LITLE THURLOW PARISH COUNCIL

Three members of the public joined Borough Councillor Jane Midwood and five Councillors

at the June meeting. There had been only one applicant for the vacancy for a Parish Councillor namely Sue Acey who was duly co-opted by members.

Councillors were extremely concerned to learn that there would be no provision for 2 to 3 year olds at Thurlow Pre-School from September and it is hoped to hold a meeting with Suffolk County Council regarding this in the near future.

A rota is to be set up for the use of a Vehicle Activated Sign which will be shared by Great and Little Thurlow, Great Wratting, Great Bradley and Cowlinge.

Matters of concern included the damaged footpath/verge in front of The Grange and speeding traffic on Broad Road. Both these matters are being discussed with SCC Highways Department.

There were no objections to a Planning Application for the re-thatching of Low Farmhouse.

The date of the next meeting is Tuesday 19th July 2016, 7.30pm at Thurlow Village Hall and members of the public are welcome to attend.

Please note that all correspondence should be addressed to Parish Clerk Molly Hawkins, Bridge Cottage, Bury Road, Great Thurlow, Haverhill, Suffolk CB9 7LF - telephone number 01440 783259, email [email protected].

St. PETER’S LITTLE THURLOW

Many of you will have noticed the building works being carried out at the

moment. The lead from part of the roof was stolen in July 2015. This has been replaced with zinc and the remainder protected with a coating of

Smart Water which is required for further insurance. Other essential works to windows and interior features are being completed with

much appreciated funds from a beneficiary trust fund left by Edmund Vestey. Judith Hardy

Great Wratting Village Fete: Thank you! On behalf of St Mary’s PCC, I write to thank everyone who helped pull off yet another

very successful fete. We were blessed with fair weather and tremendous community spirit.

An enjoyable afternoon was had by all in the wonderful garden of The Hall, with grateful

thanks to Patricia and Simon. The Haverhill Silver Band provided the perfect musical

backdrop as cream teas were enjoyed, thirst was quenched with fine ales (thanks to George

at the Red Lion) and over 350 visitors browsed the variety of stalls and took part in the

activities.

Thank you so much to everyone who came, to the fete committee, the generosity of our

sponsors and to those who contributed in so many ways. You know who you are! It is the

time of the year when everyone comes together and the fete provides a great community

event for one and all to enjoy. We can judge the fete a success on this alone. However, we

also raised a tremendous £4500.

You will have seen that the roof works on the church are progressing well, scaffolding

should be down soon for the “big reveal”. Thank you all for the support with this project.

The final note of thanks goes to John Mayhew, who was conspicuous in his absence this

year. After many years as Chair of the fete committee, John decided to take a well-earned

rest and stepped down after last year’s fete. The success of the fete is very much down to

John’s stewardship.

Enjoy the summer and please consider attending the other fetes and events in the area.

They are all for very good causes!

Alan Newlands

Chair, Fete Committee

Memorial for Private Fred Coote

July 1st 2016 is the centenary of the battle of the Somme in which Great Britain suffered 54,000 casualties on the first day, of which 20,000 were killed. One of the fatalities was Private FRED COOTE of Little Thurlow Green. He was a member of the 11th Suffolk Regiment.

At 11 am on the 1st July we will have a short commemoration in St Peters’ church by the war memorial during which a tribute to Fred will be read, followed by the Exhortation and the Last Post, which will be

sounded by Rod Gibson. This will be followed by a memorial bell ring being undertaken by bell ringers from Haverhill and Stoke by Clare. It would be most fitting if the village could partake in this memorable occasion for someone who gave his life for our country.

THURLOW WI REPORT

At the June meeting of Thurlow WI, members heard of various events being held

by the Federation which included a chance to go gliding, bike riding around Sudbury which president Dawn Abbey is interested in, a visit to the V and A, and a Science day at Culford school.

Dawn told us that the picnic and stalls held in the garden at Great Thurlow Hall to celebrate the Queen’s 90th had managed to raise £500 for the churches in spite of

the fact everything had to take place in the barn because of rain. Lynsey Parsons offered to set up a face book page for members.

