UNBC Lead, HHSC 640 (Special Topics) Field Course in Ecosystem Approaches to Health In June 2011, UNBC hosted the first iteration of a Fieldschool in Ecosystem Approaches to Health in conjunction with the Ecohealth Summer school of the Canadian Community of Practice in Ecosystem Approaches to Health (CoPEH-Canada). This national initiative has been running since 2008,and was hosted previously at UBC (2008), U. Guelph (2009) and UQAM (2010). With the institutional support of SHSc this summer school was taught in conjunction with a UNBC fieldschool (HHSC473-606) and included three day intensive career development ‘workshop’ co-taught with visiting lecturers CoPEH-Canada, followed by field sites and visit on the theme of ecohealth and watersheds. The course included 20 students, including 12 graduate students and 8 career development students who participating in the intensive workshop component. Based on this precedent, the intention is to continue to run summer courses as a UNBC fieldschool in sites across Canada, returning to UNBC every 2-3 years. In 2012 the field school was hosted at U. Moncton, with UNBC and Western Deans students registering as HHSC640 students, and a total of 12 students participating in the course.

UNBC Lead, CoPEH-Canada Teaching Manual. Informed by the pedagogical innovations from the 4 years of teaching the Ecosystem Approaches to Health Field School, the CoPEH-Canada team worked intensively to consolidate teaching and learning practices in the form of an open-access teaching manual. This process involved several intensive workshops and training activites, designed to refine the pedagogy and practical teaching contributions from our team teaching efforts, into and accessible and transferable format for use in other teaching and training environments. My role of lead author on the “Participation and Research’ module and contributing editor to the remainder of this manual, has enhanced my own teaching practices and laid the foundation for further scholarship of teaching and learning around ecosystem approaches to health.

SCHOLARLY AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES (list most recent first) 9(a) Areas of special interest and accomplishments My research orientation originated during training and work as a medical doctor in New Zealand and subsequent training in applied research in public health, human ecology, and the emerging field of ecohealth, or ecosystem approaches to health. My research has focused on the impacts of ecosystem change on social determinants of health, and the design of research, education and governance options that address converging objectives at the interface of health, ecosystems and society. Notable areas of special interest and accomplishment, include: • Research linking water resources management and the determinants of health • Methodological innovation for participatory approaches to environment and health research. • Frameworks and indicators linking health, ecosystems and society. • Profiling and prioritizing Indigenous perspectives in the emerging field of Ecohealth • Contributions to ecohealth field-building: Linking health, ecosystems & society in research and teaching. founding contribution to research examining watersheds as settings to links ecosystem management with public health. Early publications drew attention to the ways in which health and wellbeing is linked to watersheds, and the potential of watershed management to improve both social and environmental determinants of health, especially in rural communities. The significance of this contribution is indicated by its reference in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment series; ongoing leadership in an international research and policy portfolio focused on Ecohealth and Watersheds; and multiple invitations to speak at international and national events on this topic. Methodological innovation for participatory approaches to environment and health research. My early publications on participatory research for environmental health preceded similar work by US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences on ‘community-based participatory research’ for environmental health. Recent contributions to participatory and multistakeholder research have been applied to international development and capacity building for environmental health, emerging infectious disease, ecosystem approaches to health and, more recently, partnered research with Northern Health focused in ‘knowledge to action’ and intersectroal action for health. Frameworks and indicators linking health, ecosystems and society.A focus on policy-relevant indicators and frameworks that link health and sustainability was initiated as a research assistant at the WHO Office of Global & Integrated Environmental Health in 1997. The development of a Framework of Health and Sustainability in PhD Thesis (2003) has subsequently informed analysis of health and sustainability issues, indicator development, and design of research and policy in a range of contexts, most recently in partnered research with Northern BC. The framework makes explicit that driving forces of social and ecosystem change have converging impacts on the determinants of health; and conversely, that interventions focused on both ecosystems and social systems – (social-ecological systems) have a ‘double-dividend’ for health. Profiling and prioritizing Indigenous perspectives in the emerging field of Ecohealth The profiling and prioritization of Indigenous perspectives has been recurring theme in my work. This orientation was founded during participatory research in New Zealand, and cultivated through work with Indigenous scholars and colleagues in Hawaii, Ecuador and New Zealand; Guest Editing of a special issue on this theme in the journal EcoHealth; and most recently working actively with the National Collaoborating Centre for Aboriginal Health in highlighting synergies between Ecohealth and Aboriginal Health, and convening of workshops, and establishing collaborations between Indigenous Scholars in New Zealand and Canada. Contributions to ecohealth field-building: Linking health, ecosystems & society in research and teaching. A consistent theme in my work has been leadership in the design of educational programs and research networks for knowledge translation and exchange, linking health, ecosystems and equity and contributing directly to the e,merging field of ecohealth and ecosystem approaches to health. I view education as an essential vehicle for knowledge translation and exchange - equipping future generations to address concerns spanning health, ecosystems and society.
