G reetings! The primary purpose of this newsletter is to provide you with information on summer 2009 Honors classes. As you will see, we have two options for students who want or need to

earn Honors Seminar credit this summer and one option for students looking for an Honors World Society and Issues (WSI) course. One Honors Seminar will probably also meet elective requirements in biology -- and will provide terrific preparation for students who will be writing a thesis in the sciences -- and the other should meet elective requirements in political science, global analysis, or international rela-tions. Students pursuing a major in International Business can probably use this course to meet support work require-ments. And don't forget that the Honors College also offers courses through the Summer Law Preparation Academy!

The newsletter also contains some information on a guest lecture on constitutional law that Mr. David Frederick (brother of our Provost) will give on March 5th at 12:30 p.m. In addition to being an attorney who has argued cases in front of the Supreme Court, Mr. Frederick also was a Rhodes Scholar, so at a separate, small, sit-down session at 11:00 a.m., he will be talking about preparing to win a Rho-des Scholarship and other prestigious national scholar-ships. Students who are interested in competing for national scholarships should contact Dr. Ben Olguin (ben.olguin@utsa.edu) or Caroline Castellanos (honors@utsa.edu) about attending. Freshmen and sopho-mores are particularly encouraged to attend!

Our next newsletter -- which will follow closely on the heels of this one -- will address fall 2009 courses and the procedures for registering during Honors priority registra-tion, which begins April 6th. We do have some exciting offerings coming up for fall. In a collaboration with the College of Business, we are offering an Honors section of MGT 3613, Managing Human Resources, which will be taught by Mr. Dick Sibbernsen, a former VP with AT&T. Since Mr. Sibbernsen will be flying in from the

midwest for each class, the class will meet in an unusual format -- a full-day Saturday class on five Saturdays during the term. Only Honors students and outstanding COB students will be allowed to register for the class, which promises to be stimulating and par-ticularly valuable to Business majors! MGT and HRM majors can, of course, use the course to meet major requirements. Other students can use the course as an elective in the COB (where one is necessary for the major) or can substitute the course in Honors for an Honors Seminar or a CBK Honors course.

Through another collaboration with the School of Nursing at UTHSC-SA, we will also be offering an exciting course called "Nursing and Literature." Students who transfer to the UTHSC-SA School of Nursing will be able to use the course as an upper-division elective in the nursing program, but all pre-nursing stu-dents will be able to use the course to meet nursing prerequisites in the Humanities. Because of its focus on medical care giving, the course should also be of interest to students interested in pur-suing other health professions.

Advisors Corner

W e hope you are all in good spirits and enjoying the semester. It is just about the middle of the semes-ter, so we are halfway there! Spring Break is right around the corner and so are summer and fall registration. We encourage all of you to come in to the advising center if you have not done so re-cently to update your degree plan and make sure you are on track.

Priority registration for summer and fall will begin April 6th. To take full advantage of this perk for Honors stu-dents, you will need to have seen an advisor or turn in a schedule by April 3rd. We will be emailing you as soon as the Summer and Fall Schedule of Classes are posted on ASAP. Remember that priority registration for Honors stu-dents can guarantee a seat in a course that typically fills up very quickly!

You should be looking NOW to see if you have HOLDS or if there are prerequisites that would keep you from tak-ing a course you would like to take. Students in the 04-06 and 06-08 catalogs should check the 08-10 catalog to see if there are any additional prerequisites that could be a problem for them. If a course now has a prerequisite that it did not have in your catalog, that prerequisite will be enforced! If you still want to take that course, you will need to get permission from the department. You can find a prerequisite override form on our website. Look under "Current Students" and then "Forms."

BEADY BERLER SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDY IN ISRAEL

The Beady Berler Scholarship Fund annually awards up to $5000 to one full-time student en-rolled in a Texas college or university to study in Israel for a semester. Jewish and non-Jewish stu-dents are encouraged to apply. All you have to do to be considered for the scholarship is to complete an application and submit a 100-word essay on "Why I want to study in Israel." WORKSHOP "Writing Personal Statements for Medical and Dental School"

Dr. Ann R. Eisenberg Associate Dean of the Honors College Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.

HSS 2.01.06 Hosted by the Pre-Med Society

In this workshop, Dr. Eisenberg will share insights about writing effective personal statements for admis-sion to medical and dental school. She will also share personal statements from former UTSA students who were successful in gaining admission to medical and dental school. Much of the information she will share will also be useful for students applying to admission to other health professions programs (e.g., pharmacy, OT, PT, PA schools). Participants are encouraged to bring a draft of a personal statement to the workshop with them!

In the first part of this workshop series, Dr. Eisenberg will discuss how to write effective personal state-ments for admission to graduate school (Master's and Ph.D. programs) and will present ideas about topics that students can and should touch on in writing such essays. In the second part of the series, students will be asked to bring a draft of a personal statement to the workshop and will work with peers on editing and critiquing those drafts.

