What a great year the DRC had teaming with our homeowners to build community!

Two community clean up days – First one in June and the last one in October. The community collected 45 roll offs of trash, misc. landscape items, along with misc. household items. Plus, we did appreciate the assistance in June from the Boy and Girls Scout troops, and the Falcon Spirit Squad cleaning up the trails! Looking forward to more participation next year from volunteers.

The DRC showcased 11 homes in the yard of the Month from July through October!

The DRC assisted with Falcon Freedom Days the last day of June.

The DRC held two New Resident Orientations.

New Resident Orientations (NRO) are set up to educate new residents, and are reminders for seasoned homeowners. Residents learned about the Design Review Council (DRC), how to find important information through the various Meridian Ranch websites, highlights regarding the governing documents and assisting with improvements. The Metro District Manager also gives an overview of the responsibilities of the District and the Rec Center manager talks about upcoming events. We have three NRO’s planned for 2020. Look for the postcard invite in the mail.

Let’s not forget the Christmas Light Contest! December 10th and 12th! Winners will be posted in the January newsletter and also on the Association Newsfeeds!

ICE CRYOSPA

The HOTTEST place to CHILL!!!

Just for Grins Kids & Family Dental owners Dr. Melissa Talbott and her husband, Jason, are excited to announce they anticipate opening ICE CryoSpa at the end of November, 2019 at the Shops at Meridian Ranch.

Dr. Melissa and Jason commented, “Since we opened Just For Grins Kids & Family Dental in August of 2018, Meridian Ranch residents have helped us grow and provide the community with great dental care. Thank you for your support! After considerable research, planning and hard work, we have decided to move our vision center to our southern office located at 6436 S US HWY 85/87 Ste C, Fountain, CO 80817 to make room for Ice CryoSpa. We are Falcon residents and as such wanted to bring something fun and unique to the Falcon community that would offer state of the art recovery treatments in a spa inspired setting that, up to now, were only offered in Colorado Springs.”

Jason added, “My wife has always wanted to open up a medical spa and I am all about fitness and health, so we combined the best of both health services and created Ice CryoSpa! We will be offering Cryotherapy, which has been proven to provide pain management, migraine therapy, mood enhancement, a decrease in anxiety and depression, a boost in metabolism, weight loss, body sculpting and contouring, improvement with eczema and other skin conditions, esthetics, a reduction in arthritic pain and inflammation, as well as recovery from injuries, sports, and post workouts. Cryotherapy will be offered by certified technicians, allowing you to live happier, healthier and more pain free lives. But at Ice CryoSpa it’s not just Cryotherapy, it’s so much more.

“Thank you and we look forward to providing you and your family all your dental, health and wellness needs.” - Jason and Dr. Melissa Talbott

Increased security measures are taking place at Falcon High School. As a result of the passing of the November Bond measure in 2015, Falcon HS has installed an additional security check point in our main entrance, heightening the level of student and staff safety in the building. Part of this bond was to enhance safety and security on campus. The entry was installed over October break. This entry gives the Falcon HS security department additional control on visitor building entry.

Holiday Season: I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season that is upon us. We wish you and your loved ones all the best during this time of celebrations and family gatherings. Our District employees also enjoy these times. The Meridian Ranch Recreation Center will be closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Recreation Center will operate with limited hours from 8:00 – 2:00 on Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve. The District’s administrative office (located at The Shops) will be closed Christmas Eve at noon through Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve at noon through New Year’s Day.

Critical Infrastructure Protection and Resilience

On a more serious note, October 28th was the Nation’s First Responders Day honoring those career and volunteer professionals who mobilize and head into disaster areas when others are evacuating. This includes Public Works professionals who operate our public water, wastewater, and stormwater systems. Also, November was Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience Month dedicated to recognizing the importance of protecting our Nation’s infrastructure for our national security and resilience in responding to natural and man-made disasters. These are relatively new issues in our national history and can be traced back to the events of September 11, 2001 and several recent major weather events including hurricanes, droughts, and wildfires.

How often do you think of things that sustain the American way of life? Any student of military history will know that wars are fought with both military engagements and with disruption of the enemy’s supply chains and critical infrastructure. The ancient Roman Empire would often use their army to besiege a city by surrounding it and cutting off water and food supplies. The Allied Forces during WWII prevented critical supplies from reaching Japan by controlling shipping routes in the Pacific and overland routes in southeast Asia. In addition to the threat of war

and terrorist attacks, our country has recently experienced extreme weather conditions causing much damage and disruption of lives. The threats to our critical infrastructure continue to evolve. As our world grows more interconnected, and our infrastructure grows more interdependent with other systems and functions, we must look at our risks from both a cyber and a physical perspective. Today, economic prosperity, health and safety rely on a complex network of physical and cyber systems, all working together in harmony. A major storm or wildfire can interrupt or destroy a region’s power grid, and with a simple email, a determined adversary can then wreak havoc on that same infrastructure from the other side of the world. Either way, the impacts from the loss of power can quickly ripple through the regions, impacting emergency response, transportation, financial transactions, and clean water supplies.

We live in an area that is home to many of our nation’s warriors and security professionals and we owe them a great debt. My own father was a war hero from WWII and Korea and survived 2 years of POW camps in Korea. However, America’s national security and economic prosperity are increasingly dependent upon critical infrastructure that is at risk from a variety of hazards and threats, both natural and man-made, including aging or failing infrastructure, extreme weather, cyberattacks, or evolving terrorism threats that impact our economy and communities. Critical infrastructure security and resilience requires a clear understanding of the risks we face and a whole-community effort that involves partnership between public, private, and nonprofit sectors. In 2018, Congress approved the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Act creating the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Also in 2018, Congress passed the America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018 which requires that public water and wastewater systems conduct a risk and resilience assessment (RRA) and then prepare an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) to manage the risks. During 2020, the Meridian Metropolitan

District will be working on our own local RRA/ERP.

Our water and wastewater systems are underground and out of sight, and therefore are easily taken for granted. Our drainage systems likewise, are often forgotten until a major storm overwhelms their capacity and stormwater damage becomes visible. Here at the Meridian Metropolitan District our daily interaction with our residents is often related to parks, open space, and recreation activities. These are also important public services that impact our quality of life. However, during the holiday season when we often pause to give thanks, lets remember to honor and appreciate our first responders, and our operators of critical public infrastructure. I’ll start here:

Braden, Kevin, David, Pat, thanks for keeping our water and wastewater systems running 24/7. Jennette, Tobi, Stephanie, Carrie, Deawne, I appreciate your dedication to our IT, financial and administrative systems that support the operations of our community’s critical public services. Jon, Zak, Andrew, thanks for maintaining our irrigation systems and stormwater drainage facilities and for clearing snow on those dark and cold mornings. Ryan, Andrea, and team, thanks for providing our recreation and sports programs that add so much to our quality of life and enjoyment of Meridian Ranch. Finally, to our governing board – Butch, Wayne, Bill, Mike, Tom – thanks for your experience and wisdom in forming the policies and financial plans that guide the daily operations of the District, and thanks for giving me the privilege of serving this great community.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all,