Business over we all settled down to try our hand at painting on silk which produced some excellent results. Dawn thanked Barbara Collar for instructing us

in this which had been so enjoyable.

We gained a new member in Helen who has been visiting for a few months and we welcomed three visitors, two of them were lucky in the draw, Jill Rodwell and Anne Smith, as was Iris Eley, Helen, Una Higgins and Caroline Greatbatch.

Next month we meet at 7pm as it is our Garden Meeting which will be held at Mill House on July 12th. Iris Eley

The Outspoken Theatre Plays Hamlet

Friday 31st July 2016 At

Great Thurlow Hall

For the last two years, we have been pleased to host on behalf of Great

Thurlow PCC - the Outspoken Theatre at Great Thurlow Hall performing Shakespeare for all to enjoy. Over these two events, we have raised more than

£2000 to support the village Church and its upkeep – and we hope to make this year’s event as successful if not better.

Celebrating the 400th Anniversary of Shakespeare – this year we are we are delighted to welcome once again the cast and crew of Outspoken Theatre. The play for 2016 will be Hamlet, a tragedy of a young student tormented by his

father’s death and confronting each of us with the mirror of our own mortality in an imperfect world.

Please do join us on the front lawn of Great Thurlow Hall – bring your own picnic and blankets for a beautiful summer evening event with friends, neighbours and family. Tickets are £12 on the gate and the event begins at

7pm with curtains up at 7.30pm. If you have any questions at all, please do call me on 01440 783654,

Tim Gould on behalf of Great Thurlow PCC.

Great Thurlow Hall Summer Open Day Visitors on June 5th were rewarded with warm sunshine and beautiful displays in the borders of the glorious gardens.

After a walk around the grounds visitors welcomed refreshment in the form of tea and delicious home-made cakes. Purchases were made of wonderful

photographic cards by Sue Varian and plants from the garden. All had a great afternoon out and raised over £700 for Great Thurlow Church.

Thurlow Estate News Farm

Farm We are now on the final run up to the start of the harvest, our busiest time of year. Consequently the farm are ensuring that the combines and tractors are all serviced and ready to go as well as the cleaning out of all the grain stores in preparation for this year’s

harvest. They will soon be spending time trimming up the vegetation and hedges around road and field entrances on the Estate to ensure that the accesses are as safe as possible. The harvest staff are due to arrive with us full-time at the end of the month and will then

spend their first few days going through an induction process. We are just about to start taking hay off several small grass fields around the airfield. This

will be stored on the Estate until it is ready to be used later in the year and will go directly into the Hunt Yard and other local stables.

Final applications have now been made to all the cereal crops on the Estate and so we expect to be spraying the rape off in the first week of July so that we might start to harvest it two weeks later.

This year weather patterns have favoured blackgrass growth making the weed difficult to control and making it more abundant in this year’s crops that we would normally accept.

The next couple of months will be the culmination of a hard years work and so we are all hoping for some good weather and an easy Harvest – only time will tell!

Hunt

Hunt The first of the guided rides organised by the Thurlow Hunt left from Weston Woods Farm (CB21 5NR) at 11am on Sunday 19th June.

Further rides are also scheduled to take place on the following dates 1). Hunt Hack – Rectory Farm, Balsham – Sunday 10th July.

2). Hunt Hack – Horseheath Racecourse – Sunday 21st August. The route is up to 15 miles long on a figure of eight loop, so riders wishing to finish earlier

will pass the starting point after approximately 5 miles. Entries on the day only, Adults £15 and Children under 16 £10 (must be accompanied by an adult). For further information please visit the Thurlow Hunt website: www.thurlowhunt.co.uk or www.horsedates.co.uk

The Thurlow Hunt Puppy Show on Saturday 11th June went very well with the prize for the

best Dog Hound and best overall going to Fearless and the best Bitch Hound going to Fancy both of which were walked by the Kiddy Family – congratulations to them!

The Thurlow Hunt was also very well represented at Ardingly where they achieved a 1st place in the “Two couple of dog hounds” class, an excellent result.

