W elcome to the first edition of the “Viking.”

i hope you enjoy reading about all of the

wonderful things that are happening at

your Alma Mater. it is with great pride

and pleasure that we send you a magazine that depicts life

at Archbishop Wood now, through stories and pictures from

current students and alumni. Please pay particular attention to

the story about Patricia Fogel, Class of 1971. The inside back cover of the magazine is my dream — along

with many of you — for a much needed Sports Complex at Archbishop Wood. As you can see from the drawings, plans are underway, but i will need your help! A feasibility study is in progress and will be followed by a Capital Campaign. i hope that you will help us to realize this dream for the Vikings.

Many of you have helped to support the Memorial garden throughout the years, and we send a special “thank you” to Al Lentz ’81 and Steve Happ ’81 for the beautiful fountain that they recently installed in the memory of our beloved Richard “R” kelly, and to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Fonash for their generous donation to our “Exploration 21” science lab.

The Viking community is thriving, with a freshman class of

277 and an overall enrollment of 1,050 students. Our academic,

athletic and activity programs are as strong as ever. Our Class

of 2011 received over $19 million in scholarships and grants.

This school year Wood has seventeen neumann Scholars, two

national Merit Semifinalist, five Commended students, and

twelve Diocesan Scholars. Furthermore, sixty of our students

currently receive three college credits each through our Dual

Enrollment Program with Bucks County Community College.

Our athletic and activity programs speak for themselves, with

two State Basketball Championships, five PCL Champions,

eight District Xii Champions, 125 All Catholic Athletes,

sixteen All State Athletes, seven members of All Catholic Band

and Chorus, a Marching Unit State Championship, and the

RoboVikings victory in the Regional Robotics Championship

for the first time.

The accomplishments of our Vikings go on and on, but

without you, the Alumni, many things would not be possible. i

would like to take a moment and say thank you from the bottom

of my heart for the support that you have shown for your Alma

Mater during the Viking Fund Drive. The response from the

alumni was overwhelming. in fact, your support enabled us to

renovate the Art Room, add another Computer Lab, support

our programs, and enable families to keep their children at

Archbishop Wood to continue their Catholic education. i

thank all of you for your contributions, and i hope that you

will continue to support Archbishop Wood. if you could not

contribute last year, hopefully you will consider your Alma Mater

this year. With your continued support, we can work together to

ensure the good news of the Archbishop Wood Vikings.

Finally, thank you for everything, and may god Bless you

and your families! Enjoy the magazine, and see you soon!

H anna Schoenleber will be a twelfth grade student at Archbishop Wood in September. i have known Hanna since her 9th grade year at Wood. i came to know her because

she suffers from Arthritis. My knowledge of Hannah did not come because she needed special accommodations but rather because she would never accept special treatment.

At the beginning of her sophomore year, Hanna approached me about an idea that she had. Hanna mentioned that she was often in great pain but that her friends, both close and casual, did not understand what it was like to suffer as she did and they especially did not understand when one day she was in pain and the next day she was fine. Often Hanna felt that her fellow students perceived a desire for attention. Hanna’s plan was to make a presentation to our 9th grade students through an ongoing orientation program we have called Wood 101. Her goal was not to gain sympathy for herself but rather to raise the awareness among students of those around them who are different because they cannot do everything that the other students can do or that what they can do one day, they cannot do on another day.

Hanna arranged to have representatives from the Juvenile Arthritis Foundation come to school and along with these representatives Hanna presented her story. The program was so successful and well received that we asked Hanna to again present to our current freshmen. These presentations were given over two days to seven different groups. At the conclusion of the year-long Wood 101 program the students were asked to write about which presentation they found most beneficial. Many students listed Hanna’s presentation on Arthritis as the best. Their comments included:

• “…because it was informative, beneficial and not boring. The speakers were able to get their point across without boring me and making me ignore what they were saying.”

• “…because it was fun personal and informative.”• “it was educational, got us involved and fun.”• “…it was fun and i learned about something

my mom has.”• “i learned a lot on how it affects everyone no

matter how old you are.”• “it was amazing meeting a girl almost my

age going through all that.”• “…because i thought it was interesting to

learn about the body and it runs in my family.”

• “it makes us realize how we should help those who are affected by it.”

