Patent system
2 fundamental elements:
Protection: patent owner gets
exclusive right to exploit his
invention for limited duration
rewards investments made in
developing a new invention
Disclosure: system requires
inventor to disclose technical
information about the new
invention to the public
Cost and benefit

Patent documents Over 100 million patent documents published to date,
nearly 3 million new patent applications published yearly
Since 1883, over 94% of patents in the public domain
80% of scientific/technological info in patent documents
50% of this information only in patent documents!
Many patent collections are available online and
accessible to all free of charge:

Strategic uses of patent information
Technical/business
avoid “reinventing the wheel”: insufficient use of patent information wastes R&D investments
Find most-up-to-date information: find existing solutions to a technical problem and existing technologies
Technology transfer: find a technology you may be interested in that is available for licensing
Search for inventors/companies active in a field of technology, track research activities of competitors
Legal: avoid litigation - putting a new product on the market without doing a search can result in high litigation costs
