Tower District BrewfestMore Beer Than You Can Shake a Fist At.

If you’re a beer lover, the Tower District Brewfest is your chance to sample over 60 different craft beers from across

California. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to see all the great changes that have been taking place in Fresno’s #1 destination for dining and entertainment – The Tower District – where you can park your car once and spend an entire day or evening visiting dozens of locally owned restau-rants, bars, galleries, unique retailers and much more without ever having to get back in your car! If you’ve never had a chance to enjoy what the Tower District has to offer, coming down to check out Tower Brewfest is a great way to get intro-duced. The Tower District Brewfest takes place on Sunday, October 4 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the parking lot behind the Tower Theatre. Five canopied pavilions will be set up throughout the parking lot to house the vast number of brews repre-sented and food and vendor booths will line the area in between. Sample lagers, ports, ales, IPAs, stouts, ciders and many other specialty brews – some that aren’t even available in our area. Each $35 ticket includes a free sampling glass to accom-modate the unlimited samples offered and a meal ticket for one of four meals prepared by Tower District restaurants. With the huge surge in popu-larity of craft beers, and with so many of those beers represented at the dozens of Tower District restaurants and bars, the Tower District Marketing Committee decided that hosting a Brew Festival was a perfect fit. The event is in its 6th year and attendance has grown to nearly 1,000 attendees. It’s a fun-filled, day of tasty sampling! Fresno’s home-brew club the Worthogs, have played an integral role in the event from the beginning and this year, due to a change in state law, several home brewers will be offering samplings of their personal craft beers. Event attend-ees will be able to vote for their favorite home brew and the winner will be pre-sented with a trophy and bragging rights to being the first ever, most popular home brew at the Tower District Brewfest. In addition to the brews, Bob-by Salazar’s Taqueria, Zen Wok Fusion,

Sequoia Brewing Company and Me-N-Ed’s Pizza will be serving up food to the crowds. Each ticket holder will receive a meal voucher for one of these offerings and additional food may be purchased as well. In keeping with a proper Brew-fest, traditional polka and oompah music will be featured by Ed Hull’s Polkateers with the Valley’s own Deja Blues wrap-ping up the afternoon with some foot stompin’, dance-inspiring, upbeat, rhythm and blues. It will be an afternoon of tasty brews, fantastic food, great music, and lots of fun. Tickets for the Tower District Brewfest are only $35.00 and are available at Sequoia Brewing Company, Livingstone’s, the Tower Theatre box

office, Grandmarie’s Chicken Pie Shop, Irene’s Cafe, Tioga-Sequoia tasting room, or online at www.towerdistrict.org. Every ticket holder will receive a complimentary tasting glass, free tastings at every booth, and a meal ticket. $10.00 designated driver tickets will be available at the door. So come out and enjoy an afternoon with The Tower District Brewfest. The weather forecast looks to be just about perfect with the end of 3 digit temperatures and the right amount of sunshine. Great food, great people and great brews. Don’t miss it... because it just won’t be the same without you.

“Sample lagers, ports, ales, IPAs, stouts, ciders and many other specialty brews”

The Tower District Brewfest is sponsored by Tioga-Sequoia Brewing Company, Bencomo’s Home Brew Supply and the Tower District Marketing Committee. Abundant Harvest OrganicsSimply Bringing You the Family Farm

KINGSBURG, CA - It is not difficult to see the surrounding land, but it’s often overlooked that food is grown on either

side of the highways and freeways driven every day. Many Fresno residents have fruits and vegetables as neighbors and others live only a few miles away from them; but at least once a week everyone still drives to a store to buy their gro-ceries. What if you knew who grew the potatoes or apples you bought at the store? Well, Dennis Rosales has brought pro-duce from surrounding organic farms together in one location for residents of Fresno and Clovis to pick up. Dennis has been providing this service for the last seven years, and recently has changed his location to Kristina’s Natural Ranch Market. Abundant Harvest Organics (AHO) in Kingsburg is where the produce, from four-to-six farmers, is gathered, boxed, and delivered weekly to Dennis. AHO is a farm-share delivery service and each week subscribers place an order of produce and within days that same produce is picked from a certified organic farm and deliv-ered to their city. Alongside their weekly delivery box, subscribers can now add-on bulk produce, ready-made meals and desserts, dried or fresh herbs, raw milk, pastured eggs, and many more organic products. It is truly a onestop shop for organic grocery shopping. Abundant Harvest is run by the Peterson Family who wanted to provide nutri-tional food free of pesticides and is designed for consumers to know exactly where their food was coming from. For this reason every box comes with a newsletter providing the names and emails of the farmers with the produce they pro-vided for the weekly share. The Peterson Family also provides weekly insight to Uncle Vern’s life, a character Vernon created to share his experi-ences. His stories go beyond his farm experience and also venture to offer encouragement and at times religious guidance. Vernon Peterson, also known as “Uncle Vern” by his subscribers, is Owner of Abun-dant Harvest Organics. He and Dennis met in 2000 at a church in Kingsburg. A year before launching AHO, Vernon explained his concept to Dennis and Dennis saw it as an opportunity to help family farmers with whom he attended

