JAN. 18TH • UCSB JAZZ ENSEMBLE Directed by Jon Nathan, UCSB’s top jazz combo performs sections from its repertoire built over the last two years, including works from Fall 2016’s concert including Dave Brubecks’s “Fujiyama”, Woody Shaw’s “Katrina Ballerina”, and the funk “Fried Grease”. Performers are saxophonist Josh Sheltzer, trombonist Cameron Swanson, guitarist Soham Mistry, pianist Nick Ray, bassist Jacob Acosta, and drummer Shane Sato.

JAN. 25TH • AFRO-CUBAN MUSIC WITH MIGUELITO Y GRUPO MAFEREFUNSanta Barbara-based Miguelito Leon brings his Grupo Maferefun to present a rousing performance of Afro-Cuba singing and drumming.

FEB. 1ST • DIA DE LA CANDELARIA: MUSIC FROM MEXICOCandlemas in Mexico: Día de la Candelaria, or Candlemas, is celebrated throughout Mexico on February 2nd. It is mainly a religious and family celebration, but in some places, such as Tlacotalpan, Veracruz, it is a major fiesta with bullfights, parades, and music festivals. Led by Juan Zaragoza, Mariachi Las Olas de SB will perform some of the music from this region of Mexico and other popular genres.

FEB. 8TH • UCSB BRASS ENSEMBLES PRESENT…

Directed by Steve Gross, the Maurice Faulkner Brass Quintet and the Suzanne Faulkner Horn Ensemble will present repertoire from the Renaissance to modern jazz. The groups perform on horn, trumpet, and trombone.

FEB. 15TH • A CENTURY OF SONG, STILL GOING STRONG : CHARLIE KING & BEV GRANTCharlie King is a musical storyteller and political satirist. He sings and writes passionately about the extraordinary lives of ordinary people. Pete Seeger hailed him as “One of the finest singers and songwriters of our time.” He has been at the heart of American folk music for half a century and has been writing songs for over 40 years. Bev Grant is an activist, feminist singer-songwriter. For the past 50 years she has devoted herself to topical songwriting and social activism, notably in her band The Human Condition and as founder and director of the Brooklyn Women’s Chorus. Her song “We Were There” has become an anthem of women in the labor movement. “…a brilliant feminist with a true rock and roll heart. What’s not to love?”

FEB. 22ND • CELTIC MUSIC WITH THREE FOR JOYThree for Joy is a Celtic music and Irish dance band made up of three siblings: Angela Rose (10 years old), Joseph (11), and Dominic (13) Padula. With their fiddles, cello and mandolin, the group will perform traditional Celtic tunes—Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton—while weaving Irish dancing into the performance.

MAR. 1ST • GAMELAN MUSIC FROM INDONESIAGamelan is the celebrated gong orchestra of Indonesia. Led by Richard North, the UCSB Gamelan Ensemble will showcase an ancient style of gamelan from Cirebon, West Java, that ranges from calm and contemplative to exuberant and energetic, featuring dynamic drumming, lively interlocking rhythms, and exciting mask dancing.

MAR. 8TH • UCSB GOSPEL CHOIRDirected by Victor Bell, the choir will perform traditional and contemporary songs drawn from African American religious traditions.
