the rich history of the property...1940’s: how it all beganIn the mid 1940’s, a young newlywed couple named Eleanor and Barney, a grammar school teacher and a general contractor, purchased a sixty acre farm and orange grove in the San Fernando Valley to occupy as a farm and horse ranch.
During the late 40’s and early 50’s, the couple developed the majority of the land with single family homes, while retaining 11.5 acres for industrial development. As the Valley’s industrial economy boomed during the 50’s and 60’s, the 11.5 acre site was developed with buildings ranging from 2,000 to 28,000 square feet. With such a diverse range of buildings, the site has offered companies the flexibility to expand or contract at the same location. That, plus generous parking allocations and outstanding proximity to the Valley’s main transportation hub made the location a prime destination for both industrial and back office tenants.
One such success story was REDKEN Laboratories. In 1960, an entrepreneurial American actress named Paula Kent along with her hairdresser, Jheri Redding leased roughly 3,000 square feet of industrial space on the site and formed REDKEN Laboratories. As REDKEN thrived, numerous buildings were constructed to suit their needs, and by the 1970’s they had grown to occupy several buildings with over 100,000 square feet. REDKEN eventually had to move on to accommodate their continued growth, finally ending on 5th Avenue in New York.
looking forwardToday, the family’s third generation of ownership continues to build upon the traditions and values of Eleanor and Barney. Recognizing the transformation of the business environment and the unique requirements of the Valley’s growing media and technology firms, the family is transforming this unique and historical site into the Valley’s first creative office campus. We welcome you to The Ranch.