Shoot

Shoot The gamekeeper and several volunteers have just finished building the new release pens and are now spending time checking over all of the pens to make sure that they are vermin proof, this includes checking the electric fencing that surrounds each pen. They are also

installing the drinking systems and feed hoppers prior to the first batch of poults arriving in mid-July.

The game covers, that surround a number of the shooting woods on the Estate, have been drilled with wild bird seed mix and maize and are now starting to emerge. These covers are extremely important to the wellbeing of the pheasants during the winter months –

providing both food and shelter.

Pro

pert

y Property There are several properties shortly coming available on the Estate, mainly in and around the Thurlows. These properties range in size from two-bed cottages up to five-bed farm houses. If you would like any information on these please call the Estate Office on 01440

783 661. The external redecorations program is progressing well and we are currently obtaining

quotes for several larger renovations projects which will hopefully commence later on in the year.

Oth

Other events The Horseheath Country Fair on Sunday 3rd July at Horseheath Racecourse CB21 4QP is a great day out for the family with heavy horse, sheep dog, falconry & gun dog demonstrations, a hound parade and Cyril The Squirrel And His Racing Terriers in the Main

Nature Note N

atu

re N

ote

Nature note: blue magic We had a few days in Dorset recently and were reminded

what an attractive county that is, almost as nice as Suffolk (well, not quite). Among of the glories of Dorset are the chalk downs along the coast and they support some special populations of flowers on the close-cropped

grasslands – and some even more special butterflies that depend on those. At this time of year the grass is studded with a bright array of vetches, clovers, buttercups and thrift and the sunny south-facing slopes are home to

one of Britain’s rarest and most spectacular butterflies. I spent a long while walking up and down the switchback coastal path looking for this creature, with my eyes glued

to the ground for once, ignoring all the nice birds I could hear calling around me (stonechats, whitethroats, linnets, and so on). I had one or two false alarms as small butterflies emerged from the vegetation and quickly

skittered away. Could that be it? No, calm down. When you are looking for something particular like this, it’s easy to deceive yourself. But then suddenly, WOW, yes, that’s it! Unmistakeable! I saw a tiny blue butterfly nestling close to the ground in a patch of grass. But this wasn’t just blue. It was

the brightest blue I’d ever seen, a vivid, dazzling, sky-blue plus some. It glowed blue, radiated blue, it was like a pulsing jewel of blue. This was it – the Adonis Blue butterfly.

The Adonis Blue nearly went extinct in Britain a few decades back but is now slowly recovering. It was the victim of one of those ecological chains of events with unpredicted results. The horrible

myxomatosis disease that reached Britain in 1953 killed some 99% of our wild rabbits, so they were no longer cropping the chalk downland grasses, and the food plants of these downland butterflies got swamped by the rank growth of vegetation. Eventually the rabbit population gained immunity from

the disease and recovered; they resumed grass-cutting operations and the butterflies recovered too, helped also by climate change, since in southern Britain they are at the very northern edge of their range.

The English name comes, of course, from the mythological figure of Adonis, a youth so beautiful that both Aphrodite and Persephone fell for him and they had to do a deal to share his attentions. Aphrodite got the summer months and Persephone the dark winter ones when Adonis disappears

temporarily to the Underworld. And it’s the male butterfly that has this seductive beauty. In the nineteenth century, the Adonis Blue occurred much nearer to home, on Newmarket Heath in fact. That is also chalk downland, and it was a locality then for the favoured foodplant of the Adonis

caterpillar, the horseshoe vetch. Ah, is that another connection: horseshoes, Newmarket? No, the flower is so called from its twisted seed pod that looks a bit like a horseshoe. But that’s also worth looking for. If it’s around here, maybe we might even get the blue beauty back again one day.

Soapbox Derby at Wicksteed

Park

Saturday 18th June 2016

The Soapbox Derby takes the form of a time

trial for non power assisted karts run over an inclined course with a left hand bend at the bottom. The karts are launched with a running

push start by a team member. The event raises money for Wicksteed Charitable Trust. The Sharrod family soapbox, although not

at all how the boys had originally planned, was built from recycled parts from the garage and only needed new brake cables and rear tyres.