church. Soon after getting started, Dennis was one of the very first Community Hosts with only 25+ subscribers. The numbers kept growing until he reached his current 40+ subscribers. Each week the box is built by Vernon’s wife Carol and Vernon’s son Erik to provide a variety of fruits, veggies, and herbs. From there the produce is picked, packed and sent out to subscribers, all within days of hanging on vines, trees, or dug in dirt. “There’s a lot that goes into making Abundant Harvest Organics work, but for us it’s the relationships that matter; the community of people we’re informing about a farmer’s life and where their food is coming from; with our Abundant Harvest Kitchen it’s about providing delicious organic food for busy people. I feel likewe’re all connected by what we serve at our dinner table,” says Heather Mondello, Dennis believed in this tough market being more convenient would allow him to host more people so he bought a truck and delivered to various communities. However, in the last few months, he’s realized he could no longer keep traveling around and began looking for a location where people would come pick up their produce. As time has it, Kristina’s Natural Ranch Market was looking to have some of Abundant Harvest’s product in its store. In no time the store became the new drop off site, though Den-nis adds, “[He is] currently in discussions with

several other businesses where [he] can make deliveries available to a larger portion of Fresno/Clovis subscribers. One ideal location would be Guliano’s Fruits, Nuts & Veggies so people in Oakhurst may have a convenient place to shop us.” Abundant Harvest Organics launched a new adventure last Winter when they opened the Abundant Harvest Kitchen. The kitchen is an opportunity for subscribers to add to their boxes organic prepared frozen meals and des-serts. Mr. Peterson adds, “Just like many of you, we have been on a journey to live and eat more healthfully. Our desire for affordable, chemical-ly unaltered food led us to develop Abundant Harvest Organics and the Abundant Harvest Kitchen. This one-stop pick-up saves you time, money and simplifies your life. The best part? Every week you and your family enjoy seasonal, fresh, organic pro-duce and meals at an affordable price,” explains Mr. Peterson.

Oils in the Kitchen Cooking with Essential Oils

Not only are therapeutic-grade essen-tial oils good for your overall health and wellness, they are a wonderful

tool to have handy in the kitchen. Since most single oils are safe to ingest, using them while cooking and baking is con-venient and adds that additional layer of health benefits to your foods. Most people flavor their foods with dried herbs or fresh herbs. Dried herbs tend to lose their flavor over time. There is really no way to know just how long they have been inside that bottle or sitting on a warehouse shelf. How many bottles of dried herbs have you thrown away in your lifetime? Not only do dried herbs lose their health benefits quickly but they also become a waste of money since we throw away far too much of it. For some of us, maintaining a supply of fresh herbs means daily trips to the market. No one wants potentially moldy basil in their recipe. But daily trips for fresh items does not always fit into the schedule. This is no reason, however, to sacrifice the health benefits of your favorite herbs and spices. Using liquid therapeutic-grade essential oils, on the other hand, is conve-nient, affordable, and promotes health. The shelf life of therapeutic-grade essential oils

is far longer than any dried or fresh herbs. Store them in a cool and dry area away from sunlight, and they will last longer than it takes you to use the entire bottle. They are also more affordable given that one drop is all you need for most recipes. Consider that a 15ml bottle contains over 250 drops, that handy bottle will enhance countless recipes. Another benefit of using liquid therapeutic-grade essential oils in recipes means that your picky eaters in the family cannot see the herbs. Some kids do not like to see the little green things floating in their soup. Others will fuss about the textures in their dinner. Since oils are liquid, no one can see them or complain about their texture. Kids, and fussy adults alike, gain the health benefits from the oils without the com-plaints or questions about what is floating around in the sauce on their plate! Outsmart those high-maintenance eaters in your home with oils. There are a wide variety of ther-apeutic-grade essential oils to use with both cooking and baking. Some can be used for both. For example, cooking with basil, thyme, oregano, marjoram, fennel, and tarragon spice up any recipe. Baking with cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon bark, orange, tangerine, peppermint, and even lavender can make your tongue dance a gig and ask for more. Therapeutic-grade essential oils are also a wonderful addition to your water glass. Just a drop or two of lemon, orange, peppermint, or grapefruit make ordinary water into an extraordinary treat. And you get the health benefits in addition to the dy-namic flavor. Carry a bottle of your favorite oil in your purse or briefcase so that you

have it handy for every meal. Be sure to pick up the next copy of the Valley’s Nickel to learn more about the health benefits of the oils men-tioned in this article. You can also call me at 559-400-1352 with your specific questions. I love to talk about oils. Buy your oils from me and spend more than $25 receive a FREE oil-infused lip balm

