Presidents Message
MEMBERS: Your 2015 VTV dues must be paid in
by 11/15 in order to avoid a $10 penalty.
We would like to welcome new member Charlie Bish-
op to the Vapor Trail Vettes. Charlie just bought a
‘09 Black C6 and is a friend of Bee Jay’s. We look
forward to meeting you, Charlie. Also, past members
Jim & Mary Carson rejoined VTV. Even though Jim &
Mary retired from the club for a period of time they
never stopped helping us set up the annual rallye
route or work other events. Welcome back!
A big thank you to Barry & Judy for organizing the
Mendenhalls Museum social and John and Debbie for
taking the photos, writing the article for the newslet-
ter and putting together the quiz. There was certain-
ly a lot to see and great food.
Larry Wright recently sent out the ballot for the 2015
E-Board election. The new board will be announced
at the November meeting. Thank you, Larry for being
a great poll worker. Don’t forget to vote!
Reminder...bring a check or cash to the November
meeting if you plan on attending the Holiday Extrava-
ganza at the Melodrama on December 6th. Hector will
be collecting money at the November meeting. If you
are interested in inviting a friend we normally have
seats available.
Joan and Roberta are working on the annual Christmas
dinner and gift exchange this year. They will be send-
ing out a flyer soon with the details. This is always a
fun event and a lot of laughs exchanging gifts.
I will be in Washington State the month of November
but will keep in touch through email. There will be no
November newsletter. Barry will be chairing the No-
vember meeting.
Have a safe and fun Halloween and a wonderful
Thanksgiving with friends and family. Until Decem-
ber...Save the Wave! Gale

October Meeting Minutes By Bev Erickson Gale Haugen brought the meeting to order at
6:55 p.m. after our group met in the Bristo
Room of Home Motors. Home Motors is being
renovated so our normal conference room was
not available. We had a beautiful supper donat-
ed by Patty and Bill Santmyer Judy Fitzjarrell
brought a variety of fabulous desserts. There
were 23 members present. Clay Beck, Doug
and Debbie Chase, Bev and Cliff Erickson, Barry
and Judy Fitzjarrell, John and Deb Mahoney,
Doug Nicoll, Gale Haugen and Hector Paz,
Charles Robertson, Bill and Patty Santmyer, Jan
Webb, Michele Watson, Gerry White, Brian We-
ber and Roberta Haylock, and Larry Wright, and
Charlie and Joan Perry. Business ~ Gale Haugen
Gale asked for approved September minutes
and Cliff Erickson first the motion and Bill
Santmyer seconded it. Jerry White mentioned
that the Auto Cross is this coming Oct. 4th
weekend. Gale introduced our new member
Chuck Robertson. Nominations...Larry is running nominations for
the e-board. Larry passed the sheets around to
everyone to list their nominations, no more than
two nominations for office. He will call those
that are not present or email. We will count the
nominations. We will take the number 1 person
then number 2 then if there is a tie there will
be a 3rd person added to the ballot. We will
have the ballots back tonight and the 10th of
October will be the deadline for nominations and
we will vote at the November meeting. Gale
reminded us that in the past Larry always con-
tacts each person to see if they want to run if
they are nominated in answer to Cliff Erickson's
question. Also you can nominate someone for
more than one office. Debbie said can we nom-
inate yourself and Larry said yes just put your
name of the ballot.
Proposed VTV NCCC sanctioned event
dates for 2015. Discussed the email from
Tom Dobyns on number of autocross Porsche
club is holding and their desire for VTV club to
hold more than three. Gale started out with
three dates skipping January and February be-
cause of the weather. The three months that
look really good are May, August and Octo-
ber. We are going to move the annual blast
event back to September.
October Meeting Minutes By Bev Erickson Gale will call Chuck to question two dates the
Porsche club is holding autocrosses. The dates
are not on a Saturday. September 25th and
26th for the annual blast. John will send Joe
Orrico the following dates for the NCCC calen-
dar for our 2015 sanctioned events:
2 May - Autocross 2 Sanctions
11 July - Autocross 2 Sanctions
25 & 26 September - Annual Blast Car Show &
Rally 6 Sanctions
3 October - Autocross 2 Sanctions
Christmas Party… Joan Perry, Mary and Rob-
erta are working on the Christmas Party for
us. They are tentatively looking at Dec. 12th
for the party. Members may have to partially
pay for dinners and wine this year due to the
budget. They discussed several locations such
as Rooster Creek other northern restaurants.
Santa Maria appears to be cheaper. They also
will check Cottonwood Winery. Joan will do
some calling. Hector feels that we should all
pay for our own alcohol or have it catered and
bring in own bottle. Other members agreed
that we should pay for some of the costs. VTV Trailer location... Barry Fitzjarrell dis-
cussed the need to move that VTV autocross
trailer from Hector’s business parking lot due
to the huge influx of business and their need
for all the parking spaces. Barry checked on
the cost to rent an area to park the trailer and
also shared that Clay would be willing to have
it parked on his property. A vote was taken to
pay or park at Clay’s house. Clay will store the
trailer. We also need a storage unit for misc.
VTV stuff that is currently stored in Hector &
Gale’s personal storage. The cost would be
$60 a month. Gale suggested that we table
the discussion until January in order to com-
plete the remaining agenda items. Certificate of Appreciation…Gale passed
around the proposed certificate to the Santa
Maria Inn. No changes were noted so Gale will
frame it and deliver to the hotel.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m. The next
meeting is November 5th in Pismo Beach at Marie
Callendar's.
Tech Corner ~ Coolant Check By Clay Beck
While I think that we all pretty much understand
the make up/qualities of antifreeze or coolant it is
more important than ever to be able to judge the
condition of that liquid in our cooling systems.
Scale and deposits can eat away at our metal parts
especially aluminum. How can we, inexpensively
monitor the condition of our coolant I'd always
wondered until I saw this neat tip that I thought I'd
share. Whether it is Green, Red, blue or some oth-
er color you can easily check it without anything
more than digital volt-ohmeter. Simply attach the
positive lead to the metal part of the radiator (I
wedge it carefully into the fins to hold it) and the
negative probe into the coolant itself. A voltage
reading of .2 volts is considered good and a read-
ing of .5 volts should be considered marginal. If
you are above .7 volts your coolant has failed and
you should flush and clean your system right away!
This works surprising well and is so easy to do. I'm
not completely comfortable with some of the 5 year
claims about coolant life so changing the coolant
utilizing this method without worry as there is no
guesswork. Try it!
October 4th VTV Autocross The last autocross of 2014 is behind us but the be-
ginning of a long winter for our club member Bee
Jay Jones. He will be spending a lot of time in that
new garage working on his ‘79 Corvette.
We will let Bee Jay
explain how he
managed to dam-
age a car built for
speed and corner-
ing.
“On lap one, in
the slaloms, my right front sus-
pension collapsed.