A Glowing Letter of Recommendation for Hanna Schoenleber ’12

While these evaluations are those of 9th grade students, it is important to note that these comments were written three months after the presentation was made. The students remembered what Hanna said and more importantly, they learned about how arthritis affects other people.

in addition to working with our school community, Hanna is very involved with the Juvenile Arthritis foundation. Last year Hanna was the Teen Honoree for the Arthritis walk. This past school year, Hanna organized a team of Archbishop Wood students to participate in the annual walk to raise money for the Arthritis Foundation. She has also served as the Master of Ceremonies for the national Juvenile Arthritis Conference.

Within the school community, Hanna is also a member of our Peer Leaders group which works with student in our school and the local elementary school to address Drug and Alcohol concerns. Hanna is also involved in our Community Service Corps. She is an anchor on our morning news program and has had significant roles in our school shows and sings with our choir.

Hanna accomplishes all these things while carrying a rigorous course of study which next year will include two Advanced

Placement classes and a Dual Enrollment class. Hanna is a first honor student and ranks in the top half of the class. Hanna is a great inspiration to all of us. She never lets

her disability get in the way of her goals. She does not complain, nor ask for special treatment. Most people would have no idea of the challenges Hanna faces if it were not for her desire to help her fellow student accept those around them who suffer from any type of disability.

When i review the achievements which qualify a nominee for this award i see Hanna Schoenleber as a perfect candidate. The most obvious qualification is in her School/Community Leadership and Volunteer Work but her participation in peer

leaders helps in conflict resolution, her work in the school plays and our chorus is examples of artistic

expression which promote an understanding and acceptance of people who suffer from a debilitating disease. Hanna’s work with the 9th grade students

not only helped bring an understanding of those who suffer from arthritis but also served as friendship building.

it is with great enthusiasm and conviction that i put the name of Hanna Schoenleber into consideration for the Young Heroes Award.

Fall 2011 | Archbishop Wood 7

Over the last several years Archbishop Wood athletes have participated in the “Athletes Helping Athletes” program in conjunction with the Special Olympics of Bucks County. Here is a great story about Colin Thompson ’12 and his relationship with John Shulby (reprinted with permission of ESPN).

T he measure of Archbishop Wood High School’s Colin Thompson as a football player is a big one. He’s 6-foot-4, 255 pounds and ESPnU’s no. 1 tight end in the class of 2012. But

the measure of Colin Thompson as a young man is even bigger, a fact to which kathy Shulby is only too happy to attest. Shulby’s son, John, has Down syndrome. John met Colin when they were in the eighth grade at Holicong Middle School in Doylestown. Colin was assigned to be John’s buddy at a track meet to ensure he got to all of his events safely.

“That was the beginning of a friendship that has blossomed,” kathy Shulby said. Despite Colin transferring out of Holicong and then going on to a different high school than John Shulby, the two remained close. “it brings tears to my eyes,” kathy Shulby said. “it’s been a wonderful journey for John, Colin and our family.”

Tight end Colin Thompson has modeled his game after nFL stars Jason Witten and Jeremy Shockey. The Shulbys followed Thompson’s football career and went to his games. They befriended his parents. Archbishop Wood High School started a program called Athletes Helping Athletes, and Thompson took an active role. John Shulby became honorary captain of the Vikings football team. “John goes on the field and participates in the coin toss with the captains,” kathy Shulby said. “They play golf together. it’s a friendship that we never expected, and it’s one of the best things to ever happen to John. it’s not just the friendship and acceptance with Colin that’s so great, but also with his teammates. it’s truly been an unbelievable and wonderful experience.”

Colin said he gets just as much of a boost from John as John does him. “John is one of my best friends,” Thompson said. “He is an inspiration to myself and our football team to be better people. He is a great kid, and he will do great things in life. i love him. He’s a big part of my family and our football family.”

none of this is surprising to Steve Devlin. The Archbishop Wood coach encourages his players to be active participants in the community. “We do a lot as a team,” Devlin said. “i want our players to realize just how fortunate they are, and i want them all to do some big things out there. They all need to make an impact, and you can see the happiness they bring to other people. it’s life changing. Each year we always take on an organization and help out. We have done Special Olympics, leukemia. We have done camps for those organizations. it’s been a great experience for everyone.”

Devlin expects Thompson, one of his team captains, to take a lead role on the field and off. “Colin and John have a unique relationship,” Devlin said. “John is such a great kid. it touches your heart to see those two together.” Thompson grew up playing

Student Athletes give Back to the Community

baseball and hockey in addition to football. But he knows what he does best, which is block, catch and run. This four-star prospect is a versatile talent.

