Practice

uneven lies whenever you can to get a feel for

the shots you hit from the various situations.

It’s always an advantage to know what to

expect. With all specialty shots, you should

make a couple of extra practice swings before

attempting to strike the ball. Program the

shape and feel of the swing into your mind’s

eye and visualize the flight of the ball. And

relax! Shots from uneven lies are usually not

as difficult as they seem. Don’t let tension

ruin your efforts.

began with Sam Snead’s consecutive victories to initiate the crosby

Pebble Beach national Pro-Am. even lanny Wadkins staked his claim

each course at Pebble Beach Resorts has its own distinct environment,

style and character, and is designed to challenge and thrill every

tournament participant. Since 1919, the exquisite beauty and

unmatched history of Pebble Beach Golf links has made the site a

pinnacle for all tournaments at the Resorts. Ranked the no. 1 public

course in the united States by Golf Digest, this storied tract boasts

stunning ocean views, wide-open vistas and cliff-side fairways

along the Pacific’s rugged coastline. Spyglass Hill Golf course, rated

as one the toughest courses in the world, features two distinctly

different kinds of terrain that influence the way the holes look and

play, with the first five holes rolling through sandy, seaside dunes

and the following 13 cutting through majestic pines with elevated

greens and strategically placed bunkers. The links at Spanish Bay,

designed after the historical european courses, are so authentic that

your regular shot or a low, running shot to play the firm turf while

explore this section for various tennis articles which deal with the

technical, tactical and mental part of the tennis game. Sometimes

you’ll need only one article to change your perspective or to show

you another way of looking at the game of tennis.

you’ll find articles that deal with the mental part of the game.

They may show you a different way of thinking and can actually

reframe your thinking, if you are familiar with this term from

nlP and other fields.

A tennis article dealing with the tactical part of the game is actually

the most common type of tennis information www.tennismindgame.

com/tennis-articles. Many players have learned good tennis tips

and ideas through their experience and are happy to publish them

on various sites.

And then there are instructional articles which in my

opinion are the next large group of articles related

to tennis. It is also the part of the game that is

in the most demand. Most people are looking

for a good instruction article on tennis

technique.

Most of the articles here will be about tennis

strategy and mental approach since that is

the main theme of this site. you’ll learn how

to control your mind, tennis secrets and how

to actually apply various tennis instruction that

you have learned in a slightly different way.”

Rules of SudokoThe object of game is to fill the other empty cells with numbers between 1 and 9 (1 number only in each cell). The objective is to fill a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids that compose the grid (also called “boxes”, “blocks”, “regions”, or “sub-squares”) contains all of the digits from 1 to 9
