THE VILLAGER MISSION STATEMENT

To fully inform the residents of the Village at Calabash of all activities and issues related to the good and welfare of the community to maintain fairness and impartiality in all reporting. To this end, no personal or political editorializing will be published, as well as

anything derogatory or inflammatory. The Villager Printed copies funding provided by the Village at Calabash P.O.A.

The end of summer is very near. Looking

forward to cooler weather and here’s hoping

that it will be a mild winter. Holiday and

special days this month are Labor Day on the

2nd, Grandparents Day on the 8th, Patriot Day on the 11th, (Remember 9/11). Citizens Day

on the 17th, The Air Force Birthday on the

18th, POA/MIA Recognition Day on the 20th,

and Rosh Hashanah starts on the 29th.

National Grandparents Day is a secular

holiday celebrated in various countries, with official recognition in some, and occurring on

various days of the year, either as one

holiday or sometimes as a separate

Grandmothers' Day and Grandfathers' Day.

In the United States, National Grandparents

Day has more than one origin. Some people

consider it to have been first proposed by Michael Goldgar in the 1970s after he visited

his aunt in an Atlanta nursing home,

Spending $11,000 of his own money in

lobbying efforts to have the day officially

recognized, he made 17 trips to Washington

DC over a seven-year span to meet with legislators. Others consider Marian McQuade

who has been recognized nationally by the

United States Senate in particular by

Senators Jennings Randolph, Robert Byrd

and by President Jimmy Carter, as the

founder of National Grandparents Day. McQuade made it her goal to educate the

youth in the community about the important

contribution’s seniors have made throughout

history. She also urged the youth to "adopt"

a grandparent, not just for one day, a year,

but rather for a lifetime. Co-founder Cynthia Bennett, who worked for Marian's husband,

contributed by writing letters of verification.

In 1973, Senator Jennings Randolph

introduced a resolution to the senate to

make Grandparents' Day a national holiday.

West Virginia's Governor Arch Moore had proclaimed an annual Grandparents' Day for

the state, at the urging of Marian McQuade.

When Senator Randolph's resolution in the

U.S. Senate died in committee, Marian

McQuade organized supporters and began

contacting governors, senators, and

congressmen in all fifty states. She urged each state to proclaim their own

Grandparents' Day. Within three years, she

had received Grandparents' Day

proclamations from forty-three states. She

sent copies of the proclamations to Senator

Randolph. In February 1977, Senator Randolph, with

the concurrence of many other senators,

introduced a joint resolution to the senate

requesting the president to "issue annually a

proclamation designating the first Sunday of

September after Labor Day of each year as

'National Grandparents' Day'. Congress passed the legislation proclaiming the first

Sunday after Labor Day as National

Grandparents' Day and, on August 3, 1978,

then-President Jimmy Carter signed the

proclamation. The statute cites the day's

purpose: "to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for

their children's children, and to help children

become aware of strength, information, and

guidance older people can offer".

What is the official song and what is the

On August 5, 2019, The Village at Calabash POA Inc. held its quarterly meeting. During

this meeting, President Alenckis asked the

Nominating Committee who would be

running in the three (3) open positions on

the POA Board of Directors. The Nominating

Committee responded that all three

incumbents, Joyce Baughman, Phillip Mara and John Epting, had submitted their names

to fill these three positions, and that no one

else had submitted their names. President

Alenckis then asked the attending membership if there were any nominations

from the floor, and since no one responded,

he then closed the nominations. Normally,

we would then start the voting procedure by

mailing out the ballots on or before

September 1st, however, this year, since the

three candidates are running unopposed, the

Board felt it was an unnecessary expense for

the POA to do a "paper" ballot. The Board

consulted with our POA Attorney to make

sure that we were proceeding within the

boundaries of North Carolina State law and

Robert's Rules of Order to forego a regular

election. The Attorney's opinion is that since

our By-Laws are silent as to how a vote is to be taken, we are within required guidelines

to hold a vote either by "hand" or "voice" in

an affirmative or negative in regard to each

candidate. Therefore, at our October 7, 2019 annual meeting, we will be voting by a show

of hands for the three Directors positions.

The following voting procedure will then take

place: The President will dismiss the Nominating

Committee

The President will then ask for a motion from

the Board to vote immediately, followed by a "second" and all in favor, “yes” or “no”

The President will then state that Candidate

# 1 has submitted their name to serve on the

POA Board of Directors, and the membership

will then vote in the affirmative or negative

in regard to this candidate. The same

procedure will then follow for the other

remaining candidates. We think it's important for you to know that,

in the future, we will be conducting our

elections in this manner whenever there is

no opposition to incumbents running in an

election. If you have any issues, questions, comments, please speak with a POA Board

member, or come to see us in the office

Mondays and Wednesdays from 8AM-Noon,

“Reminder”

New residents must register at the

office within 30 days of residing in the

Village and to obtain Pool Access Cards. Also, if you have sold your home, please

remember to turn them in.