“i block well at the point of attack,” Thompson said. “i am also a mismatch in the red zone. i can catch the football. i can play in the slot, motion out of the backfield and play a little fullback. i am a complete player and my coach does a great job of moving me around.”

Last season Thompson caught 13 passes for 208 yards and four touchdowns. But don’t let his stats fool you.

“We spread him around and do a lot of different things,” Devlin said. “Colin has size and is a great leverage blocker. He has hands and runs very good routes. We use him in our play-action game. Colin is smart and very determined. He’s the captain of our team and has been a leader of our team since his sophomore year. That’s just the type of kid he is.”

Thompson has patterned his game after a couple of tight ends who’ve made a big mark in the game -- Jeremy Shockey and Jason Witten.

“i have always admired those two players, especially the way they handle themselves on the field,” Thompson said. “They are tough guys with great hands. They are tremendous blockers and strong runners after the catch. i emulate what they do. They are great tight ends. They were great in college and have been in the pros, too.”

Thompson has already made his college decision. He committed to Florida, giving the gators a prototype tight end. But there was so much more for Thompson about picking UF.

“in the end i just realized that there was no better place for me in the country than Florida,” Thompson said. “i visited 15 schools, and i wanted to find the right place for me. Florida has great football, it’s a great school and gainesville is a great town. Florida is the complete package with great people. The coaching staff is highly respected. i have become friends with them.”

Viking Fund Exceeds goal

Did you know that tuition payments go directly to the Archdiocese to cover the teachers’ salaries and benefits?

Archbishop Wood relies heavily on the Viking Fund to help bridge the gap between the income from the school fees and the expenses to operate the campus, update technology and provide extracurricular activities.

The Viking Fund helps Wood stay on the cutting edge of 21st century learning, while keeping true to its mission of Catholic education. Thank you for giving to the Viking Fund – it is an investment in our future. This past year the Viking Fund raised over $325,000 from 442 donors — a dramatic increase in from previous years.

The best new is that 32 individuals and businesses joined The President’s Leadership Society, lead benefactors who, through their generosity, demonstrate a commitment to the mission of Archbishop Wood High School. Membership in the society is open to all individuals, companies, and foundations that make an annual gift of $1,000 or more. Annually members are invited to a reception hosted by the President and the Board of Advisors. To learn more about the President’s Leadership Society and about The Viking Fund, contact Tim Dunn, Director of Advancement at 215-672-5050, ext. 227 or at [email protected].

in the 2010-11 Viking Fund (formerly the Annual Fund), which ended June 30, 2011, the Wood community again responded most generously with a record $375,000 in contributions! According to Dan Wagner ’91, Viking Fund Chairman, “The word is out. People recognize the value of Wood — the strength and vitality of the school, its students and faculty — and they genuinely want to be a part of this excellent tradition.”

Although this record-setting number is extraordinary, what makes Wood unique are its leadership volunteers: the alumni, parents, Board members and friends who give their time and energy to promote Archbishop Wood High School and its advancement initiatives. “You’re only as good as your volunteers,” said Tim Dunn. “i’ve never worked with a more dedicated and enthusiastic group of volunteers and supporters than those at Wood. We are indeed blessed.”

gifts to the Viking Fund help supplement the operating expenses of Wood, touching all facets of campus life: financial aid and scholarships, teaching resources, computer technology, campus ministry, fine arts, extracurricular activities, and athletics. “When we ask people to support Wood by making a gift to the Viking Fund, we are asking them to invest in the future of Archbishop Wood High School. An investment of this type is not only critical to our ability to keep a Wood education excellent and affordable — but it is also the truest measure of Wood’s value,” said gary Zimmaro, Wood President.

Viking Students benefit from EiTC Program

Thank you for helping Wood provides quality education to our students. A growing number of companies are jumping on

Remember Wood in Your Estate Plans

The Wood Legacy Society membership includes our cherished alumni, parents and friends who, as loyal visionaries and

generous benefactors of our school have included Archbishop Wood in their will or estate plan. Through their Planned gift, they have committed to securing the mission and legacy of Archbishop Wood High School for years to come.

We have received our first Legacy Society gift in school history. The late Patricia Whelan Fogel ’71 included Archbishop Wood in her will. This generous donation of $40,000 will go to a scholarship in her name for incoming freshman from St. Joseph School/ St. Robert School and St. Agnes/ Sacred Heart School (See story on page 12).

Building for the Future — Endowed Scholarship at Archbishop Wood

Archbishop Wood has a long tradition of providing tuition assistance to qualified but financially challenged students.

