    Cleaning Tips

If you hate cleaning, you are not alone. It is much more fun to be out and about, playing with friends or just enjoying

some relaxation time. While cleaning is a "necessary evil" for many people, there are things you can do to make your

cleaning time shorter and more productive.

Range Hood Fan: During routine cleaning, there is one part of the range hood that is often forgottenthe fan inside the

hood. While it may not be necessary to clean very often, if the fan is not cleaned periodically then you are not getting the

    fan's full effect.

Stove grease: It is easier to remove the grease while in the liquid stage rather than waiting until it congeals. There are

various degreasing products on the market, look around to get the best deals.

Microwave: It is best to clean the microwave using natural methods instead of cleaners that can leave a smell and taint the

taste of your food. Using steam, you can loosen tough spots in your microwave and then wipe the interior clean with a

damp cloth. Microwaves absorb the smells of the foods cooked in them. To stop these odors and leave a temporary sweetsmell, cook a lemon in water for three minutes in your microwave. This mixture will cleanse your microwave of any

offensive odors and leave it with a temporary lemon scent.

Please remember to pick up after your dogs. Due to the heat the smell can get pretty strong. You might be offending your

    neighbors.

Tips to Save Energy and Keep Cool This Summer

    1. Raise your thermostat to 78. This is the number one way to conserve energy.2. When you are away from home for more than eight hours, raise the thermostat setting and you can possibly see

a 1% savings for each degree of setback. This will reduce the amount of energy used to cool your home whileyou're away. You can learn more about your thermostat online by visiting the U.S. Department of Energy website.

    3. Keep shades closed when the air conditioner is on. Sunny windows account for 40 percent of unwanted heat andcan make your air conditioner work two to three times harder.

    4. Check and clean filters. Cleaning and replacing air conditioning filters monthly allows the system to run moreefficiently.

    5. Run appliances with large energy use late in the evening. Use the dishwasher and clothes washer late in theevening. When used during the day, these appliances produce additional heat, causing your air conditioner to work

    harder.

    6. Use cold water to wash dishes and clothes. This will save on water heating costs.7. Unplug equipment not in use. Electric chargers, televisions and audio/video equipment use electricity and

produce heat even when they are not in use. Running an older refrigerator can use up to three times the energy of amodern one. Unplug any appliance when it's not in use.

    8. Turn off lights. Turn lights off when exiting a room. Consider replacing incandescent bulbs with energy efficiencompact florescent lights (CFLs). And remember to recycle CFLs whenever possible.
