The Unemployed Philosophers Guild, July-December 2016

The origins of the Unemployed Philosophers Guild are shrouded in mystery.

Some accounts trace our birth to Athens in the latter half of the 4th century BCE. Allegedly, several lesser philosophers

grew weary of the endless Socratic dialogue endemic to their trade and turned to crafting household implements and playthings. (Hence the assertions that Socrates quaffed his poisonous hemlock from one of the Unemployed Philosophers Guild’s designs, and the violent debate surrounding the question of whether it was a traditional chalice or a “disappearing” chalice.)

Legends of the Unemployed Philosophers Guild resurfaced in the High Middle Ages, when UPG entered the world of

commerce by selling novelty items to pilgrims on long lines for the restroom. Business boomed until 1211 when Pope Innocent III condemned our bawdy History of the Toga drinking cups – after which, unsurprisingly, business

boomed even more. Though half of our membership was burned at the stake for depictions of Plato in a low-cut cloak and mini-toga, they went to their demise insisting it was art.

More recently, the ancient and venerable Unemployed Philosophers Guild was revived in the early 1990s, a time when

it was still cool to live in New York City’s Lower East Side. Two brothers turned their advanced degrees, creativity, and love of paying rent to fulfilling the people’s needs for finger puppets, warm slippers, coffee cups, and cracking up at stuff.