So the whole soapbox cost under £30! Finlay, Dylan and Ray Sharrod all raced. Congratulations on a great soapbox and great results!

The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations Despite having to make a quick dash to the barn when the heavens opened (thank you to Tim and the Estate for coming to our rescue), a great afternoon was had by all

at the picnic for The Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations. Nearly £600 was raised for Great and Little Thurlow churches from the raffle, WI craft and cake stalls, plant stall, Pimms, strawberries and cream and teas. After lunch as the sun came out, all

returned to the lawns at Great Thurlow Hall to enjoy the beautiful gardens. Many thanks are due to all of those who made the event possible, to all who planned

the event (Naomi and Ray Sharrod, Chris Field, Jessica Hale, Jane and Sam Sheppard, Alison Coffey), to all who helped on the day, to those who donated the contents of the hamper, cakes and crafts, to the Parish Councils for their support, to George

Vestey for hosting and to everybody who came and made the afternoon a great success! A particular thank you goes to Naomi and Ray Sharrod and family.

The Allin family - winner of the first prize in the

adult’s raffle, a glorious hamper! First prize for the boys went to André

Lombard. The girl’s prize was unclaimed at the event.

£50 from the 100-squares grid went to Jane Sheppard.

The ice-cream van visit was a big hit with all ages!

All have agreed that the event was very enjoyed, a great chance to come together as a community. So much so that we will be

holding the event again next year at Great Thurlow Hall. Look forward to welcoming you there!

Friendship I believe that one of the most important things to have in life are friends, or a friend. Any

cnumber of friends whether that is one or ten, can have a big impact on your life in a vast amount of aspects.

The definition of a friend is 'a person with whom one has a bond of mutual affection'; this really downplays the true definition of a friend through my perspective. I cherish my friends as family and they mean a considerable amount more to me than this plain and simple definition. I can

be fairly introverted at times and enjoy being by myself day to day, however being with my friends really is one of the nicest things in the world and sometimes I wish that we could never be apart.

Friends can be better counsellors than the professionals. If you go through a tough situation or a rough period of time, this really brings out the true friends who will stick by you through thick or thin. The support from friends is really rather touching; friends can give the best support

through those times, whether it is the tiniest of issues such as being upset about a hairstyle that went wrong, to the bigger issues such as a death in the family. Even if they don't think they're making much of an impact, just their presence and company can sometimes help you

see the light at the end of the tunnel. The humour and laughs shared amongst friends is one of my personal favourite aspects about

this topic. The general banter and jokes that can fly around from one another can have you doubling over in laughter and always leave you feeling uplifted and well spirited; laughter is the best medicine after all!

Memories created with friends can last a lifetime, especially going on daring adventures and trying new and exciting experiences. Travelling and exploring are made a hundred times better

when you're with friends, despite how far or little you travel, I can guarantee it's the very best thing being surrounded by people who bring out the best in you. The smiles and the energy just bounce off each other and if you’re lucky enough to have really good friends, you'll become

a better person just by being with them. The thing about friendship is it really doesn't matter at all who you've known the longest;

sometimes a person can walk into your life and it is almost as if you've known them your entire life. In addition, saying this, the old and true friendships warm my heart also, and it's a very lovely thing to grow up with close friends and still have those friendships remain as strong as ever even after many years having passed.

Friendships really are wonderful, I must say. It's not what we have in life, but who we have in our lives that matters the most.

s Our Rector Writes

OUR RECTOR WRITES Many years ago now when I was in my second curacy on the edge of Nottingham, we had an Organist and Director of Music called Derek. To save any confusion he was Derek

number one, and I was Derek number two, or “Derek the Cleric”. He was a couple of decades my senior! On occasions he would arrive at church prior to a service and would check with me before the service “What is it today, C and A?” C and A was nothing to do

with a clothing store, but a ‘shorthand’ reference to two hymns which regularly featured at funeral services, C being ‘Crimond’, and A being ‘Abide with me’. Crimond, of course, is not actually the name of a hymn but the tune regularly used for “The Lord’s my Shepherd”.

