Wirltu Yarlu Aboriginal Education supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students into the University. This is done through foundation and degree programs, administering the Special Entry Access Scheme and providing support services. The University delivers a Preparation Program and the Indigenous Knowledge major to assist students further.

DESIGN COMPETITION

Are you a design buff? Do you live and breathe design? Do you have a creative mind? Then our Design Competition is for you. We will do a shout out in term 2 for teams of 4-5 students from South Australian schools to respond to a design brief from the School of Architecture and Built Environment. You will receive support throughout the project from our academic staff and an academic and public choice award will be given to the winning teams.

Oral health is a fundamental part of a person’s health and well-being. Oral Health Therapists and Dentists play a key role in the community by promoting and maintaining good oral health. Come to the state-of-the art Dental simulation clinic and participate in a range of hands-on interactive activities. These include: making alginate impressions/study models, evaluating sugar/acid content of foods/drinks, investigating teeth (form and function) and using our virtual reality dental simulators. In this activity, your students will be provided with the opportunity to learn about the human body, including osteology (bones) and the musculoskeletal (muscles, blood vessels and nerves) using virtual and augmented reality applications. Specifically implementing the HTC VIVE, Occulus Rift and Gear VR Hardware, you will be exposed to different learning modules and activities in anatomy, and we will discuss relevance to sporting injuries and medical conditions. Dr. Lottering and her students have been at the forefront of championing new visions of teaching excellence through virtual reality app development and software validation, through collaboration with the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at Bond University and virtual reality training for vascular surgery within the Australian Army.*

Forensic anthropologists locate and recover human skeletal remains to determine a biological profile for medico-legal death investigations. In this activity/workshop, your students will be required to complete a laboratory-based examination to determine a biological profile (ancestry, sex, age-at-death and stature estimation) on a real skeleton, using the Ray Last Skeletal Collection in the Adelaide Medical School. At the end of this activity, students will develop skills in current identification techniques used by forensic anthropologists and novel developments in virtual technology.*

Here are three doors closed: behind one is a car, behind the other two are grumpy hippopotami. The game show host asks to choose one of the doors to open; the contestant will get to keep whatever is behind it. After the door has been chosen, the host opens one of the other two to reveal a hippopotamus. He then asks if the contestant wants to change which door is chosen. Assuming the preference is to go home with a car, rather than a bulky river-dwelling mammal, should they change or not? Your students can find out for themselves by playing the card game, and in the process, learn more about probability.

This on-campus, immersive workshop will focus on various writing styles such as poetry, short-stories, blogging, novels and political writing. Structured in two short lectures, followed by writing exercises and group discussion on a selected piece, we’ll also explore the career options available as an expert writer. Students will need to come prepared with a short poem or one-page prose work.

DIGITAL STORYTELLING WORKSHOP

Get an introduction to producing online videos for different platforms. See what our Media students have produced in class and discover what makes a good digital story. Learn the process of storyboarding, scripting and sourcing images and work in pairs to transform a compelling story of your own into a short online video.

Where possible, students are asked to bring their own devices, or iPads can be supplied.