NEWS FROM TOWN HALL

Really glad to be back “in harness”, as I watch my fingers slowly seek out the correct

keys to compose this column. There is

nothing wrong with my fingers – they have

always been hesitant. By the time that this

issue of the Villager reaches you, all of

Waterview Lane will have been “ditched”, and a goodly portion of Palmer Drive should

be done as well. The ditching was originally

planned to extend on Waterview Lane from

Nautical Lane to Putting Lane. A combination

of dry weather and no unforeseen problems

has provided our workforce with a

substantial block of time to squeeze this extra work in. The intersection of Par Court

and Palmer has been flooding periodically for

quite some time now, so efforts to relieve

that problem were accelerated into the newly available time slot. Roadbed repairs and

repaving are expected to start in early

September and take about two weeks. It is

IMPERATIVE that you drive carefully through

the construction areas and obey the

instructions of the traffic control folks for both your safety and the safety of the town

employees and contractors.

The town is sponsoring a concert on Monday,

September 16th at 6:30 on the Town Hall

Green. The last concert was attended by

over 200 of the town’s residents and everyone was able to find convenient

parking within the confines of the town hall

property, including the maintenance yard. It

was a fun time for all who attended.

Complete details somewhere further on in

this issue.

And now that September is upon us, (here it comes…), if you are not registered to vote –

DO IT! You can argue that it is a local

election and that it doesn’t mean much

against the backdrop of world events; and

that is true. But we have, perhaps, 3500

voters in this town, of which only 800-900 will make the effort to vote. So, your single

vote in an election of this size is significant

when compared to a single vote in a national

election where over 130,000,000 voted. But

that vote can be a major factor in

determining the quality of life in your

hometown, where you realize your day-to-day moments, each day, every day!

For expanded coverage of town activities,

check out the town’s monthly news bulletin

entitled “Town of Carolina Shores Bulletin.”

TOWN CONCERT

THE SEA & SAND BAND

The Sea and Sand Band is the largest and

most fun variety band in Brunswick County.

The Sea and Sand Band is based out of

Sunset Beach, NC. They are a band of eleven

members. The Sea and Sand Band was formed in 2014 and began playing shows

around southeastern North Carolina in

support of various local and national

charities, while entertaining crowds large

and small. The Sea and Sand Band has it all

from guitars, bass, drums, keyboards,

congas, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, flute, and six different singers. When you

come to the shows, you will hear a variety of

songs: Classic Standards, Rock, Beach, R&B,

Pop, Disco and more! There’s a little

something for everyone and we love when

you sing along and dance with us. They always have one goal in mind – rocking for a

good time!

VOTER REGISTRATION

If you are new to the area, or have moved

since the last time you voted, or will be

eligible to vote for the first time, you need to register to vote before voting. You may find

all the info (including downloadable forms) at

https://www.brunswickcountync.gov/e

lections/registration/

For those of you who are computer-less, you

may pick up the forms at the POA office on or after Wednesday, August 28th.

I hope to cover early voting and one-stop

registration/early voting, (which begins on

October 16th,) in the October issue.

August Happening’s! We, at the Social Committee were very busy in August. The

Newcomers Potluck was a big success with

79 people attending! Each “Newcomer”

introduced themselves and before we knew

it, the “Seasoned” residents and the

“Newcomers” had made new friends. If you

are a “Newcomer” And did not get a chance

to attend, please call me and I will get you your “Newcomers” bag complete with a

Village Cookbook.

Our Trivia evening was also a great success.

We had 49 people battling it out for the first

place which contained a prize. In the end,

The Village People won. However, we all went home with more trivial knowledge then

we came with. Keep an eye out for our next

Trivia event. A Big Thank You goes out to

Lynn Sawyer and Joy Smith for hosting the

August luncheon at Hickory Tavern. Some

lucky Villagers won homemade wreaths made by Joy. Everyone had a lovely

afternoon. The August Bingo hosted by Don

& Lori Thompson and their ambitious son

Trey was a great success. We hope they will

consider hosting again!

September will be an active month but not

nearly as busy. Please feel free to call me, if you have any idea for an activity and I’ll take

it to the committee for discussion. Thank you

HANSEN’S TIPS FOR PET LOVERS

Hi, it’s me, Hansen🐾

Kelly was on vacation, so I had to type this

for her, I was staying with my best bud

Micky who has two very active boys next

door that kept me really busy. I was exhausted by day’s end. Are you thinking of

adding a “new addition” (puppy) to your

household? Here are a few helpful hints:

1. Compare your puppy to your 2-year old

grandchild! They’re teething, curious, and

can make a mess!

2. Cover unused outlets & unplug cords & get them off the floor.

3. In the kitchen: Trash can off the floor.

Pots & pans handles turned inward on your

stove. Exposed food & plates off the

counter/table to discourage “counter-surfing”

by that curious canine. Close bottom cupboards.

4. Spray your furniture legs & edges of rugs

with organic sour apple spray to discourage

chewing. Close closets shoes are fun to

destroy!

5. Crate your new pal at night or when you leave the house. Line the crate with a few

FREE DUMP WEEK M to F @ BRUNSWICK COUNT LANDFILL 9/16 to 9/20/2019

"There ain't no surer

way to find out

whether you like

people or hate them

than to travel with

them" MARK TWAIN

It's impossible to get water through airport security, right? While it's true that you are

allowed only up to 3.4 ounces of any fluid, Transportation Security Administration

regulations do let full water bottles through in one case-if they are "frozen solid when

presented for screening." The catch is serious, however: "If frozen liquid items are partially

melted, slushy, or have any liquid at the bottom of the container; you'll likely have to toss

the whole thing.