Texas Reds in a BlanketA Fun Recipe for Kids

Cooking with kids can be a challenge, but there’s no need to tackle hollan-daise or souffles. When looking for

a kid-friendly recipe, choose something that’s simple and hands-on. For example, the following recipe for Texas Reds in a Blanket involves spreading cream cheese, folding refrigerated crescent roll dough and sprinkling cinnamon sugar, giving junior pastry chefs plenty to do. The accompanying sauce only requires the use of a microwave, though you should handle any hot bowls and cookie sheets yourself. Use Texas Rio Star Grapefruit, which is sweeter than other varieties of grapefruit. The grapefruit season runs from October to May. It’s important to select fruit during the time they would naturally be available. Their flavors are much more pronounced. When buying grapefruit, look for fruits that feel heavy for their size, as that indicates a juicy fruit. Texas Reds in a Blanket Makes four servings. Although, you may think about doubling up on the ingredients as these are sure to go quick.

Ingredients:

2 Texas Rio Star Grapefruit1/4 teaspoon cinnamon3 tablespoons cream cheese1 (8 ounce) roll refrigerated reduced fat crescent dinner rolls1/4 teaspoon cinnamon1 tablespoon granulated sugar

3 tablespoons granulated sugar1/4 cup sour cream1 tablespoon maple syrup

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahren-heit.

2. Remove grapefruit segments; place on paper towels to remove excess moisture. Set aside.

3. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and cream cheese spread.

4. Separate crescent dough into triangles, and lay on wax paper. Spread each with creamed cheese.

5. Place three grapefruit segments on wide end of each triangle; roll each trian-gle into crescent shape enclosing grape-fruit segments.

6. Combine 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and 1 tablespoon sugar on waxed paper; roll grapefruit crescent in cinnamon sugar; Place on a parchment-lined cookie sheet.

7. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown.

8. Finely chop remaining grapefruit segments; place in small bowl with three tablespoons sugar, sour cream and maple syrup. Cook in microwave on high for about one to two minutes, or until it starts to boil.

9. Drizzle sauce over crescents, or serve as a dipping sauce.

And that’s it! Enjoy!

Animal Rescue of FresnoHeaven can wait.

It is no secret that there is more animals without homes in the Central Valley than there are people who are able to take them

in and make them a part of their family. It’s a common site to see a random dog attempting to cross a busy street, walk along the shoulder of a treacherous highway or see them hiding in filthy conditions away from the hands of human beings. And as hopeless as it may seem that we’ll never be able to rescue them all, a kind-hearted shelter shows its face and lends a helping hand. In this issue of The Valley’s Nickel we wanted to introduce you to one of the few organizations in the Central Valley who are working very hard to make a difference. Animal Rescue of Fresno A No Kill Dog Adoption Center is all about dogs; mutts, mongrels, critters, canines, characters. A no-kill dog shelter since 1998, and unlike a lot of shelters ARF is actually a completely volunteer run organization, dependent upon the kindness of strangers, the generous donations of local businesses, and the benevolence of dog lovers throughout the Central Valley. Our four-legged friends come from various high kill shelters in Fresno, Clovis and beyond; from owner surrenders, and from our network of Foster families. Shelter dogs are chosen upon the passing of a designated tem-perament test (touching of ears, peeking into mouths, etc.) to determine their friendliness to people, and then relocated to the safe and compassionate environment of ARF. There, they are loved, cherished, and basically spoiled rotten until they find a fur-ever home of their very own. All our furry residents spend their days mingling with other dogs in spacious play yards, chasing balls, chewing toys, splashing

in pools, and generally enjoying the good life. Something, they all deserve. At night, each lucky dog snoozes softly in a cozy kennel, burrowed deep under a cuddly warm blanket. Okay, and we’ll admit, they may just be going to bed with the occasional treat. Animals with ARF are given a unique opportunity to help them find their forever family by taking them on a road trip and bringing them to other states. Several times a year, Animal Rescue of Fresno drives their colorfully decorated “Heaven Can Wait” van to the SoHumane facility in Medford, Oregon, where many lucky dogs are quickly adopted. In addition, more fortunate critters are taken to Minnesota’s and Santa Rosa’s “Compassion

Without Borders”, where they all have a better chance of finding their new families. Animal Rescue of Fresno is always in need of contributions from the community to help make sure they can continue doing what they do. And it doesn’t have to be a financial contribution, there are a lot of different ways the average person can give to the shelter. Do-nated items are always appreciated, and ARF accepts everything from towels and blankets to general office supplies like stamps and legal sized envelopes. Volunteering is another way that members of the community can donate to the organization. Our facility houses more than

50 dogs! Meeting all of their needs requires quite a bit of work from all of the volunteers. ARF relies on those volunteers to operate and maintain the facility. If you think this would be a great fit for you and you’d like to help us out, send an email to [email protected]. If you would like to find out more about Animal Rescue of Fresno, or if you’re interested in finding out about more ways that you can help, please visit our website at www.arf-fresno.com.
