A Weekend for Champions

Written by Tom Hoeppner On Saturday, March 22nd, the Rocky Mountain Region (RMR) celebrated the past year's events with its members. The banquet served as the mechanism to help everyone recall many of the events; the new friendships that were created; other friendships that were made stronger; and to congratulate those that participated in the various scoring categories.

During the banquet, a silent auction was held, and it was a HUGE success. The funds raised will help our Region continue doing great things for the RMR members. The event was held at the Long Tree Golf Club, and they did themselves proud. From the minute planning began, to the time our last member walked out the door on Sunday, the Lone Tree team made sure everything was perfect, and it was. The Region also held 2 poker runs, and 2 rallies during the weekend. While the weather tried to mess things up Saturday evening, and we got a little snow, events continued. I think it's safe to say, the rallies generated more laughter and stories than a person could imagine...and I'm glad to report...Barb H and Donna R DID make it to the end of the Sunday rallye, even though rumor has it they traveled some 452 miles on the 44 mile course; had to stop for 3 potty breaks; and needed multiple stops for sodas and food. The great news is that they (like everyone) had fun...and reportedly, more fun than they would have with their husbands. If a person tried to include all the names of those that contributed to the weekend's success, there’d be a lot omitted. However, I think Lorren L. deserves a huge thank you for leading the effort for the banquet. As far as the silent auction went....hmmm...we had so many donated items that we had to ask for more display tables 2 different times (not bad planning...just so many people contributed). Talk about members and sponsors opening up their hearts and wallets! THANK YOU ALL! Cheryl C. (TORCA) and Gwenda V. deserve the “Great Job Award” for the wonderful display of items, but especially for the work that went into preparing all the items for bids. It was also a good thing that RMR members had all the hotel rooms. The after banquet party was also a blast...for those that can remember all the details. For those members that came to the event...thank you. For those of you that couldn't make it, we hope to see everyone next year!

Special Thank You for

Silent Auction Contributors

I doubt anyone could have imagined the final result of the silent auction at the Rocky Mountain Region banquet. While Lorren Loewen and Tom Hoeppner took the original idea (for the auction) from Pete Urenda, it was originally hoped we’d get enough items to make the banquet extra fun, while also trying to raise a little extra money for the region. Thoughts of making $500 - $1000 seemed optimistic…but that was before we saw the out-pouring of support from most all the Clubs. The final result was that attendees got some great deals, but also that the Region received over $2500 from the auction. In addition to the entire CSCC Club donating $200 that was used to purchase 2 jackets, here is the list of more specific contributors from our Club. Please note that this list does not include all those that contributed their time and help in making this such a huge success. Thanks to everyone that helped, and those that bid on the items. Donors included: Daniels Long Chevrolet, Cole Promo, Tom/Barb Hoeppner, Walt Jenkins, Laurie/Lorren Loewen, Roger Miller, Rob Miskowitch, Pikes Peak International Raceway , Carol Reel, Rex Tire Inc, Bud/Anne Silvers, Vicki/Tom Ury, Gwenda/Larry Valentine

Sunday Cruisin’ by Chris Capshaw

On March 30th

ten club members were suffering from a mild case of Spring Fever, and needed to cure their symptoms by stretching the legs of their Corvettes. The group met at Pikes Peak Harley Davidson, from where they cruised through Garden of the Gods, and then proceeded west along Highway 24. In Woodland Park the caravan stopped only long enough for a quick coffee break, and to talk “cars” with a few other enthusiasts they met. Their treatment continued as they travelled along Highway 67 to Deckers. Here the patients stopped to allow about a hundred motorcyclists the opportunity to admire America’s only true sports car. As the Vettes pulled in, the jaws of the motorcyclists dropped open, and they turned off their bikes in a show of respect. To prevent a relapse of symptoms, our club members soon mounted up and continued along the twisty County Road 126, stopping only once along the way for some photo opportunities. When the group arrived in Pine, their internal fuel tanks needed filling, so a stop was made at Zoka’s Restaurant and Bar. We took the staff by surprise (only because we had no cellular service), and were presented a scrumptious lunch.

The afternoon medication was administered by continuing on County Road 126, Highway 285, C470, and Highway 85 to Sedalia, where a short pit stop was made. The final dose of medicine was applied when the group cruised along Highway 105 and back

home. All patients fully recovered from their bout of Spring Fever, and are looking forward to the next time they succumb to the illness and need treatment; which may be sometime in April.