Dr. Eisenberg will provide students with an introduction to the Graduate Record (GRE) Exam. Over the series of workshops, she will present typical GRE problems and will demonstrate exercises and approaches to prob-lem-solving that students can practice to improve their scores on the Verbal and Quantitative portions of the exam.

MCNAIR POST-BACCALAUREATE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM A FEDERAL TRIO INITIATIVE FUNDED BY THE U.S. DEPARMTMENT OF EDUCATION

The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program was created under the Higher Education Amendments of 1986. It was named in honor of Dr. Ronald E. McNair (an African-American engineer, scientist and astronaut who perished in the 1986 explosion of the space shuttle Challenger). The McNair Scholars Program, as it is commonly referred to, will assist economically qualified, first generation college students and students from underrepresented groups in doctoral studies and scholarly activities. The program will provide services to underrepresented groups such as Hispanics, African Americans, Native/Alaska Americans and students with disabilities. All these activities are designed to prepare McNair scholars for the rigors of doctoral work and will ensure their preparation in all ways possible to obtain a Ph.D. or other terminal degree. They will receive the following supportive and academic services: All these activities are designed to prepare UTSA McNair scholars for the rigors of doctoral work and will ensure their preparation in all ways possible to obtain a Ph.D. or other terminal degree. McNair Staff will consult with UTSA colleges and other offices to identify and recruit eligible program participants. A mbassadorial Scholarships, The Rotary Foundation's oldest and best-known program, was founded in 1947. Since then, nearly 38,000 men and women from about 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices. To-day it is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships pro-

gram. Nearly 800 scholarships were awarded for study in 2005-06. Through grants to-taling approximately $500 million, recipients from about 70 countries studied in more than 70 nations.

Rotary scholarships provide Scholars with approximately $30,000 per year for tuition and fees, room and board, and travel. In addition to attending an academic program of their choice, Rotary Scholars participate in Rotary Club events in the host city. Stu-dents may apply and use Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships either prior to or after their graduation from college, as sophomores and above can apply.

Interested students will need to apply through a local Rotary Club. At UTSA contact, Dr. Ann Eisenberg (ann.eisenberg@utsa.edu) in the Honors College. The local appli-cation deadline is May 1 a FULL YEAR before the student intends to study abroad. If you apply in May of 2009, you will be eligible to study abroad in 2010-11.

The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship only supports study at overseas universities and not study-abroad through U.S-based universities. Students may select five options for where they wish to study, but the Rotary makes the final selection.

is accepting applications for The UTSA 2009 Summer Law School Preparation Academy

The UTSA Summer Law School Preparation Academy is a premier pre-law Program de-signed to help students successfully apply and attend law school. The Summer Law School Preparation Academy encompasses 12 hours of coursework specifically designed to hone the reading and writing skills students will need to excel in their legal education. Students who complete both Phases I and II earn a CERTIFICATE IN LEGAL REASON-ING. SLSPA students also receive a LSAT prep course, and are able to attend guest lec-turers with visiting law school professors and information sessions by law-school admis-sion representatives from every law school in Texas. Course: HON 3235.01F CRN: 33439 Title: Honors Seminar: Science: Time: MTWRF 11:00 a.m– 12:30 p.m. Reading and Writing in Science Instructor: Mr. Deemah Schirf Scientific writing is a learned skill, and this class is presented to aid students in learn-ing and honing scientific writing skills. The successful student will learn to write labora-tory reports and scientific articles for peer review, including what material to include in the abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, and discussion sections and how to present them in a clear, concise manner. Correct citation of previous work will be emphasized along with the downside of plagiarism. Articles from different jour-nals will be read and discussed to give the students different examples. The students will also learn that they must select journals appropriate for their work and write manu-scripts in accordance with the publishers’ guidelines. Finally, the students will be given some background on the peer review process. Course: HON 3223.001/ CSH 1213.01F CRN: 32055 Title: Honors Seminar: Global Systems/ Time: MTWRF 2:30- 4:00 p.m. Topics in World Cultures:Global Systems Instructor: Dr. Boyka Stefanova This course will focus on the evolution of the global system. The objective is to pro-vide the background knowledge and analytical tools needed for understanding the complexity of world politics. The first half of the course will review key concepts in the study of global interactions, such as anarchy, order, sovereignty, power, interests, he-gemony, and international society. It will trace the evolution of power constellations in the international system, the rise and decline of great powers, and questions of inter-national order and governance. The second half of the course will apply these con-cepts to case studies and the discussion of key issues in contemporary world politics, including the theory of democratic peace, the emergence of democracy as a global norm, the clash of civilizations thesis, and the globalization debate.
