CALL TO ACTION FOR A TB-FREE INDIA THE UNION SOUTH EAST ASIA REGION IN 2017 The Union began work with the Government of India on a nationwide TB case-finding campaign focusing on vulnerable populations in 50 districts across 18 states, with the aim to improve TB detection rates at the early stages of disease. Members of Parliament met in New Delhi to launch the India TB Caucus, committing to focus government efforts on TB and work across party lines to address this issue. The meeting was jointly organised by The Union and partners. Organised by The Union, the TB-Free India Summit was held in April in Dharamshala, India. It drew together top government officials, members of parliament and Indian celebrities to increase momentum in the fight against TB. The summit concluded with a cricket match, where India’s top celebrities and politicians competed to symbolically ‘bowl TB out of India’. At the India TB Caucus, TB activists and civil society members shared their stories with the MPs. Rhea Lobo, a TB survivor, shared her story about her diagnosis and the stigma she suffered as a result: “Many people told me that TB is a ‘poor man’s disease’ – but TB does not discriminate. It has no geographic, demographic or economic barriers.” The Call to Action for a TB-Free India is an advocacy initiative working to create partnerships and mobilise efforts to end TB in India. It is part of the Challenge TB project, implemented by The Union South-East Asia Office. In 2017, Call to Action for a TB-Free India carried out the following activities: A smoke-free taxi, Hue City, Viet Nam. Comprehensive smoke-free laws protect people from second-hand smoke in all enclosed public places. There is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke. CREDIT: The Union