All spit and shined, but nothing to do on

a Saturday night? John Gue passes this information

along from the organizer of the regular Saturday night place to be with a car “For those of you who don't know, it appears that we may have found a permanent place for the Saturday get-together we've been doing for years. And nicely enough, it's at the old Cub Foods on Austin Bluffs [4300 block] where we've been for a couple of years. The store was bought by a church that's making a big renovation project of it, and it looks like they're very amenable to us continuing to use it on Saturdays. It also means that the garden shop that set up there the last couple years probably won't be there again. I don't think anything is cast in stone just yet, but let's just say the foundation has been laid and it looks good for us. There will be more on this later as things develop.” Most Saturday nights you can find some CSCC members there with their Corvette or other unique car from their garage. Drop by and check out the action.

Highway Beautification by Tom Hoeppner

On April 12th

, approximately 30 members showed up to clean the 1-mile “Adopt a Highway” area of Highway 85 in Widefield, Colorado. Just one of the many things our club does for the community, we picked up lots of trash and debris. It seems like there’s always some sort of unique story that arises…and this effort was no different. While everyone found the typical (bottles; paper, cans; etc.), some also found skeletal remains of a couple animals. However, perhaps the most unique find was a current passport. It was set aside and later in the morning, it was turned over to a police officer. Who knows if there’s any unique story associated with it, but as the officer stated, the owner will probably be shocked that it was found on the roadside. After the team cleaned the area, many went to a Village Inn and enjoyed a late breakfast; pie; and fellowship. Thanks to everyone that participated.

The Good and the Bad…..

The bad news Chris Capshaw and son Jonathan were in an ugly crash when a truck ran a stop sign at Highway 50 and 115. The good news is, they are ok, and have already replaced the totaled yellow 2006 Corvette Coupe with something newer and just as special. Chris said it was a 4-passenger Vette that day – Chris, Jonathan, and 2 Guardian Angels.

SINKHOLE RESCUE COMPLETED By Barrett Benson

As I reported last month, 5 of the 8

Corvettes were retrieved from the sinkhole at the National

Corvette Museum (NCM). Now there’s good and bad news

concerning the remaining three vehicles!

The good news is that the three remaining Vettes I rescued: the

prototype Black 1993 ZR-1 Spyder on April 1, the White 1½-

millionth Corvette on April 3, and the Red 2001 Mallett Hammer

Z06 on April 9. Bits and pieces of the Corvettes were also

recovered to aid in the restorations. During the tedious process of

removing sinkhole dirt with a heavy-duty vacuum and excavating

equipment around the visible portion of the Spyder’s left rear

quarter, the 1½-millionth Corvette was discovered. The 2001 Z06

Red Mallett Hammer was found on April 8, upside down with nose

pointing toward the Spire above.

The bad news is the three Corvettes are in very poor shape. The

Spyder is in worse shape than the previously recovered 1984

PPG Pace Car, and the 1½-millionth Vette is in worse shape than

the Spyder. (Diana and Mike Dittman’s photos, e-mailed to CSCC

members last month, show the extent of the damage to all 5

previously rescued Corvettes.)

As all Corvette enthusiasts know, the ZR-1’s were not

convertibles, but GM made a few convertible prototypes to take to

various car shows. The Spyder, originally a full performance 1990

ZR-1 painted Sebring Silver with a Neutrino Yellow interior,

debuted at the 1991 North American Auto Show before being

repainted black with interior changed to red. It has many one-of-a

kind features including custom billet aluminum wheels, tonneau

cover with waterfall, a windshield half the normal height, lowered

seats mounted directly to the floor, narrowed side mirrors, and

side covers. The first concept Corvette built on the assembly line,

the Spyder’s louvered hood was signed by everyone involved with

building the car. One of my favorite Corvettes displayed at the

Museum, I made it a point to admire the Spyder on every visit.

The Mallett Hammer took a lot of punishment from sinkhole rocks,

found with only a frame, and wheels attached. The donor had

purchased it new and highly modified it before giving it to the

Museum in December 2013. Present during its removal, he said it

looked like a piece of tin foil as it was recovered and placed on a

flat bed truck.

The “Great 8” display of the sinkhole Corvettes officially opened

April 14 for viewing through the Museum’s 20th

Anniversary Event

August 27-30, 2014. Links to photos, videos, and information

related to the sinkhole are available on NCM’s web site, with latest

updates on the Museum’s Facebook Fan page at:

Corvette Invasion –

Rumor has it 3 truckloads of Corvettes are arriving at Daniels Long Chevrolet. Of the approximately 17 Corvettes, the years range from 1992 to a 2014 triple black convertible, Z51, 3LT. If you are in the market, or just curious, see Mike Neufeld at Daniels Long for mileage, pricing, and warranty details. Mike says this will be the largest pre-owned selection they have ever had at Daniels Long.

However, if a member chooses to “opt-out” of the Club email distribution list, they will no longer receive ANY

inter-club emails. Don’t miss out on important updates, spur-of-the-moment activities, or other opportunities for

fun with Corvette friends.