Since the school’s foundation in 1964 many gifts have been made by alumni, parents and friends to fund these need-based scholarship awards. These gifts have helped support the education of hundreds of Wood students over the years — a Catholic education that literally would not have been possible without scholarship assistance.

Scholarships gifts to Wood are placed in the Viking Educational Trust Fund. Each year the income generated through the investment of our endowment along with annual gifts underwrite the tuition of needy students.

Currently, the balance in the endowment is approximately $300,000. From gifts and interest on this money, we are able to make awards of about $15,000, only 5 % of our total financial aid budget. The remainder needed for financial aid must come from annual fund gifts and special events revenue. ideally,

endowment should provide for at least 50% of scholarship expenditures. Schools with healthy endowments can provide substantial financial aid.

To endow a scholarship for one student for one year costs approximately $50,000. Most existing scholarships generate smaller awards. A scholarship can be established either through a one-time donation or donations over a period of time. The scholarship can be in the name of the donor or named in memory of a loved one, teacher, classmate, friend. etc.

While unrestricted gifts to the Viking Fund are critical to sustain current operations at the school, gifts may also be restricted to the Viking Educational Trust Fund. We must grow our endowment significantly to provide a strong future for Archbishop Wood. To set up a named scholarship fund contact gary Zimmaro, President (215) 672-5050.

This past summer saw a number of improvements around the school campus including a new second State of the

Art Computer Lab, a new Art Room, and an outdoor Fountain in the courtyard dedicated to legendary Wood faculty member Rich kelly. in addition new boilers were installed replacing the original boilers from the 1960’s and all new lighting was installed to illuminate the building at night along York Road.

These are on top of the improvements last year to the school which included a new music lab, new paving along the school driveways. Your generosity and support of the school’s “Viking Fund” have helped to make all of these capital projects possible. Thank you for your support of Archbishop Wood.

Where are Archbishop Wood Alumni Living?

Pat (Whelan) Fogel ’71 Leaves a Lasting Legacy to Wood

When Pat (Whelan) Fogel ’71 passed away a year ago, she left a bequest of more than

$40,000 to Archbishop Wood High School. But for those who knew her during her days at Wood, the real legacy is the memories that “Whelan” created during her high school days.

Pat is remembered as someone who was at once shy yet funny, zany yet extremely bright. A winner of the Latin Award in her senior year, Pat also excelled at german, was a twirler for Wood’s award-winning band, and worked at the long gone Bucks County Drive-in.

“Whatever Pat did, she threw herself into it 1000%,” classmate gail (Roney) Mallett remembers. “Whether it was securing the Mission Banner by selling cupcakes for her homeroom every month, or being the first (along with kordelski) girls in the Catholic (or any other) League to twirl fire at a football game, Whelan would not back down.

She was a wonderful, shy, brilliant, generous and funny person. i will never think of her without smiling.”

Memorialize a family member, favorite scripture, or

saying. Thank friends, alumni, faculty or corporate

donors who have helped Archbishop Wood maintain its

mission of providing a Catholic education to generations

of young people. Your message on a 9.5-by-6 inch stone

paver will be permanently displayed in the Alumni

Prayer garden. The $150 covers the cost of the stone

and engraving and contributes to the garden’s ongoing

landscaping expenses. The stones will be highlighted at

the Memorial garden Blessing to be held at the Alumni

Mass on Sunday, April 29, 2012. Each donor will be sent

an invitation to the Alumni Mass and Breakfast event.

Create a Lasting Memorial in our Alumni Prayer Garden

Field of DreamsTaking Shape

A feasibility study is now underway for an Events Center/Sports Complex for Arch-

bishop Wood High School. Anyone familiar with Archbishop Wood knows that we have been in need of our own athletic fields and facilities. Since 1964, Wood has had to beg, borrow and rent fields for our teams. Despite this, we have still had some of the most successful sports teams in the area.

Over the years, many have dreamed of a facility for Archbishop Wood. We are hoping that with your support and prayers that this dream can be realized. As you can see from the drawings, a football field, lacrosse and soccer fields, an 8 lane track and tennis courts are part of the complex. These fields, along with our baseball field positions Wood as one of the elite schools in the area. The combination of our excellent academic reputation along with first class faculties will keep Wood competitive and vibrant in the future.

We hope we can look forward to your support as we undertake this exciting project. We hope you will dream with us and make this project a reality.