October 4th VTV Autocross ~ Cont’d
The ball joints, springs, a arms all seemed at-tached, so I had the car towed home. Once on
the lift, this is what I have. The Lower A arm mount, which is welded to the frame, ripped from
the frame. The GM welds were not stout enough to handle the increased stresses of racing with big
fat rubber. I’ll need to heat and bang the frame and mount back into shape and have a talented
welder (not me) weld it all together again, but stronger. The guys on the
forum can’t believe I did this.”
All I can say is...the
guys in the forum have not seen you
drive, Bee Jay!
OUCH!

Mendenhall Museum Social by John Mahoney
Saturday night’s get together was one of the
best socials ever attended, I felt. We cruised
down as a group and maintained a nice gather-
ing all the way down to Buellton. Barry & Judy
were waiting to help us get safely parked next
to the museum. From the time we entered the
museum we were welcomed by the owner Mr
Mendenhall. Barry and Judy explained we had
access to all the areas and there was a lot to
see. We arrived about 4PM and the weather
was perfect. This gave us time to view the out-
side exhibits with full daylight even though the
neon signs were already turned-on. After ad-
miring the many outside exhibits we spread
around to the numerous garages to admire the
many signs, cars, gas pumps and various petro-
lainia including lots of racing history. Between
the race cars and signs I tried to take every-
thing in and experience part of the recorded his-
tory encapsulated in the beautiful facility. I
have always wanted a two bedroom house with
a four car garage and this was even better. We
viewed a one bedroom home in its entirety with
the beautifully displayed ten car garages, de-
pending on how you count the various locations.
This also included an office and boneyard for
works in progress. For anyone that enjoys vin-
tage history there was something for everyone.
The dinner bell rang promptly at 6PM and we
enjoyed a beautifully prepared Tri-Tip dinner
that included great sides. Earlier we were pro-
vided appetizers that included oak smoked sau-
sage that was to enjoy to the fullest with nu-
merous beverages available. After dinner the
setting sun provided great opportunities for
photography shots of the neon signs. We con-
tinued visiting the collection and making sure
we took every moment in. We did have invited
guests that also seemed to enjoy the activities
as much as we did as a Corvette Club. We
gathered before anyone had to leave for a VTV
photo and there were numerous smiles on eve-
ryone’s face. If you were not there you missed
a beautiful event. Deb and I would like to really
thank Barry and Judy for taking the lead and
making this event happen. It was the best I
could have imagined.
As I stated earlier I tried to gather everything in
and remember all the history that was collected
in this excellent museum.
