RACHELLE...A Monthless Period...
What the heck does “AMonthless Period” mean? Backduring the time that Rome wasconsidered the center of theuniverse, the Romansconsidered the winter time asthe Monthless Period. When theRoman calendar was developed,January and February were thelast months of the year. In 450BC, the calendar was changedwhere December became thelast month of the year. Februarywas named for the Latin termfebruum-meaning purification -because there was a purificationceremony in February.
A lot has happened since themonth of February was named.St. Valentine’s Day wasn’t evenestablished until 500 AD whenPope Gelasius I named Feb. 14Valentine’s Day after an earlyChristian martyr namedValentine. Interestingly enough,in 1969 Pope Paul VI deletedValentine’s Day from the RomanCalendar of Saints. This has notdissuaded us from celebratingthis day of “love” withchocolates and flowers.
February is also a time wherewe celebrate many of ourformer presidents’ birthdays.George Washington andAbraham Lincoln were bothborn in February, and wecelebrate Presidents Day thethird Monday of the month.Other countries havecelebrations such asIndependence Day (DominicanRepublic) and National Day ofthe Sun (Argentina).
February went from being “AMonthless Period,” to a monthfull of love.

WARNING SIGNS OFMILD COGNITIVEIMPAIRMENT
The National Institute onAging-Alzheimer’s Associationwork group has come up withnew diagnostic guidelines formild cognitive impairment dueto Alzheimer’s disease.
What to look forA person is thought to suffer
from mild cognitive impairmentif he or she meets the followingcriteria:
A friend, family member, doctor, or the person in questionis concerned about a change inhis or her cognition compared tothe previous level. The person isexperiencing more difficulties inone or more cognitive areassuch as memory, attention, andlanguage than would beexpected for his or her age oreducational background.Difficulty learning and retainingnew information is mostcommon in mild cognitiveimpairment patients whodevelop Alzheimer’s-relateddementia.
The person is having troubleperforming complex tasks suchas paying bills, preparing a meal,or shopping. He or she may takemore time, be less efficient, andmake more mistakes than in the
past. Still, he or she maintainshis or her independence withminimal assistance.
There’s no evidence ofsignificant impairment in socialor occupational functioning. There should be objectiveevidence of progressivecognitive decline over time.Cognitive testing can assess thedegree of impairment. Scoresfor people with mild cognitiveimpairment are usually 1 to 1.5standard deviations below themean for their age andeducation level.
What may helpResearchers have discovered
that activities such as exerciseand computer use may preventmild cognitive impairment.
Large-scale studies aretesting whether therapies canhalt or slow the conversion frommild cognitive impairment toAlzheimer’s disease. Byintervening at the first signs ofmemory trouble, doctors hopeto delay Alzheimer’s disease, orprevent it altogether.
Research on medications forstaving off dementia has beendiscouraging, though. Forexample, in a recent study ofpeople with mild cognitiveimpairment, researchers foundno significant benefit from earlyintervention with theAlzheimer’s drug donepezil(Aricept) or vitamin E.

W/CAROLYN MOSS“A New Year” by William Arthur
Ward, 1921--1994Another fresh new year is here...
Another year to live!To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
To love and laugh and give! This bright new year is given me
To live each day with zest...To daily grow and try to be
My highest and my best!I have the opportunity
Once more to right some wrongsTo pray for peace, to plant a tree,
And sing some joyful songs.