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot”. So says the author of the Book of the Bible called Ecclesiastes. Its alternative title is “The Preacher”. It’s from the

part of the Bible which contains what’s called the “Wisdom” literature from the Old Testament, and probably dates from the third century before Christ. So this is ancient wisdom. The author discusses the meaning of life and the best way to live. He argues that

everything in life is inherently futile, since the lives of both the wise and the foolish end in death. In the light of that truth he says human beings should enjoy the simple pleasures of daily life, eating, drinking and taking enjoyment in their work. An American

novelist Thomas Wolfe wrote: "Of all I have ever seen or learned, that book seems to me the noblest, the wisest, and the most powerful expression of man's life upon this earth—and also the highest flower of poetry, eloquence, and truth. I could say that Ecclesiastes is

the greatest single piece of writing I have ever known, and the wisdom expressed in it the most lasting and profound."

Ecclesiastes tells us that there is a time for everything, a season for every activity. Things happen when the time is right for them. We see this every year do we not, as the regular march of the seasons brings the new green of the spring, the ripening corn of the summer,

the falling leaves of the winter. Here in the countryside we no longer see anywhere near the number of animals which would once have filled the fields, but country folk know well that there is a cycle of life, and that death is part of that ongoing life cycle. There is a time to be born and a time to die. There is a time to plant and a time to uproot. That chapter

goes on to say that there is a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance. A funeral service will feel very much like that time to weep, and the time to mourn.

A piece often requested to be read in a funeral service contains some words from Canon Henry Scott Holland – Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford in the early part of the last century - in a poem which has brought comfort to many as it encourages us to think of

death as only slipping away into the next room. Preaching at St Paul’s Cathedral after the death of Edward VII, Scott Holland discussed our responses to death, both the fear of the unexplained and the belief in continuity. It may strike us as odd that a poem should begin

with that statement that “Death is nothing at all”. For often it feels nothing like that. Death is nothing at all? When you’re the nearest and dearest, the recently-bereaved? But if we can get over the shock of that first line and allow ourselves to listen to the rest of the

poem, the author is keen to have us take comfort from the hope of the continuity which he writes about.

s There’s another well-known poem by the priest and poet John Donne, Dean of St Paul’s at

the beginning of the seventeenth Century, who on his sick-bed heard a passing bell or funeral bell and wrote “never send to know for whom the bell tolls: it tolls for thee”. “No man is an island, entire of itself, every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.

If a clod be washed away by the sea Europe is the less as well as if a promontory were. Any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind.” Believers, or not, I think we can all maybe see a truth in those words from Ecclesiastes and understand that

truth that the life-cycle comes full circle and the time to be born is followed inevitably – sooner or later - by the time to die. Psalm ninety tells us that the days of man are three score years and ten of if we have strength four score.

‘Abide with me’ refers in the second verse to “earth’s joys” growing dim, and its glories passing away. Change and decay, it

says, are all around. It has, as its last verse “Hold thou thy Cross before my closing eyes, shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies: heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee, in life in death, O Lord, abide with me.” A version

I came across recently replaced the image of the Cross in that last verse (and I’m not sure why) with the words “Reveal thyself before my closing eyes”. I, for one, am happy with the Cross as

the focus for my closing eyes. It was after all there on the Cross that God’s love for humanity was dramatically demonstrated, and the shameful and horrific instrument of cruelty and death

became for Christians the most powerful symbol of life. That verse urges us to look beyond the “vain shadows” of the earthly and the temporal, which the author of Ecclesiastes would recognise, to the eternal realities of the heavenly world

beyond. Derek Hollis

Prayer needs and home Communions

If you are in need of prayer, or are aware of someone who needs to be included in prayer, please contact the Rector.

There is no need to go into detail and no-one will be mentioned by name in intercessions unless they give their permission but you can be assured that you or the person you bring forward will

be prayed for. The same applies if you, or someone you know, hasn’t been able to come to Communion because of illness and would like to receive. In these cases you can still be included by the Rector or a member of the ministry team bringing Communion to you in your home.

For all pastoral matters please contact Rev. Derek Hollis on 01440 763066.
