Thank you for choosing to attendThe University of Manchester’sundergraduate open day. Byvisiting our campus you will beable to gain a real insight into thestudent experience and life here.
You will have the opportunity tofind out more about the coursesyou are interested in, meet currentstaff and students, as well asattend sessions on key issuessuch as accommodation andstudent finance. We hope youenjoy your visit and take fulladvantage of the programme wehave put together for you.
Planning your dayIn order to get the most from your day we recommendthat you take time to plan your visit. There is a lot tosee and do so we have included a visit planner at theback of this programme to make sure that you don’tmiss any of the sessions that you want to attend.
We do advise that where possible you arrive early toyour sessions as some will be very popular; in thesecases we may limit admittance to one student and onevisitor or students only.
As you make your way through the programme andstart to plan your day, you will see that next to thebuilding names/session venues there is a number inbrackets. This indicates the building number as listedon the campus map on pages 28-29 and will help youto navigate around our campus. If you are having anyproblems on the day in finding a building please ask amember of our open day team dressed in purple andthey will be happy to direct you.
Please note: We are constantly improving our campusso there might be areas undergoing refurbishmentduring our open days.
MAkiNG ThE MOST Of YOUR DAY
Stage 1Decide which subject sessions you want to attend – you canattend more than one, so just look at the timetable on pages 2 to11 to see which ones suit you best. If you are interested inMedicine, you will need to have pre-booked your place via theonline registration form.
You can also find out more about your subject by visiting therelevant Subject Exhibition Stand. These are also listed in the tintedboxes on pages 2 -11. The stands will be open from 10am –3.30pm and will provide you with the opportunity to speak withstaff and current students on the course.
Stage 2We have general information sessions runningthroughout the day covering topics such as Careers,Student Finance and Accommodation. Have a look atthe full list on page 12-14 and fit the ones you want toattend around your subject sessions.
Stage 3Finally, we have a variety of Student Experienceactivities organised such as Campus Tours andStudents’ Union Tours. We also have a StudentExperience Exhibition, which will haveinformation stands on areas from Sport andStudent Finance to Accommodation and StudyAbroad and a new Careers and SocialResponsibility Exhibition to showcase our careersservices for students and the University's uniquecommitment to social responsibility and makinga difference. For a full list see pages16-22 andplan these activities around your other sessions.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTUREWe’ve completed the biggest investment in buildings and facilities ever seen at aBritish university to create the best learning environment for our students. We areinvesting a further £1 billion in our campus. In the next few years there will be a newengineering campus, new centres for law and business, a major refurbishment of thelibrary, a bigger improved student’s union building and a new medical school.
Travelling from Piccadilly Train Station? For visitors travelling via Piccadilly Train Station, StudentAmbassadors will be able to provide you with walkingdirections to the Oxford Road Campus which takes about20 minutes. There will also be Student Ambassadors alongthe route to help direct you.
Alternatively, the University has arranged to operate a busservice (number 147) between Piccadilly Station andOxford Road Campus. The service is free of charge andwill operate at the following times;
Travelling from Victoria Station? Victoria Station is approximately 15 minutes’ walkfrom Piccadilly Gardens. Here there are frequent busservices to the Oxford Road Campus. Services includethe 41, 42, 43, 142 and 143. Alternatively a tramservice to Piccadilly Gardens runs from Victoria Station.You can then catch one of the bus services mentionedabove. Taxis are also available outside the station.
Travelling from Oxford Road Station? To get to the Oxford Road Campus, go down thestation approach to Oxford Road and turn right. TheCampus is a 10 to 15 minute walk. These are our tipson making the mostout of your day:• Our Open Days are verypopular events and sessionscan sometimes become full.To avoid disappointment wesuggest where possible youarrive early.
• Check the programme tosee when sessions occur foryour subject of interest. Youcan attend sessions formore than one subject ifyou want to.
• Decide on your subjectsessions first, and work the general sessions around these.
• Some sessions may belimited to one student andone guest when busy.
• Campus tours run all day –work these around yoursubject sessions.
• Most sessions finish tenminutes before thescheduled finish time toallow you time to get to thenext session.
• Wear sensible shoes andbring a raincoat or umbrella.Bring a bag for any literatureyou might pick up.
• Don’t forget to make timefor lunch. There are plentyof outlets around campusthat are open all day, so youcan have lunch wheneversuits you.
